KEY MATERIALS When you begin your build or renovation project, consider choosing building materials that have a lighter impact on the planet. • Timber – a natural, renewable plantation that doesn’t require a lot of energy to produce. It is also a natural insulator, which helps to reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling. • Rammed earth – a mixture of raw materials including earth, chalk, lime and gravel. It can be used as an insulator as it has high thermal properties, is non-toxic, non-combustible and adds a feeling of weight to the structure of the home. Keep in mind that it can be costly. • Hempcrete – a combination of water, hemp, hurds or shives and lime. Using this product as an insulator can lower your impact on the environment. It is thermally efficient in both hot and cold climates.
Tailoring the design of your home to the climate and best living aspect of your location can help maintain the temperature both inside and out. Known as ‘passive home design’, this method can reduce or eliminate the need for additional heating or cooling methods, therefore making your home more sustainable. When building or renovating, consider where the sun rises and sets to help position your windows, skylights, openings or solar panels. This will allow natural light and heat in so you can spend less on other forms of energy. Shading your home by planting a tree, adding curtains, shutters or installing an outside awning may also help block out the heat. Also look at where the natural breezes enter and exit the block and find ways to capture them with the placement of windows or doors,. Or, block where necessary with the sealing of gaps in the wall.

BACKYARD BENEFITS You can also improve the sustainability of your home by considering how your landscaping is going to influence the heat, shade and cool air around the building. A well-positioned tree or shrub may help shade your house from the summer sun, or greatly reduce the ground temperature around your home. To help insulate your home, you could consider growing vines on the outside walls or near windows to absorb the summer heat. The positioning of a pool or waterway can also be used to generate cool air from evaporation, which can then be drawn into the house.

DESIGN // SMART WATER USAGE You can save water around your home by implementing watersaving design principles and installing water-saving fittings and appliances. Inside the home • When it comes to your toilet, consider installing a low-volume water flushing function to cut back on the amount of water used. • Bath usage can use a lot of water, so consider installing a shower with modern aerating tapware that can reduce the volume of water as it mixes with air, giving it a softer feel. • If you choose to upgrade your appliances, such as your washing machine or dishwasher, look for those with a rating specified by the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme. The more stars on the WELS label, the more water efficient the appliance. Outside the home • When setting up your garden look at the natural flow of the land and position garden beds where water will naturally run. • Consider regularly laying mulch to keep the soil moist, or trying water crystals that can help absorb larger quantities of water. • On small blocks, consider artificial turf lawns. These allow water to still get to the soil underneath while removing the need for watering (or mowing) the lawn.
TIP Before you begin implementing these techniques in your home, it’s important to consider what costs are involved and whether they fit within the budget for your build or renovation. You may also want to seek further advice or assistance from a design or building expert to see if these options are suitable for your situation.

It has been shortlisted in the coveted Houses Awards Sustainability category. The winners will be announced in late July. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The site’s topography, orientation, exposure to the elements and neighbours, define the building’s form. The building responds through systems of blocking and filtering: walls of sliding glass, screens, and large scale automated clerestories. CASSANDRA SAYS It sounds as though you have quite the challenge there. While half a metre is not wide enough to plant trees or large shrubs, it is enough space to plant trailing vines that could climb up a vine frame and provide privacy. The safest way to approach this situation would be to alternate physical privacy screen panels and vine frame structures. This will provide partial screening to portions of the pool while the vines grow, it will also provide a safety net in case some of the vines find it difficult to establish and grow well. A half a metre width is wide enough for the footings of your privacy screens. It is also wide enough to plant your climbing vines. A safe way to work with your

vine species is to choose three to five varieties that you plant at the base of each vine structure. This will enable you to try different species to see which ones do the best in the pool surrounds. Some species you may like to consider include jasmine, cissus, pandorea or the snake vine also known as hibbertia. Ensure that the planting area is cultivated well with a good quality topsoil and finished with a thick layer of organic mulch. Water well and make
sure the area drains well. Bamboo species can reach a greater height than a vine frame structure, but can also be messy dropping leaves into your pool. If you do decide to trial a bamboo species, ensure that it is a clumping variety and will not damage your pool shell with its roots in the long term. HOW ALEXA GOT HER PERSONALITY Have you ever asked Alexa about her feelings? Or told her that she is hilarious? No need to be embarrassed, you’re not alone. Browse the reviews of the Echo smart speaker on Amazon. com, and you’ll find countless examples of people calling Alexa playful and funny, and a great companion, or even a friend. That’s no accident. Alexa’s developers have been working from the start on giving her a distinct personality, recalled the Amazon’s senior vice president for devices and services, Dave Limp, during the company’s Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas in June. This was in part a response to other smart assistants already in the market. “Sometimes not being first with something is a happy accident,” Mr Limp said. Apple had been shipping phones with its Siri assistant for some time, and Google had also begun to offer voice functionality for Android phones. At least initially, these phone assistants were very utilitarian, recalled Mr Limp. “They were for command and control, maybe navigation. And when you’re doing a command and control, personality actually gets

