In this season of giving thanks, we at Natural Awakenings turn our attention

toward a new breed of social and political change-makers that are bringing forth fresh initiatives nationally and internationally. Whether their work is in conservation and environmental justice, health and nutrition, food and farming systems, urban planning or cross-cultural exchange, their paths all converge at the intersection of passion, purpose and productivity. From that sacred space emerge solutions and resolutions that make the world a better place to be. BuxMont is filled with our own cadre of innovators and originators. For this month’s issue, we focus on a handful of local trendsetters who are redefining the status quo in a multitude of ways. We meet leaders from Elkins Park, Ambler, Doylestown and Wyndmoor who are mobilizing to build fully autonomous, democratically run “co-ops” from the ground up so they may better meet the needs of their communities. We interview Wynnewood’s Meg Miller, whose lawn signs offer unexpected inspiration to commuters driving through her Main Line neighborhood, and Dr. Andrew Persky of Chalfont, Bucks County, who has brought life-changing pain relief to patients, using an innovative approach to chiropractic medicine. Karen L. Smith’s Full Living psychotherapy collective employs a shared economy model to connect clients with specialized clinicians across the Philadelphia area, while Randy Garbin’s Walkable Jenkintown initiative promotes civic support for a more pedestrian-positive town—hoping to improve his Eastern Montgomery County neighborhood’s physical, social and economic health. Activist filmmaker, lawyer and advocate Matt Pillischer, from Cheltenham Township, merges personal and professional pursuits, forging a new path for engaged citizens that want to see a society cleared of racial injustice and mass incarceration. Transformation Yoga Project also focuses on the impact of incarceration on our society, raising funds to provide yoga and mindfulness programs specifically geared to those recovering from trauma. And this is just a small cross-section of the inspiring work happening in so many ways, by so many of the members of our Natural Awakenings community who are working at the forefront of the local, progressive, holistic health and wellness movements. Whatever you are working toward, if your goal is health and healing of people or planet, Natural Awakenings is with you, this and every month, offering you the camaraderie and courage to be the modern-day change-makers that you are. Together we are “Making the Awakening” in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

eventbriefs Farm Fresh Film Series Continues with the Doylestown Food Market

T

he Doylestown Food Market, along with Delaware Valley (DelVal) University and Rodale Institute, is presenting the documentary Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields in honor of Veterans Day. Doors open for the event at 6:30 p.m., on November 10, at DelVal’s Life Sciences Building. Ground Operations is an award-winning documentary and social action campaign that champions the growing network of combat veterans transitioning into careers as sustainable farmers, ranchers and artisan food producers. The campaign is aimed at helping military veterans interested in farming to get started and build their resources. Ground Operations works to support veterans that wish to create healthy new lives for themselves and food security for communities across the United States. “We are very proud to be hosting this event,” says Emily Boell, coordinator of the Organic Farming Certificate Program that is offered in partnership between DelVal and the Rodale Institute. “We encourage anyone in the community that is interested in organic agriculture, local food and our veterans to join us.” There will be a panel discussion following the film that includes California-based filmmaker and director Dulanie Ellis and two local veterans that farm. The event is open to the public and guests do not need to register in advance. There is no charge for DelVal faculty, staff, students or veterans.

The expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on November 5, and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., on November 6, in Horsham. Centered around various healing modalities that the public can learn about and experience firsthand, such as reiki, pranic healing, EFT, reflexology, sound healing and shiatsu massage, the AWAKEN Healing Expo invites the community to an uplifting weekend of yoga, meditation and even a Circle of Miracles Sunday Service. Visitors can look forward to free admission, free talks every 30 minutes and free mini-workshops, with access to more in-depth group events during the expo for only $10, or with a day pass for $20 and a weekend pass for $35. Three 20-minute healing or reading sessions can also be booked as a $50 package. Local Wellness and Recovery Center Provides Options for Treatment-Resistant Depression

N

ew Vitae Wellness and Recovery is providing readers the opportunity to learn more about their array of holistic behavioral health services, including deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) to treat symptoms of depression, by offering monthly information sessions at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Sessions are held at the Recovery Center at 16 South Main Street, in Quakertown. Used with or without antidepressant medications, dTMS is an evidence-based, FDA-approved service that uses pulses to stimulate parts of the brain associated with the experience of depression. Shown to be safe and well-tolerated, this service permits users to experience relief from long-term symptoms with fewer side effects. dTMS is provided five days a week over four to six weeks in 20-minute sessions, and individuals are awake and alert during their appointments. Users are able to continue their daily routines while participating in services. Most insurances, including Medicare, cover all or part of the costs associated with dTMS treatment. In order to begin services, users should have a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder and a recommendation from their physician. The Recovery Center can assist with initiating services and working with insurance providers. Information session attendees will hear more about the treatment and other holistic offerings, see the device, and speak to staff and service users. Readers missing the November 1 session are encouraged to contact New Vitae and pre-register (requested) for the December 6 session. Cost: Free. healthbriefs he human brain does not function optimally in society’s noise-filled environment. The brain, like the body, needs rest to function, and that comes with silence. A recent study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience discovered that the brain is able to integrate both internal and external information into a “conscious workspace” when resting. Constant distractions and noises can detract from the brain’s ability to process critical information. Noise also elevates stress hormone levels within the brain. Research published earlier in Psychological Science examined the effects that the relocation of the main Munich airport, in Germany, had on children’s health and cognition. Gary W. Evans, researcher and professor of human ecology at Cornell University, notes that when exposed to constant noise, children develop a stress response that causes them to ignore it. The study’s subjects tuned out both harmful sounds and stimuli that they should be paying attention to, including speech. Silence has the opposite effect, releasing tension in brain and body. Exposure to chronic noise can also hinder children’s cognitive development, according to a study from the World Health Organization and the European Commission Joint Research Centre; this includes language skills and reading ability. To help counter modern noise pollution, attention restoration theory suggests that individuals placed in environments with lower levels of sensory input can recover some of the cognitive abilities they have lost.

