EASTER AT HOME

Easter – four whole days to pause, relax and - if you’re anything like us – tackle a few of those jobs around the house. Whether you want to roll up your sleeves indoors or get the outdoor deck ready for entertaining, we’ve got a list of projects to help get you started.

INDOORS: Refresh your guest room

Got family visiting? Now is the time to dust off the spare room and give it a mini makeover. Fresh linen is a must (we love deep greens and rust tones for autumn), but it’s the little things that make a difference. Think bedside table styling with a lamp, a good book and maybe even a small vase of flowers or a candle. Declutter surfaces, clean fans and aircon filters and consider a quick coat of paint if the walls are looking tired. Don’t forget to add extra blankets or a throw at the end of the bed – it’s always appreciated on cooler nights.

GARDENING: Tidy, trim and plant

Easter weekend is ideal for giving your outdoor spaces some attention. It’s cooler, but still warm enough to plant and grow. If your lawn’s looking a little weary after summer, feed it with a slow-release fertiliser to strengthen roots and prep it for the cooler months ahead. Don’t forget the gutters – clearing them now will prevent potential water damage during autumn rains. And if you’ve been dreaming about a more efficient garden, installing an irrigation system could be your new favourite DIY project. For gardening ideas, turn to page 24.

DECK MAINTENANCE: Your autumn essential

Decks are a mainstay of the Aussie home and especially on the Sunshine Coast, where indoor-outdoor living is practically mandatory. But decks need love too. Start by checking for loose nails or screws –re-nail or tighten where needed. Then, give the entire surface a proper clean. Use a specialised wood cleaner to remove grime, mildew or old stains. Next, it’s time to re-stain. Autumn’s slightly lower temperatures make this the ideal time of year to do it. Choose a quality stain that suits your timber and apply it in the late afternoon with a natural bristle brush. Work with the grain in smooth strokes and don’t rush or you won’t achieve the best effect. Let the deck dry completely for at least 24 hours before walking on it.

Driveway looking tired?

We all know the satisfaction of a good driveway pressure-clean. But sometimes, it reveals that your concrete needs a little more TLC than expected. If you find cracks, fading colour or a tired surface, it might be time to take things up a notch. C.I.A Concrete is one of Australia’s leading suppliers of decorative concrete products. As well as stamp, stencil and topcrete (spray-on concrete coating over existing concrete), they supply coloured oxide pigments for ‘in the mix’ coloured concrete. It is an economical, labour-saving method for colouring concrete. Utilising different colours formed into chosen designs, it can produce individual and modern results. Concrete coloured this way is great for an architectural design look or enhancing exposed aggregate. Visit ciaconcrete.com.au.

STORAGE: A new look for your entryway closet

Whether it’s a broom cupboard, linen closet or hallway storage, giving your cupboards a makeover will help you start the new season with a clearer head. Empty everything out, give the shelves a good wipe down and reassess what really needs to stay. Modular storage racks, wire baskets and labelled containers can make all the difference. A fresh coat of paint inside the closet (try a soft sage or deep blue) can add a touch of contemporary charm too.

STYLE & PRIVACY

PROJECT IDEA: Feature walls with flair

The Caselio Labyrinth range from Ivory T, Caboolture. Visit wallpaperaustralia. com.au.

Wallpaper is officially cool again. From subtle textures to bold florals and geometric prints, there’s something to suit every taste. If you’ve got a blank wall in the bedroom, study or even the laundry, consider giving it a new look with a beautiful wallpaper design. You’ll need a second pair of hands for the job, but don’t be daunted. Just take your time and remember to use a roller for the large sections and a brush for the edges.

TIP: Start from the centre of the wall and work outwards to ensure a balanced look.

OUTDOORS: Build a firewood storage nook

Here in southeast Queensland, we enjoy a backyard firepit as the evenings become cooler. Easter weekend is the ideal time to build a simple firewood storage nook. Choose a dry, sheltered spot near your house or shed and construct a small lean-to structure using timber or recycled pallets. Keep the base off the ground to prevent moisture damage and make sure there’s airflow to keep the wood dry. Stack logs neatly and keep kindling within easy reach in a basket or crate. Not only is it a practical project, but a tidy, well-styled wood pile can add rustic charm to your outdoor space.

TAP INTO STYLE

When it comes to bathroom renovations, it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest difference. Tapware and fittings may seem like finishing touches, but they have a big impact on both the style and function of your space.

Start by considering the overall style of your bathroom. Is it modern and minimal, coastal, or more classic and traditional? Tapware should complement your broader design aesthetic. For a sleek, contemporary look, think matte black or brushed nickel finishes with clean lines. For something timeless, polished chrome remains a favourite. Brass or gold tones add warmth and work beautifully in vintage-inspired or coastal spaces.

