Our Hypnosis practice encompasses traditional services, plus: ◆ Past Age, Life and Between Lives Counseling ◆ Akashic Record Travel Resolving Physical and Emotional Issues Arthur Gutkin dreamt four years ago that he would awake as a Traveler of the Akashic Record and a Healer. During meditation, Art travels the Akashic Record and experiences memories of his clients, from Past Ages, Lives, the Womb, and the formative years. These memories, many repressed, often unlock the causes of long term illnesses, both physical and emotional. Art’s unique form of hypnosis,“Integrated Regression Healing,” helps adults overcome those debilitating memories. Additionally, Art lays hands on people who have suffered pain for years, who then, within minutes, feel relief and greater range of motion.
Art has successfully Laid Hands on People with... ◆ Cancer ◆ Multiple Sclerosis ◆ Muscular Dystrophy ◆ Depression ◆ Chronic Pain ◆ Arthritis ◆ Paralysis ◆ Intestinal Issues ◆ Many Other Diseases Art, personally trained by a world renowned Past Life Hypnotherapist, specializes in Past Life, Age, Womb and Between Lives Therapy. Art’s clients meet Guides and Judges after learning life lessons while traveling their Past Lives and Between Lives. Art, when needed during Womb, Past Life, and Between Life Travels, combines Hands-on Healing with his unique Regression Therapy releasing physical and emotional issues associated with earlier negative Karma. “Distance Healing from Art was extremely beneficial to me. The MS symptoms of fatigue and muscle pain/cramping I had were greatly diminished. This after just the first session! The postural orthostatic tachycardia condition I had was made better and almost completely eliminated after just 3 sessions. I found my cognitive function to be better as well and even a sensitivity to magnesium stearate was basically eliminated. I very much recommend this form of healing energy from Art to anyone looking for a good ‘boost’ and relief from various symptoms.” -Jeanette Raynor, Rhode Island “15 years ago I had a car accident and was never pain free until Art laid hands on my back for less than five minutes. On his way out of my house, he saw my dog, Buster, who was dying from brain disease. He laid hands on Buster. Within a day, Buster was acting like a puppy.” - Ray Adkins, Pottstown, PA

32 TROUBLED WATERS by Linda Sechrist
32
letterfrompublisher Our earth is two-thirds water, and water is a crucial
part of our being—physically and spiritually. Yet water has become a critical, politically complex issue with environmental, social and economic ramifications. As I write this, it’s nearly World Water Day, March 22, an internationally observed day of education and activism about water. The struggle for humanity’s right to clean and accessible water isn’t just a global issue: it’s happening right here in Pennsylvania. Linda Sechrist’s article in this issue, “Troubled Waters,” discusses a landmark Karen G. Meshkov legal case that affirms Pennsylvanians’ right to pure and son, Asa water, clean air and a healthy environment, and gives them the ability to defend that right against fracking and other environmental violations. The right to water is especially important given the situation in Flint, Michigan, where thousands of residents’ water supply was recently poisoned by old lead pipes. The lead-contaminated water has been linked to a number of illnesses in the people who were forced to bathe and drink in it. The damage will be lasting—all the more reason for us to deepen our quest for sustainability in all parts of life. That quest manifests in the choices we make about what and where we eat; how we work and rest; our relationships with ourselves, our friends, family and foes; how we choose to interact with nature and our own gardens, lawns, homes and workspaces; and in the ways we spend our precious time. We honor our lives and the lives of all other living things when we set the intention to respect, maintain and preserve. As I celebrate my one-year anniversary as publisher, I continue to learn and grow, and I’m glad you are all with me for this critical education. May the waters of life nourish and sustain us on our journey.

T
he Richboro Heal Your Heart from Loss organization will provide two forums in April to facilitate healing conversations among those suffering from the loss of a loved one. The forums will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 6 and April 20, at the Free Library of Northampton Township, in Richboro. Organizer Donna Glatz’s husband, Bill Glatz, was tragically murdered during an attempted armed robbery of the family’s jewelry store on Rising Sun Avenue in 2010. Through the grieving process that followed his passing, Glatz discovered that her beloved was still with her in many ways, and through that connection, she found the power to heal herself and others. “I want to provide a safe space to tell my story, and for me to hear others’ stories. This is that space, and I look forward to meeting those who plan to attend,” shares Glatz. Location: 25 Upper Holland Rd., Richboro. Free Library of Northampton Township provides location, but not sponsorship, of this event. For more information, email healyourheart8@gmail.com. Dates and times will be posted in the Natural Awakenings calendar each month.