Gut Bacteria Linked to Toddler Temperament

O

Pressmaster/Shutterstock.com

hio State University researchers have discovered a correlation between bacteria in the gut and behavior in toddlers. Scientists studied the bacterial microbes in stool samples from 77 girls and boys between the ages of 18 months and 27 months, while mothers filled out a questionnaire describing their children’s level of emotional reactivity. The study found that positive behavioral traits occurred more frequently in children with the most diverse types of gut bacteria. These included mood, curiosity, sociability and impulsivity. The correlation was particularly strong in boys. Lisa Christian, Ph.D., a researcher with the Ohio State Institute for Behavioral Medicine research, and her co-author, Microbiologist Michael Bailey, Ph.D., plan to use the information to help uncover some mysteries related to the origin of chronic illness. “There is substantial evidence that intestinal bacteria interact with stress hormones; the same hormones that have been implicated in chronic illnesses like obesity and asthma,” explains Christian. “A toddler’s temperament gives us a good idea of how they react to stress. This information, combined with an analysis of their gut microbiome, could ultimately help us to detect and prevent chronic health issues [from developing] earlier.” Source: Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science

Silence De-Stresses the Brain

Acupressure Eases Fatigue in Cancer Survivors

B

reast cancer survivors are often plagued by chronic fatigue that lasts long after their treatment is finished. They have few options to relieve the condition, but acupressure shows promise. A study published this summer in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that acupressure can significantly improve two symptoms of fatigue experienced by breast cancer survivors: sleep quality and quality of life. The researchers tested 424 women that had completed cancer treatments at least a year prior to the study. They were divided into three groups—one self-administered relaxing acupressure and another stimulating acupressure, while the control group followed a conventional care plan. After six weeks, fatigue was reduced from 70 percent to 43 percent among those receiving acupressure, with two-thirds of the women in the acupressure groups reaching levels of fatigue considered normal. The relaxing acupressure group showed substantial improvements in sleep quality compared with the conventional care group at week six, but the two groups reached parity at week 10. The relaxing acupressure group was the only one that showed improvements in quality of life, making it a reasonable, low-cost option for managing fatigue symptoms.

Conventional Grocery Chains Go Organic

News and resources to inspire concerned citizens to work together in building a healthier, stronger society that benefits all.

Dangers vs. Benefits of Pet Marijuana

As of June, half of the states and the District of Columbia have legalized the use of medical marijuana for humans. People wonder if it’s also suited for pets, too, and need to investigate the parameters and consequences carefully. “It’s not legal in any state for veterinarians to prescribe or recommend medical marijuana,” says Dr. Carol Osborne, owner of Ohio’s Chagrin Falls Veterinary Center & Pet Clinic. “Done properly, it could have applications, but it’s not standardized, dosage amounts are unknown and without U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation, there’s no guarantee what you think you’re buying is what you get. “Dogs that get into the stash or sneak-eat marijuana-laced food can experience wobbling when walking, trembling and potential seizures,” Osborne notes. “I haven’t heard of any cases of death, but as with any prescription drug, practice responsible ownership by keeping it out of the reach of curious children and pets.” “THC [tetrahydrocannabinol] in marijuana produces the high,” explains Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Robert Silver, author of Medical Marijuana & Your Pet: The Definitive Guide. “Dogs are extremely sensitive to THC, much more so than any other species studied.” Silver believes there are uses for cannabinoid oil, derived from hemp, which has very low levels of THC; pet owners in an end-of-life situation with no hope of recovery have used it to ease pain, stimulate appetite and add quality to final days. Stoned Doggies

The Kroger grocery chain, with nearly 2,500 U.S. stores, including subsidiaries Ralphs, Fry’s, King Soopers and Food 4 Less, has decided to go all in on the organic food market as a follow-up to the 2012 release of its Simple Truth brand of organic foods. Kroger President Michael Ellis says, “We’re really just answering the customer’s call for more and better,” giving Whole Foods Market more competition. Walmart has also begun to satisfy the growing health concerns of its shoppers by integrating organic options in its supermarkets. Now the challenge is for organic farming—which intentionally works to minimize agricultural impacts on the health of people and the planet—to meet the greater demand nationwide for healthier foods. Although implementation will vary depending on climate, experts advise that it begins with farms adopting healthy soil practices. It’s up to consumers to keep the momentum going. Germany to Ban Fracking Permanently

The German government has ruled to ban the practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for shale gas in the country, but will allow test drilling in certain circumstances, reports Reuters. The industry has lobbied to continue fracking, which involves blasting chemicals and water into underground rock formations to release trapped gas, but strong opposition has persisted throughout the nation, with a powerful green lobby warning of possible risks to drinking water. Germany follows France and Bulgaria, which have already permanently banned fracking.

The 140-year-old zoo in Buenos Aires is shutting down to give the animals a better life. Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta agrees with activists that keeping wild animals in captivity and on display is degrading, so the zoo’s 2,500 animals will be moved to more suitable living environments in nature reserves around the country. Older animals and those too sick to be relocated will remain in their current home, but not displayed. The 45-acre zoo will be transformed into an eco-park to give children a place to learn how to take care of and relate with the different species. It also will provide refuge and rehabilitation for animals rescued from illegal trafficking.