While mixed metals is having a moment in interiors, the bathroom is one place where consistency tends to work best. Match your tapware finish across your basin, shower and bath fittings for a cohesive, polished result. You may also want to coordinate towel rails, toilet roll holders, robe hooks and even your mirror frame for a seamless finish.

Pictured is the Spin in wall progressive mixer and 200mm spout set matte black

While style matters, function is just as important. Tapware is something you’ll use daily, so ergonomics and ease of use should be the main considerations. Look for designs that feel comfortable in your hand. Wall-mounted mixers can free up bench space and create a sleek look, while traditional taps may suit a heritage-style bathroom. Consider water-saving features too — a 4-star WELS rating or higher will help reduce your water bill. Sleek and savvy – who doesn’t want that?

tip!

Buy the best quality your budget allows. Tapware is a hands-on feature — literally — so it needs to last. Investing in quality pieces now can save time, money and hassle down the track.

Mixers are popular for their simplicity – a single lever controls both temperature and flow. They suit modern bathrooms and are easy to operate for people of all ages. Meanwhile, separate hot and cold taps can be a nod to classic design and work well with freestanding basins or pedestal sinks.

FRESH FLORALS AND ORGANIC TEXTURES

Start with a neutral base – think timber or linen – then build with natural elements like woven water hyacinth or rattan placemats, ceramic dinnerware and casual linen napkins. Bring in colour with loose arrangements of fresh, seasonal flowers: geraldton wax, flannel flowers and paper daisies all work beautifully in autumn. Add some carnations or brightly coloured flowers to make the arrangement really pop.

Whether you’re hosting a long lunch for extended family or planning a simple Sunday gathering with close friends, there’s something special about setting a beautiful Easter table. Here are our favourite looks for 2025 to help you design your perfect tablescape.

GREENERY AND SOFT NEUTRALS

A more understated option, this palette is based on soft whites, stone tones and greens. Use a simple tablecloth or raw timber surface, simple cutlery and glassware with clean lines. Fresh eucalyptus or olive branches add height and scent without overwhelming the space. Perfect for those who prefer a timeless, tonal look.

Glass Shower Panels & Doors

WHITE AND GOLD WITH A MODERN EDGE

Stepping away from traditional pastels, a gold and white theme offers a contemporary alternative. Pair white linen with matte white dinnerware and brass or gold cutlery. Add height with slim white taper candles or a vase arrangement – a single magnolia bouquet or even a selection of basic twigs will complete the look.

PASTELS REIMAGINED

Pair blush or duck egg napkins with natural linen and softcoloured ceramics. Bring in florals with native blooms, or whatever your favourite may be. Layer with coloured glassware or vase, painted eggs or simple ribbon-tied cutlery for a fresh, modern take on Easter tradition.

s the days grow cooler, our homes naturally begin to reflect a shift in mood and energy. While the warmer months are all about bright colours and natural light, the autumn and winter seasons invite us to slow down, recharge and embrace a more serene way of living.

According to the Dulux Colour Forecast for 2025, Australians will increasingly be drawn to soft, muted tones that promote calm, comfort and a quiet sense of luxury. The Dulux Still palette –one of three key palettes in the forecast – is set to resonate, offering a refined blend of warm neutrals, earthy yellows, soft greens and cool blues.

CREATING YOUR CENTREPIECE

A swimming pool should be more than just a functional feature; it can be the centrepiece of your backyard, transforming it into a stunning water feature. Sean Lynch, owner of Pool Fab Pool + Landscape Creations, offers his top 10 tips for creating a beautifully designed pool.

1. Strategic placement: Position your pool in a way that doesn’t cut off a large section of your yard. This helps maintain an open, spacious feel.

2. Maximise small spaces: If space is limited, consider building the pool’s sides against your property boundary to integrate it with your fencing or yard’s edge.

3. Entrance considerations: Plan for one or two gates when designing the pool entrances. This ensures accessibility without overcrowding the area with multiple entry points.

4. Visibility matters: Place the pool where it can be easily seen from the main living areas of your home. This enhances safety by allowing you to monitor children and lets you enjoy the pool’s visual appeal and the soothing presence of water.

5. Purposeful design: Think about how you intend to use your pool. Whether it’s for lap swimming, leisure, or a fun zone for kids, your design should cater to these needs.

CREATING YOUR PERFECT POOL AND LANDSCAPE

DESIGNING YOUR POOL

When you design your pool with Poolfab, you will be able to see the finished pool before we even begin the build. Using our 3D Design Software, we will provide a customised design, fit with all of your requests. Your pool design will be created by one of our experienced landscape and pool designers or by the architect of your choice.

