LOOKING FOR FLOOR & WALL COVERINGS? Refresh your home with a modern look at a competitive price

hat’s in your dream kitchen? A six-burner freestanding stove with multifunction oven, a butler’s pantry with trapdoor to the wine cellar, or is extra bench space and a decent amount of storage all you really crave? I’d settle for a dishwasher that works – the kitchen in my home is a little dated, and we don’t have a lot of bench space, and the oven is a little temperamental. Oh, and the window leaks in rain. But it’s still the heart of the home, which is all most people want from their kitchen, isn’t it? Actually, a new kitchen is what many home renovators are after, so this month’s cover story is dedicated to this room. We show you how small changes can make a big difference, and we take a look at rangehoods, splashbacks and flooring. We also show there is a lot to be learned from commercial kitchens. Over in style we’re celebrating the once-ubiquitous dressing table. If you don’t have one in your bedroom, ladies, it’s time to go vanity shopping. Plus we have a few DIY projects, tips and ideas to get you inspired.

Chop and change

K

itchens are the most expensive room to renovate, but changes, even relatively small ones, can be dramatic, revitalising the entire living space. One of the easiest fixes for any room is a new coat of paint, and this is just as true in the kitchen. It’s best to buy a paint made for kitchens and bathrooms – it will be easy to keep clean. Cleaning tiles and revitalising the grout is also a great cheat – if the tiles are stained or you hate the colour, you can paint them with tile paint and they’ll be transformed. Next, take a look at your cupboard doors and benchtops. If you’re on a tight budget, replacing these might not be an option, but you can give cupboards a facelift

with new laminates, veneers or paint. You can replace benchtops – timber and stone composites are beautiful and on trend. Or you can line the current bench with stainless steel or thin stone slab. Walk around your kitchen at night and look at ways to improve the lighting design. Add strip lighting under cabinets, above sinks and in the pantry. Ensure work areas are well lit, and add ambient lighting over eating and entertaining zones. Finally, don’t forget the details such as handles and tapware. Updating the cupboard and drawer handles makes a surprisingly big difference, and replacing your ageing taps with modern mixers is an inexpensive way to add that final flourish.

For a kitchen light with style cred we love the range of replica Tom Dixon pendants from iEnergy 5477 7788.

Pulling power A rangehood will probably be on your shopping list for your new kitchen. Today’s rangehoods are now quieter, stronger and easier to clean than hoods of old, and if it’s been a while since you last bought one, you’ll find an overwhelming array of models, including wall canopies, island models, plus retractable canopies and those mounted in the ceiling, and even those that pop up from the bench. Think about your cooking habits and needs when choosing a rangehood – you’ll want one that is about the size of your cooktop. Also keep in mind how you want the air extracted – some rangehoods expel externally while others filter the air and pump it back into the room.

Restaurant quality When creating a kitchen layout, there is a lot home renovators can learn from commercial kitchens. If you’re a busy cook, it’s a good idea to have plenty of bench space on either side of your cooktop. Think about the flow of the space. Having the bin close to the prep bench, which is handy to the sink, will make food preparation much easier. While providing space around the dishwasher means it doesn’t become a tripping hazard when the door is open. Commercial kitchens often feature an island bench so there is a sensible flow between prep area, cooktop and sink. An island is also a great place where family can gather and chat with the cook. Also consider practical materials such as stainless steel benches and oversized ovens that are used in commercial spaces – they work just as well in home kitchens.

Back it up No longer just the wall behind the sink and stove, splashbacks are now important design elements in the kitchen. Stainless steel splashbacks have a contemporary feel, while toughened glass covering a painted or papered wall offers flexibility in terms of design. You can even have your favourite photo blown up onto a printed splashback. But tiles are still a popular material – as it’s a small area to cover, splash out on high-end ceramic glass or stone tiles for this part of the room.

Well connected If you have an open-plan space, continuing the floor throughout the kitchen and into the living space creates a desirable connection and flow between the rooms. When shopping for flooring, choose a non-slip durable surface, and be sure the flooring will be comfortable – keen cooks will be spending much time on their feet in the kitchen. Think carefully about colour and texture and how these will interact with the other elements in the room.

BATHROOM //

DIY PROJECT If you love bathing in your newly renovated bathroom, you’re going to need a bath caddy for your book, glass of wine and candle or two. But if you’re short on cash after paying the plumber and tiler, don’t despair – you can knock up a caddy in an afternoon. A caddy doesn’t have to be anything more than a good bit of timber but we reckon you can do a bit better. This one is easy to make and doubles as a handy tray. • Grab a piece of timber large enough to sit nicely on your bath with a bit of overhang, plus some extra strips of that timber – enough to create a frame. You’ll also need waterproof stain, galvanised nails, wood glue, a hammer and handsaw.

