Editor’s note W

orking on My Renovation gives me the opportunity to meet with, speak to and learn from many people in the industry. From contractors and businesses owners through to designers and stylists, there are so many people who make up the renovation and residential construction industry. By far, I find meeting real-life renovators the most interesting. These people hold such a passion and love for renovating – it’s exciting. Quite often I am also approached by people who are interested in renovating but are yet to take the plunge due to a variety of reasons. Two of the biggest questions people ask is: “Why renovate? What benefit is there?’’ Which leads me to this month’s cover story. In this edition we take a look at the reasons to embark on your own project. We also take a look at the recently staged Queensland Architecture Awards and share some design tips for creating an outdoor patio. Why renovate? Not all budgets stretch to purchasing a new home. Renovating can be a great way to save money. If you are smart about remodelling, it can be a way to make money. For other people, it’s a chance to design their forever home from scratch, at a reasonable price. While other homeowners simply enjoy the planning and tasks associated with renovating.

NEW LOVE A family home contains many memories. As a result it can be hard to let go of the property and put it up for sale. Renovating can bring new love and renewed life to a tired, old home.

Flipping houses Buying and renovating a property with the view of selling has increased in popularity in recent years. However, if you haven’t gone down this track before, it’s important to call on the help of experienced tradespeople, project managers and other experts. Self-education is important before embarking on a project. Lean on advice from experts and thoroughly research the market – don’t rush into buying a property without knowing facts, sales figures and prices. The biggest question to ask yourself is if the numbers will stack up. Spend time working on a spreadsheet that details all costings including the property purchase price, renovation costs including labour and tax and sale price based on real estate predictions and average prices in the area.

Interior stylist and DIY guru Danni Morrison says there are many reasons to renovate… “For me, character, charm and a homely feel are all important factors when creating a warm environment in your home, all of which the majority of new homes lack simply due to their age. Renovating gives you the option to live somewhere and really get a feel for the space before deciding how and what to renovate. Of course you can design a new home to the exact specs you want, however it won’t have the same feel as a beautiful 100-year-old Queenslander or a 20-year-old colonial style estate. These sorts of properties have beautiful old bones and natural charm. They may just need a new kitchen and lick of paint to bring it back to its former glory. Renovating can be stressful, but more importantly it’s satisfying. Inspiring architecture The Sunshine Coast was well represented at the 2016 Australian Institute of Architect’s Queensland State Architecture Awards, which were announced on June 24. Following an extensive Regional Architecture Awards program, 83 projects vied for state honours. Among the 48 winning projects were Sunshine Coast firms Majstorovic Architecture, Teeland Architects and Sparks Architects. Queensland chapter president Bruce Wolfe congratulated winners and

entrants for continuing to push boundaries and championing quality design in all areas of architectural practice. “It is inspiring to see such a range of incredible designs and project typologies happening all over the state and particularly heartening to see such strong sustainable elements at the core of many projects,’’ he says. Award winners are now in the running for the National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in November.

Sunday House – Teeland Architects Award Sunday House adapts a 1970s brick building to better utilise its unique location backing onto Noosa National Park. With minimal alterations to the plan form it manages to completely transform the character of the house by addressing the issue of providing outlook to the rear of the property without significantly impacting the existing structure. 3. Use a brush to cut into edges of your wall or any section that your roller will find difficult to reach. Lightly feather your brushwork into the wall to make blending with your roller easier. 4. You will need a full cover texture roller to apply the product. These rollers have been designed to hold and spread more material. how to: INSTALL A STAINLESS STEEL SPLASHBACK

iles tend to be the most popular choice when it comes to kitchen splashbacks. However, for a sleek and contemporary style, stainless steel is a great product option. It tends to be a little more expensive but the material looks great, it is easy to clean and is heat and water resistant. Stainless steel panels can be installed directly over existing tiles or on to plasterboard. The product will suit any kitchen style and colour. The panels can be purchased pre-cut to fit standard sized spaces or can be custom made for your requirements. The great thing? These panels are easy to install and will give

your kitchen an immediate contemporary design boost. STEP ONE Once you have purchased the panel to fit the required space, you can get to work. Purchase silicone and apply it along the back of the splashback every eight to 10 centimetres along the length of the product. STEP TWO Now it’s time to place the splashback on the wall. Line it up to perfectly position it against the wall. To ensure the splashback stays in position while the silicone is drying, wedge some packers under the base of the material to keep it in place.