in the way,” he said. “You don’t want your steering wheel in your car to have a personality.” Amazon didn’t have the same kind of legacy, which allowed the company to start from scratch. “From day one, we were able to think about Alexa as an embodiment of a person,” Mr Limp said. This started with the wake word, which is the phrase that wakes up the assistant to listen to voice commands. “It would’ve been much easier, trust me, to have it be ‘Hey Amazon’ or ‘Okay Amazon’,” said Mr Limp. “But we felt like having a name, in this case Alexa, was [conveying] so much more personality.” Alexa developers didn’t just stop with the name. They also decided to go beyond the utilitarian helpfulness of an algorithm by giving the smart assistant something that humans have a lot of – her own opinions. “If you’ve ever gone to a dinner party devoid of opinions, you wanted to run not walk away from that dinner party,” Mr Limp said. “It’s just a boring dinner party.” The result: Alexa has opinions about all kinds of things, from food to pets to even some slightly political topics. She is a self-proclaimed feminist, and will tell you that she thinks everyone “deserves to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect”. How much personality does Alexa need to be relatable, but not annoying?
“Twenty-two percent,” joked Amazon vice president of Alexa experience and Echo devices Toni Reid during an interview with Variety, before adding, “No, there is no actual formula for that.” “We knew we wanted the assistant to have characteristics that were important to us at Amazon as builders,” Ms Reid recalled. “Smart, humble, helpful, sometimes funny.” But while her team was envisioning Alexa as relatable from day one, it didn’t anticipate how much people would relate to her. “When we launched, to be honest, we were a bit surprised at how much people reacted to the personality,” Ms Reid said. The result was an even bigger focus on injecting personality throughout the entire Alexa experience. “We run a bunch of kind of experiments and kind of test the boundaries a bit.” One of the lessons from these experiments: just like humans, assistants can become overbearing. And to get the balance right, context matters. “There are certain times when you’re in a hurry,” Ms Reid said. “You need information very quickly. Probably not the best time to insert a little bit of personality.” Her team has even talked about tweaking Alexa’s personality to adapt to each and every user, but that approach could be challenging as well. “That person could exhibit different types

“we were able to think of alexa as an embodiment of a person” of behaviour in different situations,” said Amazon vice president of Echo and Alexa devices Miriam Daniel. Being contextually relevant was the better approach, she argued. “When somebody comes home and says, ‘Alexa, I’ve had a long hard day,’ versus when somebody says ‘Alexa, what have you done today?’ The response you give could be different.” There is some good news for anyone who isn’t a people person at all, and who doesn’t need their smart speaker to have that many
opinions. A little over a year ago, Amazon introduced a feature called brief mode that can be enabled in the Alexa app. With it, Alexa speaks a lot less and even responds with chime sounds instead of verbal confirmations for some commands. It provides a more utilitarian experience with less personality. But while that may work for some, most consumers actually do want Alexa to have some personality. “It’s a balancing act,” Ms Reid said. -AAP/Reuters

Q. Is it wise to build a pool during a renovation or while building a new home? A. There are many design and construction benefits to building your new pool and outdoor space with your home. Designing and creating the indoor and outdoor spaces together creates a flow of materials between the two areas. The pool’s filtration, pipes, power, fencing and tiling can all be considered in the home’s grand design for a flawless finish and efficient construction process. Another benefit is the reduced costs on pool excavation, and ensuring you have access to the pool area, which may be reduced once your new home is complete. It also means there’ll be no construction works disrupting your finished house and landscaping. Q. Are there any benefits to leaving the design and construction of the pool until after the home is completed? A. Starting the pool build after the house build just prolongs the total construction time frame unnecessarily, so I always suggest that my clients build the pool and house together if possible. Waiting until the house is completed to start the pool usually has no benefit as generally the access width for the machines to excavate the pool will be reduced, which slows down the excavation process and increases costs.
