Noisy, busy cities are the place of residence for the majority of us these days while complexity is the basic characteristic of our everyday life. On the other hand, nowadays people love cities more than ever and urbanization is a phenomenon akin to most western countries. The idea of the sanctuary is not new. It has been the basic pursuit of humankind since the beginning of its existence. Human beings started their pre-urban life by transforming places of safety and isolation into their first homes. The settlements at first and later on the cities, gradually replaced the safety of the sanctuary with that of an organized structure. Thus, we decided to investigate the phenomenon of the contemporary sanctuary within the limits of the modern Dutch city. The archetype of the cave or grotto was our starting point: a linear sequence of life activities, gradually leading to the sanctuary: the sacred, personal space for joy, creation or relaxation.

The first step was to design a ribbon along which the resident’s daily activities will be hosted in certain areas which clearly lead to the personal sanctuary. In the end, a vertical curved folding was formed in order to lift the sanctuary to a higher level than the one where the rest of the activities will take place so as to achieve its maximum isolation. The house is a permanent construction and its main structural and formal elements of the house are the two parallel, solid walls that can be constructed with either concrete or bricks in a metal frame. The in between part that connects the two walls and hosts the house functions is constructed by an insulated metal frame covered with either wood planks or plaster. The wet rooms (e.g. bathroom, shower and kitchen) have a standard position in the house, while the user can define the sequence of the rest of the functions. Only one interior door, that of the lavatory, has been used in the U-home whereas the rest of the areas are not divided. On the illustrations one can see one of the many, possible suggestions:

•The bedroom is placed at the area of the sanctuary. In other cases and according to the user’s wishes, the sanctuary could be an artist’s atelier, a library or even the living room. •An amphitheater is the natural extension of the sanctuary: an area with multiple uses. In the illustrated example it is used as a bookcase and an office. Alternatively, it can also be used as a projection room. •The shower is set in the mezzanine, which also offers the best view to the rear garden. •The kitchen is placed just under the mezzanine, with direct access to the garden. •The living room combines a foldable dining table with all the necessary furniture for a comfortable living. The U-home can be built either in a row or freestanding in urban or sub-urban areas. The minimum plot dimensions are 3.6m width and 8m length. In the presentation board it is placed freestanding on a 90m2 plot with a 65m2 garden.

Sustainability matters The house has a water collection system with a 1m3 tank for gray water, which can be used for flushing or for watering the garden. The tank is incorporated into the design of the house and placed directly under the shower where most of the grey water comes from. The materials of the house are recyclable and meet the standards of small-scale housing: concrete or brick, wood or plaster with room for a layer of biodegradable insulation.

Ons hoofddoel voor dit project is het creĂŤren van een woonruimte die op een intelligente manier, zonder ruimte verspilling, getransporteerd en geplaatst kan worden. De kenmerken van deze wooneenheid doen denken aan een permanente woonruimte waar de structuur en opbouw afgeleid zijn uit de Nederlandse huisstijl. In antwoord op de vereisten, is het concept van de inklapbare beker gebruikt: 4 oppervlakken die in elkaar

overgaan en zodra ze uitgetrokken worden, vormen ze een grote waterdichte ruimte. Uit dit principe hebben we een woning ontworpen van 50 m2 die een vast omhulsel heeft en een flexibel interieur. Hierdoor kunnen verschillende gebruikers, uiteenlopend van alleenstaanden tot families worden gehuisvest. Daarnaast kan het ontwerp door zijn inklapmechanisme, gemakkelijk per vrachtwagen vervoerd worden.