ifeAligned Upper Cervical Treatment Center, a new center specializing in gentle, precise head realignment, will host a series of free events this month. Readers are invited to a movie night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on April 5, where they can meet LifeAligned founder Dr. Andrew Persky, DC, enjoy healthy snacks, learn more about upper cervical treatments and tour the facility. An open house will Dr. Andrew Persky be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 17, where attendees can register to win a free examination and imaging study. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on April 26, “An Evening with Dr. Persky” will offer interesting exploration of current health issues. LifeAligned treatment is a highly specialized, nonsurgical, gentle and safe procedure designed to realign the cranio-cervical junction and upper cervical spine where the base of the skull and brain connect to the rest of the body. Published research and advanced imaging have provided new insight into how misalignment of the head can cause troubling health issues in certain individuals. “Upper cervical treatment is one of the best kept secrets in healthcare,” says Persky, noting that the treatment is significantly different from standard chiropractic. The tide is turning, however, and former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon (with dementia) and talk show host Montel Williams (with multiple sclerosis) have both endorsed the treatment, citing profound improvement in the quality of their lives. Persky, who trained in Georgia, is grateful for the opportunity to bring his work to the Philadelphia area. “This is exciting, state-of-the-art medicine, and most importantly it has the power to heal people for whom relief has been inaccessible. I’m looking forward to both meeting and serving the community here.” Location: 1432 Easton Rd., Ste. 4A, Warrington. eventbriefs ‘Embracing the Deep Mystery of Wholeness’ Event Series by Dr. Susan Burger, Featuring Body Psychologist Philip Shepherd
D
r. Susan Burger and The Moonbeam Initiative will present Embracing the Deep Mystery of Wholeness, a series of thoughtprovoking events focused on what keeps us feeling separate from each other, and how to break through into a new paradigm of living. The series will culminate in a weekend workshop featuring special guests, classes, presentations, music and Philip Shepherd meditation on June 25 and 26 at the James Lorah Auditorium, in Doylestown. “We use terms like oneness, wholeness, and divine intelligence and say ‘we are all connected’,” says Burger, founder and director of Dr. Susan Burger’s Vitality Center, a multi-practitioner wellness center in Morrisville. “But what do we really mean, and how do we live and embody this truth? Are these just metaphysical terms or are they backed
by science?” she asks, adding, “This journey is not for those who are comfortable with the status quo.” The series will kick off this month with Friday night movie screenings at the Dr. Susan Burger Vitality Center. Black Whole will be shown at 7 p.m. on April 8, and a double feature, Animate Earth and Plants Behaving Badly will be shown at 7 and 9:30 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22. Featured guests at the June 25 and 26 weekend conference will include acclaimed body psychologist Philip Shepherd, author of New Self, New World: Recovering Our Senses in the Twenty-First Century, presenting one of his signature workshops, Radical Wholeness. Also presenting will be Charles Gilchrist, mandala and sacred geometry artist, and Gabriel Cavazos, a bio-environmental designer, along with Dr. Burger and others. Massage therapists can qualify for six CE credits with Philip Shepherd. A mandala workbook will be provided with Charles Gilchrist. Location: Friday night movies and events are held at Dr. Susan Burger’s Vitality Center, 300 W. Trenton Ave., Ste. 200, Morrisville. Introducing Two Programs in Time for Earth Day at Greenshire Arts
A
s spring nudges the Earth into awakening, Greenshire Arts Consortium is developing two new groups designed to allow adults and families to experience the Earth as a conduit for inspiration, creativity and deeper connection to self. Interested readers are invited to contact Greenshire Arts. Rediscovering Your Passion is an immersion group for adults. Using a ladder metaphor, the group will explore seven rungs of a ladder that rests in the soil at the root of each person’s tree of life. The seven rungs represent seven creative catalysts: Earth, body, altar, elements, archetypal, spirit and divine. Time will be spent both indoors and outdoors. Families are invited to join Playing Mindfully with Earth. In this series, families will take special care of a garden plot, flowers or veggies, watching the Earth unfold through all of its seasons. Participants will bring together passions for discovery, storytelling, gardening and sharing meals. Arlene Curley, Greenshire Arts director, enthuses, “Greenshire has a magic that will help you bring form to your inner visions. Whether you’re a dreamer, artist, parent, gardener, writer or kid—there is a space for you.” Location: 3620 Sterner Mill Rd., Quakertown. For more information, contact Kristin Moyer, of Conscious Connections, or Arlene Curley at 215-538-0976, email Info@Greenshire Arts.org or visit GreenshireArts.org. See listings, page 37.

eventbriefs Bucks County Health Coach Gina Forgione Opens Two New Office Locations
I
n Balance Health Coaches announces its grand opening of two office locations in Langhorne and Doylestown. In Balance’s founder and director, Gina Forgione, is a certified health and wellness coach, certified nutritionist and graduate of the renowned Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), in New York City, as well as a member of the International Association of Health Coaches. Forgione was in the medical field for 17 years before pursuing her passion for functional, integrative wellness. Gina Forgione Forgione’s philosophy of nutrition focuses on a person’s unique “primary plate”—the relationship between food, stress, career, relationships, exercise and spirituality. “If things aren’t organized on that plate, the diet will never succeed,” she explains, adding, “Bioindividuality is also a factor.” In addition to assisting with weight loss, Forgione helps people with diabetes, kidney and renal conditions, lymphatic issues and candida, among others. “It’s a nice, gentle way of making lifestyle change,” says Forgione of her three-, six- and nine-month programs. “We gradually introduce clean-eating food choices that will crowd out poorer food choices. We are careful not to spook people with too much change too fast.” She also offers elimination diets for people experiencing high levels of inflammation. To celebrate the grand opening, clients who sign up before April 30 will receive $100 off of the core program fee. Locations: Wood Lane Professional Centre, 1262 Wood Ln., Ste. 206, Langhorne, and Park Terrace, 275 Main St., Ste. 10, Doylestown. Life’s Path Offers Regression-Based Hypnotherapy in Quakertown
L
ife’s Path Hypnotherapy, a Quakertownbased practice, is now providing regression hypnotherapy sessions. An introduction to the work will be presented at a workshop, Past Life Regression: Glimpse Into Your Past, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 8 at Greenshire Arts Consortium. In regression hypnotherapy, subjects enter a very natural, deeply relaxed state. By connecting to the subconscious part of their minds, clients recall memories from their past that they might otherwise not be able to remember. A Life’s Path practitioner shares, “In their everyday, hectic lives, when most of their daily tasks involve conscious analyzing and reasoning, most people cannot access the triggering events or incidents that may be impacting their life. This work allows us to touch into those underlying experiences and understand the hidden influences the subconscious may be holding.” She adds, “When we can connect with our knowledgeable subconscious and learn about these energetic imprints, it enables us to heal and to experience life in a new way.” Location: Greenshire Arts Consortium is located at 3620 Sterner Mill Road in Quakertown. TAI CHI EASES EFFECTS OF CHRONIC DISEASE
Kiwis Boost Heart Health
A
multi-center study from the University of Salamanca, in Spain, has found that consuming even one kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) per week will significantly boost cardiovascular health. The researchers tested 1,469 healthy people throughout Spain. The volunteers were given dietary questionnaires and underwent testing for cholesterol lipids and inflammatory markers for heart disease. The researchers determined that those that ate at least one kiwi fruit per week had significantly lower triglycerides and fibrinogen (a marker for inflammation), and higher HDL-cholesterol levels. Higher levels of HDL-cholesterol are associated with reduced incidence of atherosclerosis. The researchers concluded: “Consumption of at least one kiwi a week is associated with lower plasma concentrations of fibrinogen and improved plasma lipid profile in the context of a normal diet and regular exercise.”

