Pain is a chronic condition shared by 100 million Americans; it’s the leading

Publisher@NABuxMont.com

reason people go to doctors in the U.S., costing the nation upwards of $635 billion a year—more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine. WebMD explains how vast and amorphous the condition can be, saying, “Chronic pain can be mild or excruciating, episodic or continuous, merely inconvenient or totally incapacitating…the signals of pain remain active in the nervous system for months or even years.” Sometimes the cause is known, or eventually discovered; sometimes the source remains a mystery. In this month’s issue, we are starting a conversation on the pain problem and celebrating the pockets of hope that are emerging. It begins by looking at opioids and the public health crisis that has resulted. Local writer Jack Firneno provides an “of the moment” look at how local officials and residents in Bensalem and elsewhere in BuxMont are taking on the issue and helping to rebuild communities most impacted. The complementary health community has much to offer toward building a culture of pain relief beyond opioids. Alongside prescribed, conventional medical treatments, a wide spectrum of relief alternatives exists to enhance overall outcomes of pain management. Self-care, exercise and nutrition, acupuncture, yoga, yoga therapy and meditation, Healing Touch and reiki, massage, biofeedback, chiropractic care, cognitive and behavioral therapies (including counseling and hypnosis) and CBD therapeutics represent just some of the holistic, noninvasive approaches that are demonstrating their efficacy as powerful pain management tools. Patients can receive these treatments under the care of excellent, integrative, naturopathic and functional medicine specialists and the independent medical and wellness practitioners with whom they partner. It’s our vision that the BuxMont community come together with purpose in the years ahead to help address the pain crisis, and to provide resources and compassion to those in need of support. We are grateful for your readership and for supporting our efforts to take on this challenging and important topic. Together we are “Making the Awakening” in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

this year’s summer solstice, June 21. To honor those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, for whom every day can truly be the longest day, Alzheimer’s Association supporters around the world will spend the day doing something they love. It’s the culmination of a month-long commemoration of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. “Last year, we saw bridge players, knitters, golfers, hikers and many other enthusiasts taking part in these activities as a way to have fun and do good,” says Sue Wronsky, the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter’s consultant for The Longest Day. “You can do anything you love to do, from swimming to scrapbooking.” More than five million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s—a progressive brain disease that is the most common cause of dementia. It is the sixth leading cause of death, and the only one of the top 10 that has no cure and can’t be prevented or even slowed. In the Delaware Valley, nearly 300,000 individuals have some form of dementia. “Participating in The Longest Day is easy,” says Wronsky. “Just start or join a team, register online, then choose a fun activity and begin raising funds for research and families in your community affected by Alzheimer’s.” For more information, email SWronsky@Alz.org or visit Alz. org/TheLongestDay.

The second annual festival will be held August 18 to 20, in Darlington, Maryland, just a few hours from BuxMont. The festival draws some of the most beloved national teachers, kirtan, music and yoga headliners, including Krishna Das, Dharma Mittra, Trevor Hall, Dana Trixie Flynn, Tina Malia and MC Yogi, as well as many other well-known, regional teachers. Throughout the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy musical performances, yoga classes, flow arts, themed campsites, drum circles, vegan and vegetarian food vendors, art installations, live painting, interactive art projects, workshops, fire dancing, wholesome libations and high vibrational food. hange is in the air for Green Street Luxuries, Lansdale’s popular organic skincare spa and creator of GSL Organics’ handcrafted, custom-made line of paraben-, sodium lauryl sulfateand gluten-free skincare products. After six years in its current form, the company has relocated and reopened as GSL Organics & Boutique in a new space not far from their former location in downtown Lansdale. The new location, at 308 West Main Street, carries an expanded GSL Organics product line, which offers many new and renewed items for purchase in-store and online. All GSL gift cards will be accepted at the new location. The new boutique offers one-of-a-kind bohemian clothing, jewelry, scarves, hats, shoes and accessories, as well as soy candles with cotton wicks, and herbs in decorative containers. Owner Candy Martine-Pack expresses her gratitude for the community’s support and says the decision to close the spa was bittersweet. “As our spa was continuing to grow, my time was being taken away from my passion of making and improving our healing skincare. With excitement I look forward to seeing everyone at our new location and continuing to care for their skincare concerns.” Martine-Pack will be making and packaging the GSL facial masque used in the spa, so previous customers can continue with their skin care regimen at home, and new customers can discover the effectiveness of the masque.

anyone with questions about how to use shiatsu, health coaching and other holistic techniques for mental and physical betterment. Held the the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in Pipersville, these informal meetings are open to anyone that is curious about making lifestyle changes. The meetings are freeform, where no question is “too small or too stupid,” says Shirley Scranta, the school’s director. “It’s a chance to explore your options,” she explains. “The more questions you ask, the more informed you are to make decisions about your life.” The International School of Shiatsu offers a variety of programs to help people better themselves. This includes guiding people to relieve physical maladies and addressing unhappiness or uncertainness in one’s life. Along with shiatsu, a therapy using light, physical pressure to manipulate and correct one’s energy flow, the school offers everything from tai chi and energy exercises to gardening, cooking and holistic food shopping classes. At the core of these services is the school’s reflective coaching, which begins at the Q&A sessions. Participants can ask any questions they want in order to find the programs and ideas they need for self improvement. From there, they can determine what they need to heal or grow. “We look at the whole person to find the root of disharmony,” says Scranta, “and we help them look for better choices.”

Inactive Lifestyle Accelerates Aging

G

Paul David Bond Pesqueira Paul Bond’s magic realism art illuminates a dreamlike world where anything is possible, as he deftly juxtaposes and rearranges common elements to convey universal spiritual or metaphysical ideas. Sometimes, his paintings are simply uplifting illusions, expressing the whimsical, surreal and fantastic side of life. They are always soothing, visual meditations that delight the imagination and stir the soul. Rearranging familiar objects gives Bond the visual symbols he uses as a language to reflect an emotion or thought he’s entertaining at the moment. “Often, a painting is born from something randomly seen from a car window or a line in a novel or song,” he explains. “If it stirs my curiosity, it finds its way into my work.” About Happiness in Perpetuity, he says, “We create our experience and physical environment based on our beliefs and thoughts. Those who wait for outer experiences to make them happy are at a disadvantage—happiness is simply a choice, based on our desire for it.” View the artist’s portfolio at PaulBondArt.com. 10

Healthy Eating Can Improve Bone Density in Women

T

he importance of calcium for bone health in women is widely known. Now a new study suggests that a diet of foods considered low-inflammatory, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, may help reduce bone loss and fracture risk. Researchers from Ohio State University calculated the dietary inflammatory index (DII) of 160,191 participants using data from the Women’s Health Initiative clinical trials’ baseline food frequency questionnaires. Comparative DII data were then recorded three and six years later among 10,290 study participants to determine any changes in their individual scores. Results were also compared with the number of hip fractures reported annually for the subjects, along with bone mineral density levels from the subgroup. Women with lower DII scores had less bone loss in their hips after six years.

Happiness in Perpetuity

etting off the couch and just moving may help slow the aging process in women that do not lead active lifestyles. Researchers from the University of California at San Diego measured the telomere lengths of white blood cells in 1,481 women between the ages of 64 and 95. Telomere lengths are a measure of aging within genes. After adjusting for other health and lifestyle factors, the researchers found that the women with less physical activity had shorter telomere lengths than those with more active lifestyles.

CALIFORNIA WINS CANCER LABEL CASE AGAINST MONSANTO’S ROUNDUP

A

Fresno County Superior Court Judge Kristi Kapetan has ruled that the state of California will require Monsanto to place a cancer warning label on the company’s Roundup weed killer. The ruling is the first of its kind in the U.S. and comes after a branch of the World Health Organization labeled the product’s primary ingredient, glyphosate, as a “probable human carcinogen.” Glyphosate, an odorless and tasteless toxin, has been manufactured by Monsanto for more than 40 years and sold in more than 160 countries. Monsanto will have one year to affix the warning label to all relevant products. NABuxMont.com

GINGER RELIEVES INFECTED ROOT CANALS

R

esearch from the University of Medical Sciences and Technology, in Khartoum, Sudan, tested the efficacy of ginger, cinnamon and a combination of both in reducing root canal infections. The study tested infections associated with 50 teeth involved in root canals. They were divided into five groups. One was treated with a paste of extract of ginger, another of cinnamon, and another with both of them. The final two groups were divided into a positive control group treated with calcium hydroxide with iodoform paste, and a negative control group was left untreated. The researchers recorded the number of colony forming units (CFU) of bacteria—individual bacteria units capable of growing into a colony—before and after the treatments. The extract of ginger group showed the most effectiveness, with a reduction from 83 CFUs to 26.5, suggesting that ginger may help treat or prevent root canal infections. The cinnamon group saw their status reduced slightly, to 77.8 CFUs, and the combination caused a decrease to 49.7.

