nahata Yoga and Wellness Center is currently accepting students for two different programs: a Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) program, to be held August 12 to 15, and a 200-hour YTT program, beginning September 10. The 200-hour YTT will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, every second weekend of the month, through May 2017. In the Prenatal YTT program, students will learn the anatomy and physiology of the growing fetus and the resulting changes in the mother’s body during each trimester. Topics covered include fetal development, physiological and hormonal changes in the mother’s body, as well as possible body responses to these changes. Appropriate asana, assisting, pranayama, sounding and meditation will be covered for each trimester, including postnatal. Pregnancy discomforts during each stage will be explored along with ways to use yoga, nontraditional methods and traditional techniques to help alleviate these situations. Students will leave confident, qualified and comfortable to teach prenatal yoga in a variety of settings. Early-bird pricing of $600 is available until July 10. The 200-hour YTT program trainees will learn everything needed to teach all levels of Hatha Yoga in accordance with Yoga Alliance standards, but with Anahata’s unique emphasis on the self-inquiry-based approach to yoga. As one of only 16 Kripalu-Affiliated yoga studios worldwide, Anahata teaches an introspective, Kripalu-influenced, explorationbased approach to yoga. The YTT will feature electives on the teaching team’s specialties: Teaching Beginner’s Yoga, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, Ayurveda, the Chakra system and finding your voice as a teacher. Applicants for the 200-hour YTT are suggested to have at least one year of yoga experience with a commitment to a personal yoga practice, a compassionate heart and a genuine desire to take this transformational journey. Pricing ranges between $2,100 and $2,300, and a variety of payment options are available. “Our trainings continue to evolve and expand as our community grows. But we are still, and always will be, a small studio at heart. The personal relationship we have with our students is very important, and will remain so, even as we broaden our offerings,” says Kathleen Tooley, Anahata’s founder and lead teacher. Location: 703 Harleysville Pk., Harleysville. For more information and to register, call 215-740-1354 or visit AnahataYoga Wellness.com. See ads, pages 8 and 47.

Solstice Expo & Holistic Fair in New Hope

T

he Society for Metaphysical Enlightenment invites participants to tune up their bodies, minds and spirits and experience the love of higher consciousness at the Eighth Annual Solstice Expo and Holistic Fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 18 and 19, at the New Hope Eagle Firehouse. Special guest presentations will be made by Kimberly Uhl and Arthur Gutkin. Uhl, an intuitive counselor who facilitates healing of the mind, body and spirit, will present an interactive demonstration lecture on a Matrix Energetics healing/releasing technique. Gutkin, a certified NGH hypnotherapist, will present a seminar, “How Our Past Lives Can Resolve Our Present-Day Issues.” Other guest speakers are scheduled every hour. “This is our eighth year, and each time we do it, it gets richer and more diverse. If you haven’t yet experienced one of our shows, we hope this year will be the year,” states organizer Tony Kenton. “This is a happy, joyful, festive, fun event of like-minded people of a high consciousness. Feel the energy similar to an adult version of the flower-power sixties.” Area energy healers and practitioners, along with mind/body therapists and holistic practitioners, will offer massage and stress management techniques and many more healing modalities. Artwork, jewelry and crystals will also be displayed for purchase, along with a natural food court.

John of God Crystal Bed Healing at Greenshire reenshire Arts Consortium will host a free introduction describing the work of John of God, a world-renowned spiritual healer from Brazil, at 7 p.m., June 9. Elaine Berk, psychotherapist, will present a detailed description of her healing experiences with him, and will also describe his Crystal Bed therapy, which was developed to aid people in their healing journeys. Berk will be offering individual, 90-minute Crystal Bed healings from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., June 20. Crystal Bed therapy opens, clears and balances the energy system, promoting emotional, physical and spiritual healing. Individuals lie underneath seven precision crystals that radiate light, color and energy over each chakra. Many people report an enhanced sense of peace, health and well-being. Sessions include: support to set healing intentions; 60 minutes on the Crystal Bed; high-vibration water and ceremonial music used for release and transformation; and prayers used by John of God. “Those interested in John of God’s work, but unable to travel to Brazil, will experience some of the unique opportunities through my talk and from healing on the Crystal Bed,” emphasizes Berk. “Helping others has been a connecting thread throughout my career, bringing the most significant healing to individuals. Through my outreach to others, I endeavor to make a difference in the world. That is why sharing John of God’s work is very special.” Location: 3620 Sterner Mill Rd., Quakertown. Call 215-538-0976 or email Info@ GreenshireArts.org to reserve your place at the free introduction or to make an appointment for Crystal Bed Healing. See calendar, page 39.

Creating art in his Indio, California, home studio comprises a personal form of meditation for Dominic Piperata; it allows him to step out of the world, exit a sense of time and become completely immersed in the creative process. He explains, “My lifelong fascination with art began at a young age. Despite studying at a California art school, I consider myself primarily self-taught. Whether painting, drawing, working in mixed media or with photography, I find joy in creating it all.” Most of Piperata’s 25-year career has been spent working in the art world, but not primarily as a professional artist. He also likes to share his expertise by consulting with gifted emerging artists on their career development and marketing strategies. He consults with arts organizations, fine art photographers and boutique film companies, as well. View the artist’s portfolio at Arts-Group.com.