Poolfab can turn your landscape dreams into a reality by designing the perfect outdoor sanctuary for you. Through the use of soft and hard landscapes, we will enrich your pool area and outdoor space. Dramatic lighting can enhance quality plant selections, and creative garden shapes can make your backyard unique and inspiring.

At Poolfab, the structural integrity of our pools is our top priority. There are no shortcuts in building quality projects, and our team are required to perform to the highest of standards. We will not compromise on the quality of your project and pride ourselves on being the best Sunshine Coast pool builders.

6. Family-friendly features: Design with future generations in mind. Features that cater to children will attract families, whether it’s your own or potential buyers.

7. Space-savvy ideas: While a diving pool might seem exciting, it may not be practical. Assess your space and opt for a pool style that complements your backyard dimensions.

8. Social spaces: Pay special attention to areas where people can sit or lounge in the water. Enhance these spots with well-designed steps and benches to create inviting social spaces.

9. Integrated elements: If you’re including a spa or steps, incorporate them into the pool design. This can mean building them partially in and out of the pool to maintain a cohesive look.

10. Convenient access: Align the pool fence gate with the steps and your house door. This streamlined access makes it easier to move between the pool and the house.

With cooler temperatures and lower humidity, autumn creates ideal conditions for growing a variety of vegetables. Consider planting spinach, kale, carrots and broccoli – all of which thrive in the Sunshine Coast’s moderate climate. Beetroot and cabbage are also great picks for your garden. Add herbs such as parsley, coriander and thyme. For a quick-start crop, plant fast growers like radish or spring onions and enjoy results in just a few weeks.

LET’S GET GARDENING

Breathe new life into your garden as summer makes way for autumn.

DIY project: Create a composting station

A composting station is one of the best additions you can make to your garden – it cuts down on household waste and boosts your soil health in one go. To create your own, choose a shady, well-drained spot in the yard and install a simple three-bin system using timber pallets or recycled wood. One bin holds fresh scraps, the second is for partially broken-down compost, and the third is for ready-to-use soil. Add kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, dry leaves and even old newspaper. Turn the mix weekly and keep it slightly moist. Within weeks, you’ll have a nutrient-rich compost that improves soil structure, retains moisture and feeds your autumn plantings.

Autumn is also a great time to refresh your landscape with hardy native plants. Indigenous species are more likely to thrive in our conditions, attract native birds and insects and require less water. Consider planting firewheel trees, known for their striking red flowers, or the fast-growing and vibrant lilly pilly. Kangaroo paw, grevilleas and coastal rosemary (Westringia) also bring bold colour and movement to your garden beds throughout autumn. continued over >

Extend your time outdoors by creating a comfortable space to unwind. Add a weatherproof lounge setting or create a quiet reading nook with cushions and throws. An outdoor fire pit can warm up cooler nights, while a hanging chair or introducing a daybed brings a resort-style touch to even a small backyard. For a functional and stylish focal point, string up festoon lights or install solar lanterns to light pathways or dining areas.

tip!

April is an important month to feed your lawn and prepare it for winter. Horticultural experts Yates recommend applying a slowrelease fertiliser such as Yates Dynamic Lifter Concentrated Lawn Food, which combines composted chicken manure with added nutrients to promote healthy growth. Keep your mowing height at around two-and-ahalf to four centimetres and avoid scalping the lawn. Now is also a good time to aerate compacted soil and remove any build-up of thatch.

It’s not just about function – your garden can be beautiful, too. Autumn is a fantastic time to plant colour. Try the brilliant purple blooms of tibouchina, low-maintenance daisies, or cheerful violas and pansies in garden beds and pots. Orchids also love the cooler weather and make a stunning statement indoors and out. Group potted plants in odd numbers for maximum visual impact and mix heights, textures and tones for a layered look.

Leisure Furniture, Warana.

Did you know?

Creating a wildlife-friendly garden can be as simple as adding a bird bath or planting nectar-rich blooms. Native species like grevillea and banksia are magnets for birds, while flowering ground covers and shrubs provide shelter for lizards and frogs. Skip chemical sprays – opt for companion planting instead. Marigolds and nasturtiums help deter pests naturally, while netting and crushed eggshells can protect tender seedlings.

Autumn is the time to mulch garden beds. Not only does it suppress weeds and retain moisture, but it also improves soil health as it breaks down. Sugarcane mulch, bark chips and lucerne are all good choices. Aim for a layer five to seven centimetres thick, but keep mulch away from the base of plant stems to prevent rot. Well-mulched gardens can reduce evaporation by up to 70 per cent – perfect as rainfall tapers off.