Om in te spelen op de flexibiliteitsvraag, bestaat het gebouw uit twee componenten: een vaste infra+ vloer component, de accu, deze bevat alle leidingen en daar bovenop een inklapbare omhulsel. Alle bouw componenten zijn geprefabriceerd. De accu is gevestigd op de grond en het ingeklapte omhulsel wordt in zijn geheel daarop geplaatst en vergrendeld aan de accu. Vervolgens wordt het gebouw uitgeklapt, op de geĂŻntegreerde rails van de accu. Het binnen klimaat wordt door de vloerverwarming op de begane grond geregeld. De vides in de woning zorgen voor de warmte verspreiding. Het omhulsel bestaat uit vier aan elkaar verbonden componenten die over elkaar schuiven. Net zoals in het voorbeeld van de beker, zorgen de krachten die gelijkmatig verdeeld zijn tussen de twee oppervlakken, dat het gebouw waterdicht is. Het omhulsel is opgebouwd uit geĂŻsoleerde sandwich panelen. Deze panelen zijn duurzaam, kunnen gerecycled worden en zijn biologisch afbreekbaar. De binnenzijde wordt bekleed met houten platen die onderdeel kunnen zijn van de dragende isolatiesysteem of als extra toevoeging. De buitenste schil bestaat uit metalen panelen. De verdiepingsvloeren worden ter plekke ingeschoven via een railsysteem dat gevestigd is aan de binnenkant van het omhulsel. Als laatst wordt de gevel geplaatst, die vanuit eenzelfde principe is opgebouwd. Alle openingen zijn voorzien van aluminium kozijnen met dubbel glas. De wooneenheden kunnen autonoom worden geplaatst in vestigingen met een lage dichtheid of naast elkaar om een hogere dichtheid te bereiken. In het laatste geval worden de woningen afwisselend geplaatst met groene ruimtes aan beide zijden. Deze bouwmethode zou als een evolutie in de traditionele bouwtypologie van de Nederlandse stad kunnen worden beschouwd. De pastelkleuren die we gebruiken zorgen voor een vrolijke en gemoedelijke sfeer, die passen in het Nederlandse landschap.

In this project, urban agriculture is suggested as a possible way of improving the urban quality of life and home farming in the urban houses is proposed as a way of establishing smart living. This idea is implemented in a Dutch middle-class row house in a creative and sustainable way and the design is proposed for the area of Woensel- West in Eindhoven. The project is structured with a view to achieving two main intended results: Firstly, the implementation of the small and bigger scale activities of urban agriculture in the urban house with the use of new technological advances. Secondly, the provision of a better quality of life to residents of cities in two dimensions; psychologically, by the improvement of the social life of the residents, and physically, by the provision of a healthier nutrition. In this way, the urban houses will provide their residents with fresh food and encourage them to develop better interpersonal relationships at a family and communal level.

The project is based on the concept of Urban Agriculture (UA) and is outlined in three scales of design; the block, the housing unit, and the technological systems used. The block scale describes the complete design of a block in the heart of Woensel-West and its main objective is to create a communal and a public core that both contribute to its development. The housing unit is designed upon the principles of the row-housing typology and can be built

in every city in the Netherlands or abroad. Finally, the technological systems scale aims at the creative implementation of the existing Urban Agriculture systems in the design. All scales are designed in such a way that they can provide their users with a self-sufficient and sustainable production. The users take advantage of growing and eating their own fruit and vegetables, get together, and develop a community under the scope of agriculture.

All scales are equipped with a system of areas that is called “the battery� which produces and saves all the energy needed for the UA systems to work and delivers it in the way and at the time required. The mechanical systems that support the agriculture activities in all scales are placed in these areas which are interconnected in order to achieve optimal energy provision for the project.

Track: Architecture Masterproject II (6/ 2012) The aim of this Masterproject was to make a critical analysis of the Eindhoven district Woensel-West and a design for a given corner of the street. The design should contribute to the improvement of the inhabitants’ quality of life.

As the majority of Woensel- West’s inhabitants are Muslims the building program of a Turkish Hammam was chosen so to fulfill their needs and make their community stronger but at the same time give them the chance to mingle with the Dutch inhabitants. The hammam is a vital part of the islamic culture and an important element of the urban fabric of all the Islamic countries. Apart from the bathing ritual, the baths are a meeting point of the community. However, they can also be used by non-muslims that want to be initiated to the bathing ritual. The main concept of the building is the design of a “wall” to the city that could turn the user away from the urban environment. Moreover, the interconnected cold, warm, hot rooms form a route in which the user’s perception of the building changes as he moves on in it.

Track: Architecture Production and Parts (6/ 2012) The aim of the course was to design a temporary extension of 200 m2 to the model workshop in Vertigo building in TU/e based on one of the materials of the detail we analyzed in the first assignment of the course. In my case, it was the roof detail of the Thermal Baths in Vals by Peter Zumthor.

