R
ecently, we made our second trip as a family to the annual Taiwanese American Conference, this time in East Stroudsburg. A year ago, when I reported on our first visit there as a family and posted photos on Facebook, it prompted several acquaintances to ask about the event. It made me realize that the Taiwanese are one of the few cultures in the U.S. that holds a conference embracing three generations for its community. Other organizations and conferences gather subsets of our community, such as school-aged children, college kids or young professionals. While these have their place, I see the multigenerational conference as an amazing opportunity to instill family and cultural values and pass them along to succeeding generations. This year’s conference theme was Growth, perfectly timed for Natural Awakenings’ August Transformative Education and Children’s Health issue. Both venues encourage children to grow in ways that they might not realize as valuable until later in life. Leadership skills were a particular focus on this year’s conference. Independent thinking skills make a huge difference in personal development as illustrated in Sandra Murphy’s “Schools that Rock”, on page 18; here teachers and parents explain some of the alternative ways kids can learn most effectively, because when it comes to education one size does not fit all. A fun bonus of my own ongoing growth was the opportunity to write an article for the July-August 2014 issue of Mama’s Lil Guide. It was an honor to be chosen to contribute as a member of our community and highlighted “mama” to share with other mothers how I work to make life work in the midst of myriad demands. We all know how each day can be a challenge. I hope you pick up an issue when you see it around town. I rejoice that this summer I also managed to take time off for a short camping trip to French Creek State Park, where I meditated under July’s super moon. It proved to be a good time to mentally check in with myself and explore my emotional state of being. Unplugging from technology and letting go of accumulated stress was freeing. I returned feeling rejuvenated and wishing the same for you. To peace and growth,

Pine Bark Extract Reduces Perimenopausal Symptoms
r. Michael Gorman, DC, a practicing chiropractor and director of Gorman Optimal Health Solutions, in Fairless Hills, is one of two 2014 recipients of The Statuette with Pedestal, from the International Academy for Child Brain Development. Gorman received this award for his outstanding work with Michael Gorman profoundly brain-injured children. The award has been given to one or two honorees every year since 1956. Gorman joins prior recipients Dr. Theodore “Seuss” Geisel, Dr. Benjamin Spock, previous Nobel Prize winners Dr. Jonas Salk and Linus Pauling, among many others. Gorman Optimal Health Solutions is located at 333 N. Oxford Valley Rd., Ste. 402, Fairless Hills. For more information, call 215-872-6080 or visit GormanHealth.com.
R
esearch published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine confirms that pine bark extract can significantly reduce symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, including restless legs syndrome and hot flashes. For three months, 170 perimenopausal women were given 30 milligrams of Pycnogenol patented pine bark extract or a placebo twice a day. Although a placebo effect was noted, the supplement significantly improved all but two symptoms and was especially effective in improving vasomotor and insomnia/sleep patterns. The severity of symptoms among the Pycnogenol group, as measured by the Kupperman Index, decreased 56 percent more than for the placebo group. In another study, scientists from Italy’s Pescara University gave 70 perimenopausal women a placebo or 100 milligrams of Pycnogenol daily for two months. The supplement group experienced fewer menopausal symptoms and showed improvements with symptoms that include fatigue, insomnia, reduced concentration, memory problems, dizziness, depression and irritability.
Medicinal Mushrooms Boost Athletic Performance
R
esearch from Italy’s Pavia University found two medicinal mushroom species—cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) and reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)—significantly improve race performances and recovery times among competitive cyclists. The researchers studied seven male cyclists that had competitively raced for more than 10 years. For one month, they were given placebo supplements, after which the researchers tested their performance and recovery during races and workouts. Then, for the next three months, the cyclists daily used medicinal mushroom supplementation. The researchers found the mushrooms significantly increased performance and recovery in both workouts and races compared with the placebo period. The two types of mushrooms both boosted testosterone levels and reduced post-workout cortisol levels. The mushroom supplementation also increased their antioxidant status, reducing their risk of exhaustion.

Tough Family Life Linked to Chromosome Aging
W
hen Princeton University researchers analyzed data from a representative sample of 40 African-American boys enrolled in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study that followed children born in major U.S. cities between 1998 and 2000, they determined that those that lived through 9 years of age with less-stable families, such as parents with multiple partners and harsh or hostile parenting styles, had a higher probability of having shorter telomeres compared with other children. Telomeres were, on average, 40 percent longer among children from stable families. Telomeres are the segments of DNA at either end of a chromosome that protect the ends from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes. Shorter telomeres can decrease life expectancy by reducing the number of times our cells can divide, and scientists are discovering that a person’s living environment may lead to the condition. Using large cohort (age group) study data from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety, another group of researchers from Amsterdam’s Vrije University found significantly shorter telomere length among those with higher stress markers; the shorter length was also associated with aging approximately 10 years faster. In addition, the scientists observed significantly shorter telomere length among people with depressive symptoms lasting longer than four years; the shorter length correlated with both longer and more severe depression.
Heelless Shoes May Help Prevent Runners’ Injuries
A
British study published in Footwear Science analyzed the effects of running in experimental heelless footwear compared with conventional running shoes with reinforced heels. The objective was to see if the heelless footwear would reduce the risk of chronic injury related to the habitual rear-foot strike pattern associated with conventional heeled shoes. Using eight cameras with optoelectric running motion capture technology,12 male runners were tracked at four meters per second. The heelless running shoe resulted in less impact, greater plantar flexion and greater ankle eversion (rolling outward). The researchers concluded that the heelless shoes decreased the risk of chronic running foot injuries linked to excessive impact forces, but concede they may increase injury potential associated with excessive ankle eversion.

Healthiest U.S. Metro Areas in 2014 The American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) seventh annual American Fitness Index (AFI) ranks Washington, D.C., at the top with a score of 77.3 (out of 100), followed by Minneapolis-St. Paul (73.5), Portland, Oregon (72.1) Denver (71.7) and San Francisco (71). Overall, metro areas in 25 states scored 50 or above; the two lowest-ranking hovered near 25 points. “The AFI data report is a snapshot of the state of health in the community and an evaluation of the infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles. These measures directly affect quality of life in our country’s urban areas,” says Walter Thompson, Ph.D., chair of the AFI advisory board. Find the complete report at AmericanFitnessIndex.org.

Airports Establish Bee-Friendly Acres The Common Acre is a nonprofit partnering with the airport serving Seattle, Washington, and the Urban Bee Company (UrbanBee.com) to reclaim 50 acres of vacant land to plant native wildflowers as pollinator habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies and disease-resistant bee colonies. A GMO-free (no genetic modification) wildflower seed farm is also in the works. Bees present no threat to air traffic and the hives discourage birds that do pose a danger to planes. Beekeeper Jim Robins, of Robins Apiaries, in St. Louis, Missouri, rents an area with a plentiful supply of white Dutch clover, and Lambert Airport views his enterprise as part of its sustainability program. O’Hare Airport, in Chicago, the first in the U.S. to install hives, is rebuilding to its full complement of 50 hives after losing about half of them to 2014’s extreme winter. It’s a project that could be a model for airports everywhere—using inaccessible scrubland to do something revolutionary, like supporting a local food system. One hundred foods make up 90 percent of a human diet, and bees pollinate 71 of them. Learn more at CommonAcre.org.