Best of both worlds The trend towards natural materials such as timber and stone in the bathroom is showing no signs of abating, which is why we love timber-look tiles. They offer a timeless look but are easy to clean and maintain. Perfect!

• Measure the piece of timber that will be the base of your tray and cut four pieces from your smaller strip of timber to create the frame. There is no need for elaborate or angled joints – just butt the edges of the frame up against each other and glue them together. • Once the glue is dry, pop the base on top of the frame and nail it into place. er • If you want to be clever and you have leftover timber, you can add feet to the base of your tray so it fits snuggly on your bath. • Now it’s time to paint it, let it dry, then get soaking in the tub!

From urgh to ahh! This bathroom hasn’t had much done to it but it is transformed thanks to some clever changes. The owners kept the wall sconces, mirror and washbasin, and gave the floor a good clean. The old door was removed, opening up the small space, and the new paintwork has lifted the room – the white is fresh and clean and the on-trend grey is subtle and complements the floor. The biggest change are the old tiles around the bath – replaced by subway tiles that are contemporary but sensitive to the period feel.

TIP

Even if the rest of your windows are covered by blinds and shutters, consider using curtains in the bedroom – they add instant warmth and softness to the space. And you can always take them down over summer.

Winter linen lowdown • When shopping for blankets look for those made from natural fibres such as wool and cotton. In our region where winters are mild, cotton blankets in waffle weaves usually give enough warmth.

• Once winter is over, wash your bedding before storing it away for next winter.

FLOORING // Soft v hard Perfect for lolling around on, carpet comes in so many colours, styles and weaves that you’ll have a hard time choosing. Carpets are made from a range of fibres including jute, acrylic, wool, cotton and various blends. Carpet is a great choice for units and multi-level homes, as it provides sound insulation, and you’ll find carpet in every budget. Timbers, on the other hand, are much easier to clean than carpets. Natural floorboards look great, and are available in a range of widths, colours and textures. Keep them clean with nothing more than a broom and mop, and revitalise old timber by sanding back and re-staining.

TIP Colour v neutral When shopping for floor coverings – whether you’re looking for timber, tiles or carpet – the first choice you need to make is whether to go for something colourful or neutral. If you have vibrant furnishings and lots of artwork, a neutral flooring is a wise choice. A colourful rug, on the other hand, can introduce interest into a neutral space. You could always hedge your bets by choosing a neutral colour but go for a strong texture to add depth and interest on the floor.

Rug shopping? Don’t forget that the pile of the rug makes a huge difference to its look and feel. Flat-weave rugs are durable and easy to clean. A shaggy rug adds cosiness and visual interest straight away. Loop pile rugs are textured and touchable, while a deep or high shag pile is the ultimate in plushness.

BUILDING PRODUCT //

Build it up Brick is one of the oldest, most versatile and most popular building products available, and for good reason – buildings made from bricks and mortar require very little maintenance, are long-lasting and sustainable. However, in the past few decades, the humble brick has been shunned for render, cladding or other materials. But bricks are well and truly back in favour with architects and designers. New brick products are emerging that have serious design credibility, as companies such as PGH Bricks & Pavers, Boral and Austral invest in new colours and designs. PGH has developed bricks in hues called Watermelon, Cosmic (a pale aubergine) and Wasabi.

Austral has commissioned fashion designer Camilla Franks to create a range of vibrant colours. Innovations in metallic and ceramic materials are also creating bricks that demand to be noticed. Brick sizes and shapes are also changing. And it’s not just on the outside that bricks are coming into their own. Home renovators are choosing brick for internal walls. Glazed bricks are perfect for kitchens, while innovative bricklayers are laying bricks in new ways to create feature walls with a difference. The mortar is an important piece of the puzzle. Designers can colour match to the brick for a seamless look, or highlight individual bricks with mortar in a contrasting shade.

Because they are made from natural materials and need next to no maintenance, bricks are incredibly sustainable (you won’t have to change your house bricks every few decades). But their eco-cred really comes from the fact they offer great thermal performance. In summer, bricks absorb the sun’s heat, keeping the home cool during the day. While during winter months, the heat inside is held there by the bricks. Advocacy group Think Brick Australia states, “By using bricks in conjunction with good solar passive design and insulation, home owners can create a house that requires no artificial heating or cooling in nearly all parts of Australia, significantly reducing energy use.”

Create a teepee What you’ll need: • Grab a few basics from your tool kit including an electric drill, pencil and measuring tape plus a sewing machine, thread, sewing chalk and a ruler • A flat king- or queen-sized bed sheet • About a metre of cotton rope – we used five-millimetre sash cord • Five pieces of wooden dowel – about 19 millimetres in diameter and 190 centimetres long • Bias binding and ribbon

STEP 2 Thread the cotton rope through each hole, leaving the same length of rope on each end. Wrap the rope around the dowels to create the frame of your teepee. Then tie off the rope tightly.