Co-Ops Come Up

In the Birthplace of the Cooperative Movement, Residents Embrace a Time-Tested Model by Carrie Jackson and Karen G. Meshkov

I

n a world that seems to be getting bigger and busier every day, many people in the Philadelphia area and across the country are turning to cooperative businesses to form deeper connections with their community, and to feel a sense of ownership and control over the products and services that are a part of their lives. There are currently 30,000 member-owned cooperative businesses functioning in the U.S., serving 350 million member households. Cooperatively run businesses and organizations are nothing new to the Philadelphia area—Benjamin Franklin founded the country’s first in 1752. The Philadelphia Contributionship insurance company was established by firefighters on the premise that members would share the risks of insuring against fire damage. The business is still in operation today, and visitors can tour the historic site and museum in Old City. Clearly, this is an idea with staying power.

The term “co-op” is a popular shorthand for “cooperatively run business”. Such a business is owned and operated by its members, instead of a single proprietor or corporation. There is an emphasis on a democratic engagement, and on building community cohesion and wealth, irrespective of its size or structure. Food markets and farms, credit unions, workers councils, housing communities, art galleries, utilities, schools: they can all be organized in this way. The “Seven Cooperative Principles”, as they are known, are the philosophical guidelines that govern all of the cooperative organizations in the U.S. and abroad. These include voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; members’ economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training and information; cooperation among cooperatives; and concern for community. Here in the birthplace of cooperative businesses, what’s old is new again. NABuxMont.com

Cooperatively run businesses and organizations are nothing new to the Philadelphia area — Benjamin Franklin founded the country’s first in 1752. One needs only to look at the Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance (PACA), an organization representing over 120 operating co-ops and eight more in the process of formation, to see that this colonial-born business model is right on time for modern-day residents. Four area co-ops offer insights on how they apply the shared cooperative principles driving their growing organizations, and what makes them unique as they strive to meet the needs of the distinct communities they serve.

CREEKSIDE CO-OP

Creekside Co-Op is a member-owned food market that opened in Cheltenham Township in 2012. With over 2,300 members and growing, Vice President Jeff Cohen says that much of what they do involves keeping up with their mission of providing products and services that are responsive to the values of its ownership, and fostering connections among the people of its diverse community. “Our priority is the needs and wants of the members, with a focus on sustainability. We want people to be able to get all their basic products at Creekside and know that they are helping to support their local community. We also provide niche local items, such as high quality, sustainable seafood, fresh hummus and kosher hot sauce. We offer catering and grab-andgo items, so people can get off the train and pick up dinner on their way home,” says Cohen.

AMBLER FOOD CO-OP

Ambler Food Co-Op, which is moving forward to open a free-standing store in downtown Ambler, has a strong focus on bettering the physical, social and economic strength of the local community. “Many of our members don’t have cars, or they are low-income. They need a place that is easily accessible and isn’t taking money away from other local businesses,” says Katherine Niesen, Ambler membership coordinator. Local businesses, individual consumers and families are all encouraged to be involved. Ambler President Kathleen Casey adds, “Currently, members get discounts at over 30 local businesses. As owners, each member household makes a real contribution to their community, because without them the co-op doesn’t exist. Collectively, members have tremendous local impact, shaping the co-op according to their needs and creating a motivation to establish a great, community-focused, sustainable business. In other words, co-ops are special because they epitomize strong business, with community values locked in at its core.”

Meeting Basic Needs Komal Ahmad was unaware that her single act of kindness in simply offering to share her lunch with a homeless veteran in 2011 while she was attending the UniKomal Ahmad versity of California, Berkeley, would lead to a multiplying mission to feed America’s hungry. His heartfelt expression of gratitude for his first meal in three days sparked an epiphany: Her school was regularly throwing away thousands of pounds of food while neighbors were going hungry. Today, Ahmad is the founder and CEO of Copia, an app that matches nonprofits serving in-need veterans, children, women and others with companies that have leftover gourmet food. Boscarino’s experience in business development and sales, combined with her disdain for litter, led her to found the nonprofit Clean Memphis, which began in 2008 with volunteer crews picking up litter. In recent years, the initiative’s community-wide strategy has expanded to involve local governments, businesses, neighborhoods, faith-based organizations and 20 local “sustainable schools”. In 2017, Project Green Fork will become a part of Clean Memphis. Throughout two decades of educational activism, John G. Heim’s passion for clean water as a human right John G. Heim has not waned.

The founder and leader of The SWFL Clean Water Movement, headquartered in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, persisted even when many business owners considered him a nuisance, driving off tourists. As infestations of blue-green algae blooms have reached emergency levels, Heim’s ongoing grassroots campaign to increase awareness of water quality issues that’s backed by social media recently brought him to Washington, D.C., to make his case before Congress. The nonprofit’s 18,000 members have succeeded in bringing national attention to the thick muck now plaguing both Florida coasts. We are a community of possibilities, not a community of problems. Community exists for the sake of belonging, and takes its identity from the gifts, generosity and accountability of its citizens. We currently have all the resources required to create an alternative future. ~Peter Block, Community: The Structure of Belonging years, she served as president of the National Nutritional Foods Association during crucial phases of the 1992 to 1994 fight to successfully pass the Dietary Martie Whittiken Supplement Health and Education Act to preserve consumer choices. The author of The Probiotic Cure also helped found the Texas Health Freedom Coalition to protect citizens’ rights to choose alternative medical treatment in her state. Whittiken says, “My work is a labor of love. I have no interest in becoming famous or well known unless it contributes to getting the job done.” On a 2006 medical mission to Haiti, Gigi Pomerantz, a licensed nurse practitioner at the Aurora Sinai Medical Center, in Milwaukee, discovered the impact Gigi Pomerantz of a lack of clean water and sanitation as her four-person team treated 1,400 patients for worms, stomach problems, diarrhea and poor appetite. Two years later, she founded Youthaiti, where she serves as executive director. The nonprofit helps rural Haitians build composting toilets and develop

As an Emmy Award-winning trumpeter, composer, educator and co-founder, conductor and artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP), Orbert Davis is dedicated to multigenre projects. His collaborative research in 2012 while in Cuba on a people-to-people exchange accompanied by fellow musicians and River North Dance Chicago’s Artistic Director Frank Chaves (now retired) proved to be a multifaceted boon.

