LIGHT YOUR HOME SMARTER

Lighting does more than brighten a room – it shapes its mood, defi nes its purpose and can even impact your energy bills. The right choices can help you create comfortable, functional spaces while keeping long-term running costs in check.

Think lumens, not watts

A single light bulb might not use much power on its own, but with the average Australian home housing around 37 bulbs, smart, energy-efficient lighting choices can still make a noticeable difference to your electricity bill. Gone are the days of buying bulbs based on wattage alone. These days, it’s all about lumens - the measure of how much light a bulb emits. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light.

As a rough guide, the Australian government’s sustainable homes resource, yourhome.gov.au, suggests the following:

• 420lm – table lamp

• 800lm – small room

• 930lm – medium room

• 1300lm – large room or work zone.

Cost-savings

When selecting lighting, consider long-term value rather than just the upfront price. While energy-efficient bulbs like LEDs may cost more initially, they last significantly longer and use far less power. For example, although halogen bulbs are cheaper to buy, LEDs can last five to 10 times longer, making them the more cost-effective option over time. You’ll see the biggest savings in rooms where lights are used frequently, such as kitchens and living areas, where bulbs are often on for two to three hours a day or more.

Five lighting tips

• Maximise natural light where possible – it’s free and makes a space feel more open.

• Use LEDs or CFLs to cut back on electricity costs.

• Install two-way switches in large rooms or long hallways for better access.

• Match the colour temperature to the function of the space.

• Keep your décor light - neutral walls bounce light more effectively.

Outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting needs to be both practical and durable. Look for fixtures that are weather-resistant and rated for outdoor use – check the IP (ingress protection) rating to ensure they’re suitable for exposure to rain, dust or coastal conditions.

For energy efficiency, choose solarpowered options where possible, especially for garden paths, driveways or accent lighting. They’re easy to install, require no wiring and run for free once set up. For wired lighting, LEDs are still the most efficient choice. They use far less energy than halogen and last much longer, even when exposed to the elements.

Use sensor or timer controls to avoid wasting power – motion sensors are ideal for security lights, while timers or dusk-todawn sensors work well for feature and entry lighting.

When planning your setup, think about how you use the space. Path lights and step lights improve safety and navigation, wall-mounted lights at entry points offer security and feature lighting can highlight trees, architectural elements or gardens to enhance the overall feel of being outdoors.

Kitchen lighting ideas

Lighting accounts for roughly 10 per cent of the average Australian household’s electricity use. Thankfully, the rise of LED lighting has helped to reduce costs. LEDs use around 75 per cent less energy than halogen bulbs.

Lighting in the kitchen needs to be both functional and well-placed. Start with good task lighting over key areas like the benchtop, sink and cooktop. Under-cabinet strip lights or directional downlights also work well. Pendants above an island bench can add ambience while still offering focused light. Aim for a bright, neutral white light to keep colours true and the space feeling clean.

Curtains and shutters both play an important role in bringing a room together. Window furnishings are about more than how they make a room look – they are also about how a room functions. Choosing between the two comes down to style preferences, how you use the space and what you need in terms of light, privacy and insulation.

Let’s start with shutters

Shutters are hard-wearing, easy to clean and made to last. They’re fitted to your window frame and can be opened, closed or tilted to control light and airflow. They suit a wide range of home styles –from classic to coastal to contemporary – and are also well-suited to rooms that get a lot of sun. White-toned, timber and faux timber finishes are the most popular choices, with faux options ideal for high-humidity spaces like bathrooms and laundries. Shutters offer excellent privacy while still letting in light. As a bonus, they also provide insulation for both temperature and sound. The only downside is that they tend to cost a little more as they’re more of a permanent fixture.

Moving on to curtains

Curtains are, of course, softer and more versatile. They create a sense of warmth and there’s a huge range of fabrics, colours and styles to choose from. You can use them to achieve a certain style, add texture or bring in pattern and colour. Curtains also tend to be more costeffective (depending on the fabric you choose), especially if you’re updating more than one room.