eventbriefs Reflexology Practitioner Program Hosts Monthly Open Houses

T

racy McGovern, owner, practitioner and instructor at Essential Connections Reflexology & Reiki, will offer a Reflexology Practitioner Program (150-hour foundations course), with both weekend and evening options, beginning in fall, 2016. To educate those interested in the program, Reflexology students she will host open houses Dawn Seader (L) and Anita Heft to offer time to meet the instructors, chat with graduates of the programs, get details and ask questions, at 7 p.m., June 29; 7 p.m., July 28; and 11 a.m., August 20, in Ottsville. The open houses are free, but require registration. The practitioner program is designed in two parts to allow students to begin working in the field as soon as possible, while also having the chance to complete a full, 300-hour program—the national standard. The program is dedicated to facilitating practitioners with a firm foundation and knowledge that will empower them to welcome the intuitive side of holistic practice. It is about producing practitioners with the critical thinking and openness to be able to grow into their own abilities. Discussion and information regarding the business side of a holistic practice will be part of the program, useful to those planning to create their own practice, work for others or even apply their skills to friends and family. “Truly, reflexology is a tool of empowerment—empowering the human body to seek its full potential and empowering people to reconnect, understand and participate in their own healing and wellness potential,” says McGovern. “The simplicity of reflexology shrouds the near-magical effectiveness of its function. The awareness and growth that comes from learning or receiving reflexology always seems to exceed all beginning expectations.” Essential Connections Reflexology & Reiki serves the local area to help people reach their full potential of health, utilizing traditional foot reflexology and intuitive reiki as well as a few new additions: Tibetan healing modalities, head and neck, reflex therapy and neuro-foot reflex therapy. Locations: The Room at Meadowbrook, 4089 Durham Rd., Ottsville, and Quakertown Integrated Health Center, 600 W. Broad St., Quakertown. Our Hypnosis practice encompasses traditional services, plus: ◆ Past Age, Life and Between Lives Counseling ◆ Akashic Record Travel Resolving Physical and Emotional Issues Arthur Gutkin dreamt four years ago that he would awake as a Traveler of the Akashic Record and a Healer. During meditation, Art travels the Akashic Record and experiences memories of his clients, from Past Ages, Lives, the Womb, and the formative years. These memories, many repressed, often unlock the causes of long term illnesses, both physical and emotional. Art’s unique form of hypnosis,“Integrated Regression Healing,” helps adults overcome those debilitating memories. Additionally, Art lays hands on people who have suffered pain for years, who then, within minutes, feel relief and greater range of motion.

Art has successfully Laid Hands on People with... ◆ Cancer ◆ Multiple Sclerosis ◆ Muscular Dystrophy ◆ Depression ◆ Chronic Pain ◆ Arthritis ◆ Paralysis ◆ Intestinal Issues ◆ Many Other Diseases Art, personally trained by a world renowned Past Life Hypnotherapist, specializes in Past Life, Age, Womb and Between Lives Therapy. Art’s clients meet Guides and Judges after learning life lessons while traveling their Past Lives and Between Lives. Art, when needed during Womb, Past Life, and Between Life Travels, combines Hands-on Healing with his unique Regression Therapy releasing physical and emotional issues associated with earlier negative Karma. “Distance Healing from Art was extremely beneficial to me. The MS symptoms of fatigue and muscle pain/cramping I had were greatly diminished. This after just the first session! The postural orthostatic tachycardia condition I had was made better and almost completely eliminated after just 3 sessions. I found my cognitive function to be better as well and even a sensitivity to magnesium stearate was basically eliminated. I very much recommend this form of healing energy from Art to anyone looking for a good ‘boost’ and relief from various symptoms.” -Jeanette Raynor, Rhode Island “15 years ago I had a car accident and was never pain free until Art laid hands on my back for less than five minutes. On his way out of my house, he saw my dog, Buster, who was dying from brain disease. He laid hands on Buster. Within a day, Buster was acting like a puppy.” - Ray Adkins, Pottstown, PA

eventbriefs The Room at Meadowbrook Opens Its Doors with a Summer Event

Dr. Susan Burger’s Vitality Center

T

he Room at Meadowbrook will host an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 25 to celebrate its new facility, located on the grounds of its partner organization, Meadowbrook Animal Healing, in Ottsville. This family-friendly event is open to the community. Locals are encouraged to drop by, rain or shine, to enjoy food and music, enter the raffle, pick up free class passes and walk through the flower gardens to visit with the horse, PJ goats and other animals who live onsite. Resident “Room” instructors Diane Alex, Erin Range, Tracy McGovern, Joanna Chodorowska, Sharon Cristofalo, Lisa Potts and Michelle McInnis will be onsite to meet prospective and current students. The Room was developed by Sue Walski and Lyn Hicks as a place for the healing and expressive arts for both people and animals in a peaceful, inspired setting. The program calendar includes classes and workshops elaborating on the benefits of movement and creativity, and features healing modalities such as aharaj yoga, dance, yoga, tai chi, feminine health workshops, reflexology, qigong, reiki and jin shin jyutsu for all levels of awareness. “We see this as a healing space. It’s a place for people to come and take classes, and hopefully be inspired to use the space to hold their own programs and workshops as time goes on,” says Walski, a veterinarian and animal holistic healing practitioner who will teach classes on holistic pet care. Hicks, a women’s empowerment educator and author, describes The Room this way: “Our goal is to educate the path to personal power and freedom through the healing and expressive arts for people and animals, so they may find more health, vitality and well-being for themselves and their families.” The Room is available to all that are inspired to educate and share about their art of healing. Location: 4089 Durham Rd., Ottsville. For more information, call Lyn Hicks at 215-813-4073 or visit TheRooomAt Meadowbrook.com. See ad, page 12.

Live Comedy Evokes Trust and Empathy

R

esearch from the UK University of Surrey has found that witnessing live comedy increases emotional interaction and bonding between the spectators and performer and enhances a general feeling of trust and intimacy among participants through the shared experience. Published in the journal Comedy Studies, the study was conducted by doctoral candidate Tim Miles, who analyzed surveys and interviews of audience members, as well as comedians, including some well-known performers. Miles found that comics and audiences connected through sharing of admiration and empathy. Bonds also formed as the audience began to identify with the observations and experiences of the comic. “Comedy has often been seen to be a bit frivolous, but it’s actually something really important. My work looking at comedians and comedy audiences has shown how live, stand-up comedy fulfills a need for feelings of truth, trust, empathy and intimacy between people, which is really important in a society where many people often complain about feeling isolated,” says Miles.

A peaceful, inspiring center connecting spirituality and community through classes, workshops and more.

Awe and Wonder Prime Physical Health

T

wo related studies from the University of California, Berkeley, suggest that the act of admiring the beauty of nature with awe and wonder can decrease inflammation in the body. More than 200 adults reported their experiences of emotions on a particular day, including amusement, awe, compassion, joy, contentment and pride. Samples of the subjects’ gum and cheek tissues were analyzed for cytokines, and the researchers found those that cited emotions of awe, wonder and amazement had the lowest levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). UC Berkeley professor and co-author of the research Dacher Keltner, Ph.D., says, “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions—a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art—have a direct influence upon health and life expectancy.”

