In the design business, changes involving reorganizing, redecorating, entertaining and building a new home can be stressful, but also invigorating. Just ask the three young families whose homes are profiled in this issue of N Home. They took on the challenge of designing houses that are new and fresh, but throughout the process, they remained true to their real lives. Their new homes reflect their commitment to family life as well as personal style. Just as we count on our two-legged family members to keep us grounded and engaged, we also look to our four-legged family members! Love of design and love of pets can go hand in hand if you follow some of our suggestions in “The Dog House.” From dog-friendly furnishings and upholstery to What’s N trends and choosing the right countertop, this issue of N Home is packed with ideas to refresh your home. There’s excitement in adding the new and stylish to your surroundings, but I also believe in living a real life – and that requires staying engaged and remembering that nothing is ever perfect! If the dog drags in dirt or the kids leave bikes on the front lawn, it helps to remember these are just beautiful reminders of a full life. As we present this new edition of N Home to you, I feel blessed to be associated with our team of talented Nandina designers who produce inspiring and refreshing results week in, week out. As you browse through these articles and see their work, I think you’ll agree that Real Life, Real Style is not only a slogan at Nandina, it is a conviction we share with each other and with all of our clients. his hip urban cottage home was designed by

Nandinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Michele Merritt for a local restaurateur who originally hails from NYC and has a fast-paced lifestyle. Naturally, the space needed to reflect his edgy personal style, yet still provide a relaxing oasis away from the hustle and bustle of life. Mixing animal prints and hides throughout, along with iron and other strong materials, creates a casual earthiness and permanence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That juxtaposition was my inspiration for the design elements, a cottage that feels like home with all of the associated comforts (and then some), but with a distinct urban feel reminiscent of larger cities. To that end, we played with textures, contrasts in color and material, and scale,â&#x20AC;? Michele said. Iron gear tables lend their strength and urban feel to the living space. It’s advisable to live simply when relocating from city to city and country to country. From New York to Chicago to Asia, and for the past seven years, Switzerland, Ben and Ann Folk had found a way to acquire just enough to reflect their personal style yet make each move fairly seamless. However, relocating to Atlanta was going to require putting down deeper roots. With a two-year-old son, they wanted to invest in a permanent home for their young family. They found a newly built house in Morningside, one of the most coveted neighborhoods in Atlanta.

“Elegant but approachable was the Folks’ desire for their dining room,” explained Lead Interior Designer Jessie LaFalce. Unlined Kravet linen provides privacy while filtering light. Velvet host chairs by Lee Industries are a modern interpretation of a traditional wingback chair. The large scale Visual Comfort light fixture adds unexpected drama while maintaining the airiness of the room. |

Starting with only their most important furnishings, art, and accessories, the Folks were a bit overwhelmed with the prospect of designing a home with an essentially empty canvas. “From our first design meeting, Ben and Ann made it clear that although they had purchased a new home and had only minimal furnishings to start with, they really wanted their personalities reflected in every room,” said Jessie LaFalce, Nandina Lead Designer – Atlanta. LaFalce immediately realized that the Folks love a clean Mid-Century Modern aesthetic with a nod to Scandinavian influences, a genre she loves to work in. The modern farmhouse architecture of their new house was going to blend easily with their style. When LaFalce made the initial design presentation, she focused on presenting each piece of furniture as a sculptural element against the clean architectural palette of the house. Her introduction of color pops in blue, red, and yellow were an intentional historic reference to the masters of the mid-century like Frank Lloyd Wright, who often blended the bright primary colors into his designs. Teasing out the personalities and interests of the couple in the design proved to be the most rewarding part of the project. “Everything about this family is interesting, unpretentious and real,” commented LaFalce. From Ben’s love of photography and collecting unusual artifacts like authentic tribal masks, to the way that they photographed their son’s beloved teddy bear in historic sites around the world, their love of life and culture emanates throughout the home. Artfully placed vignettes provide glimpses into their travels and eclectic hobbies; scattered toddler toys pay homage to the real life that they live. As Jessie revealed each new aspect of the design to the Folk family, they gave her their highest possible praise: “Jessie, you just get us.” Ben works from home so the office’s functionality was just as important as its style. Visual impact comes from the geometric hide rug by Surya, and Visual Comfort’s three-arm Sommerard light fixture. Artfully displayed collectibles like Ben’s mask collection on the wall and his personal ukulele give the room an inviting eclectic personality.