Sheer curtains are great for living areas where you want light but still need some privacy. Blockout curtains are ideal for bedrooms, especially for those who are light sleepers or want to insulate the room against heat or cold. Keep in mind that curtains aren’t ideal for bathrooms as they may attract mould from the humidity and damp environment.

Room by room

In bedrooms, curtains are often the better choice, especially if you’re after a cosy, restful feel. A double-track system that

includes sheers for the day and blockouts for night is a practical and popular option.

For kitchens and bathrooms, shutters tend to be the most popular option due to their durability and ease of cleaning. Just make sure the material you choose is suitable for moisture-

prone zones.

Living areas can go either way. Shutters give a clean, architectural look that suits bright, open-plan spaces. Curtains, on the other hand, can soften the edges of a room and help with acoustics in larger areas.

Can’t decide? Remember that you don’t have to choose just one style. A layered look, consisting of shutters for structure and sheers for a softer feel, is becoming increasingly popular.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TILES

If you’re updating your bathroom, tiles are likely to be a key part of the design. They’re waterproof, hard-wearing and one of the most practical ways to protect walls and floors from moisture. With so many shapes, colours and finishes on offer, it can be hard to know where to start. The best approach is to narrow down your options based on what suits your space and how you use it. Here, the expert team from Andersens provide their tips on how to choose the right floor for your renovated bathroom.

TYPES OF FINISHES:

Ceramic tiles come in multiple finishes, which can dramatically affect the feel of your bathroom.

Gloss tiles have a shiny surface and can look very glamorous. Gloss tiles become slippery in wet environments, so it’s best to reserve them for walls, splashbacks, and low-foot traffic areas. Choosing accent or border tiles in high gloss will further help to draw the eye. If your bathroom

is on the small side, glossy tiles can help to create the illusion of space by reflecting light. If your bathroom gets a lot of direct sunlight, however, go for a lower-gloss tile to avoid causing uncomfortable glare.

Matte surfaces are on trend right now, appearing on everything from walls to dinnerware. For bathrooms, matt ceramic tiles are suitable for flooring as they provide more traction. If you’re aiming for a natural or understated look, matt tiles are ideal.

SIZE:

When choosing the size of your tile, aim to keep the size in proportion to the size of your bathroom. Lately, large format tiles have been popular thanks to the wealth of new styles now available. Although mosaic tile is a perennial favourite for smaller bathrooms, larger tiles can make the space feel bigger when used correctly. One thing to remember is that smaller tiles will create more grout lines, making the grout

more noticeable. Match the colour of your grout to your tile to prevent it from being as visually dominant.

When deciding on the colour or pattern of your tile, it’s all about mood. Light-coloured tiles will lend an airy tranquillity to your bathroom and are a good choice for smaller bath spaces. Dark tiles can create broody and warm effects. Patterned tiles have

great impact and can range in style from detailed Moroccan motifs to more contemporary geometric designs. Wall-to-floor patterned tiles can be impressive but can also be too busy to comfortably look at. For a more subtle look, try using patterned tiles on just one surface or as a feature strip.

Autumn in Queensland is pretty special –cooler evenings, blue skies (usually) and a real natural beauty. And if you are looking for a way to invite that beauty into your home, look no further. Vault Interiors, led by founder and principal stylist Justine Wilson, has identified the top styling trends for autumn 2025, offering simple yet effective ways to create a more inviting and comfortable space.

SEASONAL STYLE

As the seasons shift and the days grow cooler, it is the perfect time to introduce warmth and cosiness into the home.

“Autumn is the perfect time to refresh your home and create a warm, inviting atmosphere,” Justine says. “By making a few simple swaps – like introducing richer fabrics, warm lighting and natural elements – you can effortlessly transition your space for the cooler months, while maintaining a stylish and functional interior.”

Read on to discover Justine’s top five tips.

BRIGHTEN UP

With shorter daylight hours, maximising natural light becomes essential. Replacing artwork with mirrors helps reflect natural light, making interiors feel brighter. Additionally, layering candles – whether real or LED versions with timers – adds a warm and ambient glow, enhancing the atmosphere as the evenings grow longer.

