energy healing and energy psychology (EP). Within the umbrella of “energy work” there exists a wide range of treatment options, from the ancient to the innovative, all with the purpose of balancing the body’s energetic flow, and achieving an optimal state of physical, emotional and spiritual health. Well-known body-centered practices like yoga, massage, reiki, acupuncture, reflexology and osteopathic manipulation; EP techniques including Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or “tapping”; Eric Pearl’s reconnective therapy; and Donna Eden’s energy medicine curriculum are only a sampling of the modalities that make up this growing body of practices.

We’re also celebrating the sea change in popular culture, as energy healing as a whole becomes more widely recognized by the mainstream. The National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health’s 2012 survey reports that approximately 38 percent of U.S. adults and approximately 12 percent of children used some form of complementary health treatment, and that they collectively spent $30 billion in out-of-pocket costs on those services. Nearly 30 percent of that spending was for practices classified as energy medicine. The office’s 2016 strategic plan allocates considerable federal money to continued clinical trials to identify the safety and usefulness of these practices in disease prevention and treatment. Surely, this is a sign of a turning tide.

Examples of this shift abound in healthcare, educational and correctional settings. Yoga, after proving its efficacy as a form of physical fitness and stress relief, is currently being mined for its usefulness in managing more subtle, energetic aspects of mind and emotional regulation in schools, rehabilitation and prison settings.

Major medical centers are now offering a range of complementary and mindbody approaches, such as acupuncture, tai chi and massage, in combination with conventional, allopathic medical treatment, and they are measuring their results in respected, peer-reviewed journals. Nurses are training in reiki and Healing Touch and are offering those services to patients in oncology, surgical and palliative settings. According to the American Hospital Association, in 2007, over 800 American hospitals offered reiki as part of their hospital services.

Whereas EP evidence was mostly anecdotal ten years ago, The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP) now cites over 80 research studies, including multiple randomized controlled trials published in professional and refereed journals, that confirm the treatment value of energy psychology when applied to many different problems, such as post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, stress management and performance enhancement. In 2012, ACEP became the first organization to be approved by the APA to give psychologists continuing education for energy psychology.

The research investigating the benefits of these modalities continues to increase as the interest from the public demands it.

It’s exciting to think about how these developments could impact the way we approach physical and mental health in our near and distant futures. Imagine teachers that can help children with ADHD into yoga poses, nurses trained to use hands-on healing after chemotherapy sessions, test proctors teaching EFT to a room of nervous students, and law enforcement officers skilled at guided mindful meditation, bringing presence and peace to the carceral environment.

uzanne Walski, doctor of veterinary medicine and owner of Meadowbrook Animal Healing, and Lyn Hicks, who cocreated The Room at Meadowbrook with Walski, will host a Vibrant Living Festival for people and their companion pets at The Room at Meadowbrook, in Ottsville, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on October 8, to celebrate the many ways healthy living can be experienced by people and their furry friends. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are invited to attend with their human companions.

The gathering will bring together many different healing and expressive art practitioners in one space. Classes and workshops will be offered free throughout the day, and healing services will be available for a fee. Offerings include yoga, qigong, women’s health, reflexology and aurasoma with jin shin jyutsu. Animal lectures and demonstrations will include chiropractic, acupuncture, Bach Flower Remedy and nutrition. Healthy snacks, made by a local nutritionist, will be available for purchase. The event will culminate in a sound healing experience. “This is an event where people can learn to take better care of their own health, and also learn how many of the same healing practices can be applied to their pets,” states Walski.

Walski has been serving the Pennsylvania community since 1987. She worked at several animal hospitals before opening Meadowbrook Animal Hospital. In 2000, she added chiropractic care, and in 2005, she became a practitioner of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine acupuncture. As her services evolved, so did the hospital, becoming Meadowbrook Animal Healing. Walski provides holistic healing for pets, including animal reiki, acupuncture, chiropractic, laser therapy, Bach Flower Remedy and individualized nutrition consultations.

Energy, Presence and Three Decades of Nursing Kathy Fennelly’s Healing Touch Therapy Brings It All to the Table

athy Fennelly has worked in medical settings her entire professional life. As a registered nurse for 30 years, she has worked in emergency rooms, cancer wards, surgical units, neurological and cardiac intensive care units, home health care and rehabilitation centers. In each setting, Fennelly’s motivation was the same: the profoundly intimate experience of supporting patients through their healing journey. After a second career in pharmaceuticals, Fennelly ultimately decided to return to patient care. This time, she extended her professional skillset to include the practice known as Healing Touch.

Healing Touch is a non-invasive energy healing technique that was founded and developed in 1989 by Janet Mentgen, a nurse who observed the positive effect of energetic touch with her patients. I

n classical yoga, teachers often sequence instruction toward reaching a pinnacle pose such as an inversion or arm balance. In restorative yoga, the peak pose is savasana—in which the practitioner fully relaxes while resting flat on their back. Leeann Carey, author of Restorative Yoga Therapy: The Yapana Way to Self-Care and Well-Being, explains, “This passive asana practice turns down the branch of the nervous system that keeps us in fight-or-flight mode and turns up the system allowing us to rest and digest. It feels like a massage for the nervous system and encourages self-inquiry, reflection and change, rather than perfection.”