Governments worldwide are taking control of a pollution problem with bans on different forms of plastic, including shopping bags. The Indian state of Karnataka has completely banned the use of plastic. No wholesale dealer, retailer or trader can now use or sell plastic carrier bags, plates, cups, spoons, cling film or even microbeads. San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban plastic shopping bags in 2007, and in 2014 it banned plastic water bottles on city properties. Since then, they have included Styrofoam and thermocol (polystyrene). Hawaii introduced a ban on single-use plastic bags in 2015. Coles Bay, Tasmania, was the first town in Australia to ban disposable plastic bags in 2003, using 350,000 fewer than in 2002. Ethiopia, France and Morocco have followed suit. It’s all part of a global movement to protect the life of oceans and other bodies of water. Take the Greenpeace Plastic Pledge at Tinyurl.com/ TakeThePlasticPledge.

Many Americans have been confused by the “Sell By” labels on groceries for 40 years. Now, the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the two largest industry trade groups, are adopting voluntary standardized regulations to clarify. Instead of using up to 10 different phrases to communicate safety, they have settled on just two: “Use By”, a safety designation to indicate when perishable foods are no longer good; and “Best if Used By”, an estimate of when the manufacturer thinks the product should be consumed for peak flavor. Studies show that consumers generally believe the current labels all signal whether a product is safe to eat, and that it will still be okay well after its so-called expiration date. At the same time, prematurely tossed groceries dominate landfills and produce greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and a coalition of environmental groups have been urging the industry to clear this up. The change is scheduled to take hold in July 2018.

Estimates for the U.S., based on a 2013 Eco Center for Transportation study, projected that if 90 percent of vehicles were autonomous, the number of driving-related deaths would plummet from an annual 32,400 to approximately 11,300. “Drivers are excited that driverless cars will offer 90 percent fewer U.S. traffic accidents, 40 percent lower insurance costs, the end of drunk driving accidents and newfound freedom for seniors and people with disabilities,” says Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association. Its 2016 report Self-Driving Vehicles: Consumer Sentiments found that nearly 75 percent of consumers surveyed like the proffered benefits. In Driverless, authors Hod Lipson and Melba Kurman highlight significant ecological benefits, including McKinsey research findings that driverless cars will yield up to 20 percent fuel savings, and a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Their smoother driving also extends a vehicle’s life. Ford intends to deliver a fully autonomous vehicle for ride sharing in 2021, according to Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company president and CEO. Companies such as Uber and Lyft already are testing driverless vehicles in pilot cities.

Anahata Yoga Expands Mind, Body in New, Larger Space by Lauren Johnson

K

athleen Tooley, owner of Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center, in Lederach, has a simple mission: to show that yoga is accessible to anyone. Tooley, a teacher of Kripalu-style yoga for seven years, became a yoga teacher to do just that. “People who felt like they couldn’t do yoga inspired me to become a teacher so I could show them that they actually can,” she says. “When folks come into the studio apologizing for being inflexible, I say, ‘I know, that’s why you’re here!’” Kripalu yoga, which originated at the Yoga Society of Pennsylvania in 1965 and was named after kundalini yoga master Swami Kripalvanandji, uses standard yoga poses and breathwork to encourage inner focus, meditation and relaxation. At Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center (“Anahata” is the Sanskrit word for the heart chakra), yoga is taught from a more therapeutic perspective rather than a fitness perspective. “You’ll get fit from your practice, but we don’t teach power or hot yoga,” says Tooley, noting that while the center does offer vinyasa classes, it specializes in modalities that are accessible to all. In addition to its weekly gentle and intermediate yoga classes, it offers yin yoga, restorative yoga and yoga nidra (guided relaxation). Class sizes are small so that individualized attention and support can be given. This accessibility has led the studio to its recent expansion. After operating from a 750-square-foot space with just two rooms shared for both practice and treatment, Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center now operates out of a new building, just across the street, in an 1,800-square-foot space with six rooms. “Now we can offer multiple functions at the same time, including yoga, workshops, massage and reiki, going on all at once,” Tooley says. “The new space will also lend itself well to our yoga teacher training programs.” The next yoga teacher training begins in September and is a 200-hour training with Kripalu-style influence. Training is done in a small group of eight to 12, so early registration is suggested. The training is taught by five certified yoga professionals of varying backgrounds and styles to help provide all the tools needed to prepare students for teaching. “It’s a very methodical process, and the teachers are there to support trainees and guide them so they graduate with the confidence they need to begin their teaching,” says Tooley. She notes that in addition to giving students the basic foundations for anatomy, philosophy and teaching techniques, the training also touches on trauma sensitive yoga,

ayurveda, hypermobility in yoga, chakra yoga, chair yoga and prenatal yoga, as well as the business of becoming a yoga teacher. “By allowing students to experience different perspectives, languages and approaches, they’re able to find their own unique expression of yoga to offer to their community,” says Tooley. Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center is located at 690 Harleysville Pike, Lederach. Local Pain Specialist Bruce Nicholson, MD

Endorses CBD for Pain Management by Gisele R. Siebold

D

r. Bruce D. Nicholson, the director of Pain Specialists of Greater Lehigh Valley, as well as the medical director for the Division of Pain Management, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, acknowledges and understands that chronic pain is a complex problem, and treating it successfully requires a unified, coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. “The human body is an amazing system of well-orchestrated parts. Like a machine, each part contributes to the harmony of the whole. When illness or injury strikes, however, the entire system is affected and pain is often the result,” explains Nicholson. “Pain is actually the body’s way of signaling a breakdown of one of its parts. Although unpleasant, pain provides an important warning to protect the body against further injury.” Nicholson is also a clinical associate professor at Penn State’s College of Medicine at Hershey Medical Center, and board certified in anesthesiology and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He consistently researches treatments that can confidently be recommended for patients, taking into consideration their long-term health and well-being.

“At Pain Specialists of Greater Lehigh Valley, our philosophy includes the belief that chronic pain can be successfully managed, and the first step is understanding the source,” says Nicholson. “Our physicians make a diagnosis and recommend a course of treatment designed to bring balance and harmony back into life.” This philosophy led Nicholson to recommend cannabidiol (CBD) products for topical use in treating peripheral pain, helping patients to heal and get back to living vibrant lives. “CBD products are an excellent alternative to orally administered anti-inflammatories, as well as opioid treatments, and they are cost-effective for my patients,” he says. “Furthermore, the majority of my patients, particularly those living with chronic pain from osteoarthritis in their joints, knees and lower back, have experienced genuine pain relief when using the CBD salve.” Nicholson notes that with the explosive growth of the cannabis health marketplace, ensuring the quality of the hemp oil is important; he recommends hemp products that are contaminant-, GMO- and pesticide-free. His offices carry products from DaCrema Botanicals,

a local CBD supplier with offices based in Plymouth Meeting, and is confident about the quality and integrity of the products. “We are at an important precipice for the integration of hemp-based healing in PA,” says DaCrema founder and owner, Joe DaCrema. DaCrema’s premium organic CBD salves, drops and vape products are available through wellness practitioners and natural health stores throughout the area, and for purchase online. “A spate of recent medical research reveals that inflammation is associated with a wide range of diseases, both physical and psychological. The key to CBD is that it acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, working naturally with the body’s systems from the top down. Perhaps the best thing about CBD is its remarkable safety profile— there are no known side effects.” For more information about Pain Specialists of Greater Lehigh Valley, call 610-402-1757 or visit LVPainDocs.com. LOOKING DEEPER INTO PAIN Andrew Persky, DC, Discusses Craniocervical Syndrome by Julie Vitto

D

r. Andrew Persky, DC, is advancing the science of upper cervical realignment and whole-body health through his work approaching pain relief holistically. Persky, whose research has been submitted for peer-reviewed publication, received a U.S. patent for his work in three-dimensional image analysis and developed the LifeAligned treatment protocol. He assures all who will listen that relief from many forms of chronic pain is possible without drugs or surgery.

In your practice, is there a typical pain patient? No, there isn’t. Every day, I see patients that have been living with chronic pain. There are those that have suffered with headaches for decades. Other patients arrive with pain, numbness or tingling in their face, arm, leg, neck, ear or shoulder blade. There are also “non-pain” patients: the ones with neurologic issues such as dizziness, seizures or brain fog. Many have spent months or years going through the standard pipeline of doctors, specialists, imaging and treatments.