Ashwagandha Pumps Up Testosterone

L

ow testosterone levels can be problematic for men as they age. Fortunately, Mother Nature produces her own form of testosterone booster: the herb ashwagandha. Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition tested 57 men between the ages of 18 and 50. They were divided into two groups—one was given 300 milligrams of the herbal extract twice a day for eight weeks; the other ingested a placebo for the same period. Both groups underwent supervised muscle training programs for the duration of the study. The men that took the ashwagandha had significantly higher levels of circulating testosterone compared to the placebo group. The ashwagandha group also experienced an increase in muscle mass in the chest and arms, yielding an average arm muscle size of 8.6 centimeters, compared to the placebo group’s 5.3 centimeters. Those men in the ashwagandha group also exhibited faster reductions of creatine kinase, a marker for the type of muscle fiber injury that occurs during strenuous exercise, following workouts.

E-Cigarettes Produce Free Radicals

E

lectronic cigarette use, or vaping, is on the rise as many consider it a healthier alternative to smoking. However, in a study published in the American Chemical Society journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, researchers from the Penn State University College of Medicine report that e-cigarettes produce considerable levels of reactive free radicals created by the high-temperature heating coils that warm up the nicotine solution. Dr. John Richie, a professor at Penn State and senior author of the research, says, “The identification of these radicals in the aerosols means that we can’t just say e-cigarettes are safe because they don’t contain tobacco. They are potentially harmful.” The researchers found that levels of free radicals in e-cigarettes are between 100 to 1,000 times less than the levels produced by tobacco cigarettes, still making them a better choice than traditional cigarettes although they still carry risk. Richie explains, “The levels of radicals that we’re seeing are more than what you might get from a heavily air-polluted area, but less than what you might find in cigarette smoke.” Previous research has found that e-cigarette smoke also contains aldehydes that can potentially cause cellular and tissue damage.

More Retailers Ban Bee-Toxic Products Amidst the growing pollinator crisis and due to public pressure, Aldi Süd, the German supermarket chain with stores in the U.S., has become the first major European retailer to ban pesticides toxic to bees, including the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam, from fruits and vegetables produced for their stores. Starting in January, Aldi produce suppliers have had to ensure their cultivation practices exclude eight pesticides identified as toxic to bees. Other retailers in the U.S. and Europe are also beginning to shun bee-toxic pesticides. Home Depot will no longer use the class of pesticides known as neonics on 80 percent of its flowering plants; completing the phase-out in 2018. Lowe’s is ending the sale of products containing neonicotinoid pesticides within 48 months. Smaller retailers are also working on removing neonics and other toxic pesticides from their shelves. The science has become increasingly clear that pesticides, working individually or synergistically, play a critical role in the ongoing decline of honeybees and other pollinators. Bees in the U.S. and Europe have seen unprecedented losses over the last decade, and bee-toxic pesticides like neonicotinoids have consistently been implicated as a major contributing factor. New Healthy Building Standard The WELL Building Standard, administered by the International WELL Building Institute, is the world’s first development criterion to focus exclusively on human health and wellness. It marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research, harnessing the built environment as a vehicle to support human health and well-being. Pioneered by the Delos company and the culmination of seven years of research in partnership with leading scientists, doctors, architects and wellness thought leaders, WELL is grounded in a body of medical research that explores the connection between the buildings where people spend more than 90 percent of their time and the health and wellness impacts on occupants. It sets performance requirements in seven categories: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and state of mind. WELL-certified spaces can help foster improvements in the nutrition, fitness, moods, sleep patterns and performance of occupants. WELL is independently certified by Green Business Certification Inc., which administers the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and associated professional credentialing program. Bye-Bye Dye

Mars and Others Abandoning Artificial Colors Mars Inc., the maker of many candies, chewing gum flavors and other food products, is phasing out artificial food dyes over the next five years. The decision came as a response to growing customer demand, says CEO Grant F. Reid. Nestlé, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s have also started eliminating artificial dyes from their products due to calls for more natural ingredients. Common shades of red 40 and yellow 5 are presently ubiquitous, as per capita production of artificial coloring approved for use in food has increased more than five-fold since the 1950s. According to a study of supermarket labels by the Center for Science in Public Interest, an estimated 90 percent of childoriented candies, fruit snacks, drink mixes and powders contain artificial colors, and many parents are concerned about their potential impact on developing brains. Several studies have scrutinized dyes’ possible link to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other effects on children’s behavior. When a study by a group of British scientists suggested a link between the consumption of certain food dyes and hyperactivity in kids, Europe and the UK began requiring food with artificial dyes to carry warning labels. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to maintain that no causal relationship exists between color additives and hyperactivity in children, and doesn’t require warning labels.

Six-Hour Workday Reaps Benefits Many Americans work 50 hours a week or more because they think they’ll get more done and reap the benefits later. However, according to a metastudy published in The Lancet, people that clock a 55hour week have a 33 percent greater risk of stroke and 13 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than those that maintain a 35- to 40-hour work week. Data from 25 studies that monitored the health of 600,000 people from the U.S., Europe and Australia for up to 8.5 years were analyzed. Paul Kelley, of Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, notes that even a traditional nine-tofive workday is at odds with peoples’ internal body clocks, contributing to sleep deprivation. Now Sweden is moving toward a standard six-hour workday, with some businesses having already implemented the change. Linus Feldt, CEO of Stockholm app developer Filimundus, reports that the shift has maintained productivity while decreasing staff conflicts, because people are happier and better rested. Several Toyota service centers in Gothenburg that switched to a six-hour day 13 years ago also report happier staff, a lower turnover rate and increased ease in enticing new hires. A Swedish retirement home has embarked on a yearlong experiment to compare the costs and benefits of a shorter working day.

Safely Keep Winged Visitors Away from Outdoor Events Warding off summertime mosquitoes and flies to maintain outdoor fun is especially important given the new disease potential of the mosquito-borne Zika and West Nile viruses. Here are some naturally protective measures. Remove stale, standing water outside the home— including swimming pool covers, clogged rain gutters and buckets—and turn over clay pots and plastic containers, as they all can be prime mosquito-breeding spots, suggests the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Alternatively, a toxin-free backyard pond or water garden can be stocked with mosquito fish like gambusia that feed on and consume large quantities of insect larvae. Avoid applying potent perfumes, soaps and lotions prior to an outdoor event, because such scents attract insects. It always helps to wear light, long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect more skin. Grow plants with odors mosquitoes don’t like. Earth Easy.com suggests citronella, horsemint (aka bee balm), marigolds, ageratum (floss flowers) and catnip. Wellness Mama.com also likes lavender, thyme, lemongrass, anything in the mint family and even basil; rub fresh or dried leaves on the skin or apply lavender flowers or oil, especially on hot spots (neck, underarms or behind ears). Use a non-toxic, plastic-free insect-repelling band for kids. Avoid conventional insect repellents, as many contain diethyltoluamide (DEET), one of the top five contaminants of U.S. waterways. Chemicals rinse off into shower and bath drains during later wash-ups.