It generated the philharmonic’s Havana Blue live performance in 2013 and ignited a weeklong cultural Orbert Davis exchange with Cuba’s Universidad Ciudad de las Artes (ISA) during his return trip for the Havana International Jazz Festival in 2014. President Barak Obama’s announcement of the normalization of Cuban/U.S. diplomatic relations opened up the possibility for a continuing CJP/ISA relationship, as well as their 2015 landmark partnered event when 37 ISA students traveled to Chicago to perform Scenes from Life: Cuba at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Davis promises more such events to come. All of these individuals represent a small percentage of the game-changers actively moving to create an alternative future. Estés observes, “What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts; adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group that will not give up during the first, second or hundredth gale.”

Matthew Pillischer Creates His Own Niche

C

ritically acclaimed filmmaker, artist, musician, actor, lawyer, organizer, podcaster: Matthew Pillischer has the sort of talent that’s hard to pin down. Binding it all together is a commitment to justice and a better world.

What are you working on now?

My new project is called The Thread: A Podcast Against Mass Incarceration. This work is like a thread, connecting people and ideas and activities from around the country to try to bring everyone together in ways that can strengthen the movement.

Is this a follow-up to Broken on All Sides, your documentary film about racism and the criminal justice system?

Yes. I’m finding podcasting to be a very flexible form in terms of time and resources. I also really like conducting interviews over the phone or Skype— it’s easier to forget an audio recorder than a camera in your face, so it makes for more genuine conversations.

$15 minimum wage and a union. It was like old-school union organizing, finding ways to sneak in and talk to workers under the bosses’ noses about fighting store by store, city by city, and on the state and federal levels too.

This must have been a very different view from working in employment law.

It’s about trying different ways to fight for decent-paying jobs. The employment law I did right after law school was advocating for workers with criminal records. It’s often legal for employers to discriminate against applicants who’ve been convicted of a crime. But racial disparity in the criminal justice system is so bad that this practice, if the crime is unrelated to the job, amounts to racial discrimination. Organizing is a better tool than law—you can organize anyone, anywhere!

How does your art inform your activism?

I’ve been an artist all my life. I became an activist after 9/11. I started using art as activism, making posters and politiTell us about your involvement cal paintings and stencil work. I wrote political songs and performed them with the Fight for 15 campaign. with my band, High Hearts. year there I began using film to advocate around legal and policy issues.

With this diverse skill set, is it hard to find your niche and make a living?

It can be challenging—sometimes people see me as overqualified; other times they see me as not specialized enough. I think it’s important to look at the whole picture of how an issue fits into society and use multiple tools to chip away at problems. That often means I’m building a project from the ground up, which means it’s difficult to assign me a specific title: one week I’m performing at a concert fundraiser, and the next week I’m presenting to the Justice Department!

Has becoming a parent affected your activism?

Sometimes people turn inward and focus only on their families, but parenthood has made me look at the world and ask what it’ll be like for my child. Having an African-American son makes the fight against racism very personal. What will my child be up against as he grows up? In some ways I feel like things are getting worse, but I also see more and more people coming together and waking up, and that gives me hope for a more promising future. Dr. Andrew Persky Innovates the Path to Pain Relief

I

t takes just a few minutes speaking with Dr. Andrew Persky, owner of LifeAligned Upper Cervical Treatment Center, to realize he is not a “typical” chiropractor, nor are his treatment and results typical. His revolutionary work in precise realignment of the craniocervical junction (joint between the head and neck) is changing the way doctors and patients throughout the tri-state area think about pain and how to address its underlying cause without drugs, surgery or their negative side effects. He is changing the lives of people that had lost hope of ever finding relief from debilitating conditions such as chronic headaches, seizures, tremors, post-concussion brain fog and fibromyalgia.

How can this treatment lead to better lifelong health? Whether a person has noticeable symptoms or not, realignment of the craniocervical junction can improve their neurological and biomechanical health. Patients often comment about experiencing changes in their body completely unrelated to why they came to me. They feel healthier overall. If it can provide profound improvements for celebrities such as Montel Williams, who had nerve pain in his legs due to multiple sclerosis, or former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon, who suffered from brain fog and blinding headaches, it can conceivably help everyone function better.

You’re very passionate about this. How do you bring your message to people outside of your practice?

I’m passionate about this because the waiting rooms of neurologists and pain management clinics are overwhelmed by people in pain, and they deserve to know that an effective treatment exists that might help them without the need for drugs or surgery. When I’m not seeing patients, you’ll often find me speaking to hospitals, medical doctors, community leaders, corporate employees and even people on the street, explaining what I do. In the midst of an opioid epidemic and skyrocketing healthcare costs, this treatment is not only a game changer—for many it’s a life changer.

LifeAligned Upper Cervical Treatment Center is located at 1432 Easton Rd., Ste. 4A. For more information, call 215-4914200 or visit LifeAlignedHealth.com. See ad, page 8.

What makes the LifeAligned treatment unique?