With so many differences, is there a root cause of their chronic pain? What if I told you that all of the cases just mentioned have one thing in common, something that had been overlooked? That “something” turns out to be a measurable misalignment of

the joint between the head and the top of the neck, a region of the body referred to as the craniocervical junction. “Cranio” means skull, and “cervical” refers to the neck region of the spine. Each of these patients experienced symptoms of craniocervical syndrome. This misalignment affected their nervous system or body, or both.

What happens when the craniocervical junction becomes misaligned? The craniocervical junction is a very complicated region of the human body and typically overlooked as the underlying cause of numerous pain and neurologic symptoms. Neurologically, misalignment of the head can cause pressure, tension or constriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, nerves, cerebrospinal fluid, blood vessels and muscles in this region. This can lead to a wide range of symptoms. Structurally, a misalignment can result in postural changes as the brain attempts to balance the nine- to 15-pound weight of the head atop the spinal column. The overall effect can set off a cascade of health problems seemingly unrelated to the neck, such as nerve pain in the face or extremities, low back or hip pain, headaches, seizures, tremors and improper bodily functions.

How is your procedure different from traditional chiropractic? Upper cervical treatment is an emerg-

ing and highly advanced subdivision of the chiropractic profession requiring significant post-graduate education and specialized equipment. Treatment is based upon three-dimensional X-ray imaging and performed using an instrument that applies a precise, very gentle tap to the first bone in the neck. Unlike traditional chiropractic, upper cervical treatment does not require twisting, cracking or other similar forms of manipulation.

Can this treatment help everyone with chronic pain? Upper cervical treatment cannot help everyone, because unfortunately not every issue stems from the craniocervical junction. But for those it helps, the results are often incredible. It has changed the lives of professional athletes, celebrities and thousands of everyday people. Dr. Andrew Persky is the founder of LifeAligned Upper Cervical Treatment at 1432 Easton Rd., Ste. 4A, Warrington. For more information, call 215-4914200, email Info@LifeAlignedHealth. com or visit LifeAlignedHealth.com. See ad, page 38. in a Time

of Crisis Communities Organize to Fight Opioid Addiction

by Jack Firneno

I

t’s impossible to talk about pain management in 2017, and in Southeastern Pennsylvania, without also exploring the opioid crisis. The Drug Enforcement Agency’s analysis of drug-related deaths in 2015 shows a continued rise in overdoses statewide, especially from opioids. Published last July, it documents 3,383 drug-related deaths across Pennsylvania that year. Heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid often mixed with heroin, were present in 54.6 and 27 percent, respectively, of all overdose deaths. That means, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, that opioid overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death—not just drug-related fatalities—in the state. Bucks and Montgomery counties, with their mix of densely populated and rural areas, ranked in about the middle of the list, with 117 deaths in Bucks and 136 in Montgomery. However, that changed in 2016. According to U.S. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-8), Montgomery County had a “staggering” 240 opioid-related deaths last year. Bucks saw 185. “The fact is, our nation’s opioid crisis transcends politics, and so must our re-

sponse. Any response to this challenge must treat the whole person, not just the addiction,” says Fitzpatrick. While the crisis is complex, experts ranging from Thomas Farley, Health Commissioner for Philadelphia, to the National Institute on Drug Abuse trace the roots of the problem back to doctors over-prescribing opioid-based painkillers like Vicodin and Percocet. Many people using these drugs, even as directed, become addicted and seek more to combat withdrawal symptoms. Often, users turn to heroin, which is much less expensive than those pharmaceuticals. So far, 2017 has seen two big pushes at the state and federal levels. In January, Pennsylvania enacted the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Now, by law, all doctors and pharmacies must register prescriptions for controlled substances in a database. The idea is to curb doctor and pharmacy shopping, where people go to multiple doctors for duplicate prescriptions and fill them at different locations to avoid suspicion. The database can also be used by law enforcement to investigate and prevent fraud, abuse and criminal activity surrounding the drugs. At the federal level, the announcement was NABuxMont.com

HOPE

made in April that Pennsylvania will receive $26 million in federal grants through the 21st Century Cures Act to combat the crisis. It’s still going to be some time before big programs like these show results. Fortunately, they’re far from the only efforts. In recent years, community members and local leaders have volunteered their time and used their professional resources to launch programs aimed at curbing opioid abuse. “I wish I had the magic formula,” says Cathy Messina, who knows all too well the dangers of opioid abuse. In 2014, she found her two children overdosing on heroin. Her son, David, didn’t survive. In his memory, Messina formed Drug Addiction oVerdose Education, or D.A.V.E. The nonprofit distributes naloxone (Narcan), a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose long enough for the person to get medical attention. Thanks to other efforts and funding, naloxone is now in virtually every junior high and high school in Bucks County, and in the hands of police and EMTs across the state. Since 2015, D.A.V.E. has held more than 20 information and distribution sessions, from Levittown and Northeast Philadelphia, to Horsham, Roslyn and even Pottstown. “There’s definitely a need, and definitely a want, sadly,” Messina says. D.A.V.E. stresses that bringing someone back from an overdose is, at best, only the first step toward recovery. But it’s a hard lesson to impart sometimes, even as widespread as the problem has become. “There’s still a

stigma. People are under the impression that the stigma’s dying down, but it’s not,” Messina notes. “People are scared to speak out or scared to ask for help. There are a lot of people out there that have a lot to learn.” She hopes her own effort, and presence, helps others to break their silence and get the help they need— either for themselves or their loved ones. “I’m proud of my kids. They struggled; they fell into something that’s out of their control,” says Messina. “But we’re allowed to love them. We’re allowed to be proud of them.” She’s not the only one spreading that message. At the end of April, attorney Robert Whitley launched what he calls the Bucks County Drug Epidemic Blitz. The founder of TruthSpeaks.net, which educates people about drug abuse and addiction, Whitley organized seven informational sessions and town halls over 10 days across the county to help raise awareness. “Almost everybody knows someone who has wrestled with addiction. That being said, sometimes… the issue is so ugly that people don’t want to deal with it, or see it, and they push it off to the side,” says Whitley. It’s a commonality he’s seen in densely populated places like Bristol or Levittown, and in more rural areas like Perkasie or near Doylestown. “You bring up the problem and people go, ‘Really? But this is beautiful Bucks County.’ They see the pastoral, beautiful surface, but they don’t want to see the cancer underneath.” In Lower Bucks, turning a blind eye isn’t as easy. At least not for Fred Harran, director of Public Safety for Bensalem. The Bensalem Police Department is essentially on the front lines of Bucks County’s struggle with drug abuse. The township borders Philadelphia, is close to I-95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and boasts a population of nearly 60,000 people—the most in the county. That puts it in the crosshairs of drug traffickers, dealers and users. Harran goes on record regularly, stressing the need for more treatment options for addicts, noting that the police “can’t arrest their way out” of the problem. However, while he’s advocated for more “beds”, or slots available at rehabilitation centers, that’s only one part of the problem.

contraband, but won’t arrest them. Instead, each person is paired with a community volunteer that accompanies the individual to a drug treatment facility, and stays to provide support and encouragement throughout the lengthy evaluation and, if qualified, intake process. Launched last spring, BPAIR boasts 60 volunteers and has helped 38 people. “It’s a slow start. I thought we’d get a lot more folks,” admits Harran. “I think some people are still a little hesitant because it’s the police department.” Still, the program has worked well enough that Harran and others are working to make this a countywide program by the end of the year. To do so, Bucks has applied for a federal grant for all 39 police departments in the county. That’s where the 21st Century Cures Act can come in: Some of that $26 million may be allocated to a program like BPAIR. For now, however, it’s a matter of time—something that people like Harran don’t see as on their side. “[The epidemic] doesn’t take a break,” he says. “I had two more overdoses this morning. In the last 24 hours, three fatal. And that’s just in Bensalem.” Until there’s a major change, he warns, “We’re just putting a Band-Aid on a bleeding artery.”