t may at first seem unlikely that organic gardening and pest control could be related, but the link is obvious to Daniel Owusuh. The founder of Greenway Pest Control, Owusuh began his career in organic agriculture, studying agriculture in Israel before returning to the U.S. as a research fellow at the renowned Rodale Institute Research Center in Kutztown. With a focus on the soil/plant/human relationship, he was dismayed to learn that a traditional pest control company had been contracted to treat his apartment with toxic pesticides, and he realized that the same principles and methods that allow crops to thrive without harmful chemicals could be utilized to keep homes and businesses pest-free, as well. When he learned that an environmentally friendly option did not exist, he obtained his pesticide license and studied the business from the inside, learning the methodology that would allow him to apply the principles of organic agriculture to structural pest control, ultimately opening his own business in 2007. “Similar to holistic medicine, where patients agree to healthy diet and lifestyle choices, green pest control works best when the customer is willing to follow simple common sense guidelines in addition to incorporating non-toxic products proven to repel or control common household and office pests,” says Owusuh. “Simply making a space less hospitable to pests goes a long way toward solving the problem and reduces the toxic load to our planet and to us, its inhabitants.” Of course, knowing what changes to make is the key, and with more than 20 years of experience, Owusuh is able to assess the problem and offer environmentally friendly solutions, using only natural insecticides, pesticides and repellents safe for use around humans and pets. Simple strategies might include structural modification—sealing gaps between walls and around pipes and doors—and otherwise blocking interior access. Other methods call upon Owusuh’s knowledge of insect behavior, like understanding that eliminating visible ants is ineffective unless the colony’s queen is also eliminated. Setting up a bait system that targets the colony and its queen, along with the use of natural deterrents, will eradicate the problem while preventing re-infestation. Greenway Pest Control uses inspection, observation and intervention, the three-stage Integrated Pest Management (IPM) method recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, to develop comprehensive customized programs

that address the unique needs of each client, both affordably and effectively. Using botanical extracts, special soaps, herbs and other natural treatments that are toxic to pests, but not Founder Daniel Owusuh (right) and to humans, pets technician Jack Merkel (left) or the planet, Owusuh’s team can safely eliminate virtually any pests, including spiders, roaches, millipedes/centipedes, ants, silverfish, fleas and bees. They can even address rodent, termite and bedbug issues. The company also offers a home inspection program for real estate buyers and sellers. “Living healthy today is about more than just eating right and exercising. We help maintain a healthy, pest-free living and working space for families and pets, customers and staff, while also protecting ourselves and the environment from toxicity,” says Owusuh. “Always remember that healthy soil produces healthy plants, leading to human health.” Greenway Pest Control is licensed to serve all of Pennsylvania. merican fatherhood has evolved considerably in the last 50 years. While dads used to be kept out of the delivery room, today, more than 90 percent of new fathers are present for their children’s birth, reflected in MenCare Advocacy’s State of the Worlds’ Fathers. However, being there early on does not necessarily define the scope of future involvement. Overcoming obstacles that might keep men from being the “high-five” dads they and their family need them to be is key. Involved fathers benefit children. Most research on child development has focused on how mothers influence their children, but in recent decades, society has “discovered” fathers. In many studies, pioneering Psychologist Ross Parke, Ph.D., professor emeritus of University of California, Riverside, and others have conclusively shown that children of more-involved dads are better at solving puzzles, score higher on cognitive skills tests, do better in school, are more likely to go to college, are more empathetic, manage their emotions better, have fewer behavior problems, are less likely to suffer from depression or mental illness and are less likely to break laws or become teen parents. Fathering tip: Never miss an opportunity to change a diaper, play with the kids, read stories together or simply ask them about their day.

NABuxMont.com

Equal workplace policies matter. The U.S. is the only economically advanced country that has no nationally mandated paid maternity leave policy and is absent a national paternity leave policy, paid or unpaid. When men don’t get time off to learn basic parenting skills, it’s harder for them to stay engaged later. In 1977, 41 percent of women and 35 percent of men in dual-earner couples reported work-family life conflicts. Today, the figures are 47 percent and 60 percent, respectively, according to the Families and Work Institute’s ongoing National Study of the Changing Workforce. Parenting tip: Advocate for national, paid parenting leave policies for men and women starting with local employers. It benefits both families and companies. Studies by Stanford University, the Families and Work Institute, Gallup, Inc. and others have found that companies with family-friendly benefits enjoy more loyal employees, better morale, lower turnover, fewer arbitrary sick days, higher levels of customer service and higher shareholder returns—all of which contribute to their bottom line. Both genders can be naturally nurturing. Certainly, women are biologically adapted for giving birth and breastfeeding, but Parke found that caring new dads typically cuddle, coo, giggle, rock and feed their babies just as much as new mothers. One hurdle men

face is that they usually have to return to work sooner, and their natural nurturing skills can get rusty, while moms’ get sharper. Opportunity and practice are the biggest predictors of meaningful connections with children. Fathering tip: Don’t assume that a partner knows more. Whatever a mother knows, she learned by making mistakes, and that’s the best way for fathers to learn, too. Be open to complementary expertise. A dad with a mate that praises and supports him will be far more confident and engaged with his child than one with a partner that criticizes him. Parenting tip: No one likes to feel incompetent, so when offering dad advice, do it in a nonthreatening way that supports and compliments his improving skills over time. It may mean adjusting personal standards a bit. Dad should take pride in practicing his unique rapport with offspring. Instead of letting mom pluck a crying or smelly baby from his arms, he can try, “Honey, I’ve got this.” End-running the legal system after divorce. For some 30 years, the default decision in divorce cases has been to award the mother primary physical custody, with limited visitation for the father. More states are now moving toward a presumption of 50-50 physical custody, but it’s not the norm. Therefore, many divorced dads may feel disconnected from their children and suppressed in their parenting role moving forward. Fathering tip: Never give up. Children need their dad in their life and vice-versa. It’s critical to stay in touch. In person is best; phone, email and Skype are decent fallbacks. Make time together feel meaningful as well as normal, instead of falling into a “Disneyland dad” syndrome of trying to make every moment a party. Practice harmonious communications with the ex. The biggest known predictor of children’s future mental and emotional health is how well their parents get along. Separated parents don’t have to be friends, but they do need to acknowledge both parents’ importance to the children and treat each other respectfully. Armin Brott is the author of eight bestselling books on fatherhood, including The Expectant Father and The New Father. Learn more at MrDad.com.