esearchers from the University of Melbourne determined that taking a quick break and looking at natural colors can significantly increase attention, focus and job performance. The researchers tested 150 university students that were randomly selected to view one of two city scenes consisting of a building with and without a flowering meadow green roof. The two views were experienced as micro-breaks, a 30-second period that can be taken every 40 minutes. Both groups were tested before and after viewing the scene for sustained attention spans, along with a performance test upon completing a task. Subjects that looked at the scene with the verdant roof had significantly longer attention spans and fewer errors in doing their tasks.

review of research from the University of British Columbia tested the effects of tai chi exercise upon people with four chronic diseases: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, osteoarthritis and cancer. Dr. Yi-Wen Chen and his team analyzed 33 studies of more than 1,500 people that participated in tai chi. The research also tested the effects of the practice on general health, including walking speed, muscle strength, speed in standing up from a sitting position, quality of life, symptoms of depression and knee strength. The heart disease patients among the subjects showed a reduction in depression symptoms, and all shared a reduction of muscle stiffness and pain, increased speeds in both walking and standing from a sitting position and improved well-being. “Given the fact that many middleaged and older persons have more than one chronic condition, it’s important to examine the benefits of treatment/ exercise interventions across several co-existing conditions,” says Chen.

n analyzing 1,021 chemicals contained in fluids and wastewater used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for oil or natural gas, a Yale University study found that at least 157 of the chemicals—including arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde and mercury—are associated with either developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity or both. Of the total identified chemicals, 925 were used in the hydraulic fracturing process, 132 in fracking wastewater and 36 were present in both. The scientists utilized the REPROTOX database in the Chemical Abstract Service registry and then reviewed the available research, including human and animal studies. Toxicity data wasn’t available for 781 of the chemicals used in fracking. Among the other 240 chemicals, 103 were reproductive toxins. An additional 95 were developmental toxins. Another 41 have been found to be both reproductive and developmental toxins. The researchers further suggested that at least 67 of the chemicals be prioritized in drinking water testing. Senior author and Professor of Public Health Nicole Deziel, Ph.D., adds, “This evaluation is a first step to prioritize the vast array of potential environmental contaminants from hydraulic fracturing for future exposure and health studies. Quantification of the potential exposure to these chemicals, such as by monitoring drinking water in people’s homes, is vital for understanding the [associated] public health impact.”

Working Worms
Ground Control
Mealworms can safely and effectively biodegrade certain types of plastic waste, according to groundbreaking new research from Stanford University and China’s Beihang University. In two newly released companion studies, researchers reveal that microorganisms living in the mealworm’s gut effectively break down Styrofoam and plastic into biodegraded fragments that look similar to tiny rabbit droppings. Plastic waste takes notoriously long to biodegrade; a single water bottle is estimated to take 450 years to break down in a landfill. Due to poor waste management, plastic waste often ends up in the environment, and research reveals that 90 percent of all seabirds and up to 25 percent of fish sold in markets have plastic waste in their stomachs. Worms that dined regularly on plastic appeared to be as healthy as their non-plastic-eating companions, and researchers believe that the waste they produce could be safely repurposed in agriculture. Further research is needed before the worms can be widely deployed. It’s possible that worms could also biodegrade polypropylene, used in textiles, bioplastics and microbeads.
Down-to-Earth Climate Change Strategy The Center for Food Safety’s Cool Foods Campaign report Soil & Carbon: Soil Solutions to Climate Problems maintains that it’s possible to take atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) that fuels climate change and put it back into the soil, where much of it was once a solid mineral. There’s too much carbon in the atmosphere and the oceans, but not enough stable carbon in the ground supporting healthy soils. Cultivated soils globally have lost 50 to 70 percent of their original carbon content through paving, converting grasslands to cropland and agricultural practices that rob soil of organic matter and its ability to store carbon, making it more susceptible to flooding and erosion. Healthy soils—fed through organic agriculture practices like polycultures, cover crops and compost—give soil microbes the ability to store more CO2 and withstand drought and floods better, because revitalized soil structure allows it to act like a sponge. The report concludes, “Rebuilding soil carbon is a zero-risk, low-cost proposition. It has universal application and we already know how to do it.” Download the report at Tinyurl.com/CFS-Climate-Report.

