standing in the nurse’s office, reading the big E on the eye chart, and listening for the high tones coming through the headphones. And who can forget their first time having a cavity drilled? As adults, though, even those considered health-conscious, we don’t pay nearly as much attention to our visual, oral or auditory health. I know it’s not uncommon for me, with my ever-busier life, to go “too long” between teeth cleanings, eye exams and other important acts of self-care. Frequently, we wait until something goes wrong before we give ourselves the attention we deserve. In this issue, we’ll seek to more fully understand how these aspects of our health are connected to whole-body, whole-being wellness, and can help us be more proactive in our approach. We’ll look at how technological advancement in recent years has transformed both prevention and treatment options for the better. Talking with local dentists, oral surgeons, optometrists and other care providers as we have this month, the message is clear: just because technology is advancing doesn’t mean care needs to become sterile or impersonal. Instead, practitioners are using technology as a tool to aid in patient education and empowerment. There is also an emphasis on integrating the health of the senses with the larger picture of one’s personal wellness. Holistic dentists have expanded their focus to address root causes of dental issues; they are counseling patients on good nutrition, which can help prevent tooth decay, as well as stress management, which can play into issues like teeth-grinding and TMJ. Today’s optometrists are talking with patients about how much time they spend using phones and other screens, so they prescribe lens designs, options and treatments that can help prevent eye strain and computer vision syndrome. We know that this integrated, holistic approach to care has a positive impact on long-term, physical, emotional and spiritual health. We’re lucky to have excellent practices right here, in BuxMont, where residents can find the combination of advanced technology and individualized lifestyle counseling to help support positive behavioral change and ensure visits to the doctor are less frequent and less invasive. By treating the whole person from the inside out, we become ever so much more than the sum of our parts. We thank you for reading and for being a part of this community this and every month. Greenshire Arts Hosts Bi-Monthly Classes

G

he International School of Shiatsu will host shiatsu and shin tai trainings as well as workshops and classes in body, energy and breathwork, tai chi, yoga, meditation and qigong throughout April and May. Offerings include Shiatsu Clinic, on April 1, Arcturian Healing Light Part Three with Gene Ang, from April 2 to 5, and Governing Vessel and the Spine, from April 21 to 23 and 28 to 30. Aspiring massage students or those interested in finding out more can attend a Shiatsu Intro Weekend from May 6 to 7. The Shiatsu Level One training will begin May 13, and Shiatsu Level Two starts May 8. For those seeking a career in shiatsu and body therapies, full-time and part-time scheduling options are available. The International School of Shiatsu recently relocated to a larger, new space in Plumsteadville, just north of Doylestown, to provide an even wider array of classes, programs and services to the community. The school’s mission is to train, nurture and support students to become excellent practitioners of shiatsu and shin tai and to provide the experience of shiatsu and advanced bodywork to the general public. All programming is designed to help “move the chi” and allow students and clients to become more fully engaged in life.

Finding Meaning in Challenging Times meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 14 and 28, while Embracing Life with Conscious Intention: Living the Magdalene Mysteries meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 21 and April 4. The first class addresses the challenges we face during important turning points in life, such as retirement, divorce, illness, relocation, death of a spouse, loneliness and aging. Through discussion and practice, Curley supports individuals in stepping beyond a limiting self-identity and bringing forth opportunities that redirect one’s life into a more meaningful presence. The resource book used in this course is Curley’s Completing the Seven, a guide to realizing full potential. The second class explores the mysteries of Western spirituality and how consciously living one’s humanity can lead to a connection with the divine self. Included in this course is the metaphysics of spirituality, journey of the soul, practices for connecting to inner wisdom and divine consciousness, and balancing the feminine and masculine. The resource for this course is Curley’s recently published book, The Eighth Gate, which focuses on the Magdalene Mysteries. Both classes contain progressive workshop content, while each offers meaning unto itself. At-home studies are available via e-mail for those that cannot attend the threemonth series in person.