Weight training and running are popular forms of exercise for many guys. How does that impact their flexibility, and how can massage help support them in those practices? Massage therapy is very beneficial to men that lift weights, run or participate in other cardiovascular exercise because it prevents and alleviates restrictions in the muscles. “Restrictions” can originate from various injuries, improper posture or repetitive motions, as in the case of weightlifting.

NABuxMont.com

Massage also helps to prevent what’s called delayed onset muscle soreness, so the body can heal faster with massage than with rest alone.

What benefits can men expect from greater flexibility? Men can gain improved range of motion and better posture, which affect health on many levels, including digestion, mood and, of course, appearance. Massage helps make the muscles more supple by helping to oxygenate with fresh blood. Think of tight muscles as a kink in a hose—when tight, the muscles can entrap blood vessels and nerves, creating pain. Massage helps to alleviate that. Massage combined with assisted stretching, whether it is sports stretching or Thai massage—which is what I incorporate into my practice—is even more beneficial. When someone else is stretching our bodies, we are able to stretch a bit further because our muscles are relaxed. With Thai massage we are also being massaged while being stretched, so the results are even more profound.

How many sessions do men need to attend before experiencing a noticeable difference? Everyone is unique. Results will depend on how long they have had their physical issues, whether they have any scar tissue, the amount of stress they

typically have and their compliance to self-care, particularly stretching and body awareness. But many have felt relief in one to two sessions. With weekly or biweekly sessions, many have had significant results within six to 10 sessions and continue with monthly or bimonthly maintenance.

What else do you want people to know? Our bodies are meant to move in several planes of movement. Many exercises, including walking, running, cycling and the elliptical, have us in only one repetitive plane of movement. These are all great ways to work out, but it is imperative to supplement with other modalities such as weight training, which by design, if done correctly, requires us to use our muscles in a balanced way. Stretching is the most important thing we can do to help prevent injuries. Massage and assisted stretching are exceptional in that they help us get to that place of flexibility so that we are able to more easily do it on our own. Also important is an understanding of “how and why” our bodies have reached their current states. I offer posture and flexibility workshops for individuals and for workplaces to help bring this understanding in a simple way, along with techniques that participants can use throughout their busy day.

Childrearing responsibilities often decrease in our 40s and 50s, affording more time and resources to invest in the quality of the relationship. Psychological and spiritual maturity also comes into play—the more deeply we know ourselves, the more able we are to communicate meaningfully with our partner. NABuxMont.com

What would you say is the biggest challenge for midlife couples in a longterm relationship? It’s vital to get out of the rut of recycling conflicts and predictable routines in order to liberate a new creativity. Creativity doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It might be a matter of giving a

new way to communicate a whirl or taking a walk together instead of watching TV. Ultimately, relationships only thrive when both people make an ongoing commitment to investing time and energy to explore their own creative nature. One may elect to learn to play a musical instrument, while the other might take up gardening. The only requirement is that we take on new activities that have the capacity to surprise us.

What tips do you have for those that are single during the second half of their life? Enjoy your singularity! Singlehood affords great opportunities. You can choose whether or not you wish to invest time and energy manifesting a mate. No law requires that everyone has to have an intimate relationship, but if you’d like to, go about the process consciously. First, work on learning to love yourself, because it’s wise not to depend on anyone else to do it for us. Second, figure out what we call your Three Absolute Yesses and Nos, the three most important qualities you want in a mate, and equally important, the three most important things you don’t want in a mate. It’s a good way to avoid mistakes.

Why do you call blame “the crack cocaine of relationships”? When you blame another person for something, you fire up adrenaline both in yourself and the other person. Adrenaline is manufactured by our bodies and is highly addictive. Blame also typically produces a defensive reaction, causing a harmful cycle of two-way criticism and defensiveness that can go on for years. One couple we counseled had been having essentially the same argument since their honeymoon 29 years earlier—so addicted to the adrenalized “cocaine” of blame that it had become a permanent feature of their relationship. The answer is for each person to take healthy responsibility for issues in the relationship and together seek ways to both break unhealthy habits and replace them with mutually satisfying ways of relating. SEVEN STEPS THROUGH THE STORM

Keila Gilbert of Alpha Center for Divorce Mediation Finds Compassion within Divorce by Sarah Grey

O

program to guide them through the divorce transition in constructive ways that help them move forward emotionally, financially and legally.

f all of life’s great transitions —parenthood, marriage, retirement— one of the most difficult is divorce. Divorce requires a great deal of compassion that too often is missing. That’s why Natural Awakenings sat down with Keila Gilbert of Alpha Center, an attorney mediator who specializes in guiding couples through the divorce process with compassion.

Is mediation for everyone?

How did you become a divorce mediator? I went through my own divorce about 20 years ago, and it was extremely painful. Instead of focusing on that pain and anger, though, I found a different way to channel my energy. I became a divorce attorney mediator in the hope of giving other couples a better experience than I had.

Twenty years later, you’re a pioneer in the field of divorce mediation. Can you tell us about how Alpha Center works? The biggest decision couples face is whether to divorce, but the secondbiggest decision is how to divorce. When we hear the word “divorce” we think of two attorneys battling to the death in court. So many people don’t even realize that there are other options. We offer couples a seven-step 24

BuxMont-Main Line Edition

Some divorces do need to go through the court system, such as when physical abuse is involved. In general, though, mediation is a more cooperative and compassionate choice for many couples. The Alpha Center also works to make it more affordable by charging a flat fee, so that couples are not racking up huge attorneys’ fees. We want this better alternative to be accessible to everyone.

What does it mean to offer a compassionate divorce process? Most divorcing couples go into the process with lots of emotions and very little knowledge. So our program is highly structured in a way that focuses on the future, not the past. We’re happy to refer them to therapists, but we try to step away from the emotions here so that both parties can put their energy into moving forward into the next stage of their lives. Divorce can be financially devastating, so we have financial and tax experts who work with our mediators to help couples increase their cash flow and avoid financial conflict. Also,

NABuxMont.com

when children are involved, a parenting mediator, who is a qualified therapist, works with the couple to negotiate a co-parenting agreement that minimizes the impact on children. We also do a lot of referrals to related services. On our website, we have a large directory of therapists, financial advisors, support groups and more, which we’ve vetted for quality.