Five Dozen Countries Now Ban or Label GMO Crops New rules implemented by the European Union now allow individual member states to block farmers from using genetically modified organisms (GMO), even if the variety has been approved on an EU-wide basis. Scotland was the first to opt out and Germany is next, according to German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt. Controversy concerning the safety and/or necessity of GMOs persists, but countries like these have decided not to idly sit by while the effects posed by long-term consumption of GMO foods are revealed. This move makes Germany one of between 64 and 74 countries that have instituted some type of ban or mandatory labeling requirements.

Lower Austria Wholly Powered by Renewable Energy Lower Austria, the largest of the country’s nine states and home to 1.65 million people, now receives 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources. The country’s total power output is about 70 percent renewable. The Danube River is so powerful that hydroelectric power is a natural choice. The mountainous geography means that vast amounts of energy can be generated from this high-capacity river rapidly flowing down through a series of steep slopes. The remainder of the state’s energy is sourced from wind, biomass and solar power. Source: IFLScience.com 17

EVERYDAY SUSTAINABILITY Practical Ways We Can Help Out the Planet by Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko
F
or many Americans, living more sustainably has become a natural part of their daily routine as they consistently recycle, eat healthy and use energy more efficiently. It’s just what they normally do every day. Every one of them had to start somewhere, growing their efforts over time to the point that nearly every activity yields better results for themselves, their family, their community and the planet. It might begin with the way we eat and eventually expand to encompass the way we work.
New American Way
“The sustainability movement is large and growing in the U.S.,” says Todd Larsen, with Green America, a grassroots nonprofit organization harnessing economic forces to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. “Half a million people turned out in New York City to march for action on climate change. People also are working in their local communi18

ties to oppose fracking and pollution, and to support green building and clean energy. Many businesses now include sustainability as a core business practice, including the 3,000 certified members of Green America’s Green Business Network.” This month, Natural Awakenings profiles the experiences of representative individuals from around the country that are helping to both make the world more sustainable and their own lives richer and more meaningful. From growing and cooking family food and line-drying laundry to powering their business with renewable energy, their approaches are as varied as the places they call home.
First Steps
“Many people start with something small at home, particularly if they’re concerned about the impacts on their family’s health,” says Larsen. “More Americans are approaching sustainability first through food. It’s relatively

easy to change spending habits to incorporate more organic, fair trade and non-GMO [genetically modified] foods, and with the growth of farmers’ markets nationwide, people are able to buy local more easily.” A focus on food quality is how Wendy Brown and her husband and five children launched their eco-journey just outside of Portland, Maine. “We started thinking about where our food came from, how it was grown and raised and what we could do to ensure that it was better,” says Brown. “What we don’t grow or forage ourselves, we try to purchase from local farmers.” Living more simply during the past decade has helped the family cut debt and become more financially stable. “Our entry point to sustainable living was to grow tomatoes on the steps of an apartment that Kelly and I once called home years ago,” echoes Erik Knutzen, who, with his wife Kelly Coyne, have transformed their 960-square-foot Los Angeles bungalow into an oasis where they grow food, keep chickens and bees, brew, bake and house their bikes. Gabriele Marewski’s journey also started with what she ate. “I became a vegetarian at 14, after reading Diet for a Small Planet, by Frances Moore Lappé,” says Marewski, who in 1999 turned an avocado orchard in Homestead, Florida, into Paradise Farms. “Forty-seven years later, I’m still a strict vegetarian. I believe it’s the single most important statement we can make about saving the planet.” Marewski’s five-acre farm showcases certified organic micro greens, edible flowers, oyster mushrooms and a variety of tropical fruits marketed to Miami-area chefs. Her farm also offers Dinner in Paradise farm-to-table experiences to raise funds for local nonprofits providing food for underprivileged city residents, and bed-andbreakfast lodging. Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology offers a free online course, Sustainability in Everyday Life, based on five themes: energy, climate change, food, chemicals and globalization. “People can make a difference by making responsible choices in their everyday life,” says Anna Nyström Claesson, one of the three original teachers.
Consume Less
“Every step toward sustainability is important and in the right direction,” explains Gina Miresse, with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), which will again host the world’s largest energy fair in June in Custer, Wisconsin. “It’s easy to start at home by adopting one new practice and sticking with it until it becomes a habit; then add a second practice and so on. This keeps people from getting overwhelmed.” We might, for example, switch to non-toxic home cleaning products when current products are used up. “There’s no need to throw everything in the trash and replace it all immediately—that would partially defeat the purpose of sustainability,” says Miresse. Green America, which suggests green alternatives to many products in online publications at GreenAmerica. org, recommends a congruent strategy. “We see people first change the way they purchase their food, move to reduce their purchases overall and green those they make, and then make their home more energy-efficient,” remarks Larsen. “Next, they consider walking and biking more.” Pamela Dixon explains, “On a day-to-day basis, it’s really about the products we use, like transferring to eco-friendly cleaners and yard maintenance, recycling electronic devices, paying bills electronically and receiving statements via email.” She and her husband, David Anderson, own Dave’s BrewFarm, in rural Wilson, Wisconsin, where they grow herbs, hops, raspberries and apples on 35 acres. “A 20-kilowatt wind generator supplies our electricity, and we use geothermal for heating and cooling,” adds Dixon. Due to career opportunities involving teaching principles of sustainability, the Wisconsin couple is in the process of selling the BrewFarm to move to La Crosse. “At our new home, we’re replacing the windows and appliances with more energy-efficient ones. We also chose our neighborhood so we can walk or bike to local grocery co-ops. We prefer to repair things when they break rather than buying something new, recycle everything the city will accept, compost food scraps and buy clothes at secondhand stores.”