Local Dementia Conference Offers Tips and Tools for Caregivers

ore than 450 people will gather at the Valley Forge Casino Resort, in King of Prussia, for the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter Annual Dementia Conference, entitled Empowering Caregivers & Communities, on April 24. Attendees will hear from several dementia care experts, including keynote speaker, author/educator/gerontologist, Tam Cummings, Ph.D. “Family and professional caregivers will learn innovative tips and tools from specialized workshop presentations and each other,” says Kristina Prendergast, the chapter’s manager of conference and program outreach. The Delaware Valley Chapter offers a free, 24/7 helpline, support groups, consumer education and other caregiver and early-stage programs and services. Alzheimer’s Association studies have shown a majority of caregivers report higher emotional and physical stress due to caring for someone with dementia. More than one-third experienced symptoms of depression. The association’s 2016 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report found one-fifth of care contributors in the United States also sacrificed their own medical care by cutting back on doctor visits, putting their physical health at risk. In Pennsylvania, approximately 400,000 residents have Alzheimer’s or a related disorder. In 2015, as many as 673,000 family members and friends provided 766 million hours of unpaid care for them—worth more than $9 billion. “Too often, struggling caregivers suffer in silence,” says Prendergast. “That’s why we encourage anyone who’s caring for someone living with dementia to attend the conference. esearchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, used data from previous studies to discern the association between dairy and animal fats and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in American adults. The study reviewed dairy fat and other fat consumption data using validated food-frequency questionnaires from more than 43,000 men and 175,000 women during three different studies, each spanning at least 20 consecutive years. Of the subjects studied, 14,815 developed some form of CVD, close to 7 percent of the total. The researchers found that replacing dairy foods with foods containing polyunsaturated fats—primarily found in vegetables, nuts and fish—in just 5 percent of a subject’s diet reduced the risk of CVD by an average of 24 percent. But replacing the same percentage of dairy fats with other animal fats increased the incidence of CVD by 6 percent.

Kids Going Online at Bedtime Sleep Poorly

A

new study from King’s College London has found that children’s use of electronic devices close to bedtime can reduce their chances of a good night’s sleep. Researchers examined 20 existing studies encompassing 125,000 children between the ages of 6 and 19. They found that youngsters using a device within 90 minutes of falling asleep had an increased likelihood of poor and inadequate sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. Study author Ben Carter, Ph.D., says, “Sleep is an often undervalued, but important part of children’s development, with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems.” These can include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, reduced immune function and poor diet. Poor food choices and excessive eating can start young, as illustrated in a study from Colorado University, in Boulder, which found a link between sleep deprivation and poor diet choices in preschool children. The Colorado study followed five girls and five boys, ages 3 and 4, that were regular afternoon nappers. They were deprived of their naps for one day, during which their food and beverage consumption was monitored and compared with their choices on a day when their sleep routine remained intact. During the sleep-deprived day, the children ate 20 percent more calories than usual and their diet consisted of 25 percent more sugar and 26 percent more carbohydrates.

Oregano Oil Proves a Safe Antibiotic for Poultry In many large commercial chicken farms, the animals are fed antibiotics to keep them healthy and fight off infections. But due to consumer demand, McDonald’s has eliminated antibiotics used in human medicine from its entire restaurant chicken supply. Meanwhile, a farm in Pennsylvania owned by Scott Sechler is among the first to rely solely on a mix of oregano oil and cinnamon in the treatment and care of its chickens. In addition to being completely natural, oregano oil supplies the chickens with health advantages, producing a much higher quality of natural chicken in a far more humane method than that attained using antibiotics. Like antibiotics, the oil assists the chickens in battling any infections, reducing the number of birds lost to disease. Bob Ruth, president of another Pennsylvania farming business, has been testing oregano on his pigs for six months to see if it can outperform prescription antibiotics. Related problems arise when animals live in dirty conditions, making them more susceptible to infections and viruses, which can also be triggered by insufficient cleansing of slaughterhouses that must be hosed down and completely sanitized after each act of butchery. He thinks that drugs should not be a requirement if the farmers keep things tidy.