“There’s not enough treatment for the amount of addicts there are. What no one is looking at is that we’re not shutting off the supply,” says Harran, stressing the need for police to have more resources to go after dealers and suppliers. “If you have a leaky faucet, the beds are the buckets. We have to get to the main.” Thanks to support from local government, Bensalem regularly spearheads new programs, like an in-house DNA identification program and database that has spread to the rest of the county. One of its newest initiatives is Bensalem Police Assisting in Recovery, or BPAIR. Based on a similar program in Massachusetts, BPAIR offers nearly unconditional help to anyone that comes to the police station seeking addiction treatment. Police will check those that come forward for drugs and

rom a scientific point of view there are many studies that show the efficacy of acupuncture for pain, as well as for other symptoms. New theories and observations are frequently coming to light, backing up acupuncture’s time-tested, 2,500-year-old reputation. For example, acupuncture has the ability to reduce inflammatory chemical messengers like TNF-α and increase levels of natural painkillers called endorphins. Although it’s exciting to learn about the physiological reactions that acupuncture produces on a cellular level, as acupuncturists we find the traditional theories and diagnostics are what make acupuncture so effective. The only course of treatment offered to many chronic pain patients is pain killers. In contrast, in Eastern Medicine theory the body is always trying to heal; we sometimes just need to give it a nudge in the right direction. All symptoms are considered closely by the acupuncturist in order to properly treat a condition, even something as simple as lower back pain. For some patients treating the syndrome may require supporting their immune system; for others, a pelvic imbalance; for still others, the issue might simply come down to too much stress! A correct diagnosis and course of acupuncture treatment will often help immensely with the reduction of pain. At its best, acupuncture will help eradicate the root cause of the pain entirely—something painkillers sure can’t do. ain is the number one reason why people come in to see chiropractors. Thankfully, chiropractic is very effective at treating both acute and chronic pain. But how? Well, first, we need to find out why you are in pain. Pain is one of the ways the body communicates that something is wrong. It may be from a slip and fall, which could result in obvious tissue injury, but sometimes pain starts without provocation. In either case, we need to do some investigating. This includes getting to know your history, followed by an exam, imaging, blood work or muscle testing. Once the cause is determined, chiropractors usually recommend a series of adjustments to correct the dysfunction in the joints and remove the nerve interference. This can help relieve muscle tension as well as correct and stabilize the affected joints. In addition to adjustments, chiropractors may use other modalities to further assist in their treatment plan, such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, massage therapy, cold laser or stretching. Frequently, exercises are prescribed to help strengthen the muscles to prevent further injury. Many chiropractors will also use nutrition or diet recommendations to help reduce inflammation. I see the best results in my practice by complementing traditional chiropractic care with a variety of tools to help the healing process, such as applied kinesiology, kinesiotaping, Brimhall technique, and Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis, to understand the root cause of the issue. hrough breathcentered meditation and movement meditation, or yoga “asana” postures, the vagus nerve can be toned and the parasympathetic relaxation response can be turned on. It’s commonly said that there’s a “smoothing out” that happens when breath is focused on the places where pain is experienced. The phrase “send your breath to your knee” refers to the act of sending the energy, expansiveness and calm that can create that smoothing effect. It’s all because of the power of the mind, which doesn’t necessarily take away the actual pain but gives the person a different relationship to the pain by putting some space between them and the sensation. An important thing to note in pain management is that everyone’s pain is different. That has to do with the wiring of the brain, but also the stress response and how that amplifies pain. The relaxation response may not change the physicality of what’s happening, but rather the person’s experience of what’s happening. Many older people that may not have been in touch with their bodies throughout their lives may not know the difference between stiffness, sensation and pain. Yoga helps bring to light and discern what one is feeling. ain starts in the brain, and clinicians have had to get creative with how to reframe pain in the body. I work on the acupuncture meridians that calm the nervous system and the organs in the body that deal with detoxification: kidney, liver and lung. Helping these organs do their job, whether they are underactive, overactive or stagnant, can take a lot of pressure off how we process our environment and our pain. Cranial sacral work helps with the many symptoms that linger in chronic pain: muscle tension, spasms, stiffness, inability to relax, not to mention emotional pain. I am relieved when I can open a client’s central channel, or spine, to allow the spine to release, which promotes deep breathing that adds to their relaxation. Myofascial release is a way to help patients release old stress patterns that often come up when new stress is added to old trauma. More than anything, the power of touch is something that is missing in society today. The comfort of touch is why I do what I do; nothing can center and bring someone back to the present quite like it. eflexology works with the nervous system. The action of a reflexology session directly addresses the more than 8,000 nerve endings in the feet. Through the alternating pressure of reflexology technique, your nerves become relaxed, and a few wonderful outcomes occur. As your nerves relax, pain naturally subsides. Sometimes this is temporary symptom relief. Depending on the situation this can be enough to allow the body to create more permanent relief. In this state, your body is triggered to move into physiological relaxation, which is essentially “maintenance mode”. While in this mode, your body kicks into self-repair, and that is the real magic. General inflammation is reduced and your body is allowed the time and energy to work to heal itself. The body is designed to self-correct; however, our lifestyles keep us much more frequently in the “stress” or “alert” mode of functioning—something our bodies were never intended to endure. By the nature of working on the feet, reflexology also inspires a significant improvement of circulation and lymphatic flow, spreading oxygen, warmth and nutrients while ridding your body of things it does not need or want. The better the motion for those processes works, the better healing and feeling for you.

nergy healing works well for both chronic and acute pain. Among the most popular are reiki and Healing Touch. As a Healing Touch practitioner, I look at pain from a holistic standpoint and understand that some physical pain might not have solely physical roots, but roots in the subconscious, or stored at the cellular level, where energetic disruptions occur. Some potential causes may include challenging life circumstances, ruminating thoughts, unpleasant memories, emotional perturbations or unsettling past experiences. From an energy medicine perspective, a disruption starts in the individual’s energy field. Pathology develops, followed by the experience of physical symptoms, such as pain. Therefore, the symptom of pain is a feedback signal from somewhere in our human system indicating there is a problem. Healing Touch partners with an individual and uses heart-centered intention along with touch to remove energetic blocks while connecting, opening and balancing the energy system to restore energetic balance and harmony. This elicits the innate tendency for self-healing. Although current science does not yet fully understand the exact mechanisms of energy medicine, there are ample clinical trials supporting that Healing Touch reduces the intensity of pain in diverse conditions. The best evidence is to get on a table and experience a Healing Touch session for yourself!

Art therapy, a powerful relaxant, provides a platform with which to externalize the physical and emotional pain of life transitions; in a feeling of emptiness, it can spark insights and self-knowledge. The practice of yoga, with its heritage of healing and supportive technologies, can empower a broken heart, impassion our lives and goals and grace a wounded body with fluidity and flexibility. Pain is different for everyone; it has a multitude of inner and outer manifestation, from acute pain after injury, to private pain from loss or major life change, to lifelong pain from past traumas and events. But pain’s infinite recesses all share a constant: the truth that we cannot work through pain without giving honor, time and thoughtfulness to the process. When a shapeless pain haunts our internal landscape, the question, “How do you feel?” can seem unanswerable. A majority of Americans feel pain on a daily basis.

CHRONIC PAIN Natural Ways to Feel Much Better by Kathleen Barnes

A

ccording to the National Center for Health Statistics, 25 percent of Americans, or 76.2 million, are suffering from pain that lasts more than 24 hours at this very moment: Ouch! Lower back pain alone keeps Americans from going to work a total of 149 million days each year, costing the U.S. economy $100 to $200 billion, reports the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Other common types of chronic pain affect musculoskeletal tissues, knees, hips or the neck. Migraines and severe headaches plague 16.6 percent of adults over 18, per a National Health and Nutrition Survey. Neurological discomfort can reach as high as 12.4 percent, estimates a study from the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. Even visceral or organ pain associated with heart disease, cancer and pelvic diseases occur in at least 20 percent of the global population, according

to the International Association for the Study of Pain, in Seattle. If chronic pain is affecting you, you feel it and want relief—right now.

Watch Out for Opioids

Unfortunately, conventional medicine often has little to offer most pain patients. Even for something as pervasive as back pain, surgery and steroid injections are usually an unsatisfactory first line of defense, having mixed results at best, seconded by prescriptions for addictive opioid painkillers. Dr. Nora D. Vokov, director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, told the U.S. Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control in 2014 that there were an estimated 2.1 million people in the U.S. suffering from substance abuse disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers in 2012. The problem is worsening. Every day, 1,000 people are NABuxMont.com

Such statistics expose the magnitude of the problem of chronic pain. “It’s daunting, but there are many natural ways to address it that are inexpensive, effective and with what I call side benefits rather than negative side effects,” says Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, of Kona, Hawaii, author of the smartphone app Cures A-Z. Complementary, integrative or functional medicine, all names for a holistic approach to health care, offer a comforting wealth of gentle ways to address chronic pain, most of which the vast majority of conventional medical doctors are unaware, says Cherkin, Ph.D., senior investiDaniel C gator emeritus with the Group Health Research Institute, at the University of Washington, in Seattle. “Effective natural treatments include yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, meditation, lifestyle changes and exercise,” notes Cherkin. “But since they’re not in most doctors’ medical training or learned repertoire for pain relief, patients aren’t offered the opportunity to try them.”