DOG Great design is as much about function as it is form. Good function often requires that we give our four-legged family members as much or more consideration as all other family members combined. Nothing comes between our dogs and ourselves, but chewed-up cushions, soiled carpets, hair-covered upholstery, and odors (eek!) can make sharing space under one roof more challenging. The love of a pet doesn’t have to keep you from having a stylish and beautiful home, especially with some of the new products on the market today. Here is a list of things to consider for making a home pet friendly and stunningly designed!

Stone, laminate, concrete, and ceramic tile are by far the most durable and easiest to maintain, especially with a new puppy or an elderly pet having frequent accidents. Hardwood is also an excellent choice, but over time it may show more wear from claws. Rugs have come a long way in durability and ease of care. There are beautiful indoor/outdoor versions that can actually be hosed down outside, then brought back in looking like a high-end wool rug. Highly patterned rugs in wools and cottons or synthetic blends are much more pet friendly than natural fiber (sisal) rugs that can show every stain. Believe it or not, hand knotted Oriental rugs have a long history of coexisting with our furry friends. The patterns hide stains, and the wool can be cleaned. Carpeting comes in stain resistant, man-made fibers, but it does require immediate attention when accidents happen. A more practical option is the use of carpet tiles; they come in all styles and colors and are much easier to replace one tile at a time rather than a whole room of carpet.

After 10 years in Aiken, Fred and Dede Dohse pondered what to do with the sunroom on the back of the house close to the pool. Other than coming in handy as an overflow dining room for the grandchildren during holiday or family gatherings, the room sat unused. They even discussed demolishing it, but in the back of their minds wondered whether all that natural light in the room might be put to better purpose. After consulting with Designer Aimee Rusch, the Dohses changed their minds about demolition and are happy they did. “The updated sunroom has transformed our daily life,” commented Dede after the project was complete. The room went from being flat and monochromatic, with no life, to one enveloped in warm woven texture from the Thibaut grass cloth wallpaper and natural seagrass rug. Vibrant pops of color in fabric brought life into the space through the sunny yellow Schumacher trellis fabric window treatments and the bold Thibaut floral print on the pillows and ottoman that reflect Dede’s love of gardening. A small scale sofa from Lee Industries has a chaise that fits big comfort into a tight corner. Enveloping the room in texture with Thibaut Hakka Grass cloth wall covering brings elements of the garden inside. The addition of baskets, a seagrass rug from Design Materials and a wicker end table add immediate warmth and invite you to linger not quite outside, but almost!

AFTER The Lee Industries club chairs remained in the space and were livened up with the bold color of Ryan Studio pillows and the addition of a bright colorful ottoman covered in Thibaut fabric. Fred and Dede now find their newly refurbished sunroom so warm and inviting that they use the room every day to enjoy their morning coffee, read, and catch up with friends. “I am often surprised to find myself being ‘still’ in the sunroom and I am never still! It is a restful, calming room that makes me smile every morning,” said Dede.

F U L L D I S C L O S U R E : In the past 30 years I have personally eaten a meal

at Malia’s Restaurant in Aiken, South Carolina, a minimum of once a week, on average. I admit to bias, but my defense is that I consider myself an official foodie and through my travels have dined at some of the best restaurants in the country. I believe Aiken is fortunate to have a dining experience of Malia’s caliber.