California Outlaws Single-Use Plastic Bags California’s ongoing ban on singleuse plastic carryout bags, approved by 52 percent of voters, is setting a notable precedent for other states. A coalition of environmental groups, grocers and others are collaborating, and Mark Murray, of Californians Against Waste, welcomes elimination of the 25 million plastic bags that pollute California every day, threatening wildlife. In 2007, San Francisco first banned plastic shopping bags, setting off a movement that led nearly half the state, including its biggest cities, to do the same. Although the legislature passed a statewide ban on plastic bags two years ago, paper bags are still for sale at grocery stores and other outlets for a nominal fee.

African Aquaculture a Success Fish farming has become a way for many Africans to beat poverty and hunger. Hillary Thompson, who lives in Milton Park, a low-density area in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, says, “For more than a decade, fish farming has become a hobby that has earned me a fortune.” He has been able to acquire properties that he rents out as one of many residents that have profited through fish farming. In many African communities, swimming pools and backyards have been converted into smallscale fish farming areas. Faced with nutritional deficits, some Africans have taken up the practice to improve their diets. In Zimbabwe, an estimated 22,000 people are involved in fish farming, according to the ministry of agriculture. Behind the success of many of them stands the Aquaculture Zimbabwe Trust, established in 2008 to mobilize resources for the sustainable development of environmentally friendly fisheries nationally. Across Africa, fishing provides direct incomes for about 10 million people and provides food for 200 million more.

Oil Wastewater Irrigating California Fields In the nation’s produce basket, some California water districts are knowingly selling oilfield wastewater to farmers, putting a huge portion of our fruits and vegetables at risk of contamination. Watchdog group Water Defense uncovered one district buying oilfield wastewater to include in the water it sells to farmers to irrigate crops in California’s Central Valley. This year, Food & Water Watch uncovered another district buying this potentially toxic wastewater and selling it to farmers. A threat to California’s agriculture is a threat to the entire country’s food supply. Some staples of which California is the primary U.S. producer include 99 percent of olives, 99 percent of almonds, 98 percent of garlic, 96 percent of broccoli, 95 percent of celery, 91 percent of strawberries, 91 percent of lemons and 83 percent of fresh carrots. Kripalu Comes to Montco Anahata’s Hatha Yoga Teacher Training

ithin a sea of yoga studios and wellness centers, each proffering their own classes and companion philosophies, how does one discern which class is right for them? This question is even more pertinent for those seeking to take the leap and train as a yoga teacher. In a world where more is more, Anahata Yoga and Wellness Center refreshingly offers a different kind of narrative for its students. ccording to a 2012 New York Times story, “Preschoolers in Surgery for a Mouthful of Cavities,” more dentists nationwide are recommending that children be administered general anesthesia at hospitals due to the severity of decay. Such extensive dental work on children is largely preventable. Wise parents encourage their children to develop healthy habits such as brushing teeth at least twice a day; eating fewer sugary snacks and brushing afterwards; limiting fruit juice intake to four ounces a day; and sucking on bacteria-killing xylitol lollipops. Such a routine combined with an initial dentist visit by their first birthday can reduce dental costs, including hospital treatment for extreme decay that can cost thousands of dollars. Other ways to reduce the too-common incidence of six to 10 childhood cavities include breastfeeding only until baby teeth erupt; avoiding transmission of an anaerobic oral bacteria carried in saliva that’s the leading cause of tooth NABuxMont.com

This suits her just fine, and she admits to relying on an arsenal of silly jokes to put patients at ease. Motivated all her life by strong empathic proclivities, Ashley has always known that her purpose is to help others care for their health. Her studies in kinesiology revealed how the head and mouth impact overall well-being, which put her interest in dentistry into focus. Heritage Dental’s resident aromatherapy expert Thea Davey describes herself as “loud, fun and really loving.” Underneath the boisterous exterior is a heart that is immensely caring toward her patients. What are some common misconceptions people have about chiropractic treatments, and how do you address these for first-time clients?