Doctors Order Up a Bike for Patients The Prescribe-a-Bike program (Tinyurl.com/PrescriptionBikes) allows doctors at Boston Medical Center, in Massachusetts, to write low-income patients prescriptions for a one-year membership to Hubway, the city’s bike-sharing system, for $5, which is $80 less than the regular charge. A free helmet is part of the deal. According to The Boston Globe, one in four Boston residents is obese, and Kate Walsh, chief executive of Boston Medical Center, believes the program can help. “Regular exercise is key to combating this [obesity] trend, and Prescribe-aBike,” she says, “is one important way our caregivers can help patients get the exercise they need to be healthy.” Source: The Atlantic Monthly www.NABuxMont.com
Harvesting Fog

Simple Device Provides Safe Water in Africa The WarkaWater tower is providing an innovative new way to harvest safe drinking water, normally an onerous task in Ethiopia and many other parts of Africa. Obtaining water via repeated trips to the nearest source is extremely time-consuming and what’s collected is often highly contaminated and harmful to drink. Also, this task is commonly carried out by females, putting them in danger of sexual harassment or worse enroute. The towers, inspired by the native warka tree, are a vertical bamboo system that harvests potable, clean water from the air through condensation, using a fog-harvesting fabric that can collect up to 25 gallons of safe drinking water per day. Each tower costs about $550, and can be built in a few days by village residents using locally available materials.

n Buying new clothes can be expensive, and most of today’s synthetic fibers are petroleumbased, while toxic pesticides are commonly used to grow cotton. For healthier alternatives, check labels for clothes made from organic, low-impact or recycled materials such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo or recycled fibers. Inexpensive options are found in Salvation Army and other thrift store locations, as well as repurposing hand-me-downs among siblings. n Avoid buying all new school supplies. Gently used binders and book bags can last years. Sturdy, simple backpacks skip the cost of faddish brand-name and celebrity products. For supplies that must be replenished, like paper, seek out postconsumer-recycled options. n For lunch boxes, food containers and utensils, look for retro metal, a cloth bag and other alternatives to plastic (which can contain harmful chemicals) and glass (which can break). Beth Terry, in her book, Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too (MyPlasticFreeLife.com), suggests searching Mighty Nest.com and LifeWithoutPlastic.com, makers of stainless steel, naturally lacquered wood and other non-plastic, durable children’s bowls, cups, plates and utensils. n Healthy afterschool extracurricular activities today typically require driving commutes. Look into carpooling with nearby families to save time and gas, cut vehicle emissions and expand friendships. n Check the school’s eco-practices. Encourage local administrators to conduct recycling programs and to email documents to parents instead of using regular mail.

Don’t Die with Your Music Still in You Introduction by Wayne Dyer
While growing up, Serena J. Dyer, daughter of Wayne Dyer, found that the advice that was given to her friends from their parents was drastically different from the advice she was getting from her parents. While other kids were being told to follow the crowd, Serena and her seven siblings were being taught “to follow our own destiny, and to go within and trust our innermost voice. They were teaching us that we are all pieces of God, created with our own purpose in this world.” In her new book, Don’t Die with Your Music Still in You: My Experience Growing Up with Spiritual Parents, Serena J. Dyer shares the wisdom of the principles that she grew up with. Wayne Dyer wrote a touching introduction in that book. In honor of our Children’s Health issue, Natural Awakenings wanted to share an edited version of that introduction with our readers.
I
n the late 1990s, I was being interviewed on a late-night talk show in Sydney, Australia, and I was asked a question that I pondered quite a bit before responding to the host of the show. Upon returning home, I decided to write a book that would more thor-

oughly and conscientiously answer what I’d been asked. The host’s question had been something like, “After you have departed this earthly domain, what legacy would you like to leave for your 8 children to remember you by?” The 10 chapters in the book I

titled 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace represent the fundamental truths that I attempted to live by in my role as a teacher and parent. There is a fundamental axiom that both my wife and I practiced in the raising of our children, and it is this: Parents are not for leaning upon, but rather exist to make leaning unnecessary. Each of the 10 chapter titles in my book reflects the idea that we wanted to raise self-reliant children to become successful and peaceful adults. Success was not to be measured by external indices, such as how much money they made, or how far they advanced in an occupation, or how many awards they accumulated, or how they stacked up in comparison to their contemporaries. Rather, we wanted our children to value themselves, to become risk takers, to be self-reliant, to be free from stress and anxiety, to be able to celebrate their present moments, to experience a lifetime of wellness, to fulfill their own spiritual callings, to be creative—and, most significantly, to live with a sense of inner peace, regardless of any and all external circumstances. I wrote 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace so that my children would be able to have a compilation of the paramount ideas that formed the essential nucleus of my life’s teaching in one place. When I gave each of them a copy, I said, “If you ever wanted to know what was most essential to me, these are the ideas that I have attempted to live by, and these are the ideas that I employed in all of my parental interactions with you throughout your life.” My daughter Serena has now responded to the book I wrote with one of her own. The title she chose is taken from one of the most profound teachings that I have applied in my own life. As I’ve told her very frequently, there would be no greater tragedy than if she came to the end of her life and had the realization that she didn’t fulfill her own destiny. “You came here with music to play,” I told all of my children. “You don’t want to ultimately realize that you didn’t fulfill your own dharma because you tried to please someone