What do you think is behind the epidemic of divorce? How did the divorce rate get to be so high? There are social, cultural and personal reasons for this trend. Women now have a greater level of freedom, education and opportunity than they had in the past. Prior to gaining these strengths, they were much more inclined to remain in an economically and socially dependent marriage due to lack of other options. Social mores have also changed, from stigmatizing divorced individuals to accepting them. When looking at the individual causes, you see people entering marriage too blindly and then failing to understand that good marriages take hard work. I’d love it if my services were needed less often. That’s why we also offer resources on our site about how to strengthen or save a marriage. We want to interrupt what I call the “marriage-go-round cycle”, which is when people divorce one partner only to date, marry, separate and divorce again. While 85 percent of our clients do complete the divorce mediation program, of the 15 percent who don’t, quite a few reconcile. Sometimes you see the light bulb go on when people realize they really can work together to save the marriage. Fifty percent of first marriages, 60 percent of second marriages and 70 percent of third marriages end in divorce. The lesson there is that people often do not learn from their mistakes, but rather blame their partner for the problems, and therefore continue to repeat their past behaviors. Also, subsequent marriages carry the added challenges of blended families.

Do you offer resources for recently divorced people? Yes. On our website we offer resources and ideas for people moving on after divorce. We help them understand what they need to make good decisions about life’s most important relationship. We’re also committed to helping newly single people find quality financial advice.

To that end, can you tell me more about the educational programs you offer? Education is such a powerful factor in making important life decisions. It’s an important part of what we do. We offer workshops for couples as well as for professionals. Recently we did a community workshop focused on “Mended, Blended and Extended Families”. We also offered one for professional couples counselors called “Marital Stress Management”.

It must be very energetically draining to be with people who are in conflict around the ending of a marriage. What do you do to fortify yourself spiritually and emotionally? There is no doubt that you can get “compassion fatigue” when you place yourself in the center of the strife of over 5,000 divorcing individuals over the course of 20 years, as I have. However, it is extremely rewarding to know how much you have changed the trajectory of their lives and their children’s lives, as compared to those who follow the unhealthy path of years of emotionally and financially draining litigation. I fortify myself by focusing on a healthy lifestyle and a strong meditation practice, and I rely on the support of my coworkers. I am especially blessed with my loving husband, children, extended family and friends. Also, I often retreat through my love of travel, reading, music and the many gifts of nature.

This is your life’s work. What has kept you in it, and what do you see for divorce in the future? It is my life’s work—but also my life’s passion. My original mission was to create an effective divorce mediation program and bring it to as many people as possible. That’s still true, but my work is now focused on training other attorneys to provide our program to divorcing couples throughout the nation. There are now 15 Alpha locations nationwide. As for the future of divorce, I do believe it will stabilize as a result of three factors. First, people are now delaying marriage to later years, so they are a bit wiser; second, they are entering marriage with more mutual respect and equal footing; third, there are many more resources available to support and encourage healthy marriages. There is one other factor that may continue to decrease divorce, and that is a trend to live together rather than marry, which is a much more prevalent norm in Europe.

How does your commitment to compassion play out in your everyday work at Alpha? I have deliberately surrounded myself with good people who share my passion and commitment to serving our clients during this very vulnerable time of their lives. Though I remain a

perfectly imperfect person, I feel that our work has left positive imprints on the lives of the many adults and children that we have been blessed to serve. Alpha Center for Divorce Mediation is headquartered in Doylestown and offers its divorce mediation program in multiple locations and online. directly as possible. The goal is to create a beautiful and respectful place to allow the body to degrade naturally and rejoin Earth’s elements, perpetuating the natural cycle of life and death, of dissolution and rebirth. The burial process uses what remains of life to regenerate new life. Unlike traditional cemeteries, Green Meadow prohibits practices that prevent natural reunion with the Earth, including burial vaults, metal caskets and chemical embalming. In their place they allow biodegradable caskets and cloth shrouds. Upright headstones are not permitted; however, ground-level fieldstone and other natural native rock markers are allowed. Maintenance of the grounds at Green Meadow also differs from traditional cemeteries. The meadow is planted with native wildflowers, eliminating the need for lawn care. Unlike conventional cemeteries, plots are not pre-assigned—new plots are selected in succession to recent burials. (Exceptions are made for families with existing sites.) This allows for less environmental disturbance of the meadow and maintains a peaceful, contiguous native wildflower landscape. Each season, Green Meadow invites volunteers from the community to help with turning the soil, cleaning and upkeep of the grounds. “It’s a wonderful way for people whose loved ones are here to connect with their memory and the spirit of this place,” says Ed Vogrins, Green Meadows Executive Director. Mark Harris is a former environmental columnist with the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. His articles and essays have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Reader’s Digest, E: The Environmental Magazine and Vegetarian Times. EPIGENETICS Experience Creating Inheritance by Art Gutkin

W

hat is epigenetics? Epigenetics centers on the inheritable changes in gene expression, not encompassing changes to the underlying DNA sequence (phenotype), arising from environmental influences—i.e., a change in observable characteristics of an organism through environmental influences, without changing the genetic makeup of the cell (genotype). Environment affects how cells react to the genes. Phenotype defines the specific characteristic of a cell, such as blood type, based both on genetic and its environmental influences. Genotype is that specific structure of the cell, as contained in the DNA, that determines specific characteristics of that cell/organism/individual, excluding all environmental influences. Environmental influences that create change define the differences between the phenotype and the genotype. This is best exemplified by observable differences in sets of identical twins, triplets and the like. Dismissing environmental issues, it is reasonable to assume that all identical twins would evolve throughout their lives in the exact same manner and exhibit the same behavioral characteristics and illnesses throughout their lives. Carrying this thought forward, all twins or triplets should die on the same day.