What people need to understand is that my treatment is very different from traditional chiropractic. No “cracking” or “twisting” of the neck is necessary. It is gentle, much more sophisticated and has the power to change the lives of people living with chronic pain and other issues. For example, my patient, Carolyn, suffered for six years with debilitating pain, tremors and incontinence due to a spinal cord injury. Now she lives a vital, pain-free life. Then there’s Paula who had daily intense headaches for almost 30 years. She had tried various medications, medical devices and surgeries without any relief. But, after only two treatments in my office, she experienced her first pain-free day. This treatment clearly deserves serious consideration before resorting to surgery or a lifetime of pain pills.

Why is your treatment so effective?

My work addresses the underlying cause of a patient’s health issue, not just their symptoms. Drugs and surgery are often intended to suppress pain rather than resolve the cause of it. That is backwards thinking. MRI and other medical technologies show that when the head is out of alignment with the top of the neck, vital nerves and blood vessels passing through that area can be negatively affected. My treatment is designed to reestablish proper neurological and biomechanical physiology. Once that is achieved, the brain and body are free to heal from within and cease producing symptoms. It is not uncommon for a patient to experience almost immediate changes.

Lowering Overhead, Customizing Care Karen L. Smith Reimagines the Therapy Model

I

ndustry disrupters like Uber and Airbnb have changed the way customers shop for lodging or for a lift by matching services to potential clients through crowdsourcing. A similar concept is behind Full Living: A Psychotherapy Practice, founded and directed by Karen L. Smith, MSS, LCSW. Smith is setting her own trend by building a local network of personally selected and supervised experts in mental health that are then carefully matched with potential clients.

What makes your business model unique to the mental health care space?

The brilliance of businesses working in this “sharing economy” is their innovative use of people’s pre-existing resources. We took that idea and decided to apply it to therapy. We identified a large number of clinicians in the Philadelphia area that had an existing resource they were up for sharing—namely their own practices. These professionals have existing practices, with their own offices, their own

How did Full Living come about?

As a national educator on issues of gender/sexuality/ orientation/family constellations and, more recently, educating other therapists on enriching their work with analytic theory, I have always secured more referrals than my 20-year private practice could absorb. Rather than simply referring them out to other clinicians, I decided to create a group practice that relies exclusively on seasoned clinicians throughout the city and surrounding areas that I have hand-selected for excellence. This offers a reliable network of psychotherapy services.

What kinds of services does Full Living provide?

Full Living offers a full range of modalities, including individual, couples, family and group therapies from experienced therapists with very different backgrounds, educations, specialties, personalities and styles. These differences, along with my personal initial consult with the client seeking therapy, allow me to make a meaningful match. We assist in coordinating psychiatric services, psychological testing and referral services for other needs, including nutritional counseling and EMDR treatment.

malpractice insurance and clinical supervision. What they lacked was simply an adequate number of referrals to keep their practices full. Like Airbnb and Uber, however, it is not merely a referral service. The client continues to be a Full Living client, but under the care of the individual therapist. Nor is this a traditional fee-forservice system, since, given our low overhead due to shareable resources, the bulk of the client fee goes to the therapist.

NABuxMont.com NABuxMont.com

What is Full Living’s approach to treatment?

We know the difference between counseling and therapy. Counseling has its goals to support and validate; to provide advice, suggestions, resources; and to offer motivation for change. Those tactics are great; however, they are not therapy. The terms “therapy” or “psychotherapy” should be reserved for a more complex intervention. Meg Miller Inspires Her Corner of Wynnewood

W

ynnewood resident and Natural Awakenings reader Meg Miller posts lawn signs with inspirational messages on her yard on a busy thoroughfare where Penn Road meets the Montgomery Avenue residential and Lancaster Avenue business districts.

Most lawn signs we see are about civic issues. Your signs are much more personal, asking the driver to consider a certain spiritual idea or question. What’s the backstory here?

Eight years ago, there were signs all over my neighborhood about redistricting the high schools. Then a Fast Signs store opened up around the corner from where I live. One day, when I was standing at my kitchen sink doing the dishes, I looked out my window and saw the discarded sign from a play my daughter had been in. All of a sudden the thought popped

You have been posting a new set of signs every week for eight years. What keeps you motivated? I continue to make new signs and post them weekly because we all have so much love to give one another, but often it doesn’t get expressed until there is a disaster. It’s my desire to inspire people to feel more deeply and access who they are beyond the tasks of everyday life.

How have people responded to the signage? I really liked the one that said, “We Are Human Beings, Not Human Doings!”

After several months of posting the signs on my front lawn I started receiving notes of thanks in my mailbox. Now I get notes in my mailbox regularly. They let me know that the signs have helped them with issues they were struggling with. Many people tell me that they purposely drive down my street to see the sign of the week. That knowledge and experience has been profoundly enriching for me, and I want to share it with as many people as I can reach.

LOCAL GAME CHANGERS

Signs of Love

into my head, “Hey, I could put my own signs out!” I sat down and started listing all the words and concepts related to my spiritual path: love, gratitude, compassion and peace, among others. Then I began sculpting the words into phrases that could fit on the signs. I would sit and drop deeply inside myself and see what was important that day, what wanted to be expressed. Sometimes the inspiration came from the spiritual book I was reading, and often it was related to what I was studying in the Diamond Approach group I attend.

LOCAL GAME CHANGERS

Where the Sidewalk Starts Randy Garbin Wants Walkable Communities

A

What are more walkable towns doing differently?

walkable community is a healthier community, says Jenkintown resident Randy Garbin, who leads his community by turning the intricacies of local policy into opportunities for residents to effect change. His website, WalkableJenkintown. com, is a call to action, putting the spotlight on Borough issues and offering practical solutions that make the pedestrian the priority.