else’s mental picture of what you should be doing—and that includes me as your father as well.” Throughout her life, Serena has always been perplexed by the frequently asked question, “What was it like to have Wayne Dyer as your father?” With this book, she has done a masterful job of not only answering that question, but of also providing guidelines to readers for living the principles outlined in its pages. At the end of each of Serena’s chapters, I offer my own personal reaction to all that she has written. I couldn’t be more proud of Serena for taking on this mighty task of writing a book, and doing it with honesty and fearlessness. I know you will find it as informative and inspiring as I have. Drinking water has also been touted to help with bowel function, allow the kidneys to process toxic waste, energize muscles and help with calorie control. The Mayo Clinic has reported that while it is hard to say exactly how much water each individual should consume, the recommended eight servings of eight ounces of water is easy to remember and has stuck. Contigo has come up with an easy way to get this amount each and every day in a fun, fresh manner. The Contigo Autoseal Tritan Pitcher set is a spill- and leak-proof pitcher that seals for freshness, keeping out any odors. The set also includes an ice core, which can be frozen and used in place of the infuser stick to keep infused water cold without diluting the flavor. Learning that Transforms Hearts and Minds Rethinking How We See Our World Changes Everything by Linda Sechrist
I
n the 30 years since Harrison Owen introduced Open Space Technology (OST), it has been used hundreds of thousands of times by three-quarters of the world’s countries. Whether a few people gather in a circle to share ideas and brainstorm personal issues or thousands discuss a bulletin board of topics around tables, OST is a safe, informal venue for transformative learning. Guided by purpose-based, shared leadership, it allows individuals focused on a specific task to freely speak their thoughts and be heard. It also encourages breakout groups to mine for more information—learning individually, as well as collectively, and self-organizing in order to concentrate on more complex topics. “Boeing engineers used OST to learn how to redesign airplane doors and young Egyptians used it to strategize for their Arab Spring,” as examples, comments Owen.
Circle Principle
For Owen, like Jack Mezirow, author of the paper, “Core Principles of Transformative Learning Theory,” 20thcentury Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and Juanita Brown, co-founder of The
16
BuxMont-Main Line Edition
World Café, learning is transformation, the keystone of life, and the essence of meaningful education. “The circle principle contains the predictability of fresh, emerging thoughts and learning that never occurred previously,” explains Owen. He points to an experiment regarding children’s capacity for selflearning initiated by Sugata Mitra, Ph.D., the former science director of an educational technology firm in India. On the outside wall of the building where he worked, Mitra installed a computer facing a New Delhi slum where most children were unschooled and illiterate and had never seen a computer. He turned it on and told children they could play with it. Via a noninvasive video camera, he watched 7-to-13-year-olds discover how to use the computer and teach each other how to play music and games and draw using Microsoft’s Paint program. Repetition of the experiment in other impoverished sections of India yielded similar results. Wherever he established an Internet connection, children that could not read English, the Internet’s default language, taught themselves how to use the Web to
www.NABuxMont.com
obtain information through their interactions with each other and the computer. “I agree with what Mitra surmised from his experiment—learning is emergent, which is another word for self-organizing,” remarks Owen. Like Freire, Owen likens traditional education to the “banking” method of learning, whereby the teacher passes information to students that become dependent on someone else rather than learning how to think on their own. Suzanne Daigle, a Sarasota, Florida-based consultant with a Canadian multidisciplinary consulting firm, explains how the OST learning environment changed her life: “My personal transformation began in 2009. Even though I was a leader in my corporate career, I doubted myself and often believed that what others had to say was more significant and interesting than what I could express.” Now she says she has shed her people-pleasing tendencies and former attempts to control other people’s agendas and discovered the freedom and courage of her own voice. “As an OST facilitator, my life work now occurs in the moments I am collaboratively learning and listening for opportunities to enter into meaningful conversations that can lead to actions,” says Daigle. “I invite others to do the same.”
Co-Learning
In a compulsory two-year Theory of Learning class for an International Baccalaureate degree at California’s Granadas Hill Charter High School, math and science educator Anais Arteaga helps students apply two major elements of transformative learning: self-reflection to critique one’s own assumptions and discourse through which they question or validate their judgments. She focuses on the roles that perception, language, reason and emotion play in a student’s learning and decision-making abilities. “Questions and lively discussions are the basis of the class,” Arteaga says. “We begin with a question and explore what we know, how we know it and any conclusions drawn from the process.”
Using a democratic model in which the teacher welcomes critical discussion, Arteaga and her students have mutually discovered that knowledge is not static, but has a history and changes over time. “When we first started the class, it was challenging to accept that in many situations there is no right or wrong, just relativity and a matter of perception. We don’t really know anything for certain,” she remarks.
Worldview Explorations
Katia Petersen, Ph.D., is the executive director of education at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), headquartered in Petaluma, California. She codeveloped the tools, practices and 22 lessons in the pioneering organization’s Worldview Explorations (WE) project. Founded on 40 years of IONS research, WE engages everyone in age-appropriate ways in reflecting upon long-held assumptions and how beliefs create the lens they see through, ultimately improving how they understand and respond to the world. “When individuals understand the power of offering their story and are open to the worldview stories of others, they no longer focus attention on differences and limitations,” says Petersen. “They realize that everyone has their own truth. “WE’s transformative learning experiences draw from the heart and soul of individuals, rather than stuff-

ing heads with ideas and perspectives, which serves them well as they embody and apply these tools and practices in their daily lives.” She cites a particularly powerful moment for a group of young people she worked with. “A student was killed in a drive-by shooting two weeks before their certification. The transformative moment came when they said that their new awareness and capacity for compassion and understanding would not allow them to seek revenge. Instead, they chose to save lives in their communities using their new skills.”
World Café
Like OST, the World Café, co-created by Brown and David Isaacs, of Burnsville, North Carolina, creates a transformative learning environment for individuals of all ages. Its primary principles are: set the context, create hospitable space, explore questions that matter, encourage everyone’s contributions, connect diverse perspectives, listen together for patterns and insights and share collective discoveries. Webs of conversation created around actual or occasionally virtual tables resemble those found in coffeehouses. “Conversation is a core meaningmaking process, and people get to experience how the collective intelligence of a small or large group can become apparent,” says Brown. After
several rounds of conversation on one or more topics, participants offer their harvest of key insights, learning and opportunities for action with the full group gathered to reflect together on their discoveries. “World Café provides an environment in which you are comfortably drawn forward by the questions you are asking together. When enough diversity is present, varied perspectives are offered and people feel listened to and free to make their contribution,” observes Brown. What participants learn in this setting creates the climate of conditions that support the kinds of transformations that can change lives. Brown remarks, “When it happens to me, I feel like my brain cells have been rearranged. I know something in the collective, as well as the individual, has been evoked, so that something never before imagined becomes present and available.” Transformative learning has been compared to a sea journey without landmarks. Adventurous individuals that are open to traversing its highly engaging processes can emerge as autonomous thinkers, capable of contributing fresh, new ideas that just might transform the world we live in. Waldorf
Schools that Rock Innovators Blaze Creative Paths by Sandra Murphy
Creative educational initiatives offer more flexible programs of study than traditional institutions. First introduced into the United States in the latter part of the 20th century, today there are thousands of such facilities operating according to their own lights. Yet many share certain distinguishing characteristics including emphasis on close student-teacher relationships, diverse experiential learning and development of student decision-making skills aided by peer and parental support. All aim to prepare and equip students for future success both inside and outside the classroom.
Montessori
At age 3, kids at the Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School, in Maryland, are gaining early math and motor skills, plus an appreciation for healthy foods, in unique and innovative ways. “The children roll out a long mat containing 1,000 beads that they use to learn to count by twos, fours and 10s,” says Jenny Smolen, development coordinator and grant writer for the school. “When it’s time for multiplication and division, they’re prepared.” The school is located in a food desert—fresh, unprocessed food isn’t readily available—so the kids plant

seeds to grow in pots until it’s time to transplant them to the garden. “Before the seed-to-table program, the kids didn’t know what fresh tasted like. Now they go home and ask for vegetables for dinner,” says Smolen. The school also has six chickens that supply fresh eggs, and two beehives produced 100 pounds of honey last year that was sold to raise funds. The school is free of charge to Baltimore city students chosen by lottery. Currently, 330 students from diverse backgrounds ages 3 through 13 attend, with 1,000 names on the waiting list.