This venerable Aiken eatery has existed and thrived for 31 years, no small task for any retail operation, but especially true in the restaurant industry. Malia Koelker opened the original Malia’s in the back of a clothing store with five tables, cooking on a portable gas double burner. She functioned as a one-woman operation – chef, waitress, and head dishwasher. A true testament to her skill and artistry as a chef is that many of her original dishes are on the menu to this day, and others are often reintroduced as specials. Malia attributes the longevity of her restaurant to change. Quoting the famous abstract artist Willem de Kooning, “I have to change to stay the same,” Malia went on to explain, “To stay relevant and fresh, yet consistently reliable, you have to be open to change.” The evolution of Malia’s from tiny lunchtime spot to fullscale dining and bar proves that she has mastered that ability while maintaining customer loyalty at an almost cultish following. Recently, in accordance with her core belief in change and evolution, Malia passed this precious mantle of creativity, integrity, and work ethic to her own stepson, Matthew Shackleton, who grew up in her restaurant. Matthew Shackleton cut his teeth in the food and beverage industry under Malia’s tutelage. After his father, Robert, married Malia, Matthew spent his high school summer breaks traveling from his home in Great Britain to the states to work as an intern with Malia. Upon graduation from culinary school at age 19, Matthew chose to join his father and Malia in the business. With Robert managing the front end of the restaurant and Malia handling the culinary experience, Matthew learned every aspect of the business. After 16 years he left to explore and develop his management skills in the corporate food service industry. Having now returned as Chef/Co-owner, Matthew has accepted the challenge of carrying on Malia’s legacy. There is no person who better understands Malia’s philosophy and her vision for the business she successfully built over a quarter century. Recently, Chef Jason Tufts, well-known culinary artist around Aiken, accepted Matthew’s invitation to join him in the restaurant. Both men share the goal of sustaining the restaurant’s longstanding reputation of excellence in fine dining that the restaurant. Although Matthew as the Chef/Owner is primarily in charge of day-to-day operations, and Jason is more often in charge of food preparation, the creativity and excellence of the menu is a joint production.

“We work side by side to develop the concepts and to find the balance of our commitment to locally sourced ingredients and sustainable proteins and offering incredible food at a reasonable price,” said Matthew. “Jason and I are so like-minded that we can each finish a dish the other has started, and it will remain true to our original concept.” Jason, classically trained in French-based cuisine from Johnson and Wales, revels in his new work environment. “When I was approached by the chef/owner of the best restaurant in Aiken to join a team that would allow me to do what I love with great staff, it felt like a career homerun,” explained Jason. “We love the creativity of combining dishes from around the world and new food technologies with the familiar flavors that our devoted customers keep coming back for. In a nutshell, the formula that Malia perfected and we continue to build upon is consistency of product and service paired with ingenuity to produce food that feels like ‘home,’” Matthew said. As for the future, Matthew stated that his future success will grow out of the integrity and work ethic he learned working alongside Malia, including her uncompromising commitment to excellence in creativity, methodology, the cleanliness of her kitchen, the quality of the food and the decorum of the staff. “Maybe this won’t sound like a cool, innovative chef thing to say, but our goal is to continue Malia’s legacy,” he said. AT L A N TA Erin Henry, Painter Erin Henry is a contemporary artist based in Atlanta, where she began working in the arts at an early age. After dropping out of art school, her cutting edge paintings have made a loud arrival into the art world since they began regularly showing at Marietta’s dk Gallery. Her unique style and curious subject matter have captured the attention of art lovers and collectors across the globe. “The goal of my art is to not only bring a unique beauty to seemingly insignificant things, but also to give a physical exhibition of my daily observations of life around me,” she states. She is fast becoming an acclaimed talent in the home furnishings industry. He gathers environmentally conscious materials and pushes them beyond their conventional uses. He enjoys working with his hands and has always been fascinated by taking things apart and putting them back together again, often with improvements. His many experiences include rebuilding antique automobiles, antique furniture restoration, cabinet making, and high-end home building and remodeling. These diverse skills come together now in a love affair with building custom furniture and cabinetry, in any style from rustic to contemporary. He loves first visualizing each piece in his head, then taking the raw materials and bringing the vision to life. Jeannie had an unexpected start to this business in the late 1980s. She was wallpapering her kitchen when she ran out of wallpaper. Rather than buy a new roll for the small spot that was left, she decided to mimic the design and paint it on the wall! What do you do when you have a young family, you love your neighborhood, school district, and your life, but the house you live in just doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work? Carrie and Joel Moss constantly debated how to address the challenge. Their neighborhood has the unique feel of a previous era; they know and love the families living near them, kids ride their bikes from house to house and play ball in the streets while parents enjoy a cocktail at dusk on the porch. Their daughter and son loved their friends and were blossoming in their classrooms at school. It is a safe and happy place to live and raise children, and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to leave.