Like the rest of Pennsylvania, Jenkintown requires its homeowners to take direct financial responsibility for the repair of their abutting sidewalks and curbs, all of which belong to the Borough. This ordinance results in an over-priced, haphazard patchwork of sidewalk styles, conditions and qualities. Some towns have applied more creative and equitable approaches. The city of Ithaca, New York, for instance, assesses a flat fee of $70 per year for most residents, less than half of what we currently pay for trash pickup, to fund a municipal program that maintains and fixes the city’s sidewalks. For most Jenkintown residents, this amounts to a tax increase of less than five percent.

How can people get involved locally?

When did you become interested in walkable communities?

After years of traveling the country, visiting hundreds of other communities and learning how they have thrived or declined, I found myself in a unique position to compare our progress in Jenkintown against similar neighborhoods. In the summer of 2015, my wife and I embarked on efforts to change a local ordinance that proved ineffective to any walkable community.

Why are walkable communities important?

No place is perfect, and they all have their quirks, but when they do things right, it shows in their downtowns, their parks, their schools and certainly their streetscapes. We opted to live in Jenkintown precisely for its commitment to a traditional development pattern. Its street grid features a charm that is a major draw for its residents, and much of a community’s charm comes from its walkability.

25

$

People and businesses seeking to invest in a walkable community should demand their municipality embrace public goods as public responsibilities. The budgets of these communities will need to reflect that policy and place a high priority on the quality of its pedestrian experience. We, as advocates for that experience, must press this point with far more force than we have in the past.

How can people start a movement like this?

Start by thinking, “Maybe we can improve,” and be happy to do your part in a shared effort. A better planned, more equitable approach will certainly bring a community greater benefits than it has now. Randy Garbin is a resident of Jenkintown and former publisher of Roadside Magazine, which explored the back roads and main streets of America and the culture of the great American diner. Edward Humes on the High Cost of Transportation Small Consumer Choices Have Big Impacts by Randy Kambic

E

dward Humes investigates the origins and impacts of the expensive and complex process that brings us everyday products and items in his new book Door to Door: The Magnificent, Maddening, Mysterious World of Transportation. His latest work, which also covers our love affair with cars, is popularizing the eco-conscious term, “transportation footprint”. Aligned with this, he recommends a move to driverless cars to save lives and fuel. In an earlier book, Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Southern California journalist examined the causes and effects of waste. Solutions are showcased by how institutions and families are consciously reducing their wasteful ways.

What are some everyday impacts of the “door-to-door machine” you write about? Transportation is embedded in our lives, both in our personal things and our travel. It can take 30,000 miles to get our morning coffee to the kitchen, with another 165,000 miles attached to all the components of the coffee pot, water, energy and packaging—a worldwide mix involving trains, planes, boats and trucks. Unprecedented amounts of transportation are embedded in everything we do and touch, with many hidden costs to our environment, economy and traffic. Take the world of online retailing. That “buy it now” button seems so

convenient, but it’s also a traffic jam generator. Each click births a new truck trip. What used to be a single truckload of goods delivered efficiently to a store or mall now demands hundreds of single-item deliveries to far-flung homes.

Which transportation footprint surprised you the most in researching Door to Door? The smartphone is a paradox, in that it has reduced our transportation footprint in some ways because of all the separate devices it has replaced, from navigation in cars to calculators to cameras. Phones also empower a transportationfree option for online banking and bill paying, eliminating all sorts of trips in the physical world. On the flip side, making and assembling smartphone components requires a lot of back-and-forth transport between many countries because no one can make the whole “widget”. With its many raw materials, rare earth minerals and manufactured components, we’re talking about an overall transportation footprint for one phone that’s equivalent to a round trip to the moon; a phone that users will trade in for a newer model in just a few years.

What’s a particularly negative impact of the huge distances involved in today’s movement of goods? Cargo container ships create immense amounts of pollution. About 6,000 container ships worldwide ship 90 percent

of consumer goods. Natural Resources Defense Council data show that the smog and particulate emissions from just 160 of these vessels equal that of all of the cars in the world. If the cargo fleet were a country, its carbon emissions would exceed Germany’s, the world’s fourth-largest economy, according to the European Commission. Cargo ship carbon emissions are projected to rise to about 18 percent of the global total in the next 25 years if our appetite for goods continues to grow at current rates.

What are the consequences of the U.S. ranking 16th worldwide in infrastructure quality? Americans are under the illusion that we pay high taxes to build and maintain roads, bridges and rails. However, as a portion of our gross domestic product, we invest about one-fifth of what China does and the poor results are apparent. We have a $3.6 trillion backlog in needed modernization. This drags down the economy and increases harmful emissions through shipping delays and rush-hour jams, as well as raising road safety concerns.

How can we each lessen our “transportation footprint”? We have power as individuals, families and communities to make a difference. Americans walk less than almost any other people on Earth. A Los Angeles study showed that half of its residents’ daily trips are less than three miles, with many under one mile, which is crazy. Using alternative transportation for just 10 percent of those trips would have major positive impacts. Far fewer children walk or bike to school than in the recent past, even as we face a youth obesity crisis. We can also adjust when and how we drive; half the cars on the road during rush hour are not job-related. Driving at other times would ease traffic for everyone and reduce traffic jams, emissions and crashes. All of this is something we could easily change—and that many other countries have changed—with substantial health, economic and traffic benefits. Transformation Yoga Project Needs You

