WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

INTRODUCTION The NHS Long-Term Plan promises a digital revolution when it comes to patient care and the tools NHS professionals have at their disposal. We want to introduce you to our new initiative, #HelloFuture, which translates this into truly leading-edge NHS corporate services. We have worked closely with a number of you to pioneer brand-new products and services – innovative ways of working and digital solutions that address the day-to-day challenges facing the NHS. And, in the months ahead, we will continue to design and test new innovations that meet your specific needs.

#HelloFuture is about designing, developing and delivering efficient and effective back and middle office services that benefit every NHS organisation in the country, now and in the future. Our goal is to help you meet targets, improve performance, strengthen your financial position and free up staff for more valuable activity. And the reward is potentially huge. By working together to ensure that business services are aligned to the Health Secretary’s vision for a future, technology-enabled NHS, you will save more time and money than ever before – hours and pounds that are far better spent on patient care.

THE CHALLENGES LAID DOWN IN THE LONG-TERM PLAN Providers and commissioners must deliver savings of over £700 million via administrative efficiencies by 2023/24. Recruiting and retaining staff, and reducing bank and agency costs are key areas of focus. Staff productivity is a priority, so time wasted on irritating tasks must be eliminated to increase the focus on patient care. Providers are expected to make greater procurement savings by getting the best deals. CCGs must accelerate the roll out of Personal Health Budgets (PHBs) to give people greater choice and control over how their care is planned and delivered.

We’re working alongside 100% of CCGs, nearly 40% of provider organisations, and several arm’s length bodies and other organisations, to help them respond to these challenges.

OUR CORE SERVICES We already deliver a minimum 20% cost saving on our main finance and accounting, procurement and employment services offers compared with in-house management. And – as part of #HelloFuture – we are designing and developing innovative digital technologies and piloting brand new ways of working, which further improve efficiency and quality, save more time and money than ever before, and better support the NHS workforce to deliver world-class patient care.

Our business services play an important role in supporting our clinicians to deliver world-class patient care... With NHS SBS we’ve seen a leap in the maturity of our systems in a very short space of time.” Roy Clarke, Director of Finance Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

…NHS SBS has transformed financial management in our organisation. Systems are more sophisticated yet… easier to use: efficiency and effectiveness are simply in-built. It’s been a real revelation.” Annette Clough, Financial Controller Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust

MySBSPay A free app, developed in partnership with leading NHS organisations including Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, giving staff access to their payslips and other pay-related information on mobile devices at any time, day or night.

Delivered a 26% reduction in queries to the payroll desk – equivalent to 48 working days saved each month across the organisations using our payroll service.

…MySBSPay is much easier than having to log on to ESR... The ability to ask questions on the app will also mean NHS staff spend less time on phone calls and emails to Payroll.” Cathy Hill, Assistant Director of Nursing Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Exit Interviews A service developed alongside Solent NHS Trust to help NHS organisations better understand why staff leave, and provide invaluable data to inform workforce priorities. When the pilot uncovered issues in specific areas, the Trust was able to take positive action and increase employee retention. The NHS SBS independent exit interview process has enabled us to provide board level assurance that we are doing the right things. The invaluable narrative has given us new, important insights but also validated much of what we already knew and the steps already taken. Ceri Connor, Associate Director of People and OD Solent NHS Trust

Weekly Payroll One of the reasons NHS staff choose to work for agencies is swift payment. Our Weekly Payroll solution has helped providers like Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals Foundation Trust incentivise its employees to join the hospital’s bank, instead of working through an agency.

The number of bank hours work carried out by registered nurses almost doubled over 18 months - at the same time that agency hours reduced.

The Trust’s total spend on agency staff more than halved in the last financial year.

Digital Cashier A pioneering, integrated payment system, piloted by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, which makes it easy for NHS organisations to collect more of the money they are owed and provides NHS finance teams with better oversight and control. Enables NHS organisations to take card payments in person, online or over the phone – all integrated with their finance platform for improved accuracy, accounting and reporting.

Gives customers, such as overseas and private patients, greater flexibility in how and when they pay - helping hospitals recover more debt.

…this is about making it much easier for somebody to make a payment… this technology will lead to a huge increase in the amount of money that is recovered across the whole NHS in future.” Huw Rees, Financial Controller University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

PHBChoices A secure, online platform, already used by 12 CCGs, for the administration and management of Personal Health Budgets (PHBs); where individuals – or their Proxy – can purchase products and services in line with a care plan agreed with their CCG. Individuals benefit from the control afforded by a PHB but without the burden of administration.

CCGs can meet NHSE targets, while having better visibility, transparency and control than possible when using a direct payment bank account.

Three NHS commissioners in NW London – Hammersmith & Fulham, West London and Central London CCGs – worked together as early adopters:

PHBChoices has given us complete visibility of what is actually being provided to all of our PHB holders. It means we have central oversight of the care hours being used, against the care hours provided for a person’s assessed needs. The whole reason for providing PHBs is to give people greater freedom and the ability to make decisions about their own care. So it’s really pleasing to hear many PHB holders now saying that PHBChoices is giving them that greater control.”