One of the most common misconceptions is that the adjustment hurts or that the only way to get adjusted is manually. I tend to be conservative with my initial treatments, especially with someone that has never been to a chiropractor. If someone is nervous about being adjusted, we may start with instrument adjusting or with a gentle, manual adjustment. Instrument

adjusting utilizes a handheld tool instead of just hands to do the adjustment and is generally less forceful, without any popping sounds.

What are the benefits of seeing a chiropractor, and how often should a client receive treatment?

Because the nervous system controls every part of the body, chiropractic treatment can help almost any issue. I’ve seen amazing results with asthma, constipation, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, migraines, sinus problems and colds. Generally, the average person will get adjusted anywhere from once a week to once a month.

How do people know if a chiropractor is right for them?

The first thing to do is to get evaluated. Most chiropractors can do a preliminary screening that involves posture and spinal palpation. Many people don’t realize that the beginning phases of disease, including arthritis, don’t involve pain, but can show in a spinal exam and can even be seen on X-ray.

What are the most effective techniques for correcting physical imbalances?

Maintaining good posture is a good start. Habits like sitting on feet or sleeping with one knee bent and one straight can perpetuate spinal imbalances. I recommend some type of daily exercise. Walking is a low impact activity with some cardio benefit. Core strengthening exercises help with posture and lower back support. I’m partial to yoga because it includes a good mix of strength and stretching, as well as a component that helps balance the mind.

What are some things people might not know about your work? At Samsel Integrative Health, I use a comprehensive approach to each person I see. I look at the physical, chemical and emotional aspects of the problem. In regards to chiropractic health, it’s important to remember this is rarely an overnight fix. Just like working out or wearing braces on your teeth, it takes time to make changes in the body. Ultimately, I want patients to be comfortable and confident with the treatment they are receiving.

The Mercury Amalgam Debate Pushes On

here is no topic in modern dentistry as controversial as the use of silver mercury amalgam dental fillings. Since the 1840s, the potential hazards of this common dental device have been a source of contention. Despite scientific evidence supporting the health and environmental hazards of mercury fillings, the American Dental Association (ADA) continues to endorse its safety, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) continues to side with the industry supporting its use. While the debate continues, New York City’s Times Square is currently the site of a jumbotron projecting: “MERCURY DENTAL FILLINGS RELEASE TOXIC MERCURY.” The billboard is part of a massive effort to educate the public about the toxic properties of silver amalgam dental fillings. Highlighted is the “Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique” (SMART) developed by its sponsor, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a mercury-free dental organization that certifies dentists in an amalgam removal protocol to reduce the potential negative health outcomes of mercury exposure to patients, dental professionals, students, staff and others. Today’s dental amalgam fillings are comprised of mercury, silver, cop28

Mercury may have no threshold below which some adverse effects do not occur. ~World Health Organization 2005 Policy Paper per, tin and sometimes zinc. At one time ADA professed that mercury was bound within the amalgam and was not released once properly mixed and implanted into the tooth. However, after years of debate, the ADA now admits “small amounts of mercury are released from these fillings,” and the FDA concurs that dental amalgam “releases low levels of mercury in the form of a vapor that can be inhaled and absorbed by the lungs” and that “high levels of mercury vapor exposure are associated with adverse effects in the brain and the kidneys.” Despite ADA and FDA’s long overdue acknowledgement that mercury, a known neurotoxin, is released from these fillings, traditional dentists rarely advise patients of the potential exposure to mercury while sitting in the dental chair. One local dentist claims mercury is still “inert” once mixed in an amalgam. NABuxMont.com