STEP 1 Measure 30 centimetres from the end of each piece of dowel and mark with your pencil. Then drill a hole in each dowel.

STEP 3 Now lay out your bed sheet and cut out four trapezium shapes (trapeziums are triangles with the tops cut off). The trapeziums should be about 140 centimetres high with an 85-centimetre base. In one of the pieces cut a slit for the door and add bias binding to the slit so it doesn’t fray.

create organised storage space for all the rooms of your home STEP 4 It’s time to sew the long edges of each of the five sides together using a four-centimetre seam allowance. Then hem the top and the bottom and you’ve done your teepee cover. STEP 5 While the fabric is still inside out, and on each seam, sew a loop of bias binding so that each piece of dowel will fit snugly in the loop. STEP 6 Turn the fabric the right way and pop it on the frame, making sure you feed the pieces of dowel through your loops.

STEP 7 You can sew pieces of ribbon onto the front door flaps and the adjacent pieces of fabric to keep the front flaps open. Grab a picnic rug and cushions, and your teepee is ready to go.

TIP

If your teepee will be spending a bit of time outside, it’s a good ide a to waterproof the fabric before you get sewing , otherwise you’ll find it gets dirty and mouldy very quickly. Just pick up some waterproofing spray from your hardw are store and follow the directions on the can.

Translating denim textures and colours to the home, New Skin is perfect for the renovator after an understated style to provide tranquillity to a room. Pictured here is New Skin’s Trempealeau, a perfectly moody hue for the bedroom.

Say no to plastic Use canvas rather than plastic drop cloths to cover floors and furniture while you paint. Canvas is heavy and stays in place, while plastic will slip around, which can be annoying, messy and dangerous if you’re using a step ladder. Canvas cloths will also soak up spills, while paint on plastic stays wet – so if you walk on spills you may track that paint through other rooms of the home.

COLOUR PICK Blue is big in paint this season, and we love Dulux Passionate Blue, a cosy hue that’s perfect for bedrooms and family rooms.

TIPS // Glaze over Want to make your small bathroom appear roomier? Update any visual elements that stop the eye, such as shower screens. Many old bathrooms feature coloured or frosted glass screens – replace these with clear glass and you’ll be amazed how much bigger the bathroom looks.

Cheap trick You can quickly update your living spaces by changing the flooring. If you have old carpets, rip them out and replace with a laminate flooring. You should be able to find laminate products that will cost you less than $40 a square metre laid. And with an incredible array of styles and colours, you’re bound to find something you like for that price.

Balancing act If you have high ceilings and your room doesn’t feel right, it could be because it’s a little bottom heavy. You might need to create visual interest higher up to help bring balance to the space. There are many ways you can do this. Invest in some tall indoor plants or place a large sculpture or narrow piece of art on a shelf. Relocate your wall-hung pictures and photos to cover some of that empty space. Invest in some pendant lights or place floor lamps on side tables to draw up the eye. Try hanging curtains higher than the top of windows and use wall-mounted shelving to display photos, pot plants or books.

BUYER BEWARE If you are buying a property to renovate, beware that some improvements cost a lot more than others. Every property is different but as a general rule, look for a home with no electrical or plumbing issues (these can be very expensive to fix). Ensure the roof and foundations are sound and look out for major cracks or rotting floorboards (again, these can be costly and tricky to repair).

Paint your bath Bath seen better days? Don’t replace it, just paint it. You’ll need gloves, a kitchen scourer, some abrasive bathroom cleaner, wet and dry sandpaper, masking paper and tape, lint-free cloths, rust solvent, two sealable solvent-resistant containers, flat stirrers, bath paint and a quality bristle brush. STEP 1: A successful paint job starts with proper preparation of the surface of the old bath. Open up the windows, pop on your gloves and give the tub a really good clean with a scourer and the abrasive cleaner. Thoroughly wash away the cleaner and dry the tub. STEP 2: Grab your wet and dry sandpaper and give the entire surface a going over to remove

the shine. A rough surface gives the paint something to stick to. Now grab a clean, dry cloth and rub down the surface with the solvent. STEP 3: Wait for the solvent to dry completely before protecting the area around the bath with masking paper and tape. Be sure to cover the floor, the tap, tiles and the plughole. Wrap plastic bags around the taps, so water doesn’t make its way onto the wet paint. STEP 4: Now prepare your paint. Bath paint comes in two parts, so you’ll need to mix them together. Before you do, use a separate stirrer to stir the individual tins, then pour