Waldorf School alumna Jocelyn Miller, an account manager at Matter Communications, drives 45 minutes from Newburyport, Massachusetts, to take her three children to the The Waldorf School at Moraine Farms, in Beverly. “On bad weather days, I wonder why I make the drive, but the smiles when we arrive are worth it,” she says. There, her children spend time outdoors regardless of the weather. Indoors, they draw illustrations to bolster lessons on history and geography. Second-graders work in three-hour blocks of time, rather than the traditional 45 minutes. Fifth-grade students recently spent three weeks studying Greek mythology. Older students play in an orchestra and learn German and Spanish. They also knit; the craft builds manual dexterity and helps children learn to plan, correct mistakes, be creative, visualize the finished product and mindfully create something useful or decorative. Middle school and high school students at the Waldorf School of Garden City, in New York, universally participate in seasonal sports—baseball, softball, basketball and soccer. The emphasis on the values of teamwork and sportsmanship complement development of skills. The school’s policy is, “You don’t have to be a superstar to get playing time,” noting that the quality of athletic teams is consistently strong. The school also brings some green into the city with a horticultural program that fully cultivates a quarter-acre field. Its steady harvest of fruits, vegetables, herbs and grains includes lettuce, beans, spinach, broccoli, kale, corn, oregano, thyme, rosemary, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. A new greenhouse keeps produce growing through winter months. Students at Conservatory Prep High School, in Davie, Florida, were tasked with finding a way to walk on water in order to explore principles of flotation and buoyancy. After researching and experimenting with each of a series of materials, they analyzed what went wrong, worked to fix it and then tried again. “We did the testing at our onsite pool,” says Wendy Weiner, Ed.D., the school’s founder and prin-

Un-Schooling
cipal and a Waldorf alumna. “We saw some pretty funny results, but they eventually invented a pair of shoes that worked. Of course, they were pretty big shoes.”
Homeschooling
Homeschooling provides another option. Parents don’t need to know all about a subject with organizations like Bridgeway Academy’s homeschool curricula at hand. This Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, institution provides easy access to tools and support for families nationwide. “We’re a kindergartento-12th-grade provider,” says Jessica Parnell, academy president. “Teachers in a school setting have to teach standardized subjects, in certain ways, to the whole class. We use customized learning to inspire and excite children individually. We help parents discover their child’s learning style, personality and ideal learning environment.” Materials provided include instructor guides, user-friendly websites and interactive games and other activities. “It gives kids the freedom to explore,
Un-schooling, another pioneering approach, is a method of homeschooling in which children pursue areas that interest them, eat foods they enjoy, rest when needed, choose friends of all ages or none at all and engage their world in unique, powerful and self-directed ways. Suzanne Strisower, a life and career coach in Oroville, California, has written a common-core, standards-based curriculum for un-schoolers. “It’s a yearlong program for ages 15 and up designed to enable a student to realize his career path and life’s purpose,” she says.
Online Tutorials
“There’s an explosion in online learning, too,” observes Bob Bowdon, executive director of nonprofit Choice Media, an education news service at Choice-
Media.tv, produced in New York City. School kids in some states are able to opt out of a class at school if they feel the teaching style is holding them back, instead tapping online teachers available in a virtual school setting. Louisiana’s Department of Education’s Jump Start program partners high schools and local companies to offer students one-day-a-week internships apprenticing in trades. “It’s real-world, on-the-job training,” says Bowdon. Thanks to such innovative approaches to school curricula and technology, parents and children have more options than ever before for learning. Instead of memorizing information until the next test and then forgetting it, more learning is customized and hands-on, because children that learn by doing, remember. Why Waldorf? by Stephanie Smith
A
Waldorf education at River Valley Waldorf School prides itself in educating the head, hands and heart. It inspires. A visit to a first grade “main lesson”— the first two hours of the day when the primary content is delivered—would reveal children variously clapping, stomping, singing, writing in their main lesson books, painting and drawing. They are obviously inspired. But how, exactly, is this done? How does a Waldorf school approach teaching differently from its public and private counterparts? One dramatically different approach is the block scheduling Waldorf schools use for this first two-hour section of the day. At River Valley, a given subject—such as first grade language arts taught through ancient fairy tales, writing through the Norse myths in fourth grade, botany in fifth, Roman history in sixth or physics in eighth—is taught for a three- to five-week block of time. This structure allows for an in-depth understanding of the subject, which is encouraged by approaching the ideas through not just the “head,” but through the hands and heart as well— artwork engages both. The blocks offer more concentrated experiences of subjects, and require fewer classes a day for children to attend, which in turn reduces stress. The reduction of stress in children’s lives is both incredibly valuable and unfortunately—from the perspective of the Waldorf movement—undervalued in the stressed out arena of high-stakes testing that has become the reality in most public schools. A tightly held belief among Waldorf teachers worldwide is that the day is organized to allow for what is known as “in-breath” and “out-breath”, a concept yoga

SEAFOOD Navigate Today’s Best Choices Using Updated Guides by Judith Fertig
We love our seafood, a delicious source of lean protein. The latest data reports U.S. annual consumption to be more than 4.8 billion pounds of it, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with the average American eating 3.5 ounces of seafood a week. About half of the catch is wild-caught and half farmed. How do we know which fish and shellfish are safe to eat and good for ocean ecology?
T
he best approach is to choose seafood carefully. Oil spills, waste runoff and other environmental disasters can compromise the quality of seafood with toxic contaminants like mercury and other heavy metals and industrial, agricultural and lawn chemicals. These pollutants can wash out from land to sea (and vice versa). As smaller fish that have eaten pollutants are eaten by larger ones, contaminants accumulate and concentrate. Large predatory fish like swordfish and sharks end up with the most toxins. Beyond today’s top-selling shrimp, canned tuna, salmon and farmed tilapia, more retailers and restaurants are also providing lesserknown seafood varieties like dogfish