So when does mercury veer from safe to toxic? A 2005 World Health Organization policy paper stated “mercury may have no threshold below which some adverse effects do not occur.” Although no official conclusion has been reached among U.S. public health organizations, a landmark provisional agreement was approved in January 2017 by the three governing institutions of the European Union (E.U.) to ban amalgam dental fillings for children as well as pregnant and nursing women. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2018, and will affect 500 million people. It still must be approved by E.U. governing bodies but is overwhelmingly supported by citizens and lawmakers. As efforts progress to ban the use of mercury amalgams worldwide, the U.S. remains unrestricted with the exception of FDA’s caution for use in pregnant women and children under 6, despite their acknowledgment that “some individuals [may] have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury.” This stance of sober reluctance also seems to be the prevailing position of most traditional dentists, although, up to half of American dentists no longer use mercury amalgam fillings. Their use fell steadily from an estimated 157 million mercury fillings placed in the U.S. in 1979 to fewer than 20 million in 2015. Although some medical professionals believe that it is “stretching biological plausibility to associate the vast number of health disorders associated with mercury fillings,” scientific studies support the link between mercury fillings and symptoms related to Parkinson’s, lupus, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), schizophrenia, ADHD, insomnia, memory loss, neuromuscular effects, kidney failure, headaches, cognitive and motor dysfunction, autoimmune disease, depression, anxiety and autism spectrum disorder. Patients that believe their health was severely compromised by mercury fillings (many of whom experienced improved health following safe removal of their fillings) agree with IAOMT’s position that dental amalgams pose a public health threat and should be banned.

The official line of ADA, FDA, the Environmental Protection Agency and other public health organizations is that while there may be a dearth of “credible” science linking amalgam fillings to “adverse health effects”, pregnant women and children under 6 are cautioned against use. And while the FDA grants that “some individuals [may] have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury,” not enough “credible” studies exist to calculate which populations are at risk. Thus amalgams remain on the market, innocent until proven guilty. Those that report mercury poisoning are dismissed as “allergy” anomalies or as medical cases that lack apparent cause. Meanwhile, the issue has moved from hearings to federal court. In 2008, a federal class action suit was filed by the IAOMT against the FDA to reclassify dental amalgams from a Class I to a Class II medical device, indicating their potential to be harmful. The broad coalition of plaintiffs in the case included consumer advocacy groups, professional associations and individuals. In early 2012, the IAOMT brought a federal court suit seeking a ban or limitation of use of amalgam fillings. In response, the FDA docket indicated a new amendment to its standing

amalgam policy would require “… a sea change in the government’s regulation of the controversial filling material.” It promised prohibition of “the use of mercury-based dental fillings... in pregnant women, nursing mothers, children aged less than 6 years, and other groups considered sensitive to the metal’s neurotoxic vapors.” Furthermore, according to the 2012 FDA safety commission draft, “alternative materials would best be offered as the first line of restorative care, minimizing the use of dental amalgam.” Before passage, the FDA guidance was struck down on its path to the Department of Health and Human Services. Robert Reeves, a Kentucky litigator and self-described “mercury survivor”, has been bringing cases of mercury poisoning before the courts for over 30 years. He says, “on the part of the FDA and ADA, this is widespread ignorance at best and fraudulence at worst.” Reeves explains that the burden of proof falls on the victims to produce evidence linking their health-related symptoms to mercury exposure from amalgams. Two such cases were fought and won by Pennsylvanians, one filed in PA and the other in New York State. When Karen Palmer, a former Lehigh Valley dental assistant of 27 years, won her 2005 settlement, she became the first and only dental assistant in the U.S. to win an occupational mercury exposure case claiming illness and injury through workers’ compensation in Pennsylvania. In 2006, she was awarded a full decision in her social security disability case for mercury poisoning that manifested as chronic fatigue, pares-