When the MREA Energy Fair began 27 years ago, the majority of attendees were interested in learning about first steps, such as recycling, relates Miresse. Today, sustainability basics ranging from fuel savings to water conservation are familiar, and they’re focused on revitalizing local economies. “Folks are now considering more ambitious practices such as sourcing food directly from local farmers, producing their own solar energy and incorporating energy storage, driving an electric vehicle or switching to more socially responsible investing.” The fair’s 250 workshops provide tools to help in taking their next steps on the journey to sustainability. Knutzen and Coyne’s passion has evolved from growing food into a larger DIY mode. “Cooking from scratch is something I prefer to do,” comments Knutzen. “I even grind my own flour.” Library books provide his primary source of inspiration. The Brown family likely echoes the thoughts of many American families. “We have many dreams, but the stark reality is that we live in a world that requires money,” says Wendy Brown. An electric car or solar electric system, for example, is a large investment. “The biggest barriers were mental blocks because we ‘gave up’ previous lifestyle norms,” she says. “Most people we know have a clothes dryer and can’t imagine living without one. Line-drying is just part of the bigger issue of time management for us, because living sustainably and doing things by hand takes longer.”

“The biggest and most positive impact I have comes from my general nonwaste philosophy,” advises Brown. “I try to reuse something rather than throwing it away. I’ve made underwear out of old camisoles and pajama pants from old flannel sheets. I reuse elastic from worn-out clothing. My travel beverage cup is a sauce jar with a reusable canning lid drilled with a hole for a reusable straw. Such examples show how we live every day.” Marewski’s love of travel doesn’t interfere with her sustainability quest. “When I travel, I like to walk or bicycle across countries,” she says. “It gives me a closer connection to the land and spontaneous contact with interesting NABuxMont.com

people. I’m building a tiny home on wheels that’ll be completely self-sufficient, with solar, composting toilet and water catchment to reduce my footprint even further.” “Last August, I started a tenuretrack position in the school of business at Viterbo University,” says Dixon, who emphasizes how students can pursue sustainability in business and life. “I teach systems thinking, complex systems change and globally responsible leadership, all of which have a sustainability component.” She’s also faculty advisor to Enactus, a student organization focused on social entrepreneurship and making a positive impact on the community. “The best part of how we live is when my daughters make everyday eco-minded choices without even realizing it,” observes Brown. “I can see how remarkable it is, because I have the perspective of having lived differently. But for them, it’s just the way things are done. I think in that way, I’ve succeeded.” Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko’s ecojourney is captured in their books, ECOpreneuring, Farmstead Chef, Homemade for Sale, Rural Renaissance and Soil Sisters. Every day, they eat from their organic gardens surrounding their farm powered by the wind and sun.

sustainable planet begins with individuals making better choices, yet many consumers are unsure where to begin to reap the health and environmental benefits of creating a sustainable home. Fortunately, residents of Bucks and Montgomery counties have several options available. Dennis and Lee Hornick, owners of The Organic Mattress Store, entered the business after being so impressed with their first organic mattress that they decided to become distributors. “Dennis and I had purchased five conventional mattresses in seven years,” says Lee, noting that they’d long wanted an organic one, but lacked nearby retailers. When the couple sold their home in the Florida Keys to return to Pennsylvania in 2004, they enlisted their
nephew in California to purchase one there and have it shipped to them. Six months later they were enthusiastic retailers of the brand. Since then, in addition to offering top brands of organic mattresses, the Hornicks have developed their own private label, OMS. Lee warns that some companies market their mattresses as natural despite their containing hidden products like borate, silica, Kevlar or Tyvek. “We sell no synthetic products whatsoever. Even in our furniture line, there are no chemical coatings,” she explains. Their commitment extends to their showroom, which was com-

pletely gutted and refinished with nontoxic plaster walls, wool carpeting and Bioshield paints, containing no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). “Chemically sensitive people can breathe easy in our showroom,” she says. Breathing easy is also important to Mike and Amy Staub, owners of Your Organic Bedroom. “Our bodies rejuvenate while we’re sleeping, so it’s important that our sleeping environment be as non-toxic as possible,” says Mike. As the name suggests, the store offers organic and all-natural options in bedroom furnishings, including mattresses, bedding and sleepwear. In addition to selling the top brands, the Staubs offer customers the option of customizing mattresses. “All of our mattresses are made of natural cotton and wool, sourced and manufactured in the USA, and none contain chemical fire retardants, because premium ecowool is a natural fire retardant, as tested

and approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission,” says Staub. The store recently expanded to include a line of organic sofas and chairs that feature certified organic hemp, organic cotton duck or a blend of the two on a solid maple frame, with cushions wrapped in organic wool batting and filled with natural latex foam. For the remainder of the home, Environmental Home Store offers environmentally friendly kitchen, bath, flooring and paint options. According to owner Nick Cutrone, mainstream products often contain VOCs that evaporate into the air, a dangerous process known as off-gassing. “We’re typically aware of toxic chemicals only when we can smell them,” he says, “but toxins can be released into the air for many years after products are installed, leading to health issues including asthma, headaches, fatigue, allergies, depression and even cancer.” Founded with the mission to make sustainable living and working both accessible and affordable, the company’s services include consulting, design, construction and installation. Cutrone has completely redone the homes of several of his own family members and says all are impressed with the craftsmanship of the products and the air quality throughout the renovation process. “We are experts in replacing traditional materials with cutting-edge sustainable materials for roughly the same cost,” says Cutrone, adding that it’s not necessary to start with new construction. “There are many products available to help homeowners make the shift to a healthier, eco-friendly environment in their existing homes.” Our sustainable home experts look forward to partnering with readers to improve the health of their living environments. How can we begin to get and stay organized? It’s not about a set of rules, but acquiring the right mindset for becoming a tidy person. Think in concrete terms, NABuxMont.com
so that you can picture what it would be like to live in a clutter-free space. Start by identifying your bigger goal. Ask yourself why you want this, repeating the question to get to the root of the answer. As you explore the reasons behind your ideal lifestyle, you’ll realize that the ultimate reason is to be happy. Then you are ready to begin. I recommend cleaning out and organizing your entire space in one go-around. When completed, the change is so profound that it inspires a strong aversion to your previously cluttered state. The key is to make the change so sudden that you experience a complete change of heart. By discarding the easy things first, you can gradually hone your decision-making skills, including knowing who else can use what you don’t need. I recommend starting with clothes, then move to books, documents, miscellaneous items and finally anything with sentimental value. photo by Ichigo Natsuno

apanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo helps us discover happiness through tidiness. Already perusing home and lifestyle magazines by age 5, she spent her childhood “tidying” up her surroundings rather than playing with toys. The organizing system Kondo went on to develop, the KonMari method, defies most long-held rules of organizing, such as installing clever storage solutions to accommodate stuff or decluttering one area at a time. Her New York Times bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has been published in 30 countries, demonstrating that her methods speak to universal desires, including a hunger for order and simplicity. She’s now released a companion book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up. Kondo’s principles, including vertically stacking clothing and using special folding methods for socks, can seem quirky, yet her approach gets results. Kondo claims a nearly zero percent “clutter relapse” rate among clients because they’ve become surrounded only by things they love.
Is it important to touch every single object in the decision process? At one point in my life, I was virtually a “disposal unit”, constantly on the lookout for superfluous things. One day, I realized that I had been so focused on what to discard that I had forgotten to cherish the things I loved. Through this experience, I concluded
10 Tips for a Clutter-Clearing Cleanse
that the best way to choose what to keep is to actually hold each item. As you do, ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” When you touch something, your body reacts, and its response to each item is different. The process of assessing how you feel about the things you own—identifying those that have fulfilled their purpose, expressing your gratitude and bidding them farewell and good wishes for their onward journey—is a rite of passage to a new life.
Must keepsakes be included? Mementoes are reminders of a time that gave us joy, yet truly precious memories will never vanish, even if you discard the associated objects. By handling each sentimental item, you process your past. The space we live in should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.
What do you recommend for organizing what remains after a purge? The secret to maintaining an uncluttered room is to pursue simplicity in storage, so that you can see at a glance what you have. My storage rules are simple: Store all items of the same type in one place and don’t scatter storage space.
How does this process change us and our relationship to things? Through it, you identify both what you love and need in your home and in your life. People have told me that decluttering has helped them achieve lifelong dreams, such as launching their own business; in other cases, it has helped them let go of negative attachments and unhappy relationships. Despite a drastic reduction in belongings, no one has ever regretted it, even those that ended up with a fifth of their earlier possessions. It’s a continuing strong reminder that they have been living all this time with things they didn’t need. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, of Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

T
he word “cleanse” is often associated with the physical body. Sometimes neglected is the value of an emotional cleanse, especially when preparing for something as emotionally taxing as clearing out items in our homes or other personal spaces. Creating a concentrated period of time—even a few days—to mentally prepare for a de-clutter session allows us to remain aware, alert and focused.
6
Gather needed materials ahead of time, such as trash bags, recycling containers and storage boxes. Remember to think about what you might need for cleaning out the car, as well.
7
Decide ahead of time where you will keep items as you organize. Create a “home” for everything so you will always know where to find something.
Here are a few tips to make your experience as productive and regenerative as it can be.
8
Think about “emotional incompletes” that are weighing you down. Make a list of phone calls, e-mails and in-person meetings you intend to schedule, so you can mentally file them away.
9
If you know you might need assistance, hire a coach or professional organizer.
10
Prepare a short mantra that you can repeat to yourself during your de-cluttering, reminding yourself to be present and enjoy the process of releasing what no longer serves you.
1 2
Limit your engagement with phone calls and e-mails. Let others know you are going to be inaccessible. Set times that you will “check in”, but otherwise, let others know that you are on “vacation” and won’t be available for workaday activities.
3
Take time to slow down. Meditate, or take a yoga or tai chi class, or a walk in the park.
4
Allow yourself to imagine what it will feel like to be more light and free of clutter. Write about your imagined future in a journal or a sketchbook.
5
Release all guilt and “shoulds” of having to keep furniture and other items you don’t like or want that have been passed down to you from parents who have passed away. Enlist the guidance of a therapist, if necessary.