What Helps Relieve Pain

Here are just some of the many natural and affordable forms of pain relief.

Try the Yass method: Mitchell Yass, Ph.D., of St. John’s, Florida, author of The Pain Cure Rx, is busting the myth that musculoskeletal pain is often caused by osteoarthritis. “Arthritis or joint deterioration is rarely the cause of joint pain,” says Yass. He points out that 90 percent of people over 60 have herniated discs, but no associated pain. Yass treats patients based on his observation that in up to 98 percent of the cases he sees, weak muscles are the underlying cause of joint pain, and strengthening them provides relief. He says his prescribed exercises are usually effective in days or a few weeks. “Pain is an indication of tissue in distress. For example, pain in the

shoulder area is often an impingement of the bicep,” he says. His prescription is strengthening exercises using hand weights for the trapezoid, tricep and serratus anterior muscles. His book suggests a detailed self-diagnosis program and the necessary exercises to strengthen muscles and relieve joint pain (more at Tinyurl.com/YassIntroInfo). Address underlying trauma: Osteopath Maud Nerman, of Novato, California, author of Healing Pain and Injury, has broad experience in treating neurological problems and brain injuries and often focuses on physical and emotional trauma as an underlying cause of chronic pain. She explains that the autonomic nervous system that directs unconscious body functions like breathing, digestion and heartbeat is interrupted by such trauma. “Trauma literally shocks the nervous system,” she says. “The body cannot turn off the ‘fight-or-flight’ reaction, causing a firestorm of inflammation that can lead to a variety of serious diseases, overwhelming the body’s ability to manage its own healing.” Her work has showed how readjusting the body, restoring breathing and reactivating the autonomic nervous system can provide relief in short order.

Consider lifestyle, diet and supplements: “Pain is like the ‘check oil’ light on a car’s dashboard. It signals that something needs attention,” says Teitelbaum, author of Pain Free 1-23. “If the oil light goes on, putting a Band-Aid over it or smashing it with a hammer won’t help.” Teitelbaum recommends an energy optimization approach he dubs SHINE that addresses underlying causes of chronic pain that has worked for 91 percent of the people he’s treated for fibromyalgia and muscle pain. Sleep—Eight to nine hours a night helps replenish energy and heal muscles.

Hormones—Treat hormone imbal-

Effective natural treatments include yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, meditation, lifestyle changes and exercise, but since they’re not in most doctors’ medical training or learned repertoire for pain relief, patients aren’t offered the opportunity to try them. Nutrition—In Teitelbaum’s studies, op-

timizing nutritional support, especially B vitamins, vitamin D, ribose, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and magnesium, was helpful. A healthy, high protein, low sugar diet is effectively complemented by a variety of herbs and nutrients, primarily curcumin, boswellia, willow bark and fish oil, nutrients that widespread studies show stop pain better than pharmaceuticals. He’s also a strong proponent of eliminating sugar entirely because it causes inflammation.

Exercise—Daily exercise speeds the healing process and after 10 weeks following the first four SHINE steps, will increase the capacity to exercise. For migraines, Teitelbaum advocates vitamin B2 (riboflavin). Numerous studies support the effectiveness of

dosages of 400 milligrams per day to prevent migraines. After just six weeks of use, a German study published in the European Journal of Neurology shows thats taking a daily riboflavin supplement cut the number of migraine days in half for participants and significantly reduced the amount of migraine medication needed.

Tap for Relief: Also known as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Tapping Solutions founder Nick Ortner, of Newtown, Connecticut, says “Tapping sends a calming signal to the amygdala in the brain, turning off the fight or flight stress response and allowing the body to heal.” The physical tapping opens up the body’s energy meridians and allows them to relax so the natural healing process can take place, Ortner explains. EFT combines tapping on specific body points while repeating appropriate affirmative statements such as: “Even though I have this [pain], I love, accept and forgive myself.” He recalls a woman that arrived at a seminar he led with a toothache that had lasted for years. Doctors had done X-rays, seen an infection and prescribed antibiotics to no good effect. He asked her if she recalled when the pain began; without hesitation, she answered, “When my mother passed away unexpectedly.” “So we started working together and the pain reduced significantly right away and eventually disappeared completely,”

Yogic Breathing Brings Relief

n ancient yogic breathing practice, or pranayama, is used to rebalance the autonomic nervous system. Dr. Maud Nerman strongly recommends alternate nostril breathing for those that experience chronic pain caused by physical or emotional trauma. Here’s a basic practice: n After folding the middle two fingers of the right hand down, press the right nostril closed. n Inhale to the count of four. n Hold both nostrils closed for a count of eight.

says Ortner. A follow-up with her dentist showed no sign of the former problem. Up to now, the EFT research is positive. One study from the Energy Medicine University, in Mill Valley, California, found it helped people with chronic pain (some coping with severe fatigue and fibromyalgia) feel physically and emotionally better in as little as a month; another from the Foundation for Epigenetic Medicine, in Santa Rosa, California, showed substantially reduced trauma in institutionalized abused teenagers after just one EFT session.

Meditation may not resolve the underlying cause of chronic pain, but research from the University of Alabama demonstrates it can interrupt pain signals to the brain. It’s at least as effective as opioid painkillers in relieving chronic pain, according to a study led by Cherkin at the University of Washington. His team’s 342 subjects that had experienced back pain weekly for at least a year were offered either eight meditation and yoga classes, eight cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) sessions or just keeping up their own regular daily routines that did not include yoga and meditation. The results, recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, confirm what numerous other studies have reported: 44 percent experienced a “meaningful reduction” in pain within six months of the meditation or CBT sessions, equal to results reported by people taking addictive opioid pharmaceuticals. More, the pain relief continued for up to two years, even if the subjects stopped doing actual sitting meditation. “Meditation changes the way people think about pain and how they develop skills to keep it from becoming a major focus in their lives,” observes Cherkin. Regardless of the mechanism, experts in a holistic approach to chronic pain relief agree that encouraging self-control, self-determination and self-empowerment makes a huge difference in patients’ abilities to control pain more naturally and effectively. Reveal and Heal the Source of Pain with Zero Pain Now by Rebecca Antsis and Karen G. Meshkov

A

ccording to a 2015 study published by the National Institutes of Health, nearly 50 million Americans—one in every five people— suffer from severe or chronic pain. The wide variety of pain management techniques varies from physical therapy and surgical procedures to the most controversial and widespread approach: the use of prescription opioids. But the persistence of chronic pain has forced even more conservative-leaning patients to seek relief options that fall outside the confines of the traditional medical model. One such alternative method is the Zero Pain Now program. Zero Pain Now is founded upon the discoveries of Dr. John E. Sarno, a physician and professor of rehabilitation medicine at New York University School of Medicine. During the 1970s, Sarno discovered a mind-body connection between certain forms of pain and repressed emotion. Dan Buglio, a certified Zero Pain Now coach whose work is based on Sarno’s initial discovery, points out that we encounter proof of this relationship daily: “We cry, we blush, we get nervous stomachs; these are all very real, universally accepted physical changes to our bodies that happen as a result of emotion stimulus. So why not pain?” Sarno called the pain it produced tension myositis syndrome (TMS). He published his findings and, in more

than 45 years of practice, cured countless chronic pain sufferers, and did so at little cost to the patient. But as is common to those ahead of their time, Sarno’s work remained in obscurity until it was resurrected three decades later by Rapid Life Change coach Adam Heller, who healed himself from a long bout with severe back pain by studying the work of Sarno and other mind-body advocates. Through extensive research and lived experience, Heller improved upon the processes with his program Zero Pain Now, a step-by-step coaching protocol to help those afflicted with chronic pain end it completely. Over 1,000 private coaching clients have gone through the private Zero Pain Now coaching program and 97 percent were able to eliminate their pain completely, a metric unrivaled by other pain management techniques. Further, a pilot study conducted at the Mayo Clinic at the end of 2015 was designed to measure how effective Zero Pain Now would be for longtime sufferers of chronic pain, including those with lower back pain, degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia, shoulder pain, groin pain, spinal stenosis and migraines. The pilot participants started the program with reported pain levels of mid- to highintensity. The results showed that every single patient was pain free by the end of the 28-day program.