and hake as alternatives to overfished species such as sea bass and Atlantic cod. These new-to-us, wild-caught fish can be delicious, sustainable and healthy.
Choices Good for Oceans
An outstanding resource for choosing well-managed caught or farmed seafood in environmentally responsible ways is Seafood Watch, provided through California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium. Information on the most sustainable varieties of seafood is available in a printed guide, updated twice a year. The pocket guide or smartphone app provides instant information at the seafood counter and restaurant table. Online information at
www.NABuxMont.com
SeafoodWatch.org and via the app is regularly updated. The Blue Ocean Institute, led by MacArthur Fellow and ecologist Carl Safina, Ph.D., supports ocean conservation, community economics and global peace by steering consumers and businesses toward sustainably fished seafood. It maintains a data base on 140 wild-caught fish and shellfish choices at BlueOcean.org. Hoki, for instance, might have a green fish icon for “relatively abundant” and a blue icon for “sustainable and well-managed fisheries,” but also be red-flagged for containing levels of mercury or PCBs that can pose a health risk for children. As species become overfished, rebound or experience fluctuating levels of contaminants, their annual ratings can change.
Choices Good for Us
To help make choosing easier, Seafood Watch has now joined with the Harvard School of Public Health to also advise what’s currently safe to eat. Entries on their list of “green” fish, which can shift annually, are low in mercury, good sources of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and caught or farmed responsibly. If the top-listed fish and shellfish aren’t locally available, look for the Seafood Safe label, started by EcoFish company founder and President Henry Lovejoy, which furnishes at-a-glance consumption recommendations based upon tests for contaminants. Labels display a number that indicates how many four-ounce servings of the species a woman of childbearing age can safely eat per month. (Find consumption recommendations for other demographics at SeafoodSafe.com.) Expert-reviewed independent testing of random samples of the fish currently monitors mercury and PCB levels. Lovejoy advises that other toxins will be added to the testing platform in the future. “My dream is to have all seafood sold in the U.S. qualify to bear the Seafood Safe label, because consumers deserve to know what they’re eating,” says Lovejoy. “We need to be a lot more careful in how we use toxic chemicals and where we put them.”
The truth is that no one fish can be seen as a sustainability darling, because if it is, it’s sure to be overfished. ~ DailyFinance.com
Retail Ratings
Some retailers also provide details on their seafood sourcing. Whole Foods, for example, offers complete traceability of the fish and shellfish they carry, from fishery or farm to stores. Their fish, wild-caught or farmed, frozen or fresh, meet strict quality guidelines in regard to exposure to antibiotics, preservatives and hormones. They also display Seafood Watch and Blue Ocean Institute ratings at the seafood counter. Wise seafood choices feed and sustain our families, foster a healthier seafood industry, support responsible local fisheries and keep Earth’s water resources viable. Grilled Black Sea Bass with Mango Salsa
Yields 4 servings Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Nut-free Grilled Black Sea Bass 1 whole black sea bass, about 3 pounds 2 Tbsp canola oil Salt and pepper, to taste
Mango Salsa 2 ripe mangos, peeled, seeded and chopped roughly 3 Tbsp canola oil 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar 2 tsp diced red onion ½ tsp finely chopped fresh jalapeño pepper ½ tsp finely chopped garlic ½ tsp chopped mint Ask your fish seller to clean the bass, snip off the long fins and remove the gills. Leave the head on. To make the Mango Salsa, combine all ingredients and refrigerate overnight. Before serving, allow the salsa to warm up to room temperature. Season the fish with salt and pepper,
coat with the oil and refrigerate for at least an hour before grilling. Heat up grill. Charcoal is best, however gas grills do provide an even heat and are convenient. Place the oiled fish onto a hot spot to sear the skin. Flip the fish after 5 minutes. When the skin of the fish is crispy, move it to a cooler area of the grill to finish cooking. Avoid turning the fish too often, as it may come apart on the grill. Cook the fish until it begins to flake when pressing down near the head. Total cooking time will be under 25 minutes. Remove the bass from the grill and place it on a serving platter. Serve the Mango Salsa on the side. Recipe submitted by Lou Farrell of Fresh Fun Foods. Connect at 215353-8947. See ad, page 19.

Super-Immunity for KIDS
Pinpoint Allergies
Simple Ways to Boost a Child’s Long-Term Health
Shore Up with Supplements
by Lisa Turner
We’d love it if our kids had fewer sick days away from school, but what if by bolstering their immune systems now, we could also protect them from serious diseases going forward?
D
“
uring childhood, when the immune system is still developing, there’s a great opportunity to set the stage for improved health and resilience,” says Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a family physician and nutritional researcher in Flemington, New Jersey, and author of Disease-Proof Your Child. “A healthy diet and lifestyle can help kids avoid common childhood illnesses like colds, ear infections and allergies, as well as ensure greater resilience against disease later in life.”
Focus on HighQuality Foods
Fruits and veggies have a wealth of protective phytochemicals that enhance immune cell function and protect against disease. In a

Food allergies and sensitivities can suppress the immune system by increasing inflammation in the body and call for consultation with a health specialist. “Whenever there is extra inflammation, the body has less available energy to keep the immune system functioning as well as it should,” says Dr. Fred Pescatore, a New York author of The Allergy & Asthma Cure. “It’s like putting the wrong type of gasoline in the car; it hinders your performance.”
study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, kids that ate the most fruit had a 38 percent lower risk of cancer later in life. Berries, cherries, plums and pomegranates are among the most powerful immune-boosting fruits. For veggies, eat more dark leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. Also emphasize whole grains and healthy fats such as those found in nuts, seeds and avocado, advises Fuhrman. Sugar-laden calories depress the infection-fighting activity of white blood cells, says Dr. Alan R. Gaby, of Concord, New Hampshire, author of the textbook, Nutritional Medicine. Even natural sweeteners such as honey and juice have similar effects when consumed in excess, he says. Try healthy options like pomegranate and kiwi fruit salad; trail mix with raw almonds; dried
www.NABuxMont.com
Probiotics can enhance immune function in children by stimulating white blood cells and reducing inflammation, says Gary B. Huffnagle, Ph.D., a University of Michigan Medical School immunology research professor and author of The Probiotics Revolution. They are especially protective against allergies, diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. Start with yogurt: Serve with cereal; mix with mashed bananas and freeze in ice cube trays for a cool treat; or make smoothies with unsweetened, non-dairy yogurt and frozen berries. Or consider a Lactobacillus acidophilus supplement; aim for 5 billion CFUs per day of Lactobacillus or bifidobacterium. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), an ayurvedic herb, boosts immunity by supporting and balancing adrenal function, says Dr. John Douillard, Ph.D., a Boulder, Colorado, chiropractor, ayurvedic physician and author of Perfect Health for Kids. The adrenal glands produce cortisol, and overproduction of this “fight-or-flight” hormone can dampen immunity. Ashwagandha is particularly helpful for preventing colds and can also be used when kids are stressed or tired. For children ages 6 to 12, give 500 milligrams per day with breakfast; children over 12 can take 1,000 mg a day.
Tell kids they’ll get sick, and chances are it’ll happen. Instead, nurture an attitude of wellness and help them learn they have control over their own health.
live in a cloudy region, they may need vitamin D supplements—at least 200 IU per day.
Laugh Out Loud
“You can give your kids the best food and nutrition, but if they have underlying sadness, their immune system will suffer,” remarks Sheppard. “When you’re happy and when you laugh, your brain releases chemicals that increase immunity.”
Stabilize Hormonal Changes
Lisa Turner is a Colorado-based health writer.
“Puberty and adolescence are marked by dramatic shifts in and surges of hormones,” says Dr. Richard Shames, of Sebastopol, California, co-author of Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? “This is monumental, as far as the developing immune system is concerned. As the immune system is directly linked to hormonal influences, any hormonal imbalance will affect overall immunity.” Shames recommends selenium— a potent antioxidant and general immune booster—to help balance hormones. For children ages 8 to 18, aim for 100 mg per day.
Let ’em Get Dirty
“Once a child has been exposed to dirt and germs, the immune system responds by trying to expel those bacteria from the body, which strengthens immunity,” counsels Jane Sheppard, owner of HealthyChild.com and founding executive director of the Holistic Pediatric Association. Avoid antibacterial soaps, cleansers and gels; most contain the chemical triclosan, which some researchers suspect of contributing to development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Instead, use a natural antibacterial gel or make one, by combining witch hazel or alcohol, tea tree oil and lavender essential oil.