thesia, central nervous system damage, toxic neuropathy and M.S. (Palmer was one of the plaintiffs in the 2008 and 2012 federal class actions, as well). Another longtime warrior in the fight for mercury-free dentistry is Montgomery County resident Freya Koss. In 2014, after a 14-year legal battle, her landmark case was settled outside of court with the dentist who improperly removed a mercury amalgam and replaced it with a new one. Within days of the dental work, Koss experienced a host of symptoms including double vision, light sensitivity, muscle weakness and loss of equilibrium. Neurologists diagnosed her with three life-threatening autoimmune diseases including lupus, MS and myasthenia gravis, warning that there were no known causes or cures. After discovering her symptoms were the result of having been acutely mercury poisoned, her fillings were safely removed by an IAOMT dentist, and she was treated by an alternative medical doctor who supported her slow recovery. Today, she is an impassioned health advocate and founder and director of the Pennsylvania Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry, the organization that spearheaded the 2009 passage of Philadelphia Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown’s “Use of Amalgam in Dentistry” ordinance. Philadelphia is the first city in the nation to require distribution of an informed consent brochure advising patients of the dangers of mercury in silver amalgam fillings and FDA’s warnings for pregnant women and children. The battle is far from over; consumer advocacy groups, NGOs, lawyers, mercury-free dentist coalitions and individuals from all walks life comprise the patchwork of populations working to make mercury amalgams a part of dentistry’s past. he Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is the nation’s foremost advocacy organization for individuals affected by hearing loss. Founded in 1979 in Bethesda, Maryland, by Howard E. “Rocky” Stone, who had a bilateral hearing loss, HLAA is an international, nonprofit organization for people with hearing loss, their relatives and their friends. Its mission is to open up the world of communication through information, education, support and advocacy. In 2001, the HLAA-PA all-volunteer state office was established to provide information, education, support and advocacy for Pennsylvanians living with hearing loss. HLAA-PA publishes a free, quarterly newsletter that reaches more than 2,200 people and services 13 chapters throughout Pennsylvania, with new locations in development. “Telecommunications, as well as emergency preparedness for people with disabilities, is a top priority on my agenda,” says Kay Tyberg, a member of the HLAA-PA Advisory Council and chair of

the PA Telecommunications Relay Service Advisory Board. As a former Bucks County resident and someone who has experienced hearing loss herself, Tyberg has fully embraced the work of facilitating access to assistive technologies, such as Video Relay Service (VRS) and captioned telephone systems. “VRS is a way for profoundly deaf people to communicate with other deaf or hearing individuals via video through a live, on-screen interpreter. It is a huge breakthrough for the deaf community,” says Tyberg. “In a nutshell, the VRS technology is replacing the teletypewriter, or TTY, for all but those with access issues.” The captioned telephone is another device that, as Tyberg explains, many older deafened adults are more accus-

In your opinion, what is the greatest health risk Americans face today and what can we do about it right now? I’m convinced that for the typical American, the most important health step to take is to stop drinking soda, sports drinks, fruit juices or artificially flavored and sweetened waters and replace them with pure water. Most people are now aware that sodas are laced with processed sugars like high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners, but many don’t know that their favorite sport and vitamin drinks contain these sweeteners plus a host of frightening extras, including toxic chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, phthalates, BPA [bisphenol A] and disinfection byproducts.

What role do carbohydrates play? Carbs are a far dirtier fuel than fat and generate far more reactive oxygen species than fat. Some 70 years of following low-fat diet recommendations has resulted in the vast majority of dieters losing the ability to burn fat as their primary fuel. One of the most powerful strategies to regain this ability is to start a practice of regular intermittent fasting, restricting your eating window to six to 14 hours a day and fast the rest of the day. At the root of obesity is mitochondrial metabolic dysfunction. Metabolic disorders go hand-in-hand with many of the chronic diseases plaguing Americans in record numbers—including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, dementia and cancer—according to numerous studies such as research by the Centers for Disease Control and the Center for the Study of Chronic Metabolic and Rare Diseases, at George Mason University. The most potent strategy to address such metabolic dysfunction is to make a strong commitment to reaching and maintaining a personally healthy level of body fat. Explore and Live on the Eastern Seaboard’s Longest Coastal Preserve

hough it is only hours from Washington, D.C., a true hidden gem lies just to our south. Off the Eastern Shore of Virginia are the barrier islands which protect seaside tidal creeks, bays, marshes and the mainland, providing habitat for abounding nature, including migratory songbirds, raptors, shorebirds, shellfish and finfish. Visitors are welcomed with the sign “You’ll Love Our Nature.” For many in the D.C. region, Virginia’s Eastern Shore is becoming the place not only to discover on vacation, but also to find their dream retreat or retirement home. On one side of the peninsula lies the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S. With more than 150 rivers and creeks flowing into the bay, it provides sandy tidal areas, suitable for boat docks and marinas, as well as beautiful beaches to enjoy. On the