Bucks County resident Dan Buglio is thrilled to be among that 97 percent. For over a decade, Buglio suffered with debilitating back pain and sciatica. Frustrated by ineffective treatments offered by his doctors, he sought out alternatives. Zero Pain Now was the protocol that finally ended his pain, and he has remained pain free for the past six years. Buglio has made it his life’s mission to help others end their pain through the Zero Pain Now program, which includes education on the nature of pain, a customized pain assessment, and a proven process to reverse the body’s physical response to suffering caused by the emotional world. “It is that process that ends the pain,“ says Buglio, who works one-on-one with clients in person, via video chat and email. The first step, he asserts, is becoming proactive about your health. “Many people delegate their health to their doctors, where it does not require any thinking or ownership on the patient’s part.” Another hurdle Buglio helps his clients over is the shift in mindset. “It’s hard to accept the reality that pain is actually caused by the body’s real physical reaction to intense emotions and stress. The pain is real, but so is the cure.” For people interested in learning more, there is a free, online diagnostic pain test available at YourPainTest.com that quickly ascertains whether the sufferer is a candidate for the program. “The test takes only about five minutes and is free. You can access it from your smartphone. If you are in pain and you’ve been told there’s no hope, I encourage you to take it. You have nothing to lose and, potentially, so much to gain.” For more information, call 800-5806530 or visit DanBuglio.com. See ad, page 17. O

ne in three people will develop shingles (Herpes zoster) during their lifetime. Although the painful skin eruptions last only a few weeks, chronic pain can persist for several months and seriously impair quality of life long after the red rash marks disappear. Also concerning is that the rate of shingles is on the rise, according to a multidisciplinary review of relevant literature by PLOS, a nonprofit openaccess science publisher. The cause may be widespread use of the chickenpox vaccine. A decade-long Australian study published in the Medical Journal of Australia showed that as its use rose, so did the incidence of shingles. Shingles is acknowledged as being far more serious than chicken pox. Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder of the healthcare website Mercola.com, reports shingles can also lead to neuropathy, meningitis, hearing loss and blindness. Fortunately, there are six safe and effective drug- and vaccine-free ways to prevent shingles or ease symptoms. NABuxMont.com

1

Vitamin C Therapy: According to Dr. Thomas E. Levy, vitamin C has been successfully used in treating shingles’ skin rash and blisters. In one study by Dr. Frederick Klenner, eight such patients received 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C by injection every 12 hours, supplemented by 1,000 mg in fruit juice every two hours. Seven reported complete pain relief within two hours of the first of five to seven injections. As early as the mid-20th century, a study by Dr. Mohammed Zureick of 327 shingles patients demonstrated that vitamin C injections effected complete resolution of the outbreaks in all of them within 72 hours.

2

Fruits and Vegetables: Diets low in micronutrients including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can increase the risk by depressing the immune system. In a British community-based study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers followed

243 shingles patients in 22 general practices in London with a control group of 483 individuals with no history of the ailment. Those eating less than one piece of fruit a week had more than three times the risk of herpes zoster versus those eating more than three a day. The same pattern occurred when they looked at combined fruit and vegetable intake.

3

Capsaicin: Postherpetic neuralgia is a complication of shingles that can last long after initial symptoms disappear. Topical capsaicin, the spicy compound in hot peppers, may be an effective treatment. In a double-blind study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 32 elderly patients with chronic postherpetic neuralgia were treated with either capsaicin cream or a placebo. After six weeks, almost 80 percent of capsaicin-treated patients experienced relief. The researchers noted that because capsaicin avoids problems with drug interactions and systemic toxicity, it should be considered a first choice in management. A study of 143 Canadian patients in Clinical Therapeutics yielded similar results. Then, in a two-year followup of 77 of the patients, 86 percent showed continued benefits from the single six-week trial with no serious adverse effects.

4

Acupuncture: In a Chinese study of acute shingles cases in the journal Zhongguo Zhen Jiu, 72 patients were randomly divided into two groups. One received acupuncture around the margins of the outbreak. The others received acupuncture plus moxibustion—a traditional Chinese therapy that burns dried mugwort near the skin—of the area around the needling. The acupuncture group had a relief rate of 85.3 percent, with the cessation of herpes eruptions, quicker scab healing and reduced residual neuralgia. Moxibustion-treated patients were cured within three days with a rate of 97.4 percent.

5

Tai Chi: A study in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society found that tai chi boosts immunity to the varicella zoster virus. In a randomized trial of 112 healthy adults, one group did tai chi for 25 weeks while another received health education. After 16 weeks all were vaccinated with VARIVAX, the live, attenuated Oka/ Merck varicella zoster virus vaccine. Results showed the tai chi group had nearly twice the levels of cell-mediated immunity to the virus compared to the control group; tai chi alone increased immunity about as much as the shingles vaccine plus yielded significant improvements in physical functioning, bodily pain, vitality and mental health.

In a University of California-Los Angeles study, 36 men and women over 60 were assigned either to a tai chi or control group. For 15 weeks, the tai chi practitioners received three, 45-minute instruction classes a week; their cellmediated immunity to the varicella zoster virus rose 50 percent plus they experienced significant improvements in physical functioning.

6

Light Therapy: In a study published in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine, 25 patients with severe pain in the first week of zoster rash were divided into a prevention group (receiving the drug acyclovir for 10 days, plus UVB light therapy three times a week until pain relief was reached or a maximum of 15 sessions); a control group received just the drug. After one month, 58.3 percent of the light therapy patients were painfree, compared to 38.5 percent of the drug group. At three months, the ratios rose to 83.3 percent versus 53.8. The researchers concluded that UVB phototherapy in the acute stage of shingles might reduce the incidence and severity of lingering neuralgia. Opening Emotional Doorways to Pain: Hypnosis and Healing by Beth Allyn Herman

W

hen pain arises, the assumption is that it’s a true medical issue, injury or disease. If we visit the doctor and a medical cause cannot be identified, it might receive a diagnosis like fibromyalgia or an autoimmune disorder, which can be treated symptomatically, but often not with full relief. The experience of not being able to identify or treat the reason for our pain can lead to disappointment and frustration. New research confirms a breakthrough in thinking on pain that could put an end to this predicament, and could mean relief for so many living with unexplained pain. Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD, in his book titled The Body Keeps the Score, presents a theory predicated on the realization that physical pain can in fact stem from an emotional nature. He describes how traumatic and other emotionally charged experiences store themselves in the cells of our bodies. “Our bodies record every single emotion we experience and oftentimes the pain we have in our bodies is related to an unresolved and perhaps even unremembered earlier experience,” he says. It is suggested that emotional pain suffered as a child, during birth or, for those that believe, in a previous lifetime, is still carried in our cells, operating in a survival pattern that is no longer necessary. The longer we hold off on dealing with it, the more complex it becomes. Moreover, this can occur on a subconscious level, beyond one’s own awareness.

For example, there is a case of a woman with vaginal pain with no clinical findings that ultimately learned through hypnotic regression that she was sexually abused as a child. The body held those painful memories, as the mind had stowed them away in the unconscious. There are a number of possible mind-body connections: allergies can represent feelings that the environment is unsafe or toxic; arthritis can represent rigidity; cancer often expresses something “eating away” at a client; colitis and Crohn’s disease may be related to “holding everything in”; heart problems often equate with long-standing grief; lower back problems can arise from a feeling of not being supported in life, and TMJ can be a representation of anger or self-blame. Though it might seem counterintuitive, getting connected to and re-experiencing the painful emotion in a visceral way is the path to healing.

Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy is one type of mind-body therapy, wherein upsetting memories that manifest as physical pain can be accessed and released. In the safe space of hypnotherapy with a trained and skilled therapist, clients are guided into a hypnotic trance where the traumatic event and source of distress can be safely uncovered, and the power of suggestion used to “remap” the mind’s response to the memory. The deeper we go into the unconscious, the greater the chance for self-discovery and, ultimately, healing. Preventing Digestion Problems at the

SOURCE

Jeff Griffin, DC, Prescribes Nutritional Enzymes for Stress, Pain by Gisele M. Siebold

J

effrey Griffin, founder of the Center for Natural Healing, in Doylestown, was a practicing doctor of chiropractic with over 15 years of clinical experience when, in 2003, he was introduced to the work of influential chiropractor and nutritional scientist, Howard F. Loomis. Loomis’ approach focuses on the importance of digestion and, specifically, the assimilation, absorption and elimination systems of the body and their relationship to overall health and wellbeing. The encounter opened Griffin’s mind and made a profound impact on how he approaches healing. Since then, he has successfully used the Loomis System in combination with chiropractic techniques to ease pain and achieve optimal health for patients at his busy Doylestown office.