the tins into the container and stir with a fresh stirrer until they are completely mixed, about five minutes. Pour half the mixture into the other container and seal both containers. STEP 5: Now pop one of the containers in a nice cold fridge and let the other container stand for an hour or so until it is at room temperature. Give it another really good stir. STEP 6: Grab your brush and start painting – starting at the bottom of the bath work your way up in vertical strokes, then across in horizontal strokes to ensure an even coat. Stir your paint container

every now and then as you go. STEP 7: Once you are done with the first coat, clean your brush in the rust solvent. Give it a good 24 hours to dry before applying the second coat. STEP 8: Grab your second container out of the fridge and let it sit for a good hour at room temperature. Then stir it well for at least five minutes. Apply it the same way you applied the first coat. STEP 9: Once the second coat is finished, wait until it is well and truly dry (about 24 hours) before removing the tape and paper. STEP 10: Leave it a good week before using your rejuvenated bath for the first time.

OUTDOOR //

Make a mauve For a fantastic ground cover with a pop of colour, you can’t go past the native violet. Use it to quickly cover a bare patch after renovating, between stepping stones or in damp shady spots where lawns fail to thrive.

Make a connection If you want to maintain a connection between indoors and out, plan your interior living space and outdoor space at the same time. Do you really need a dining table inside and one on the deck as well? Perhaps adding some casual seating on the deck is a better use of space. Think holistically and treat your deck as another room.

Off the wall Vertical gardens are a great solution when space is tight, but even if you have a big backyard they are a wonderful addition to a deck or courtyard. Check you local hardware store or nursery for DIY vertical garden kits. You can also include vertical interest with climbing plants or by attaching window boxes to walls and fences and fill with colourful plants.

1. Prepare the ground. If you have clay soil, dig in some well-rotted manure, mulch and compost. If your soil is sandy, add some top soil and a wetting agent. 2. Level out the ground with a soil spreader. 3. Spread out the lawn builder evenly, then wet down the soil so it’s ready for the turf. 4. To lay the turf, start with the first piece and lay it down in the area’s furthermost corner. Try not to over-handle or stretch the turf. To avoid air pockets or ugly cracks and lines, butt the pieces of turf snugly up against each other. Use secateurs to cut each piece to fit. 5. Water in the new turf as soon as it is laid – a good drink encourages the roots to settle in. Try not to walk on the turf for a good month or so and keep it damp for the first six weeks.

Winter time is the perfect time to reseal and protect your exposed aggregate or decorative surfaces from the harsh Australian weather. Sealing or resealing will dramatically improve the appearance of your concrete, pavers, tiles or stone. We have a sealer for all surfaces that are easy to apply. Enjoy a durable surface that is easier to maintain and clean and will keep away mould and mildew. The addition of a slip resistance additive is also available to ensure your safety on sloping driveways or just rainy days. We stock a range of clear and coloured sealers to suit every budget offering trade direct prices to the public.

TIP

SMALL STORIES Short on space? Use occasional pieces to replace larger items such as a small stool for a side table or petite battered bench in place of a coffee table.

Shopping for lounge cushions? Grab two pairs, in contrasting patterns or colours, for extra depth and interest.

MAKE A MOOOOVE If you love the look of a cow hide rug but want more, look out for other hide products including bolsters, stools and cushions such as this Escano ottoman in black and white, $595, from Art Hide, arthide.com.au. If you like the look of hide but are a little squeamish about the real thing, invest in faux hides and furs.

tip. CUPBOARD LOVE Don’t forget to style up your cupboards and walk-in robe. If you’re lucky enough to have a large space, lay down a comfy rug, wallpaper a bare wall, and above all, fill the space with light. When you’re struggling to find something to wear in the morning, it helps if you can easily see your shoes.

GREY AREA We’re loving the Mad Menesque fabrics from Warwick’s Richmond Collection. Find out more by calling Rob Larson’s Curtains & Interior Décor on 5444 2412.

HIGHS AND LOWS If your bedroom is cosy you might be tempted to go for a smaller, lower bed that doesn’t take up much space. But smaller-scale pieces can actually make the room look littler than it is. Go for a high bed with a taller headboard. You’ll be surprised how it makes the room look larger. Conversely, in a larger space choose a low bed against a short, wide headboard. Taking the bed off the wall and backing it up with cabinetry, like the owners have done in this room, helps segment the large space.

Go Arty may be filled with beautiful canvases, but Maroochydore’s favourite art gallery offers more than just good looks. Whether it’s our property styling service to get the “Sold” sign up on your existing home sooner, a perfect bridal registry gift for that hard to buy for couple, or the chance to bring out your “inner artist” in our art and life drawing classes, Go Arty offers the perfect answer to every interior style question.