mericans have a junk storage habit. The Self Storage Association estimates that there are 2.3 billion square feet of storage space in the United States, enough for every citizen to stand in a storage unit simultaneously and not get rained on. That space is nearly full—of inherited furniture, broken typewriters, baseball bats, cast-iron pans, trophies, needlepoint and bad, bad novels. That’s the sustainable decorator’s raw material. Not only does mining this clutter keep treasures out of the landfill, but the results often have more intimacy and flair than an Architectural Digest showcase. What IKEA concoction can compare to the joy of digging out an heirloom and designing a room around it? The border on an antique rug informs an accent wall color. A silver-plated teapot, too battered to sell and too pretty to throw away—what a fabulous herb planter. That cupboard full of candle holders, cleaned up and distributed, turns any room into the set of Downton Abbey. Even old cans of paint, generally considered a toxicwaste disposal problem, can become the feature piece of a home design. Draw some sketches on a wall or staircase risers, fill in the colors, and a site-specific custom mural emerges. Bored with it? Just paint over it; no storage required. Accumulated stuff can be a burden, or it can be the potential energy that roars into life with the touch of an inspired hand. Home design becomes home permaculture—nothing is wasted, and everything is transformed. Stephanie Lee Jackson is an artist, designer and healer. Her company, Practical Sanctuary, helps create spaces that allow both customers and their clients to feel the way they want to—inspired, powerful and calm. nlike the physical environments of our offices, where it’s clear when things are out of place, the mental space is more complicated. It must be uncovered layer by layer. Taking 15 or 20 minutes at the start of the day to get mindfully curious about the nature of the tasks and projects that are on those bloated to-do lists can yield hours of surplus time and energy. When applying mindfulness to productivity, the first and often most difficult step is making the conscious effort to stop the habitual “go-go-go” mentality. In that pause, redirect the energy to these questions: n Of everything I have on my plate right now, what is the one thing that will best help me achieve my goals? n Am I truly the right person to do this, or is there someone who can do it better than I can? n Can I commit myself fully to this endeavor, and not allow myself to be derailed or distracted for 30 to 90 minutes, so that I can really make progress? n Is this thing I’m about to do really the most important to me… or is it important to someone else? Running faster and harder isn’t as important as running in the right direction. Sarah Mooers, Ph.D., is a productivity consultant serving the greater Philadelphia area. The center offers classes and trainings for meditation, I.E.T., Reiki and connection to divine energies that are beyond the physical realm. Nutrition is another of Gannotti’s passions, and is something she incorporates into her work with clients. “Seeds are the essence of life, and a powerful healing agent,” she says. “The nutritional density of seeds has been recognized for thousands of years. Each kind of seed has its own unique properties. For example, the phytonutrients in black cumin seeds contain antioxidants that cancel out free radicals. Grape seeds are full of flavonoids called proanthocyanidins, which support brain health and have anti-aging properties.” Working with seed nutrition for the past two years, Gannotti notes that dozens of her clients have reported improvement with chronic issues such as pain, acne, autoimmune issues, inflammation, mood swings, low energy and sleep disorders, among other ailments. While Gannotti sources from a host of modalities, the work is powerfully rooted in her willingness to share her own intimate struggles. The biggest challenge, she says, was overcoming her ego. “It got the best of me for a long time,” she admits. She uses the acronyms “Easing God Out” and “Earth Guide Only” to remind herself and her students about the limitations we experience when we are wrapped up in the “small self”. Another of Gannotti’s favorite learning phrases for working with painful past issues and trauma is, “Face it, Embrace it... and Replace it!” She says, “If you are raised with nothing but negativity, reprogramming yourself to be a positive person is not an easy task. Help is needed in order to make those changes permanent. We are here to plug into that light and into our Soul.” Soul Spirit Connection is located at 122 N. Old York Rd., Ste. 6 (rear), in Hatboro. Earth Song
Mother Nature’s Rhythms Restore the Soul by Susan Andra Lion
M
other Earth’s gentle hand is the secure cushion that warms us on long nights and sings comforting messages through endless days, protecting us even when things seem amiss. Take in her lovely presence. Embrace her consistent wisdom. Know that her dreams are ours and ours hers, connected by timely, comforting songs. It’s time to step away from the manicured lawns, concrete walks and well-planned gardens. An open door beckons us to the sparkling air out there to listen to the grasses breathe and murmur. Prairie grasses roll on and on through curvaceous hills and flat-edged fields, undeterred by human attempts to control their rippling arpeggios. We are asked to just listen. Be alone with the music of the grasses and be in harmony with the hum of the universe. Mother Earth’s apron is laden with flowers; simple, ever-present reminders that we are loved. She tempts us to take some time off, shed our shoes and settle into the lyrical realms of her strong body. The trees reach to the depths of the earth, deep into the mystery of lavender waters, and simultaneously throw their arms to the heavens, connecting all things living. The wind hears the prevailing songs that weave in and out of these lovely courtiers of the forest. In listening to their unerring stories, we let their siren songs sigh into our soul. It’s time to play in Earth’s garden and see her for who she is—today. Don’t hesitate. Go, play, linger, breathe and be one with the present moment. Adapted from Just Imagine Trees, a coloring book for all ages, by Susan Andra Lion.
practitionerspotlight From Brazil to Bucks County: Elaine Berk Offers John of God Crystal Healing Bed by Elisa Smith
T
herapist Elaine Berk helps clients resolve issues that have been plaguing them for decades. Her extensive training includes traditional talk therapy, past life regression therapy, hypnosis, reiki and energy psychology, which together offer what she calls an “extensive tool kit” for resolving clients’ most vexing issues. Among those tools is crystal light therapy. Berk is one of a select few granted permission to bring back and use a John of God Crystal Healing Bed, obtained from and named for the worldrenowned spiritual healer based at Casa de Dom Inácio, in Brazil. Millions of people have travelled to “the Casa”, as it is known, to experience the profound emotional, physical and spiritual healings performed by healing spirit guides referred to as “the Entities of Light”, as channeled through the man known as John of God. Oprah and Wayne Dyer are among those who have reported profound healing. As a frequent visitor to the Casa, Berk has experienced firsthand the powerful transformations that take place there, and she is honored to be chosen to bring this healing modality to others. The Crystal Healing Bed consists of seven pure, specially selected quartz crystals that are suspended 12 inches above the client. The crystals are lighted through color lenses that are then aligned to correspond to the body’s seven main energy centers, called chakras. Berk explains, “Opening and clearing these energy centers while also cleansing and restoring the biofield or aura—the energetic field surrounding the body—promotes healing, because
blockages, imbalances and energetic disturbances can cause or contribute to everything from anxiety and depression to pain and physical illness.” Sessions last from 20 to 60 minutes, and Berk says clients often report having the physical sensation of being “worked on”, as well as receiving guidance and clarity. Berk maintains the traditions practiced at Casa de Dom Inácio, including “sitting in current” to assist those seeking healing. “Every day, in a beautiful gesture of love, hundreds of people sit in deep meditation to sustain the high energy vibration that facilitates the healing work of the Entities of Light,” says Berk. She offers similar support by sitting in meditation in an adjoining room on
her clients’ behalf during healing bed sessions. Berk believes that healing is a 50/50 partnership between the spiritual plane and the recipient but maintains that the only thing required is an attitude of openness and receptivity. “John of God insists that he has never healed anyone, and that he only acts as a vessel for God to do the healing,” says Berk. “In that same spirit, I am grateful to be able to offer this service to anyone seeking healing.” Location: 110 N. State St., Newtown, and 423 N. Main St., Doylestown. For more information, call 215-970-1534 or visit PastLifeRegressionPA.com. See ad, page 15.