Y

oga means “union”, and when yogis unite, the strength of the community multiplies. This month, Transformation Yoga Project (TYP) presents an opportunity to join forces with partner studios in support of its annual fundraising campaign, “Yogi Transformers”, to transform 10,000 local lives affected by trauma, addiction and incarceration. TYP is a nonprofit organization that teaches trauma-sensitive and mindfulness-based yoga via partnerships with local addiction treatment centers, prisons, Veterans Health Administration hospitals and yoga studios. During the month of November, Transformation Yoga Project and its partner studios will seek donations to fund its programs for 2017, with the goal of raising $50,000. Donors can give as little as $5 to impact one life or as much as $5,000, which pays for one year of classes, to impact 1,000 lives. “The larger goal of TYP is to make yoga accessible to people affected by trauma,” says Blakey Elkart Kornfeld, an instructor at TYP specializing in trauma-sensitive yoga. Kornfeld leads two donation-based, trauma-sensitive classes at partner studio Twisters Wellness Centers and is hosting a Gratitude class on Thanksgiving day. Proceeds go to TYP and other nonprofit programs that support addiction recovery. Yogi Transformers can boost TYP’s transformational powers this month in the only major fundraiser it holds each year. TYP will also participate in #Giving Tuesday, on November 29, as part of a global day of online giving. Donations collected go directly back into the communities of Montgomery and Bucks counties through increased programming and the expansion of existing programs.

Ways in which yogi superheros can flex their muscles in support of TYP during the campaign are many. By forwarding campaign emails to clients, sharing and retweeting posts made from TYP’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, especially around #GivingTuesday, or connecting with a local partner studio or instructor, anyone can be a part of this heroic effort. “We always need mats,” adds Kornfeld. “We let people take them so they can continue their practice at home, which is great, but then we need another mat!” Natural Awakenings readers are encouraged to use their powers for good during this month of giving thanks and save a life, or 10,000, in need of transformational healing. Send checks to: P.O. Box 762, Kennett Square, PA 19348, or click “DONATE” at Facebook.com/TransformationYoga Project or TransformationYogaProject. org. S

tephen Dinan, founder and CEO of The Shift Network, is a champion of the transpartisan movement that seeks to transcend America’s current political climate to realize greater unity and understanding. His new book, Sacred America, Sacred World: Fulfilling Our Mission in Service to All, offers innovative, practical solutions for engaging citizens in an emerging whole. Dinan has forwarded thinking in his work with the Institute of Noetic Sciences, where he helped shape the Shift in Action and One Minute Shift programs, and with the Esalen Center for Theory & Research, a think tank he helped create to explore human potential frontiers. He is also an active member of the Evolutionary Leadership and Transformational Leadership councils.

What political problem tops the list if we’re to make progress on anything? We all know that American politics suffers from extreme polarization. Just as the middle class has faded away from our economy, the bipartisan “middle” has dropped out of our political process. In the last two decades, moderates have become far less prominent, giving way to ideologues on both sides of the aisle. As a result, Congress is virtually unable to legislate, because

politicians on the left and right insist they have all the answers. They often refuse to work with the president if he is from the other party. This childish behavior is a far cry from the bipartisan approach to solving problems that once made this country great. Our country is falling apart and we need to renew ourselves by finding a sacred vision of national unity. The fast-growing transpartisan movement offers an answer that can be aided by perspectives of transpersonal psychology and a visionary spiritual dimension drawn from wisdom traditions of the East and West.

How is transpartisan best defined? Transpartisan means that Americans can rise above damaging divisions. It provides hope that if we supply the right intention, we can hold to a vision that honors the ideals of a wide range of viewpoints. No one can be 100 percent right or 100 percent wrong, and we transcend limiting conservative and liberal categories by using dialogue and maturity in embracing the truths of all parties, while leaving behind their excesses and errors. We can belong to any party and claim an important piece of the truth; a singular truth we stand for, such as liberty or social justice or economic

True, lasting answers to extremely complex problems require the best thinking of all parties and ideologies. NABuxMont.com

growth, but it represents only a personal selection from a larger set of sacred American principles. To attain insight into these principles, we must move to an enlightened vision that honors all political perspectives, seeing each as a valuable, yet incomplete contribution toward the emerging whole.

Why have you called for a sacred America? “Sacred” is a word that binds us together in the mystery of life and links us into a single human family in which ultimately no one is our enemy. A sacred worldview leads to a life filled with respect and reverence. It informs and enables us as we reach for our highest destiny as a country, not built on a desire to be number one, but a humble sense of calling, animated by a spirit of service to all. America is being called to explore new frontiers politically, economically and spiritually, in service to our own citizens and the world. We are to embrace a path away from the waste and tragedy of war and toward universal health, sustainability and prosperity. It requires the best of both progressive and conservative values and a collaborative style of politics that seeks higher ground. Global accords and councils will replace the endless posturing of every military era.

What have you, as a progressive, learned from conservatives? Conservatives tend to focus on preserving what has worked in the past, which is a useful function. In the human body, we have strong elements required for health that basically

protect its homeostasis. Too much change happening too quickly can be dangerous to us. Conservatives often play the same role in society, minimizing the risk of chaotic change and preserving core values, commitments and culture. I’ve found that embracing conservative values and perspectives is a good form of cross-training in my role as a spiritually based CEO, where it’s imperative that I not risk everything on each new idea. A moderate path draws upon the best of conservative perspectives while opening to new possibilities for innovation and cultural expression, which tends to be a focus of progressives.