have no long-term effects and do not increase the likelihood of seizure disorders (epilepsy). In fact, even temperatures of 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit do not cause any brain injury. If the sick person is not made to eat, the fever shouldn’t need to go that high anyway. By reducing the fever, the child will have decreased ability to fight the infection and an altered immune system.
Fever Myths Every Parent Must Know by Julie Lachman
W
hen a child is sick and uncomfortable with a fever, a parent’s natural instinct is to make him or her feel better. What many parents do not know is that some of the most common therapeutics for fever can actually sideline recovery. Fever is the body’s normal response to invasion by bacteria or viruses. Animals will sit in the sun when sick, and fish will swim in warmer water. The ability to mount a strong fever is a good sign. The common cold virus (rhinovirus) can live only at the temperature of the nose, which is why it can’t invade further into the body—it’s too hot. The simple process of heating the body kills germs. Fevers also cause the body to be achy—so we stay put and rest—and have a diminished appetite.
Myth #1: When sick with fever, it’s important to keep our strength by eating, even if we’re not hungry. Truth: Animals don’t eat when they’re sick.
28
BuxMont-Main Line Edition
Why? If the body has to send blood to the stomach, there is less focus on attacking the virus or bacteria. Also, bacteria need iron to replicate, so eating may feed them as well. If a child is feeling somewhat better, but perhaps still slightly feverish, feeding him may cause the fever and illness to return that night. Restricting food for one more night gives the body a chance to finish the job. To shorten the duration of illness, never feed someone until the fever is below 99.6 degrees Fahrenheit and the person is hungry.
Myth #2: High fevers may cause seizures or brain damage, which can be devastating. Truth: There have been no studies linking high fevers with any permanent damage. Hyperthermia from sunstroke can cause coma or delirium, but this is very different from a fever, which is a normal response to infection. While it is true that two to four percent of children may develop simple febrile seizures, these seizures— though scary—
www.NABuxMont.com
Myth #3: Acetaminophen (commonly sold as Tylenol) is safe during fevers or when used to prevent fevers commonly associated with vaccinations. Truth: Acetaminophen lowers fever by stopping some of the normal pathways associated with feverish diseases, and it also stops some of the normal immune functioning. Recent research published in the British journal The Lancet revealed that children who received this drug with vaccinations had their immune system so affected by the drug that they had lower levels of immunity to the vaccinated diseases than children who didn’t receive the drug. When a child is sick with a bacteria or virus, or is getting vaccinated, the last thing we want to do is lower his immunity. Additionally, the risk for side effects increases when a child is sick due to dehydration and undernutrition. What’s a parent to do? To help a child recover quickly from illness, supporting rather than suppressing the fever is the answer. Keep the child comfortable with cool compresses to the forehead and plenty of clear, no-sugar beverages and fresh soup broths. Sugar decreases the function of the immune system by half for five to seven hours, so never give soda to a sick child. Be sure to keep him warm if he’s chilly. Let his body do the tough work of destroying the bacteria quickly, so he can be back to feeling like himself sooner. Time for a Trip to the ‘Tickle Doctor’ Pediatric Non-Needle Acupuncture
W

hen a little one is faced with a chronic health issue, conventional medicine often leaves parents with few non-pharmaceutical options. Recurring ear infections, colic, GERD, constipation or diarrhea, asthma, allergies, eczema and hives, ADHD, sleep disorders and low immunity are among the common issues parents see in their kids today. Without knowledge of safe, natural medicine approaches, parents are faced with either medicating their kids, or feeling like they are neglecting the problem—and their children—by doing nothing. Fortunately, there is a long tradition of safe and holistic pediatric treatment according to East Asian medicine, using non-invasive methods related to acupuncture. In Japan, pediatric acupuncture is called Shonishin, which translates literally to “little children needle”. Although they are referred to as needles, the flat metal or plastic tools used in a Shonishin treatment never puncture the skin. After performing a diagnosis by learning the child’s history, observing and palpating, the acupuncturist uses Shonishin tools to manipulate specific points and regions of the body—gently stroking, tapping, scratching or pressing to achieve the desired result. As with acupuncture, the objective of Shonishin is to diagnose a pattern of energetic imbalance, and to stimulate points that will send a balancing message to the body. This message promotes the child or infant’s natural healing ability and the restoration of internal organ function, tissue health and energetic harmony. Even though Japanese acupuncture already is very gentle, using thin needles and mostly painless stimulation, the entirely non-invasive techniques of Shon-
ishin make it even gentler and not scary for kids and infants. The light scratching, tapping and pressing from the treatments can feel anywhere from calming and soothing, to exciting and funny. Children may end up calling their Shonishin acupuncturist the “tickle doctor”. Another way Shonishin differs from adult acupuncture is in the short duration of treatments. In East Asian medicine a child is looked at as having an abundance of yang and rapidly moving qi, meaning the stimulation does not need to be strong to get change to happen in the child’s energetic pattern. Therefore, the duration of appointments only has to be five to 20 minutes—depending on the child’s age, constitution and problem. Although treatments can be very short, some frequency of treatment is desirable in chronic conditions in order to get a new energetic pattern to stick. For those parents who cannot make it to the “tickle doctor” as frequently, one can learn a simple, individualized Shonishin routine to perform at home—empowering the parent to help bring their little one back to good health. For parents or expectant parents, Shonishin should be kept in mind as a safe, painless tool to help children stay healthy and energetic. Grace Rollins, MS, LAc, is the owner of Bridge Acupuncture, in Doylestown. She studied Shonishin in Osaka, Japan, and has practiced acupuncture, moxibustion and shiatsu for 10 years. Paolo Propato, LAc, practices acupuncture and Shonishin at Bridge Acupuncture, as well as on his 1-year-old son Issa, at home. Connect with them at 215-9339676 or BridgeAcupuncture.com. Getting in Shape in Your 50s by William J. Strimel
E
ven for those that haven’t exercised since high school gym class, it’s never too late to start. According to the Arthritis Foundation, it now appears that exercise—specifically, resistance training—actually rejuvenates muscle tissue in healthy, older adults. Numerous difficulties of aging are linked to an inactive lifestyle. There is no better way to maintain good health in later life than through exercise. Aerobic exercise has consistently shown to lead to a variety of health benefits, including weight reduction, lower blood pressure, lessening of chronic pain and improvement in mood and energy levels. People who perform the least activity now have the most to gain from getting started. Going from sedentary to even mildly active can reduce the risk of dying from heart disease by almost 20 percent. Before starting an exercise program, a doctor should be consulted. National guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health encourage 150 minutes—or two and a half hours—of aerobic exercise a week. This can include such activities as walking, swimming or cycling. A plan should be created to spend a half hour being active five days a week. Even daily
activities like gardening, household chores and walking the dog help the body stay active and healthy. Here are some fitness tips for people who want to start exercising: n Seek the help of a fitness expert. There are gyms with specialized senior fitness programs and personal trainers who specialize in working with older adults. n Look for ways to squeeze in fitness whenever and wherever possible. Choose stairs over the elevator, park at the far end of the parking lot, etc. n Warm up before exercise and stretch afterward. Easy walking at a very slow pace for about five minutes is one way to warm up or cool down. Stretching is an important part of flexibility and will help offset the effects of normal decline in the flexibility of joints with age. n Make proper form a priority. Any exercise done improperly can be dangerous. Bad form not only hinders results, but also increases risk of major injuries such as back problems. n Add strength training. Strength training is critical for older adults. Adults