irtually all water, atmospheric water vapor and soil moisture presently gracing the Earth has been perpetually recycled through billions of years of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. As all living things are composed of mostly water and thus a part of this cycle, we may be drinking the same water that a Tyrannosaurus Rex splashed in 68 million years ago, along with what was poured into Cleopatra’s bath. Perhaps this mythological sense of water’s endlessness or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration images from outer space of a blue planet nearly three-quarters covered by water makes us complacent. Yet only 2.5 percent of Earth’s water is not salt water and of sufficient quality to be consumable by humans, plants and animals. Vulnerable to the demands of humanity’s unprecedented population explosion, careless development and toxic pollution and other contamination, we must reexamine this precious resource. Sandra Postel, founder of the Global Water Policy Project, who has studied freshwater issues for more than 30 years, says, “Communities, farmers
and corporations are asking what we really need the water for, whether we can meet that need with less, and how water can be better managed [through] ingenuity and ecological intelligence, rather than big pumps, pipelines, dams and canals.” Seeking to reclaim lost ground in the protection of our water and wetland resources, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed the 2015 Clean Water Rule. The new regulations are needed to restore the strength to the 1972 Clean Water Act that has been weakened by the courts and previous administrations. Notably, within hours of activating the regulation, the EPA was served with lawsuits from corporate polluters, and within weeks, more than 20 state attorneys general filed suit against it. Today the legal battle continues over whether the new regulation will be allowed to stay in force or not. “Every day, local, state and federal governments are granting permission to industries to pollute, deforest, degrade and despoil our environments, resulting in serious effects on our planet and our bodies,” says Maya K. van Rossum, a

Delaware Riverkeeper and head of the four-state Delaware Riverkeeper Network. Under van Rossum’s leadership the network has created a national initiative called For the Generations advocating for the passage of constitutional protection for environmental rights at both the state and federal levels. It was inspired by a legal victory secured by van Rossum and her organization in 2013 in a case titled Robinson Township, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, et al. vs. the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which used Pennsylvania’s Constitutional Environmental Rights Amendment to strike down significant portions of a pro-fracking piece of legislation as unconstitutional. Until this legal victory, Pennsylvania’s constitutional environmental rights amendment was dismissed as a mere statement of policy rather than a true legal protection. “Each individual process of fracking uses on the order of 5 million gallons of freshwater water mixed with chemicals for drilling and fracking operations, introducing highly contaminated wastewater into our environment,” explains van Rossum. “Every frack increases the chances of carcinogenic chemical leakage into the soil and water sources.” In the pioneering Pennsylvania case, the court’s ruling made clear that the environmental rights of citizens aren’t granted by law, but are
inherent and rights that cannot be removed, annulled or overturned by government or law. “Even more significant, the court stated that these environmental rights belong to present generations living on Earth today and to future generations,” enthuses van Rossum. She also cites that although America’s Declaration of Independence includes several inalienable rights, our federal constitution and those of 48 states fail to provide protection for three basic needs required to enjoy them— the right to pure water, clean air and healthy environments. Van Rossum’s audiences are shocked to learn that clean water isn’t enforced as a human right. Threatened by myriad environmental, political, economic and social forces, and contamination from carcinogenic pesticides, toxic herbicides, chemical warfare and rocket fuel research materials plus heavy metals like mercury and lead, an era of clean water scarcity already exists in parts of our own country and much of the world. Episodic tragedies like the 2015 Gold King Mine wastewater spill near Silverton, Colorado, and Flint, Michigan’s current lead-laced drinking water crisis raise public awareness. “The technologies and know-how exist to increase the productivity of every liter of water,” says Postel. “But
