CAPTURE LOVE IN LOUDOUN Virginia is for Lovers® and destinations around the state want to remind travelers of this message in a new BIG way. Over the past year giant LOVE artwork has been popping up around the commonwealth, reminding visitors that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation. Loudoun is proud to be one of several sites across the state to build a unique, themed LOVEwork. And of course, since we’re DC’s Wine Country®, the Loudoun LOVEwork has a wine
country theme. Each letter represents different elements of Loudoun’s wine country and includes wine and beer labels, corks from all of Loudoun’s wineries, local artistry, and the DC’s Wine Country® brand. The installation in Purcellville sits outside the Historic Purcellville Train Station at the end of the Washington & Old Dominion
Railroad Regional Park trail and next to Magnolias at the Mill Restaurant (one of Loudoun’s Destination Restaurants). Visitors are encouraged to take a picture with the LOVEwork and share it on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtags #LoveVA and #DCsWineCountry.
Visit and Win Want to be rewarded for visiting DC’s Wine Country®? Visit any Loudoun winery, take a picture, and post it to our Facebook page (Facebook.com/VisitLoudoun) or to Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram with the hashtag #DCsWineCountry. Each month, we’ll pick one winner to receive a snazzy, snarky DC’s Wine Country® t-shirt. Each monthly winner will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for tickets to Epicurience Virginia (see ad on page 17).

n o i t c u d o r int The culinary story of Loudoun includes a thriving wine industry, an emerging craft brewery scene, and foods from farms that have been producing for generations. This publication will guide you and your palate along a scenic, tasty, and historic journey of Loudoun’s epicurean experiences. Loudoun is DC’s Wine Country®. Only 25 miles from Washington, DC, Loudoun has matured into a true culinary destination. To make your experience as effortless as possible, we have grouped Loudoun’s wineries and tasting rooms into six driving “clusters”. Each drive is an experience in itself, along winding roads and up mountainsides, past horse farms and historic estates, and beside miles of stacked stone fences. Focus on one cluster or visit several clusters to fully experience DC’s Wine Country®. We suggest you enhance your visit by spending the night and split each trip into two or more days. Our accommodations can be found on our website, VisitLoudoun.org. Let this guide direct you to the perfect culinary stop to complement your tour – a stop at a local farmer’s market for the season’s freshest produce, a visit to a brewery or distillery to liven up your palate, or a meal at one of Loudoun’s Destination Restaurants. You’ll quickly discover your musttaste list requires repeat visits.

The wineries in this cluster lie just outside the historic village of Waterford, which was founded by Quakers in 1733. Today the village is a National Historic Landmark, the highest honorary designation bestowed by the US Department of the Interior, because of the residents who have diligently preserved not only the settlement’s historic structures, but the surrounding open land as well. It is well worth a stroll through the narrow streets to see this unique place that is untouched by modern living.

A WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL TWO HUNDRED YEARS IN THE MAKING August 30th - September 2nd © 2012 Robb Sharetg/sharetgpictures.com. All Rights Reserved.
Picture a food and wine festival so unique that no existing name quite fit. A food and wine experience so epic, in fact, that we’re calling it something completely new: Epicurience. Held in the East Coast’s premier wine region, Loudoun, Virginia: DC’s Wine Country ®. It’s where insiders come to savor award-winning wines and seek out noteworthy farm-to-table cuisine. Taste the finest in Virginia wines, meet top tastemakers and master winemakers, sample cuisine prepared by celebrated chefs from around the country including celebrated DC chef Todd Gray.
The wineries in this cluster are tucked into the fertile land between Route 15 and the Potomac River, the Northeastern section of Loudoun. ] Tasting Room at Hidden Brook Winery
To explore the Potomac Cluster, take historic Route 15 north from the county seat of Leesburg. This road
the potomac
cluster
is a scenic two-lane highway, lined with farms and houses, rolling fields, and mountain views. It was once an American Indian trail, known as the Great Warrior’s Path, and was favored by Algonquin and Iroquois because of its springs and milder weather east of the mountains. It was also a main thoroughfare and trading route during Colonial times, and was named the Carolina Road for an Indian trading post on its southern end on the Virginia-Carolina border. Today it is named the James Monroe Highway, after the nation’s fifth president, who lived on Route 15 just south of Leesburg.

“gray ghost”
A NICKNAME EARNED BY JOHN SINGLETON MOSBY FOR HIS CLANDESTINE OPERATIONS AND HIS ABILITY TO AVOID CAPTURE DURING THE CIVIL WAR.
24 | The Mosby Cluster
The road and this cluster were named for the infamous Civil War partisan, John Singleton Mosby, a Confederate cavalryman whose band of rangers roamed the area throughout the war. His clandestine operations and ability to avoid capture earned him the nickname “The Gray Ghost”. Today Route 50 stretches from the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific. While you’re driving this historic road from one winery to the next, look beyond the historic stone-stacked fences and you’ll find what makes Loudoun horse country in addition to wine country – historic homes, scenic horse farms, and vistas of rolling fields.