other side lie the barrier islands and the Atlantic Ocean, knit together with bays, inlets and salt marshes. Except for a few “grandfathered” properties, the barrier islands are uninhabited; however, they can be easily enjoyed by kayak or boat. There are many free public boat launches available for easy access to the islands or deep sea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Fourteen of the barrier islands make up the Virginia Coastal Reserve and has earned the distinction of a United Nations Man and Biosphere Reserve. Since the 1970s, nonprofit, federal and state conservation partners, including The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the Commonwealth of Virginia have invested more than $100 million to protect and restore 133,000 acres of coastal and mainland habitats, including barrier islands, marshes and upland forests, and have led to a reintroduction of a species of bay scallops to the coastal bays, which had not been seen there for more than 80 years due to habitat loss. The bounty and beauty of the Eastern Shore are important economic drivers for the entire region, with agriculture, including aqua-farming, research and tourism as the industries that provide this growth. Crowley sees the Gyrotonic approach complementing virtually any activity. “The exercises help practitioners learn how to move more efficiently, easily, powerfully, gracefully and successfully in every facet of life.” The method is also offered without equipment in the form of Gyrokinesis, a flowing class done on a chair, mat and standing. Thumbs-Up on Fats Good Fat Doesn’t Make Us Fat by Judith Fertig

I

n an era of too much information, the role of fats in our diet has been a victim of not enough information. Today’s turnaround in nutritional thinking acknowledges natural fats as being vital to heart health and weight loss.

Heart Health Benefit

A recent metastudy in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American College of Physicians, concluded that saturated fat does not appear to increase heart disease risk, overturning almost 60 years of accepted medical thought. The researchers analyzed data from 76 studies involving more than 600,000 people and found that those that ate the most saturated, or “bad”, fat did not show a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those that ate the least. Note that processed trans fats remain a villain, still deemed a risk to heart health per the metastudy. The misleading information began in the 1950s, when Physiologist Ancel Keys, Ph.D., discovered a correlation between diets high in saturated fats and higher cholesterol levels. Soon, the lowfat diet was born. In 2000, further research introduced the concepts of good and bad fats. More 38

recent analysis confirmed this finding with the refinement that saturated fats increase both types of cholesterol. However, the latest research from the journal BMJ shows that saturated fat does not increase the number of LDL, or “bad”, particles, a predictor of cardiovascular disease. Instead, it makes existing LDL particles larger, a fairly benign situation in regard to such disease.

Weight Loss Benefit

Fat doesn’t even make you fat, claims Mark Hyman, a well-known medical doctor in Lenox, Massachusetts, and author of Eat Fat, Get Thin: Why the Fat We Eat Is the Key to Sustained Weight Loss and Vibrant Health. “The theory that all calories have the same impact on your weight and metabolism remains one of the most persistent nutrition myths,” says this practitioner of functional medicine who points out that we’ve been sidetracked by wrong thinking. “Eating fat can make you lean. Healthy cell walls made from highquality fats are better able to metabolize insulin, which keeps blood sugar better regulated. crease fat burning, diminish hunger and reduce fat storage,” he notes. Whole30, a 30-day diet revolving around clean eating, also emphasizes healthy fats. Devised in 2009 by Dallas Hartwig, a functional medicine practitioner and certified sports nutritionist, and Melissa Hartwig, a certified sports nutritionist, the program aims to reduce inflammation, detoxify the body and reset metabolism. The Salt Lake City, Utah, authors of the New York Times bestselling The Whole30 recommend healthy fats to keep us full and rev up metabolism. Recommended healthy fats include coconut milk and oil, avocados, olive oil, organic ghee (clarified butter) and raw nuts. Josh Axe, a natural medicine practitioner and clinical nutritionist in Nashville, Tennessee, recommends the healthy fats contained in avocados, organic butter and ghee from grass-fed cows and goats, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines, walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds. “Butter’s experiencing a comeback as a healthy fat as its benefits become more widely known,” says Axe. “The omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in butter help the brain function properly and improve skin health.” Ghee, an ancient Indian version of butter, is lactose- and casein-free, while being loaded with fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E, says Axe. These vitamins are best absorbed by the body when they’re in a fat substance and then stored in the gastrointestinal tract, keeping metabolism and digestion on track, he notes. Ghee’s high level of vitamin K2, best known as a natural blood coagulator, “also helps strengthen bones, while the fatty acids found in it improve digestion and reduce inflammation.”