What causes differences between twins and triplets? Environment does. But… what environmental factors create changes to the cells responsible for the differences in twins as they grow? And, in turn, what materializes during a lifetime causing each individual to change into a unique individual? Cells contain “on” and “off” switches/triggers. Studies demonstrate that early childhood trauma or PTSD may alter genes, which may be transmitted from one generation to the next. These findings reveal that each and every experience in life may change that individual and succeeding generations. Imagine watching a movie creating fear. The effect of that fear over a prolonged period can become an inheritable trait. One event may not create a specific change affecting the child, but the continued revisiting of that experience just may do so. If cells are a product of the fixed DNA, prolonged exposure to a particular event would be incapable of creating change. Like sediment repeatedly deposited on a finely tuned machine, our experiences, and those of our forebears, are never erased, even if they have been forgotten on the surface or in the deep recesses of the mind. They are always

a part of us. The DNA may remain the same, but the psychological and behavioral tendencies can be inherited. You might have inherited not just your grandfather’s weak back, but also his predisposition toward depression created by a lack of childhood love. Analogous is Carl Jung’s belief in the collective unconscious. Consider a child feeling unloved and isolated, whether actually unloved or just perceiving it as such. As a result, the child begins to move inward and withdraws, but after years of therapy or moving past those childhood experiences, the individual comes out of the shell. The “on” switch has been effectively switched “off”. Now consider that individual, at a later time in life, observes or experiences an event revisiting childhood memories. The switch then turns “on”, causing the individual to re-experience the childhood withdrawal pattern. The subsequent event, though many years later and long “forgotten”, switched “on” that trigger. As switches come into play, our emotions become involved. Our emotions touch each of the five senses. Creating change in one or more of the senses alters the emotion/mood. Consider when anger overpowers us. The anger creates changes in the senses of hearing, touch, smell, taste and/or sight. Each and every emotion, each and every conversation, each and every television show creates a unique combination of these senses within an individual. Alter one of these senses and the mood modifies. After doing this often enough, the response to the event creating the anger may extinguish. A clear understanding of the client’s issue, its cause and remedy need be considered in the total context before a remedy can be obtained. Getting Your

HEAD on Straight

More than a Metaphor by Andrew Persky

“G

et your head on straight!” To most of us, this sounds like something parents tell their children in moments of desperation, but new research and modern imaging technologies are shedding light on the importance of proper alignment of the head and neck. Here are just a few reasons why it’s more than just a manner of speaking.

It’s about balance.

Although it might not feel like it, the average human head weighs nine to 17 pounds—roughly the weight of a bowling ball. Balancing our heads on top of our spines is comparable to balancing a bowling ball on top of a stick, yet our brains gracefully perform this task without any conscious effort. Two primary mechanisms are involved in this balance. First, the brain has a desire to maintain the eyes level with

the horizon, a phenomenon known as the “righting reflex”. Second, physics requires that the body stay underneath the center of gravity of the head so that we don’t fall over. If the head is slightly off balance, the brain can distort the spine in order to bring the rest of the body underneath it. Maintaining this distorted posture can be an underlying cause of chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, lower back or hips.

It’s about flow.

A recent study published in the journal Neurology Research International highlights the importance of proper flow of blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the head and spinal cord, and how a misalignment between the base of the skull and the first bone in the neck (the upper cervical region) can impact that flow. Using fMRI imaging, doctors observed abnormal flow of CSF

when upper cervical misalignments were present, and improvements in CSF flow following upper cervical treatment. The study also makes a connection between abnormal CSF flow and numerous neurological conditions.

It’s about optimal health.

Hippocrates was right when he said, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.” The spinal cord enables the brain to monitor and control virtually every bodily function. Burdened by the weight of the head, the spine is especially vulnerable at the top of the neck, close to the brain stem. We are all well aware of how a major spinal cord injury can dramatically impact a person’s life, but only recently are we learning that more subtle misalignments of the head are also impacting health in myriad ways. Patient results and the experiences of public figures like former quarterback Jim McMahon and talk show host Montel Williams are showing that patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain or neurological conditions often experience profound improvements from upper cervical treatment. Dr. Andrew Persky, DC, is founder of LifeAligned Upper Cervical Treatment Center, in Warrington. For more information, call 215-491-4200 or visit LifeAlignedHealth.com. See ad, page 29.

Practice forward thinking and willingness to let go of the past. People with high EI are too busy thinking of future possibilities to dwell upon things that didn’t work out in the past. They apply lessons learned from past missteps in taking future actions. They never see failure as permanent or a personal reflection of themselves. Look for ways to make life more fun, happy and interesting. At work, at home and with friends, high EI people know what makes them happy and look for opportunities to expand the enjoyment. They receive pleasure and satisfaction from seeing others happy and fulfilled, and do whatever they can to brighten someone else’s day. Expend energy wisely. High EI folks don’t hold onto anger over how others have treated them, but use the incident to create awareness of how to not let it happen again. While they move on and forgive, they don’t forget, and are unlikely to be taken advantage of again in the same set of circumstances.

Emotional Smarts

Always learn and grow. High EI people are lifelong learners, constantly growing and evolving. Being critical thinkers, they are open to changing their minds if someone presents a better idea. They trust themselves and their own judgment to make the best decision for themselves.

by Harvey Deutschendorf

Harvey Deutschendorf is an emotional intelligence expert, speaker and author of The Other Kind of Smart. Take the EI Quiz at TheOtherKindOfSmart.com/ei-quiz.

How to Raise Your Quotient

T

he role of emotional intelligence (EI) in helping to facilitate success and happiness in individual lives has become well accepted. People with high EI tend to share seven habits. Focus on the positive. While not ignoring bad news, EI people have made a conscious decision to not spend much time and energy focusing on problems. Rather, they look at what’s positive in a situation and seek solutions. They focus on what can be done and what’s within their control. Associate only with positive people. High EI people regard complainers and negative people as energy drains. They tend to avoid them to maintain their own vitality. Instead, they spend time with those that look on the bright side of life. They tend to smile and laugh and attract other positive people. Their warmth, openness and caring attitude leads others to regard them as more trustworthy.

Set boundaries and assert a position. Although their friendly, open nature may make them appear as pushovers to some, people with high EI are able to set boundaries and assert themselves when necessary; they demonstrate politeness and consideration, yet stay firm. High EI people guard their time and commitments and know when they need to say no. They don’t make needless enemies. Their response to potentially volatile situations is measured, not inflated, and managed appropriately. They think before speaking, allowing themselves time to calm down if their emotions start to feel overwhelming.

DITCH THE HOTEL Frugal Lodging Options from Airbnb to House Swapping by Avery Mack

ravel is changing as vacationers saved increasingly value unique experimyences husband’s life; hetourist has fare. In over standard the option of couch surfing beenaddition in goodtohealth under Dr. Mesh(Tinyurl.com/CouchsurfingAdventure), ’s care for 20 years now more people are making the most of house rentals, swapping and sitting, plus various home stays via Airbnb (Airbnb. com). All expand options for affordable journeys tailored to their needs.