What is the Loomis System, and how do you use it? The Loomis System relies on the art and science of enzyme nutrition to maintain

34

the delicate balance in the body known as homeostasis. We do this by combining our knowledge of the human body with nutrition, biochemistry, neurology, physiology and structural imbalances. This system is the basis of how I understand what’s happening for my patients, and it provides me with a safe, non-invasive, reliable tool for identifying and eliminating or reducing the problems in the body that are causing the symptoms.

What is enzyme deficiency, and why does it cause illness? Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals are the building materials required by the body to be healthy. Food enzymes are a natural and important component found in food, yet since World War II, they have been systematically removed from foods in an attempt to extend shelf-life. This has created nutritional deficiencies in people. Enzymes are the “construction workers” of the

NABuxMont.com

body and are needed to deliver nutrients from food to different body systems–– and it is simply not happening. That’s why I suggest that my patients take a specific digestive enzyme supplement.

How does this holistic approach differ from traditional medical methods? Enzyme nutrition is a drug-free approach that works with the body’s innate intelligence to bring it into optimal health using whole foods that contain proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals rather than manipulating it with chemical compounds that often produce side effects. Also, unlike conventional practices where everyone with a certain condition is given the same prescription or protocol, this is personalized medicine. We take the perspective that everybody is biochemically unique, and that optimal health can only be attained when we view each person in that way. .

What does it mean to look for “root causes” or “sources of stress”? Each person’s body tells me––through specific symptoms and findings––how stress is exhausting normal functions and processes. The more exhausted and nutritionally depleted a person is, the more symptomatic the person becomes. My job is to identify and go straight to the source of the stress to heal the body rather than treat individual symptoms by temporarily covering them up with medication. Specific signs and symptoms and dietary imbalances combined with physical examination and lab tests are used to determine the stress and how to eliminate or reduce its effects. This is key, because until the cause of the stress is identified, healing simply cannot occur.

apanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo helps us discover happiness through tidiness. Already perusing home and lifestyle magazines by age 5, she spent her childhood “tidying” up her surroundings rather than playing with toys. The organizing system Kondo went on to develop, the KonMari method, defies most long-held rules of organizing, such as installing clever storage solutions to accommodate stuff or decluttering one area at a time. Her New York Times bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has been published in 30 countries, demonstrating that her methods speak to universal desires, including a hunger for order and simplicity. She’s now released a companion book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up. Kondo’s principles, including vertically stacking clothing and using special folding methods for socks, can seem quirky, yet her approach gets results. Kondo claims a nearly zero percent “clutter relapse” rate among clients because they’ve become surrounded only by things they love.

How can we begin to get and stay organized? It’s not about a set of rules, but acquiring the right mindset for becoming a tidy person. Think in concrete terms, NABuxMont.com

so that you can picture what it would be like to live in a clutter-free space. Start by identifying your bigger goal. Ask yourself why you want this, repeating the question to get to the root of the answer. As you explore the reasons behind your ideal lifestyle, you’ll realize that the ultimate reason is to be happy. Then you are ready to begin. I recommend cleaning out and organizing your entire space in one go-around. When completed, the change is so profound that it inspires a strong aversion to your previously cluttered state. The key is to make the change so sudden that you experience a complete change of heart. By discarding the easy things first, you can gradually hone your decision-making skills, including knowing who else can use what you don’t need. I recommend starting with clothes, then move to books, documents, miscellaneous items and finally anything with sentimental value.

Is it important to touch every single object in the decision process? At one point in my life, I was virtually a “disposal unit”, constantly on the lookout for superfluous things. One day, I realized that I had been so focused on what to discard that I had forgotten to cherish the things I loved. Through this experience, I concluded

that the best way to choose what to keep is to actually hold each item. As you do, ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” When you touch something, your body reacts, and its response to each item is different. The process of assessing how you feel about the things you own—identifying those that have fulfilled their purpose, expressing your gratitude and bidding them farewell and good wishes for their onward journey—is a rite of passage to a new life.

introspotlight

The Soul Alchemy of Cleaning House

Must keepsakes be included? Mementoes are reminders of a time that gave us joy, yet truly precious memories will never vanish, even if you discard the associated objects. By handling each sentimental item, you process your past. The space we live in should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.

What do you recommend for organizing what remains after a purge? The secret to maintaining an uncluttered room is to pursue simplicity in storage, so that you can see at a glance what you have. My storage rules are simple: Store all items of the same type in one place and don’t scatter storage space.

How does this process change us and our relationship to things? Through it, you identify both what you love and need in your home and in your life. People have told me that decluttering has helped them achieve lifelong dreams, such as launching their own business; in other cases, it has helped them let go of negative attachments and unhappy relationships. Despite a drastic reduction in belongings, no one has ever regretted it, even those that ended up with a fifth of their earlier possessions. It’s a continuing strong reminder that they have been living all this time with things they didn’t need. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, of Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

t starts and ends with a simple exercise: hold it in your hands and ask, “Does this bring me joy?” If “yes”, it stays. If “no”, bye-bye. This is the Spark Joy process, the powerful method that starts with tidying one’s surroundings and ends with transforming one’s life. The concept of Spark Joy is based on the KonMari Method by author Marie Kondo and outlined in her runaway bestseller, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. What began as a modest book has spawned an entire movement. Those that embark upon the journey of “tidying up” find the results nothing short of life-altering. One such champion is Doylestown native and SparkJoy.Space creator Christina Rosenbruch, who discovered Kondo’s work in early 2015. She says the results were astonishing. Positive impacts rippled throughout her life; she felt awash in spaciousness; her decision-

making acumen grew sharper, personal boundaries clearer. She felt creative, present and empowered to be at the helm of her life instead of at the whim of outside forces. “The sensitivity you reawaken translates into all spheres of your life,” says Rosenbruch. “You house clean on so many planes.” She realized this was no mere closet organizing program, but an alchemical transmutation from material to spiritual. In 2016, Rosenbruch enrolled in Kondo’s first training program to become a certified KonMari consultant. “As consultants, we are the guides. There is no right or wrong and no judgement,” she says. Unlike other clearing practices, Spark Joy is, first and foremost, practical. “Physical decluttering leads to mental decluttering,” Rosenbruch states. Dissimilar to minimalism, Spark Joy is based on fostering connection to your objects as opposed to negating them. Joyfully, one learns to reconnect with clarity of purpose so that “you know who you are and where you are going.” For more information, call 267-5447171, email Christina@SparkJoy.Space or visit SparkJoy.Space. Parenting boys instead of babies is already a grand departure from everything I have learned up until now and I am just coming to see that it will always be this way. My older son explained, “Maybe it’s because you are thinking of us more than yourself. Maybe you want time to pass so we can get to the next thing in our lives.â€? n order for small businesses to succeed with social media, they need to have a consistent presence and accept that it is here to stay. Social media is not going away anytime soon, and it will only get better. The first thing anyone must understand about social media is that it is about building the “know”, “like” and “trust” of followers. The idea is to let people know there is a human being behind the brand. The other thing to understand is that people are talking about businesses, products and services on social media. Rather than ignoring these conversations, business owners should jump in and have a say in where that conversation goes. If someone complains about products and services, owners can find out why and learn from it in order to better serve current and potential customers. Planning how to use social media to support a business is like creating a blueprint to a dream home—it should be designed to suit the homeowner’s preferences and needs. Each social media network has its own culture, best practices and purpose. We can think of each one as a different room in a dream home, each needing to be planned and designed for its specific purpose. Here are some quick and easy strategies that can be implemented right now.

LINKEDIN • Build connections by looking at the profiles of 10 to 20 ideal customers over breakfast, lunch or in the evening. Repeat daily. • Start the conversation by adding a personal message before hitting that “connect” button, or send a “thank you” message when accepting someone’s invitation to connect. • Publish articles to further establish professional identity by sharing expertise.