lose four to six pounds of muscle tissue per decade, which means a significant loss of body strength and a lower resting metabolism. Try to add some form of strength training two days a week for approximately 20 minutes. Low weight, high repetition is the best initial approach. n Know when it’s time to make a change. Increase the amount of time or difficulty of exercise as things become easier. To experience continued improvement in fitness, the body requires progressively challenging workouts. If there is any discomfort after exercising, it should be short-lived and not carry on for hours or days. Start out slow to see how the body handles this change in lifestyle. William J. Remarlé Provides Natural Skin Relief
R
by Alyssa Capel
enee LeMasney, creator of Remarlé Natural Skin Care, believes that smooth, healthy skin can be a reality for everyone—naturally. What began as a search for relief for her own skin ailments became a business when she began selling her homemade skin products at local farmers’ markets in 2012. A sufferer of eczema and dry, sensitive skin, she knows better than anyone that the right products can do wonders for the skin. In her case, they were products she created and tested herself—free from harsh and harmful chemicals. “I started making products for myself personally before I even thought about starting a business with it,” LeMasney explains. “When I hit 40, my skin became very dry and insatiable and I developed a sensitivity to all moisturizers.” She believed that the unnecessary chemicals found in the products were the culprit and decided to cut them out entirely in favor of a natural, homemade solution. “After a year of experiments, the body and face scrub was born. People that were using the scrub loved it, so I created three more—a lip scrub, hand scrub and cuticle oil.”

Could Integrative Medicine be the Answer? by Adriana Moise
W
e are fortunate to live in a country with exceptional acute care. Our trauma hospitals have the best physicians and capabilities of treating the most complicated and life threatening conditions. We pride ourselves on advanced medical and pharmaceutical research. Despite these wins, the field of integrative medicine is on the rise. Over the past decade, the incidence of childhood chronic diseases like asthma, obesity and learning disorders has increased by at least 13 percent. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, if we do not reverse the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes, the current generation of young people could be first in the U.S. to “live sicker and die younger” than their parents. The use of psychotropic—affecting the mind, emotions or behavior—medications in U.S. children is also rapidly increasing. At the start of life, studies show that U.S. infants can have more than 200 toxic chemicals in their umbilical cord blood. This is a somber horizon for our children. Today, parents are looking to educate themselves to find answers to all these problems through more natural modalities that ensure not

only quality of life, but optimal health for future generations. Integrative medicine may be the answer. It is a blend of conventional and alternative treatments, with emphasis on mind-body connection and the innate ability the body has to heal itself. What makes an integrative holistic pediatrician different is that they listen. Parents sometimes have concerns or questions that they may be reluctant to address, for fear of being judged or not taken seriously. An integrative practitioner understands that the more they know about the patient—both mentally and emotionally—the better they can be treated. The practitioner will implement, when appropriate, mind-body techniques, botanical treatments, food as medicine, nutraceutical treatments and homeopathy, along with allopathic treatments. While all physicians go through similar training and follow a univer-

sal “standard of care”, medicine in the way it is currently practiced is at a crossroads. Our old model of practicing medicine might need to be revised. Integrative care is now part of big health institutions in this country and slowly being introduced in medical residency programs, but the road will be long and arduous. do for the body to promote health and wellness. We should drink half of our body weight in ounces per day—it’s that simple. Commit to getting that much water every single day, especially in the hot summer months.
What Should I Eat?
Don’t starve yourself.
by Daniele Hargenrader
I
t is a question that we ask ourselves on a daily basis: “What should I eat?” It doesn’t have to be complicated. Overthinking things can often be one of the worst practices, as it often leads to inaction instead of making progress toward our goals. These simple principles will help anyone learn how to confidently make the important recurring choice of what to eat to live a healthy lifestyle.
Whole foods.
Eat a diet that mostly consists of whole foods that are organic. Whole foods are foods that grow from the Earth and are not processed into something that is unrecognizable from its natural state. Some examples are vegetables, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, nut and seed butters with only one ingredient, beans, organic or pastured eggs, wild-caught fish, organic chicken and grass-fed beef. Great places to shop for these ingredients are local farmer’s markets, community gardens and grocery stores that cater to health-conscious shoppers. With just the ingredients listed, the possibil-

ities are only limited by imagination and a willingness to try new things.
Consistency.
Don’t skip breakfast, or any other meals. It is so important to make sure that no more than four hours go by without eating something. Whether the goal is to lose body fat, gain muscle or to maintain current levels of health, the human body needs consistency. Consistency lets the body know that it will be getting the nutrients it needs on a regular basis, not randomly and sporadically—which is confusing to the body, creates a chaotic internal environment and is a perfect recipe for holding on to stubborn body fat.
Water, water, water. This is something that cannot be stressed enough. Water is the only liquid that hydrates the human body—not coffee, not soda, not juice. It is free, and it is arguably the most important thing one can
www.NABuxMont.com
One of the worst things that we can do to our bodies is intense calorie restriction. It is detrimental to the human body and its internal environment, and will never help with fat loss. The human body consists of many interacting systems that work to keep us alive and well, and the only fuel that keeps those systems going is the food we eat and the water we drink. No human should be eating 1,200 calories a day. This is especially true if exercise is being added in addition to changing dietary habits. If someone eats 1,200 calories (which is already perceived by the body as starvation mode), then exercises and burns off 400 more calories, the body is left with about 800 calories to perform all of the functions that it needs to perform every day. This is not only not sustainable, but extremely harmful. In this state, the body does not lose fat, but rather precious muscle mass. The one thing that brings all of these recommendations together is a plan. Sit down, write it out and refer to it as often as necessary to stay on track and keep moving forward. Healthy eating is a choice. Give up the excuses and use that ultimate power of choice to create a happy, healthy future. Keep Kids Germ-Free This Summer by Renata Myers Touch screens