LAYER WITH TEXTILES

Soft furnishings provide an easy and effective way to transition interiors for autumn. Swapping out cushion covers from cotton and linen to plush fabrics such as velvet, bouclé, or heavier weaves instantly creates a cosier atmosphere. Earthy tones, including navy, rust, olive, emerald and mustard, add richness to the space while reflecting the seasonal landscape.

BRING NATURE INDOORS

Incorporating natural elements into the home enhances warmth and comfort. Seasonal foliage such as dried flowers, eucalyptus, or pampas grass in vases introduces an organic touch to interiors. Wooden or woven accessories further contribute to a cosy and grounded aesthetic that complements the autumn season.

INTRODUCE EXTRA SEATING

get the look!

With a sleek design and durable construction, the Lucas stool is crafted from solid American Ashwood. It’s available from Sitting Around, Warana.

With the shift to indoor entertaining, having additional seating ensures a welcoming environment for guests. Incorporating ottomans or compact armchairs in living areas provides extra comfort without overwhelming the space. In dining areas, stylish stools or folding chairs can be easily stored and brought out when needed for gatherings.

KEEP OUTDOOR SPACES INVITING

Cooler temperatures do not mean outdoor areas should be neglected. Adding outdoor heaters, cosy blankets and cushions to alfresco spaces allows homeowners to continue enjoying these areas. An outdoor fire pit can serve as a focal point, encouraging guests to gather and stay warm on those crisp autumn evenings.

HOW TO: LAY A CONCRETE PATH

Laying a concrete garden path is a surprisingly straightforward project that can make a big impact. Not only does it create a clean and practical way to move through your garden, but it also adds structure and style to your outdoor space. Whether you’re linking the back door to the shed or winding a gentle curve through the veggie patch, a well-laid path gives the garden a

nished, thoughtful feel.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• Timber for framework and pegs

• Wheelbarrow

• Shovels

• Steel trowel

• Garden rake

Transform the heart of your home.

Transform your kitchen without the mess of demolition.

Engineered to last a lifetime, our durable surfaces, along with made-to-measure doors, can be installed in as little as a day.

Perfect for makeovers or brand new kitchens.

STEP ONE

Start by building a frame to shape your path. Curves are achievable – use flexible plywood for the edges and secure it in place with wooden pegs. Check with your local hardware team about whether reinforcing mesh is needed. For smaller paths, it may not be necessary, depending on local council guidelines.

STEP TWO

Work out how much concrete you’ll need by multiplying the area of the path by the depth. Always allow for a little extra –around 0.3 cubic metres – to account for any miscalculations or spillage.

STEP THREE

Soak the ground the night before, then dampen it again just before pouring to help the concrete set properly.

STEP FOUR

Mix your concrete in a wheelbarrow using cement, sand and gravel. Gradually add water until you reach a thick, workable consistency – not too wet.

STEP FIVE

Pour the mix into the formwork and level it out with a shovel or rake. Remove any air bubbles, then use a screed board to compact and smooth the surface.

USEFUL BITS & BOBS

We’ve compiled fi ve handy tips to help you with your renovation projects.

Remodelling your home office? Why not make the wall paint magnetic? This way you can easily stick memos and important papers above your desk.

Is a room feeling particularly dull? Brighten it by adding colour to the wall trim and doors. Highlighting these areas with paint in a complementary colour to the walls will bring new life to a space.

Short on laundry space? Install a wall-mounted drying rack or fold-out clothes airer to free up floor space and keep things tidy.

Time to invest in new furniture? It’s okay to browse online, but when it comes to making a purchase, be sure to hit the shops. Looking at furniture in person gives you a greater sense of styling to ensure pieces work together. It also assists in ensuring the pieces will fit correctly into your space.

If you want to introduce open shelving to display your homewares, photo frames or precious items, keep the design simple so the eye will be drawn to the pieces on show.