Airbnb accommodations range from private studios to family-sized homey spaces, encompassing tiny houses, treehouses, geodesic domes, yurts, container cars, caves, lighthouses, working ranches, castles and luxury carriage houses. With 2 million listings for 34,000 cities in 190 countries, 600 million people have found their ideal getaway through the San Francisco-based company since it

launched in 2008. Published feedback, including comment books at the rental sites, provides assurance for visitors. When hosts aren’t on the premises, they are available as needed by guests. Mary Bartnikowski, publisher and photographer at Vagabond Travel Photography Magazine (VagabondTravel Mag.com), has visited 32 countries so far, staying in homes, ashrams, temples, boats and apartments. “My best Airbnb rental was camping for two weeks in a Hawaii home garden next to a big tree; my host forgot to mention the big, friendly dog,” she says, recalling an unexpected wake-up greeting. Hosts find providing rentals a way to monetize unused space, meet new people and showcase their area. Beth Everett, an Oregon author, offers an Airbnb detached backyard studio space. “We moved from New Jersey to Portland two years ago, and the extra income lets me stay home to write,” she says. House swapping is another option for soaking in local color. Preparation is key and includes a notebook’s worth of helpful details shared in advance, as well as onsite. Most exchanges involve a series of Skype sessions for questions and answers. Leasa Sanders McIntosh, an executive recruiter, swapped her Denver home for a month in Kona, Hawaii. “We traded cars and joked that we even traded cats. We swapped three times before they moved to the mainland.” This summer, she’ll swap to be at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Susan May, an established advocate of organ donation from Cartersville,Georgia, traded homes and cars to take her four teens to Europe. “We visited 13 countries, spending two weeks in Wales and three in Germany. We saw fireworks in Paris on Bastille Day and joined the Highland Games, in Scotland,” she says. “I want our family to be more than just tourists passing through Westernized hotels with no real contact with local folks. Exchanging homes is an ideal way for a family to travel inexpensively.” Through TrustedHouseSitters.com, senior technical recruiter Rachel Burke, of Santa Monica, California, has stayed for free in London, Cape Cod and Palm Springs, California. “This way, homeowners can travel without leaving pets in a kennel while unpaid housesitters avoid hotel expenses and gain a chance to be a native in a different location,” she says. “Last year, I watched a five-story home in a London suburb while the owners visited Portugal for three weeks.” She shares shots of her favorite spots at Tinyurl.com/ FunLondonPhotos. Burke combines housesitting with Airbnb by renting her apartment when she travels. “A couple of years ago, I paid $1,800 for a two-week trip to Thailand and charged $125 a night for my apartment, making my trip to Thailand free,” she relates. Burke lives near the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Hollywood, all prime destinations. With 50,000 listings in 150 countries, Homestay.com tweaks the Airbnb experience in that hosts are more involved in their guests’ local adventures. Cuba currently tops desired destinations for U.S. travelers, with most rentals in the capital, Havana, the nearby artistic enclave of Trinidad or rural Vinales. Many hosts arrange airport transfers, tours, visits to attractions, bicycle rentals, restaurant reservations and transportation to other Cuban locales. Hosts usually speak several languages, including English, and may even teach guests to play Cuban-style dominoes. Eco-friendly homestays are available, too, ranging from a private Nicaraguan island independently powered by solar panels and a Spanish farmhouse off the grid to an organic farm in Thailand or eco-lodge in South Africa. An Austin, Texas, listing notes, “Everything is reclaimed, recycled or repurposed. We have an infused honey business. We’re laid-back and practice good karma and a healthy, drama-free lifestyle.” Homestay’s average nightly rental is $46. While some guests are students, the majority are 35 and older, vacationing on substantial salaries; they simply prefer the local color. Vacations needn’t be expensive, but they should be memorable. The biggest challenge may be deciding where to go first. Connect with freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.

38 Million Reasons to Give Up Bottled Water

as evidenced by the Great Pacific Garbage Patch we see in the news.

Save the dinosaurs.

OK, not the actual dinosaurs. Fossil fuels were created from organisms that lived long before the dinosaurs. But none of them are coming back any time soon. The Earth Policy Institute estimates that energy used to pump, process, transport and refrigerate bottled water consumes over 50 million barrels of oil annually, more fuel than is required for 100,000 cars in a year. Recycling those bottles uses additional energy and other resources.

by Lisa White

T

he statistics are disappointing: 38 billion plastic water bottles aren’t recycled each year. But there’s no need to lose out on the health benefits of on-the-go agua. Switch to reusable bottles—and for all of the right reasons.

Create a fashion statement.

There are so many to chose from. At a local store or online from sites such as LifeFactory.com, WaterBobble.com, Camelbak.com, Sigg.com and Nalgene. com, reusable bottles can be stainless steel, aluminum, glass, polycarbonate or other plastics. Be certain the plastics or liners do not contain BPA, an endocrine-disrupting chemical linked to numerous health concerns.

Save money for important stuff.

Depending on materials and insulating properties, a high-quality reusable bottle generally retails from $5 to $30. Greeniacs.com reports that bottled water can cost up to 10,000 times more per gallon than tap water. The average American currently spends more than $5 per week ($260/year) supporting this $100 billion a year industry. Thirty dollars versus $260 is an impressive return on investment.

Stand up for communities.

Stay healthy.

Bottled water is not necessarily healthier or cleaner than tap water. Bottled water, often stored for long periods of time, may eventually contain more microorganisms than tap water. A lot of bottled water is “purified”, actually originating as drinking water from a municipal water system. Skip the pricey word games and drink the tap water that is rigorously tested by local, state and federal environmental agencies. If taste and purity are issues, invest in a water filter. Both PUR and Brita offer filtering products that effectively eliminate lead, chlorine, mercury and copper from tap water.

Be a hero to our land and seas.

Discarded bottles litter highways, clog waterways or end up in incinerators and landfills. Plastic in landfills can take up to 700 years to decompose. Microplastics fill patches of our ocean,

Bottled water is often diverted from communities that rely on that water for their livelihood or future. The bottling companies make profits, and the citizens of these areas are negatively impacted, sometimes even having to buy bottled water themselves when the non-diverted water from their taps is not safe.

Feel good.

Making the switch makes us part of the solution. Lisa White is a board member and one of more than 550 households owning the Doylestown Food Market, in Doylestown.