hether playing indoors or out, online or off, germs accumulate everywhere kids touch. Keep an eye on these places that carry hidden germs and take the following simple steps to keep kids healthy all summer break.
Video game controllers
Disconnect from the game console and use a vacuum cleaner with the appropriate attachment or a dry cloth to remove all visible particles. Then swab with a well-wrung-out, pre-moistened disinfecting wipe.
We know how to change the tablet to “kid mode”, however it is also important to keep kids safe by cleaning and disinfecting these devices. Use a dry cloth to remove all visible particles. Then, clean with a scratch-free product designed for electronics.
Bathroom door handles
There are countless germs on bathroom door handles, and many people will jump through hoops to avoid even touching them. Instead of turning into an acrobat in order to stay germfree, remember to regularly disinfect handles and keep the whole family healthier.
Keeping toys clean
When an infant or toddler finishes playing with a toy, take it from the
INVISALIGN Mercury Free Zirconium Implants Non-Metal Restorations
play area and place it in a bin marked “Dirty Toys”. After the toys are cleaned, place them in a bin marked “Clean Toys”. Place dirty toys in a bucket of warm, soapy water and let them soak for five minutes. Regular dish soap is fine. Scrub toys to loosen dirt and remove germs. Use a brush on hardto-reach areas. Rinse toys carefully to remove all soap residue. Wash cloth toys in the washing machine on the hot water cycle. Hard plastic toys can be washed in a dishwasher. Wash battery operated toys by hand. Animals as Medicine by Julie Ann Allender
A
nimal-assisted therapy—also known as pet therapy— brings a lot of questions to mind. Many people think it means working “on” animals. It is not unusual to have a new patient call and ask if they can schedule an appointment to “fix” their dog or cat. Pet therapy is the term used most often. For 30 years it was done quietly, as the U.S. has made a habit of avoiding the use of animals publicly—for fear of the animal acting out or leaving a mess. Rentals often list “no pets” as a requirement of renting, and animals are banned from restaurants for fear of health issues. A trip abroad will show countries that are much less germophobic, allowing animals in many session at 4-18-14.pdf 1 5/21/14 10:55 AM public places. Thankfully, this attitude is MJ_Wholeness.pdf 1 4/18/14 8:43 AM beginning to catch on in America. There
are programs that teach reading to elementary school children by having the child read aloud to a pet therapy dog. Animals are used to sniff out cancers and have been found to be more accurate than much of the fancy medical equipment. Dogs visit child care centers, senior programs and health care facilities helping to spread love and healing. They have been linked to a decrease in depression, illnesses going into remission and linked to medical improvements—decreasing the need for medications. Horses are used to help rehabilitate prisoners who were once considered unreachable. Inmates are given dogs to foster, learning the value of caring for someone totally dependent on them. Special needs children and
adults can learn to readjust to the mainstream with the help of therapy dogs. In therapy, it isn’t uncommon to suggest the use of the family pet to help children overcome fears, such as sleeping in the dark. Dogs are used as pet therapy and service animals to help the disabled lead more normal lives. They can be trained to pick things up for a person in a wheel chair, open doors or just fill the lonely void. They are now available with a doctor’s prescription for medical and mental health conditions, and can be certified as service dogs or pet therapy dogs. Establishments are required to allow the service dog to accompany the owner. A pet therapy dog may not be given all the same protection as a service dog, but some establishments will recognize them. Animal-assisted therapy is not new, but the terminology is. Families often have the best drug available to them and don’t even know it—their pets. Julie Ann Allender, EDD, is a licensed psychologist practicing with the use of animal-assisted therapy in Sellersville. Connect with her at 215799-2220 or PetTherapyParadise Park.com. Ernie came to them at age 4 and has always loved to jump in and swim alongside his owners. “Ernie’s claim to fame is fetching two tennis balls at once,” says Prause. “He wasn’t allowed in the pool at his former home, and now revels in taking a cooling dip after his twice-a-day walks.” Maria Schultz, author of How to SUP with Your Pup, enjoys stand up paddleboarding with her Australian shepherds, Riley and Kona, on rivers near her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She and Riley learned together in the living room. “I brought the board home and taught Riley how to hop on and off, where to sit or lie on the board, and to relax,” she relates. “I forgot the living room floor stood still. Riley was surprised when he got on the board on the river to find that it moved.” Riley was a good sport about it; within a week, he knew how to ride along. Kona took several months to get the hang of it. “Have patience, make it fun and all positive,” Schultz advises. “Know what motivates your dog. Riley works for food, Kona for praise.” For the more adventurous, Loews Coronado Bay Resort, in San Diego, offers one-hour surfing lessons for canine guests. Taught by Coronado Surfing Academy instructors, the only requirement is that a dog enjoys water. Of course, board shorts and a bandana are also provided so that Fido gets the full surfer dude experience. Enjoying warm weather and cool water with man’s best friend provides perfect fun for these dog days of summer. Learn more at CanineWatersports.com. Sandra Murphy writes from Missouri. DOG GONE SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS by Sandra Murphy
F
irst, check if area community pools allow dogs for special sessions. Many offer canine swims as fundraisers during off-season periods. Make sure the pet is sociable and wears a life jacket. The best swimmers include breeds used in water rescue or retrieval, such as the Newfoundland, Labrador retriever, Portuguese water dog, poodle and spaniel, as opposed to those with shorter snouts and airways. The stocky bodies and shorter legs of Scotties and dachshunds are also less conducive to water play. Dr. Jules Benson, vice president of Veterinary Services at Petplan Pet Insurance, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, gives three key safety tips: Be alert for signs of tiredness, like trouble staying afloat or struggling to catch their breath; watch for vomiting, diarrhea or fever due to harmful bacteria in some waterways; and don’t let dogs drink from the ocean. Ingested salt water can unbalance electrolytes and lead to dehydration, brain damage, kidney failure and even death. Pet expert Eileen Proctor recommends dabbing sunscreen on pet noses and ears before swimming and putting on the dog’s life jacket before going into, on or near the water. Always ensure that dogs are well-trained to come when called and leave found items and to take a break to rehydrate and rest. Supervise swimming dogs closely and make sure they aren’t drinking the water. If a dog hesitates to enter the water, leave his non-retractable leash on to reassure him he has assistance if needed, and stay in the pool with him. Establish a cue for entering and leaving the pool and use it before the dog overtires. Don’t allow a pet to climb the pool’s ladder to exit because a paw could slip, causing injury or panic. When boating, pull into a secluded area with no running propellers, active paddling or underwater snags, and keep the pet on a non-retractable lead or trained to swim close by. Rinse fur immediately after every swim to remove chlorine, bacteria, dirt or salt, and then dry the dog’s inner and outer ears.