The main idea is to create one low cost, selfstanding building close to the Vertigo building which materials could be easy to store. The option of an earthbag building was chosen so as for the bags either to be emptied after one semester, or stored in packs. The building has enough storage room for the models on its two longer facades and long working tables in the middle.

A metal structure is used to carry the earthbags and the whole building is covered with polycarbonate sheets. The earthbags are used due to their high thermal mass and because they can be filled in situ. The main structure consists of two rows of I-profile columns and beams. The area between every two columns is covered with the earthbags which are of size 0.45*0.80*0.15 m.

MSc Architecture, Building & Planning. Track: Architecture Masterproject I (1/ 2012) The Masterproject aims at the revitalization of the area around the Hahnenstrasse.The final assignment contains a complete urban plan that is designed in groups and an individual proposal of particular buildings.

The main idea of the urban policy is a design of an open air passage throughout the block. As far as the individual part of the project is concerned, the residential building of Wilhem Riphan is redesigned in order to meet the urban policy requirements. The old building was characterized by the repetition on the faรงade in the same rhythm. As the inside area of the block has now been altered to a passage full of life, the back faรงade is designed as the main one. In the new design the residents have their own balconies and gardens and they can also take advantage of the common spaces of each floor. The ground and first floor of the building host shops that are redesigned with their entrances towards the interior of the block. As the building stands in the most part of the passage, the commercial use will enhance the movement of people in it.

Many shops project their windows to the passage, something that changes the monotonous straight faรงade of the ground floor. This projection is also used in some apartments on the floors above. The design principle is that every projection that hangs out of the old structure is metallic with glass in its three facades.

The area that concerns the present thesis project is centrally located in the district Gazi and lies vertically to Kerameikos square, close to the Athens’ city center in Greece. The aim of the project is to create the premises for a firm called Re_inspiration which can be defined in short as a firm specializing in recycled art. The firm in discussion assembles a large amount of “useless” articles in its warehouses. These items, which under other circumstances would end up in landfills, are of a smaller or larger size and the above firm assigns a group of designers to restructure them in order to produce artwork.

The aim of the design is to make a distinct display of the firm’s assembly line to the public. In order to achieve this aim it was necessary to make a natural extension of Kerameikos square within the boundaries of the property. The building block is erected around the garden that constitutes the public area and consists of: 1. A building for the Administration offices and the artists’ guest rooms 2. Α building that houses the café, the inventory department, the shared ateliers

department, and the artists’ private studios. A significant part of the project is concerned with the relation between the warehouses, the garden and the firm’s display area. The warehouses are located on the second floor in proportion to the garden level and the display area is located in the basement. By reversing the expected position of these areas, that is by giving prominence to the display area and concealing the warehouses, the importance of the production process is stressed with regards to its result.

For the design of this pavilion the universal theme of “the welcoming of the visitor” from ancient Greek times was selected. The design is based on the welcoming of the visitors’ ritual that Homer describes in Odyssey (A ‘, 120). In order to make a symbolic representation to this process, the pavilion has five independent sections that refer directly to the ritual’s stages.

The aim of this studio was to design a temporary pavilion within walking distance from the site with Roman ruins in Navarinou Square.

Visitors entering the first section are called to remove their shoes and place them in the central cylinder. Turning to the second part which is transparent, they play a “game” on the dividing wall. In the third translucent part, they are treated food and drink while in the drawers under the table they can find information leaflets about the site. they can rest on the glass display cases and focus on the transparent floor that houses archaeological finds from excavations in the area. The fifth section of the pavilion is located in the archaeological area, detached from the rest. In this completely transparent section they can be further informed about the excavations from the texts that are placed on the windows and thus to complete the experience of being welcomed in the site.

The project concerns the design of a village on the shores of the Lake Karla, which was desiccated in 1962 and its reconstruction was decided in 1999, to accommodate the event of the Mediterranean Games in Volos in 2013. This project became widely known as the Mediterranean village.

As the Mediterranean Village was expected to become a settlement with residents in the future, planning should incorporate both architectural and urban principles.