Healthy Levels of Fat

“If you’re active, about 40 percent of your calories should come from carbohydrates, another 30 percent from protein and the other 30 percent from fat in general,” says Axe, adding that this has the added benefit of helping prevent arteriosclerosis. “Some people may consume a greater percentage of healthy fats if the goal is to become a fat burner.” “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss and health,” Hyman reminds us. “Low-carb, higher-

t’s fascinating to observe how family life has evolved over time. Families in the 1950s and ‘60s were quite conservative with rules and limits. A teenage boy with long hair was considered radical. The ‘70s was the era of rebellion—teens wore long hair, attended protests and used mind-altering drugs. Each of these eras posed unique challenges to the parent-child dynamic. The excessive use of electronic devices is the parental complaint of our times. It affects kids of all ages; even toddlers seem to intrinsically know how to use many devices. Video screens do a great job of keeping kids quiet and happy for many hours. What parent doesn’t want to make their kids happy? However, what really makes kids happy is getting not what they want, but what they need. And what they need is what we all need: acceptance, affection, appreciation, approval and attention. We cannot do that when our heads are buried in a screen. When we set limits on technology time and pay attention to feelings, we know and sense that something is missing. We need to feel the warmth of a long hug. We need to gaze into our children’s eyes and see their souls and accept them on a deep level. We need to really listen attentively to their words and the feelings behind them. We are lucky to have practical therapeutic tools and practices, such as EFT, that can help open up this communication and bring intimacy back into family life. Let’s start today. A

scension is the path of those who are choosing to consciously evolve. It’s a personal choice to boldly step into the unknown in order to expand into an experience that is entirely new. Ascension is actively choosing to expand into higher consciousness. Ascension is merging with one’s higher self, opening one’s heart and expanding to reunite with “source”, the divine light, and all levels and layers of one’s authentic self. It is returning to the experience of divine light and experiencing the highest levels of unconditional love and divine alignment with pure source light in every area of life. Ascension is not something that happens to us on a certain date, or that we unknowingly or unwillingly stumble into. Awareness will help us to adapt to the ever-changing circumstances of life around us. In addition to meditation, we should learn and seek out new

perspectives, validate what we learn to gain wisdom and knowledge, implement what will serve us, love in every moment, move forward and grow. This is the ascension path—the path of increased awareness, higher consciousness and illumination; the master path of love. Higher vibrational living awaits us, as we consciously choose to ascend. Not all will ascend in this lifetime, but those who are drawn to learn more have begun the process. The total enlightened and illuminated self already exists within each of us. Our challenge is to integrate our universal light into our being by working with the new spiritual chakras to bring our spiritual power into the physical. We must each open our heart, become aware, and shine with the full brilliance of our blessed higher self and spiritual being— the Universal Body—which we can now access and use, here in the physical. We must each recognize ourselves

as the one: every moment is our opportunity to beam out and reflect love, because now, unlike anytime before, is the time. We may feel that it is especially difficult to stay on our spiritual path in these days of political difficulties. The real issue is not that we stumble and fall away from our center, but rather that we work to try again and again to return to that center. It can seem so hard to hold onto the vibration of the State of Being. It is entirely understandable to recognize that we will stumble and fall when we struggle with that which we see and hear—and this can be harmful to ourselves and other people. Many of us are at a place in our paths where we are facing strong challenges from within our very own selves, and we need to devoutly practice our learning of that which is a higher path to walk in life. Then the world will experience a raise in consciousness.