Meet the New “Pickleball” 03-17

You may not have heard of it yet, but pickleball is a mixture of tennis, squash and table tennis, and it’s one of the fastestgrowing sports in the country. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) at usapa.org estimates that 2.5 million players are active now, with the number expected to multiply to 8 million by next year. Regulation tennis courts especially marked for pickleball facilitate its smaller, 20-by-44-foot playing area. The need for less running about appeals to older players and others, as does the distinctive thud when the hard paddle hits the plastic ball. (Sample video at Tinyurl.com/Winning PickleballShot.) Christine Barksdale, 48, of Vancouver, Washington, USAPA’s managing director of competition and athlete services, played league tennis from childhood into adulthood until she transferred her passion to pickleball. She assesses that half of participants are “totally focused on pickleball,” while the rest see it as a way to improve their volleying skills for tennis. “It definitely improves reflexes. It’s easy for beginners to pick it up and have fun.” It also introduces kids to racquet sports. 40

Stretching the shoulders before playing is advised by licensed sports massage therapist Brian Horner, who works with athletes at pickleball, tennis, racquetball and beach volleyball tournaments in Arizona, California and elsewhere. The shoulder is like the handle of a whip in these sports, says Horner, who authored the new ebook Complete Guide to Winning Pickleball (PickleballTournaments. com). “If it isn’t operating normally, when more pressure is applied it can strain the elbow and wrist.” Swimming, especially backstrokes, is advised because therapists regard water as a friend of shoulders. “Sixty to 70 percent of the people that play [here] are retired,” says Steve Munro, owner of the West View Tennis Center, in Morgantown, West Virginia. He also sees the sport as a nice transition for older tennis players. Pickleball was invented in Washington’s Bainbridge Island in 1965 by then Congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell. Along with the Pacific Northwest, some other major pockets of popularity include Chicago, Phoenix, southern Utah, Orange County, California; and Collier, Lee and Miami-Dade counties, in Florida.

Tennis Goes Cardio Participants of Cardio Tennis, a Tennis Industry Association program, benefit from high-intensity, aerobic, interval training, using functional movement to run to return shots and move around the court in preparatory footwork drills. It also increases stamina and endurance, which enhances both regular tennis performance and overall fitness. According to CardioTennis.com (which includes a sample video), men can burn between 500 and 1,000 calories in one, hour-long class; women, between 300 and 500. Estimates put the number of players currently engaging in such clinics at 1.82 million nationwide. “Tennis is a chief component of Cardio Tennis, but it’s much more. It’s a group fitness activity, a major workout that increases the heart rate,” says Chris Ojakian, a global Cardio Tennis trainer and executive director of racquet sports with Elite Racquet Sports, of Marina del Rey, California. They manage and operate tennis programs at facilities nationwide. A session often consists of a five-to-seven-minute dynamic warm-up including stretching, tossing tennis balls and light tennis play; more tennis lasting 10 to 12 minutes, including “cardio blast” sideline activities like quick footwork drills and jumping jacks when changing sides; 30 minutes of point-based tennis games with constant rotation of players and more cardio blasts; and a five-to10-minute cool down. “Participants are moving during the times they’d be waiting their turn to hit the ball in regular tennis clinics, and it works on the kind of quick footwork that’s done in competition,” explains Ojakian, the 2011 U.S. Professional Tennis Association California Pro of the Year. Sessions, which also include party music and heart rate monitors, are “so fast paced and fun, people often can’t believe when they’re over,” he enthuses. “It accomplishes so much in one hour.”

Sideline drills enhance skills during Cardio Tennis sessions. Larry Carlat, of Venice, California, editor in chief of PurpleClover.com, credits participating in Cardio Tennis sessions with Ojakian twice a week and a healthier diet in the last three-plus years for losing 25 pounds. “You’re never standing still for more than a couple of seconds, and my footwork has improved,” says the 20-year tennis player. “Chris also provides tennis tips during classes. It’s fun and run!” Randy Kambic, in Estero, FL, is a freelance editor and writer, including for Natural Awakenings magazine.

FAMILY SCREEN TIME How to Set Boundaries in the Digital Era by April Thompson

M

inecraft. Pokemon. Snapchat. Digital media dominates childhood. That time youngsters used to spend playing with friends, being with family or sleeping has been zapped. According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8-to-10-year-olds are daily exposed to nearly eight hours of onscreen media and heavy media users are twice as likely to report poor grades. Conscientious and concerned parents are setting limits on screen time and reclaiming family time. Experts, too, are working to define a “new healthy” at a time when many activities, from homework to shopping, are moving online. “How can you begin to limit kids’ screen time when teachers are increasingly using media?” queries Pediatrician Corinn Cross, who practices in Los Angeles. “It’s hard. None of us grew up with this level of technology, and it’s moving faster than any advice can.”

Nip It Early

Cross co-authored the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) recently updated digital media guidelines, which NABuxMont.com

shifted from strict time limits to greater flexibility for and within different age groups. For children under 18 months, the recommendation is to avoid media altogether outside of video chats with loved ones. In the older age ranges, the guidelines are less prescriptive and more about setting individual limits that ensure getting enough sleep and physical activity along with achieving other developmental needs. Cross believes excessive screen time is particularly detrimental for younger kids that have fewer waking hours and more developing to do. “Toddlers don’t learn well from screens, so you will have limited return from using screens for education,” she observes. Kathy Marrocco, an Oakland Township, Michigan, blogger with YourOrganicChild.com, initially worried about her kids’ potential adverse exposure to radiation from cell phone use. Her concern soon turned to other big impacts of digital media encroaching on their lives. She cites a study of 3,000 parents of grade-school-aged kids, which found that nearly two-thirds of the children are using

their devices at night instead of sleeping, with a corresponding drop in concentration, memory and energy. Marrocco maintains firm boundaries with her daughter, 13, and son, 18, prohibiting the use of electronics at the kitchen table and in their rooms at night, in line with AAP recommendations. “They can only have devices in their room at night if they are in offline ‘airplane mode’ so they won’t be tempted to check or respond to incoming messages,” she says. Kids don’t sleep well next to their phones, agrees Cross, a mother of three, ages 4, 6 and 8. “They have trouble falling and staying asleep.” She also doesn’t let her children use e-readers instead of books.

Prevent Screen Addiction

Psychotherapist Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D., an addiction expert and executive director of The Dunes, a rehab clinic in East Hampton, New York, is even firmer about screen time, having seen some kids go off the digital deep end. Delaying the onset of screen ex-

Media and screens are best used purposefully, to achieve a specified goal. ~Corinn Cross posure is the most critical step a parent can take, suggests Kardaras. “There’s no evidence to suggest media exposure is beneficial to child development. Most tech geniuses, including the founders of Google, Amazon and Apple, were not exposed to it until adolescence. “Treating digital addiction is challenging because you can’t be digitally abstinent in this society,” he continues. “Prevention is the key.” Digital media abuse can have lasting developmental impacts, according to Kardaras, author of Glow Kids: How Screen Addiction is Hijacking our Kids and How to Break the Trance. DrKardaras.com cites numerous studies on the effects of such intensive use, from increased prevalence of attention deficit disorder to higher rates of depression. Brain imaging studies from institutions

such as the medical schools at Indiana University and University of Utah have shown how heavy exposure to digital media has effects on the brain similar to substance addiction, reports Kardaras, affecting areas of the brain linked with functions like impulse control, brain connectivity and processing speed. In his practice, red flags for potential digital addiction include strong reactions when devices are taken away, disinterest in “offline” activities, worsening of interpersonal relationships and dropping grades. Modeling good practices is as important as monitoring kids’ behavior, suggests Cross. In her household, all electronic tablets and cell phones are kept in a drawer when not in use. “If I have work to do or have to take a phone call, I’ll go to another room, then come back and be present with the kids,” she says. “Quality, face-toface time is important.” Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, in Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

tell them to put their devices away,” advises Pediatrician Corinn Cross. HealthyChildren.org/MediaUsePlan offers a free interactive online tool to create a personalized family media use plan. If kids don’t comply with rules, Kathy Marrocco suggests turning the Wi-Fi off at night or taking away devices altogether. But don’t leave a void, cautions Cross. Substitute fun, fulfilling activities.

K

eeping the family in sync about the amount of digital media use is challenging. Here are some expert tips on maintaining a healthy balance.

1

Decide the ground rules — “Determine rules that make sense for everyone, and it’ll be much easier to get your kids on board, as they won’t see it as arbitrary when you

2

3

Be wary of even “good” screen time — Test educational apps before approving them for kids to ensure their quality and so parents can help reinforce the learning, says Cross. She likes CommonSenseMedia. org for parental reviews and information to filter media of all kinds, from apps and games to TV shows. Consider advocating for limiting screen time in local schools. “I asked

Watch out for rewards — Some screen time is more mesmerizing for kids than others, according to Kardaras, who treats such addictions. Most video games are designed on a variable reward schedule, similar to slot machines, which intentionally stimulates players to chase future rewards. Consider stricter limits on such media.

4

Play first in the real world — Because it reduces overall exercise, screen overuse can contribute to obesity. Cross recommends prioritizing exercising before daily allotted screen time; after being online, it’s more difficult to engage kids in physical activity.
