REVISTING INDUSTRIAL GERITAGE: VOLUME 2 EL DORADO OF THE EAST - means The Golden One or The Lost City of Gold; A title given to the small town of Sungai Lembing, Pahang for its significant economical contribution when it became the epicentre for tin mining in the 1900s under a British company - Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL) who had a 120- year lease to mine the area. After facing an economic downturn due to the crash of global tin prices in the 1980s - which forces PCCL to cease operations in 1986 has transformed Sungai Lembing into an abandoned ghost town.

TASK 01. CONCEPTUAL: LITERATURE REVIEW ILLUSTRATION (THEMATIC DRAWING) THE RESERRUCTION

CASE STUDY ( BERNARD TSCHUMI’S MANHATTAN TRANSCRIPT)

Bernard work of Manhattan transcript is a evolution of spaces from a motion or action. The story of the manhattan transcript tells about a story of a murder cases. He would then take every action of movement that occur from site to site to create his own interpertation of spaces. Different part of story, has been developed into varios ways to create different space element. Bernard Tschumi has created 4 different types catogarized as M1 until M4. The refrence below show the 4th catogary, where a row of movement is merged with pictures of action and the building. From the movement, 3d spaces are then created depending on the type of movement. All the 3d space are then collaged together to create a big and continous space. The MT4 has few blocks that can be separated and differentiated with themes. Where there reality, photography and the cinema.

TASK 01. CONCEPTUAL: LITERATURE REVIEW ILLUSTRATION (THEMATIC DRAWING) THE RESERRUCTION

TABULATION OF sG.lEMBING ELEMENT AND SCENES

Sungai Lembing evolved around tin mines and the activites done corresponding to it. The main part of the tine story are the tin miners, of how the tin minerals are excavated on site and also the atmosphere within the tunnel mine that the miners experience. The second important part of Sungai Lembing tin mine are the locomotive. The main transportation system to transport the minerals and also as transportation system for public users. The final piece of the Sungai Lembing mine are the factory, where all the minerals excavated are processed and transported away the Sungai Lembing.

TASK 01. CONCEPTUAL: LITERATURE REVIEW ILLUSTRATION (THEMATIC DRAWING) THE RESERRUCTION

FINAL COLLAGE

DISSECTION

This spaces explores the importance of locomotive during the PCCL era. The top image showing the movement of human at the train stop located near the chinese school. The red block, shows the journey of the locomtive when its is not in mine tunnel nor the mining factory. On the end side of the block represents the tunnel mine.

This image shows the end of the locomotive journey from the tunnel to the mining factory. In certain cases the trailers are pushed manually by the human to transport it.

The near side represents the Mining factory.

It is brought to a shelter stop where it is then minerals are kept before moving it into the factory.

While the circular shaped shows the movement of human during the construction of the train track.

The collecters on side of the shelter represents the minerals that has pass through the shelter. The stepped shape shows the various stages in the mine factory to produce the tin mineral.

The shows the construction of the trian track. This image shows the early beginnings of tin mineral production. The left image shows the hectic work that is happening in Sg. Lembing during the PCCL era. The center block shows the journey of tunnel train to transport the tin mines excavated in the tunnel. The train connects directly to the shaft. The right image shows the joints and movement of miners excating the tin minerals. The wall represents the tunnel wall thats is excated upon.

Movement of people represented in the column form. While the movement are shown as the block that goes in between those columns. While the brown blocks shows the surrounding context, while showing it harh enviroemts.

This image show the process thats happens on mining factory. The top image shows the grinder and the conveyor belt, the images shows as rotating door with wall going along the few grinders. The bottom image shows “Mendulang” . The center block rotatable to represent the circular motion of “Mendulang” process.

TASK 02. CONCEPTUAL: PROTOTYPE MODAL

DISSECTION The second modal shows specifically about the train and locomotive journey to the mine factory and away from Sg.Lembing. The 3 standing wall with 3 openings shows the 3 process or stages where the tin are processed. While the 4 concrete block shows the views are blocked, where it shows the uncertainity of train when it goes away from the town.

The first part of the modal shows the experience of mine train journey from the mine tunnel until the mine factory. The side walls represents the texture of mine tunnel while the single standing wall are the movement of miners thats creates, maze like spaces. While the wooden tower represents the shaft that goes deep into the base of tin mine.

The final part of the modal shows the process within the mine factory where its passes through 2 of the 3 process. The first process is the mendulang process, where 3 wings of walls with opening that rotates in places showing the process of mendulang. The 2nd part is the grinder stage where a rotating walls would rotate on place allowing 1 passage per time.

TASK 03.1. site planning

The ground floor spaces are used for smaller activites thats would not harm the heritage structure.

Access to first floor are by the mine tunnel. Train will then transport the tourists into the site.

Access to the ground floor are located at the front. As they walk along the walkway, it will peak their intersts.

Most of the resting spaces and area overlooks the Bukit Panaroma on the back-drop The ground floor spaces has a back-drop of Bukit Panorama.. Ground floor spaces are open to public. The ground floor spaces, provides as preview to peak interest for visitors.

The community could also garden and sell it in their markets on site. As the Sg.Lembing market is further away frm the site.

TASK 04.PRAGMATIC. SCHEMATIC BUILDING MODAL

The backdrop created a vast spaces on the upper floor to create the proposed spaces. Where connection between community and tourists are brought closed together with interelated activities between them. While space and remnants below are can be used as public display area where bigger NGO and even goverment and private based plans can be carried out. Further putting the Sg.Lembing back into the map.

This early massing modal explores the possibilties of creating an replication of tine mine experience from the mine tunnel until the process of “mendulang” and even to experience the train journey. The site located near a hill side and has a backdrop of vegetation and also the mine tunnel entrnace. Where early proposal of train was proposed to connect my proposed building with mine tunnel.

POTENTIAL AMBASSADOR

STATE OF SG.LEMBING MUSUEM

Mr. Badrul could be a potential representative or ambassador to the proposed building. He has has made various contribution while showing high value of appreciation towards the preservations of Sg. Lembing history. Bieng multi talented and also having high range of contact with the higher officials, he could easily manage and upgrade the proposal and surrouding context.

The current musuem of Sg. Lembing has only graphical notes with very less interactive spaces. There do have however all the artifacts of miners and PCCL era. Many of the spaces doesnt not really provid the audience with the feeling and experience needed to capture the elements. Part of the proposal, the Interactice musuem can be the second part of the Sg. Lembing musuem.

He is also knowledgeable towards the history of Sg.Lembing is good in arts and has done various social services not just limitng to Sg.Lembing. Thus he could also give out workshop to the locals and toursits while creating jobs and attraction point.

Where in the existing musuem its only provides with viewing experience while the new proposed building has more physical senses. Along this, this both part of the museum creates a story line. The spaces are connected by a proposed train track that goes along this 2 points. While also stopping by the tunnel mine in between the 2 points.