Located in the upper northwest part of Loudoun, Hillsboro is appropriately named for its hills, and the wineries in this cluster have some of the most stunning scenery in the county.

Entering Loudoun from the west on Route 7, you’ll pass through Snickers Gap, a wind gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains and historically a major thoroughfare between the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley. From here you can explore the village of Bluemont (originally named Snickersville) and the towns of Round Hill and Purcellville. Historic winding roads such as Snickersville Turnpike lead you through the scenic countryside with views of the Blue Ridge often rolling along beside you. Climb the mountains to one of the cluster’s wineries, Bluemont Vineyard, boasting perhaps the most breathtaking views in the county from an elevation of nearly 1,000 feet.

Loudoun County cuisine isn’t just about the food – it is also the unique experiences. Our diverse mix of culinary delights is as eclectic as the restaurants that serve them. Where else can you indulge in a plate of fried green tomatoes in a turn-of-the-century bank, or enjoy white cheddar stone-ground grits in an authentic 1905 mill? If that’s not distinctive enough for you, satisfy your taste buds with food straight from the farm to your table, within a glass conservatory overlooking the Potomac River. Your options are only limited by the size of your appetite.

The Wine Cellar houses the restaurant’s 250 label wine list, including several labels from Loudoun and other regions in Virginia. Working their vast farmland, Goodstone grows most of the
herbs and vegetables on the menu, has a chicken and egg production, sheep, and plans for cattle. Executive Chef Ian Dieter brings French influences to the menu which is prepared in a Modern American/ French Country style. Soufflés are standard on the menu and traditional dishes like sweetbreads and frog legs often make an appearance on the evening’s specials. After your meal, step outside and take in the views and the peacefulness that abounds. You’ll feel the sense of awe and pride that Goodstone has honed to best honor this land and share it with us in the most elegant and delicious way. D e s t i n at i o n R e s ta u r a n t s |

This sprawling, rustic tavern features four bars and numerous dining rooms. In the 1980s the Clyde’s Restaurant Group purchased several antique heavy timber buildings destined for demolition and over 20 years later these barns, stables, homes, and taverns were reassembled to create the complex of dining rooms for CLYDE’S WILLOW CREEK FARM. There’s the Audubon Bar complete with original Audubon prints, the vast slate terrace featuring a large fountain and arbor,
and the Chandler Barn decorated with a variety of weather vanes. The dining rooms feature original artwork, historic artifacts, and a collection of museum quality 18th century horse-drawn carriages – many strung from the high ceilings. True to its name, Clyde’s is located on a working farm where their team of chefs draws inspiration for the classic tavern menu. With a vast selection of customer pleasing dishes and a variety of dining experiences to explore, the question of where to sit just got easier – come back for multiple visits and discover your favorite seat!

MARKET SALAMANDER 200 W Washington St, Middleburg VA 20117 p: 540.687.8011 w: MarketSalamander.com Described as a “working chef’s market,” MARKET SALAMANDER offers much more than your typical market. To begin your experience, enter through the double barn doors into the enclosed Café Courtyard. Designed to be reminiscent of village markets seen in the Italian Piedmont, the courtyard features an interior facade of a country home, complemented by a bright blue sky painted onto the high ceilings, cobblestone floors, and outdoor patio furniture. Here guests can enjoy food purchased from the kitchen, relax with a coffee or glass of wine, or browse the market’s selection of gourmet goods. In the open kitchen, enticing aromas and glass
cases filled with beautifully displayed food tempt your senses. The menu features soups, salads, sandwiches, entrées, and more prepared by a team of resident chefs lead by Culinary Director Todd Gray and Chef de Cuisine Vaughn Skaggs. While browsing the display cases take note of the impressive creations from Pastry Chef Jason Reaves (winner of Food Network Challenge “LEGO” cake competition). From this talented team of culinary stars, you can enjoy the perfect picnic for tailgating at the races or touring the wineries, a large catered event, or a quick lunch while shopping Middleburg’s unique boutiques and shops.

Lightfoot’s dining experience is described as casual elegance, offering a comfortable atmosphere where walk-ins are welcome, whether you’re dressed in jeans, business casual attire, or black tie. Enlarged canvas images of the restaurant’s dishes grace the walls, enticing your appetite for the meal to come. Aesthetics aside, it’s the unique mix of Korean and Cajun cuisine at Mokomandy that fills their seats. This isn’t fusion but two very different cuisines harmonizing side by side on the menu. “Modern Korean by Mandy” is the source of the Mokomandy name, honoring the mother of owner Thaddeus Kim. The
child of a Cajun mother and a Korean father, Kim’s mother prepared both cuisines for the family. With Kim’s influence, Executive Chef Daniel Wilcox Stevens creates delightful interpretations of Korean and Cajun dishes and brings the influence of these cuisines to a variety of classic foods. Jambalaya, Bulgogi Beef, Poutine, Deviled Eggs, and Steak Frites all make appearances on the eclectic menu. Judging by the numerous awards and accolades Mokomandy has received since its opening, the marriage seems to work out just as well on the plate as it did for Thaddeus Kim’s parents.