As far as the urban design is concerned, our main intention was to place the building blocks on a “green carpet”. Roads were ranked according to their importance and their crossroads form junctions in the urban structure. Additionally, with the future use of the settlement in mind, a provision for the location of public buildings such as schools and sports facilities was made. As far as the architectural design is concerned, the blocks are based on the way that the lake’s dykes work and they are designed in order to establish a non-conventional urban plan. The interior of the block can work either as a water reservoir or as an arable land. Furthermore, it does not have to be completed as its completion depends on the needs of the settlement for new houses.

Each block consists of several segments that obey to seven typologies and can be freely combined in order to create different units. The ground floor of each section houses shops and an inner passage while the first and second floors are given over to flats. Each section is independent and its external elevation is perpendicular to the street while the internal one creates a slope in the level of the ground floor. On their roof a ventilation chimney, which offers thorough ventilation to the unit, is placed. The blocks, which house the public facilities, follow the same construction principles. The only difference is the immersion in the land, which marks the difference in their use. 40

Grk & Zo Kitchen Bar 2015

The owners of the restaurant wanted to refublish the existing Greek restaurant “Delphi� and turn it into a modern industrial kitchen bar with a clear Greek identity. The restaurant was renamed to GRK&ZO and our team took over the new design not only of the interior but also of the logo, the menus and the visit cards of the restaurant.

The main idea was to design a place that could be used all day long and could serve coffee, lunch, dinner and drinks. Due to its rectangular shape, the restaurant was divided into three horizontal zones that would have a different character but be

used for all cases, too. The first zone, which is close to the windows, is the lounge area. Warm lights and softer fabrics are used in this zone which is also the welcome zone for the clients. The second zone is the darkest of the restaurant and hosts the big

bar, the stands and the DJ. The tables in front of the DJ are ment to be removed in case of a party. The third zone is lightened up by the two skylights, hosts the main restaurant hall and is placed exactly next to the open kitchen.

The decoration of the Kitchen Bar is inspired by the old industrial Greek elements that are reintroduced to the Dutch audience.

The Yiamas restaurant is a new modern place to taste Greek delicacies in the new area of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. The basic aim of the design was to transform the cold interior of the shop in the ground floor of a newly built block into a warm place that the clients could feel like being in Greece. Simple gestures and new materials that refer to Greece made this possible to happen. The interior of the restaurant was designed from scratch as well as its logo and menu.

Το ξύλο είναι ένα οικολογικό υλικό που συνδυάζει πολυτέλεια και αισθητική εδώ και αιώνες. Στην Serwood, πιστοί σ’ αυτή τη παράδοση από το 1970, επεξεργαζόμαστε το ξύλο με γνώση και μεράκι, δημιουργώντας στέγες που αποτελούν εικαστική παρέμβαση και αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του διακόσμου της κατασκευής.

Lagonisi . Στη σκιά της πέργκολας deck δίπλα από τη θάλασσα οι ενδυαιτημόνες απολαμβάνουν μια αρμονική σύζευξη του εξωτικού, γαστρονομικού στοιχείου με το ελληνικό, παραδοσιακό, διακοσμητικό στοιχείο.

Έπαυλη στην Κηφισιά Πολυτελής έπαυλη, αληθινό στολίδι, έτσι όπως αναδύεται μέσα από τα τυρκουάζ νερά της πισίνας και το σμαραγδένιο πράσινο του κήπου, με φόντο τον καθάριο, ελληνικό ουρανό. Οι τετράριχτες στέγες και οι περιμετρικές στεγασμένες βεράντες από δρυς, τα περιφερειακά της πισίνας decks καθώς και οι σκάλες από ξύλο τικ με το ζεστό χρώμα τους και τη ραφινάτη όψη τους συμβάλλουν στην ανάδειξη αυτής της πολυτέλειας ιδιαίτερα τη νύχτα όταν φωτίζονται και αντανακλώνται στα νερά της πισίνας.


INDEPENDENT CLIENT Corporate competition 2013

The poster was designed for a competition held in one of the bigest companies in the world. The competition required a A0 poster that should express the concept of the project in a comprehensive way. Our challenge was to design the workflow of weaving classified information within images for confidentiality purposes. The delivered poster depicts the encryption and descryption process in a simplistic fashion and highlights the possible applications following the coloring scheme of the company’s design team.