W H AT T O D O ? B U I L D O N ? R E N O V AT E ? After much debate and several visits from contractors and architects, the Mosses realized a renovation would not create the permanent home they dreamed of. They got wind of a small vacant lot at the end of a cul-de-sac three streets away, still within their beloved neighborhood. The tucked away lot would accommodate a pool and a place for the children to play. Having grown up as the daughter of a residential contractor, Carrie knew that the challenge of a design/build process could be daunting, especially on a small pie-shaped lot. She had previously collaborated with Susan Victor, Principal Designer and owner of Nandina Home & Design, on the interiors and kitchen facelift of her current home, but she realized this new project would require a team. Susan connected Carrie and Joel with Jeffrey Burden of Truong Montgomery and Burden to create the architectural vision for the house and brought in Aimee Rusch from the Nandina Design Team to partner with her on the interiors that would define their new home. The classic kitchen with white shaker style cabinetry gets an infusion of modern update with a simple backsplash of beautifully crafted, hand finished glazed ceramic tile in a soft greige color imported from England. Oversized handrubbed antique brass pendants define the island, and naturally stained open shelving adds character to a collection of white porcelain. 32

The finished product is an heirloom home with classic architecture. The warm, inviting interiors of their new home melded perfectly with porches opening along the back of the house to a pool and the yard bounded by a wooded area â&#x20AC;&#x201C; perfect for entertaining and passing the time on long, hot summer days! Their new home has become the backdrop they dreamed of for their family to grow up in and make memories.

The master bedroom features a sophisticated fourposter bed from Hickory Chair and a muted palette of cream, taupe, and navy. An inviting corner with a custom chaise lounge from Hickory Chair and a Vanguard chest is a perfect escape for a busy mother of young children. The adjoining serene dressing room and master bath feature a custom dressing table and double vanity with marble tops and Visual Comfort sconces.

The children’s bedrooms open to a large central vestibule that functions as the perfect place to do homework or fun craft projects with a table and chairs and built-in desks that look out to the neighborhood. The space is anchored with brightly colored floor tiles that can be easily replaced if there is a mishap with paints. “Carrie wanted her children to have rooms that would be a reflection of their personality and interest but not so juvenile that they can’t make minor changes for updates as they grow into teenagers,” explained Victor. The white Lee Industries bed upholstered in an indoor/outdoor fabric, paired with Bungalow 5 chests is perfect in their young daughter’s room and fits the bill for furniture that has staying power.

The private study off the master bedroom features a Hickory Chair sofa that was from the Moss familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous home. The bookcase was custom-built to encase the sofa and provide a cozy nook for reading or watching late night TV. 38

But it is her role as designer that brings her the greatest professional fulfillment.

F U N FA C T ? I started my college career as an interior design major, but switched to physical therapy, and have come full circle. That odd combination now comes in handy with creating interiors that are not only beautiful, but functional for everyday living.

Helping her clients – aka newfound friends – achieve the home they long for is well worth the often hectic juggling required to keep up with her many responsibilities. Sue is a lover of good space planning and a well-organized home. Her own home is the haven where she and her husband Tim enjoy the simple pleasures of her excellent design sensibility – an architectural accent, a cozy nook, or the artistic use of light and art. As a new empty nester who finds joy in watching her children’s lives unfold, Sue hopes to spend more time at her mountain retreat in North Carolina and take spur-of–the-moment trips to faraway places. 40

In selecting interiors for the Shannons’ custom new-build, Sue’s goal was to layer pieces artfully that would feel as if some had been around as long as the historic neighborhood in which it was built. In the great room, it all started with a richly colored Oushak rug. Layered on the reclaimed pine floors, it provided just the “age” she was looking for to ignite the design.