How can we replace political gridlock with a more perfect union? The ultimate solution comes in personally building bridges of curiosity, respect and understanding, and recognizing that true, lasting answers to extremely complex problems require the best thinking of all parties and ideologies so that some hybridization of solutions happens. We may not come to consensus on major issues, but we can come into deep dialogue and human exchange. Extending a hand of friendship across the aisle is ultimately one of the most important things we can do as citizens. The women members of the Senate have led the way in doing this, often creating breakthroughs through their personal connections with members of the other major party. hat’s how Patrick Kiragu speaks of his work with the Africa Yoga Project (AYP). Life in bustling Nairobi, Kenya, can be stressful—and for poor youth and those from marginalized communities, making a living isn’t easy. When a person is putting every ounce of time and energy into getting by, health and wellness just can’t be a top priority. That’s where AYP comes in. By fostering the yoga and wellness industry in Nairobi, they’re helping young Kenyans build their communities’ health and economies and improve their own lives—including their health, their incomes and their own empowerment— in the process. Founded in 2007 by yoga teacher and native New Yorker Paige Elenson, AYP has grown into a large and thriving organization. Elenson was inspired to create the project when she visited Kenya and watched some talented young Nairobians perform handstands and other physical feats on the street. Their prowess reminded her of yogis—

but when she realized that Nairobi had little in the way of yoga studios or teachers, she knew what she needed to do. Elenson’s efforts attracted the attention of U.S. yoga icon Baron Baptiste, who was moved to provide financial and project creation support. With the support of Baptiste and his community, the AYP organization facilitated the first yoga teacher training in Kenya. It now employs local youth to teach full-time in their own communities. Since its inception, the program has trained more than 200 yoga teachers in Baptiste yoga, which improves flexibility, reduces stress and helps the body achieve optimal weight. The teachers, Elenson says, were previously un- or under-employed youth from marginalized communities; today they earn a self-sustaining income as leaders that have the ability to build healthy, wellness-promoting communities. “Yoga taught me to be of service,” says Kiragu, who is now a Baptiste Power Certified Instructor and trips

“This program is about integrity that empowers a bond and accountability between me and my fellow brother, who wants for his country and community what I want for my country and community—compassion, love and peace.” NABuxMont.com

coordinator with AYP. “Today I empower new Africa Yoga Project teachers—not only those in Nairobi, but those who are in the rest of African countries. I completed teacher training in 2009, and since then I have become certified in all levels of Baptiste power yoga. I teach at yoga studios, gyms and in people’s homes. Yoga has become my career; yoga is my life.” AYP programs now offer more than 300 free classes per week to over 6,000 residents across Nairobi, including popup and pay-what-you-can community classes. The program simultaneously builds schools and funds education, critical operations and environmental endeavors. Its crown jewel is the Shine Center, in Diamond Plaza, which offers a wide variety of workshops, yoga teacher training, and empowerment and leadership education. For those outside Africa, there are several ways to get involved. Yoga teachers can host a “karma class” and donate the proceeds, or host a fundraising event or “Yoga Jam” with the help of an AYP Ambassador. For a more personal connection, a 12-month mentorship program pairs yoga instructors around the world with an AYP teacher in exchange for a monthly contribution of $125. Mentors and mentees share monthly Skype conversations and email exchanges, with a new theme each month. In the words of mentor Mark White, “This program is about integrity that empowers a bond and accountability between me and my fellow brother, who wants for his country and community what I want for my country and community— compassion, love and peace.” To experience AYP and Nairobi firsthand, interested people can also sign up for a Seva Safari—a service trip that incorporates daily yoga practice and builds sustainable community programs in Kenya. Spots are still available for Seva Safaris in November 2016 and throughout 2017. A direct donation can also be made at AfricaYogaProject.org.

Wary of Whiter Teeth? Considering Safety and Sensitivity by Hyo Lim

P

eople visiting the dentist frequently want to know, “How can I get my teeth whiter?” Driven by the entertainment industry’s obsession for beauty and youth, Americans are striving for whiter, brighter smiles. There are a variety of options for achieving whiter teeth. Let’s start by answering these questions: What actually is bleaching? Is bleaching safe? What products are effective, and what products and methods are more natural? Tooth bleaching is a process that oxidizes or breaks apart staining compounds that have discolored or darkened teeth. Teeth are composed of a hard but porous outer layer called enamel and a softer, porous inner layer called dentin. The dentin encases the pulp, the innermost component of the teeth that contains the nerves and blood vessels. Extensions of the nerves infiltrate the dentin and make this portion of the tooth alive. Enamel, unlike dentin, has no innervation. Compounds from food, drinks and smoking enter the enamel over time and eventually reach the dentin. It is this process that slowly discolors teeth. The bleaching agent or chemical used in whitening is usually hydrogen peroxide or its derivative. Lower concentration hydrogen peroxide is incorporated into over-the-counter products like Crest White Strips. The over-thecounter products, although much cheaper, produce unpredictable results because the concentration of the bleach

is low. Also, people would be wise to have an exam and consult with their dentist before using over-the-counter kits—if there is an undetected cavity or if bleach gets into the the nerves of the tooth through a crack or a filling, there can be pain and complications that will require more extensive dental work to repair the damage. There are two separate bleaching processes performed by dentists: takehome and in-office. In both processes, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide used is much higher than that found over the counter. Take-home bleaching trays are fabricated from molds taken of the patient’s teeth. The patient places

Change Your Career, Change Lives

bleaching agent in the trays and either wears them for a short time or sleeps in them, depending on the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide. Take-home trays combine the effectiveness of the in-office bleaching with the flexibility of controlling the bleaching process. The other process is an in-office application of a strong bleaching agent, coupled with a high-intensity light to accelerate the whitening. With higher strength comes a greater risk of sensitivity and discomfort. Improper use or technique can inflame the nerve and irritate the gums. Sharp pains or “zinging”, as well as sensitivity to temperature and spontaneous toothache, are not uncommon. However, concerns of possible oral cancer risk have not been supported. If bleaching is done in moderation and under the supervision of a dentist, it is a safe process. For those that prefer a natural route, a method for preventing staining is to brush after ingesting food or drink that can discolor, like coffee, wine and tea. Making more frequent visits to the hygienist can help, as can using a simple, safe, at-home toothpaste made by combining baking soda and over-the counter hydrogen peroxide antiseptic.
