Slick Rock- Mountain Biking Paradise. Slick Rock Biking Trail. Those acquainted with Moab will undoubtedly have heard or read about the Slick Rock Bike Trail. Probably one of the world’s hottest mountain bike trails, Slickrock is what a lot of folks think about whenever they consider Moab. Moab’s amazing surge to fame in the mountain biking community is equalled only by the extraordinary geological events that created it many eons ago. Inevitably, as time progresses, exactly the same geological events that created these canyon lands will in the end destroy them Luckily for us for us, nature’s sense of timing coincided with the advent of the mountain bike. Moab is situated near to the banks of the Colorado River and is the jumping off point for recreational excursions of all kinds. The industry here is tourism, and consequently there are lots of restaurants, bars and lodgings readily available. Compared with other rides in the area though, Slickrock is more of a riding playground. It is nevertheless a great spot to ride and will give you ample opportunity to put your skills to the test. Slickrock’s proximity to town and unique landscape make it the best way to fully familiarize yourself with the area. The fantastic thing about Slickrock is that you can stick to the main path or explore any of countless side trips. The Slickrock Trail consists of three main sections, there and back (also known as a lollipop stick or a cherry stem), a 6.8-mile loop, and an optional 2.3-mile ”practice loop”. The lead-in, loop, and practice loop are clearly marked by white dashed lines to prevent riders from straying from the trail or becoming lost. This loop is fun with sections of tight, technical single track, some whoop-te-dos, some straight, fast stretches and some excellent views. It is part of the Chilhowee trail complex, so options for longer and shorter routes abound.There are also several excellent places to camp and even catch a few trout while you’re at it. Most folks do the trail in one short day; but if you add an overnight stay, you’ll find some excellent hiking, fishing and exploring besides fun wheeling. South Mesa. Starting at the four-way stop junction with Spanish Trail Road, this route takes the paved Spanish Valley Drive up to and beyond Ken’s Lake. A steep gravel road crests Flat Pass to parallel the right hand fork of Mill Creek upstream a ways before crossing it and continuing the climb towards the base of South Mesa. This is a fascinating rocky route because it peaks close to the bottom of the mesa then winds through rolling country and ends back at Mill Creek.You forded the stream three times in a stunning slickrock canyon before attaining the spur that takes you up and out of the canyon to Moab. Klondike Bluffs.

This course weaves through the bleached, clay hills of a clean and sterile landscape turns into Little Valley and turns into the canyon that’s the portal to a wide, tilted plane of slickrock. After reaching a soil roadbed, the route almost doubles back on itself as it climbs up to the Klondike Bluffs. Portal Trail. This is where the rubber meets the road, the pinnacle of mountain biking,the epitome of the sport, a ride only fit for the strong, smart and skilled–a place where you test your skills to the very limit. You will find ledges, loose rock, deep sand, hard-pack, slickrock, gigantic rock rubble, and every combination of these that you can imagine. This ride is incredibly dangerous!