Lauren and Russ Morgan appear to be an all-American couple â&#x20AC;&#x201C; young, determined, and ready to build a haven for their expanding family. With one new-build home behind them, they were ready to tackle a custom home, with attention to details that fit their lifestyle and hobbies. While meeting with their custom cabinetry builder, Frost and Keading, they became reacquainted with Nandina, specifically Principal Designer Sue Shannon, who had worked with them before on a small project for their starter home. 42

Sue’s involvement with the new-build allowed timely collaboration with the Morgans just as construction details were beginning, bringing fresh ideas to the plan that was taking shape. Russ and Lauren, great sports enthusiasts, had selected a site a stone’s throw from Champions Retreat in Evans, Georgia. One of the challenges of designing their new space was finding an appropriate place to display Russ’s extensive collection of sports memorabilia. A whitewashed knotty pine paneled study, just inside the home’s main entrance, proved to be the perfect spot to showcase his collection ranging from the Masters to the Gamecocks. When asked if they had any coasters to protect the finish of a new table, Russ produced six sets, all with varying Masters logos.

Another design issue arose from the seemingly simple idea of building shelving on each side of the great room fireplace up and around high windows. In the face of questions and doubt, Sue persevered, convincing the couple that the result would be fabulous. Be careful what you ask for! Filling those odd-sized shelves became a huge challenge. In the end, after measuring each space and accessory inch-by-inch, drawing a precise elevation, and struggling to place pieces that should have fit, but just missed, the Morgans revel in the shelving that has become a showcase for their home and their story. Lauren, Russ, and son Lucas are now expecting a new addition to the family. Nandina is honored to have been a part of creating the perfect nest for the Morgan Family. Whitewashed knotty pine paneling provides a relaxed backdrop for a photo collection of golf legends and oversized renditions of two exceptional holes at Champions Retreat. SPRING + SUMMER 2018

â&#x20AC;&#x153;In order for the remarkable eclectic folk art on each side of the fireplace to take center stage, we chose to coordinate the furniture and fabrics with subtle textures and patterns in a neutral tone and a symmetrical design to complete the living space with stylish function,â&#x20AC;? explained Nandina designer John Ishmael. When a busy young tech industry executive with a husband and two small children decided to leave her beloved Inman Park bungalow and move to a more spacious home across town, she turned to John Ishmael to help make the transition. John had designed the family’s first home in 2011, which involved a full kitchen renovation. John understood that the one nonnegotiable part of the interior design process the first time around (and also this time) was the incorporation of an extensive American Folk Art collection kept in the homeowners’ family for more than a generation. This incredible collection would follow the family into their new home and be an integral part of any interior design concept. This was not a problem for John, an accomplished artist in his own right. He was up for the challenge of marrying the whimsy of the art with the sophisticated palette and more modern aesthetic desired by the homeowners in their new location. He was tasked with designing a home where every room would be warm, inviting and casually sophisticated, yet livable, for the frequent entertaining that is an important part of their life. Every room is used to welcome friends and family. This Artfully Collected home not only showcases an outstanding collection of Americana art, but also represents the homeowners’ warm modern style and open-door lifestyle.

Aiken, South Carolina, is an equestrian mecca and it is not uncommon to see barns that outshine the main house in design and beauty. Many horse owners spend more time in their barns than they do in their homes and wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give a second thought to entertaining in a stall versus a great room. With a little ingenuity, you can create the perfect barn setting for cocktails and an intimate dinner party.

Talk about making hay â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what better way than in a barn with your closest friends? Old trophies are used for floral arrangements and bold blue is an accent in the dishware and fabrics. A candle chandelier centered over the dining table is romantic and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require permanent mounting.