The physical, mental and spiritual benefits are similar to those of active yoga, but because poses are held longer and supported by props such as bolsters, blankets, belts and blocks, “There’s no stress on the tissue and joints. Each pose gifts us with longerlasting benefits, including more time for the mind to unwind,” advises Carey.

“Restorative yoga allows both muscles and the brain to recover from fatigue, so we are stronger, sharper and better able to act in the world afterward,” explains Roger Cole, Ph.D., a certified Iyengar yoga teacher in Del Mar, California, and a research scientist studying NABuxMont.com

the physiology of relaxation, sleep and biological rhythms. He attests that it also serves as preparation for pranayama (mindful yoga breathing) and meditation, which require a clear, well-rested, focused mind.

Perfect for beginners and used by longtime practitioners to complement other yoga styles, restorative poses are designed to accurately realign and reshape the body. They also can be therapeutically tailored to support natural healing for issues related to tension, premenstrual syndrome, weak immune functioning, back pain, pregnancy and recovery for athletes. “Poses for healing may require targeted gentle stretching, but prop use will coax the body into desired positions without requiring muscular effort,” says Cole.

An early student of B.K.S. Iyengar and familiar with props, San Francisco resident and co-founder of Yoga Journal magazine Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., found herself leading her first class comprised entirely of supported poses during a power blackout at a 1980 workshop. “I didn’t want people walking around in the dark, so I improvised a restorative class and everyone loved it,” she recalls. She revisited the idea several years later when she personally

felt the need for physical, emotional and spiritual restoration.

For a year, 90 percent of her practice was supported poses, and the switch helped her so much that it inspired her first book, Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times. She’s since written more books and trained teachers in restorative yoga around the world.

As in classical yoga, a restorative sequence should be balanced with asanas (positions) from all pose classifications—backbends, twists, inversions and forward bends. It takes time for the body to comfortably settle deeply into a pose—as long as 15 minutes— therefore, a 90-minute restorative class may include only a handful of asanas.

Lasater says, “Most people don’t need more of anything from the culture in which we live. They need much more to learn to be still and at ease.”

In today’s yoga world, which seems to emphasize power and action, “Restorative yoga has become imperative to balance activity and ambition with stillness and being,” she continues. Lasater notes that while many classes are reducing savasana to as little as three minutes, students need 20 minutes.

Carey clarifies that because this approach focuses on opening and letting go, rather than striving for the biggest stretch, “Sensation-seeking yogis may need to shift their perspective. The biggest challenge is often quieting the mind while the body is still. When a student is uncomfortable because the mind is screaming, it helps to compare it to having tight hamstrings in an active class. We’re not chasing relaxation; just breathe, feel and watch,” she says.

“Eventually, everything will let go.”

“The more our mind rebels against relaxing, the more we need it,” observes Lasater. Students often turn to yoga as a strategy for feeling whole, and she suggests that one of the best ways to find clarity within is to listen in stillness, one savasana at a time. “It’s a gift to ourself, our family and the world,” she adds. “When we feel rested, we’re more compassionate and ready to serve the greater good.”

Transformation Yoga Project and Local Yoga Studios Introduce Trauma-Informed Yoga

O

n any given day there are hundreds of yoga classes taking place in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. However, only one is being offered inside the area’s largest maximum-security prison, State Correctional Institution Graterford (SCI Graterford), the 87-yearold correctional facility in Collegeville that is home to 3,500 incarcerated men.

“Breathe. Just breathe. Feel the chest rising and falling.” The voice of Mike Huggins, founder of the Transformation Yoga Project (TYP), reverberates from the cinder block walls of the prison gym. Fifteen men sit quietly on their mats, listening to the instruction of the mindfulness practice. The class is new for everyone, offered in response to an acknowledgment by policy makers and prison officials of the high rates of psychological problems experienced by individuals within the prison system, and the studies showing the relationship between yoga and reduced anxiety and depression, enhanced cognitive function and self-control. While yoga in prison may seem like a strange concept, it provides tools to help these men find comfort in a very uncomfortable environment.

It was this distress that led Huggins to start practicing yoga in his cell during his first few months in prison in 2011. While other guys were lifting weights and playing cards, Huggins was moving through the postures and breathing exercises he learned at Power Yoga Works when he was a high-powered corporate executive.

After receiving a sentence for a whitecollar misdemeanor, he found that the practice that had helped with lowering his stress and keeping him fit “outside” was helping to keep his body healthy and his mind calm and centered while he was on the “inside”.

Huggins’ yoga poses quickly captured the attention of the guys on the block, and in a short time Huggins was teaching yoga—multiple classes a day— to an ever-growing number of participants. “Yoga was a source of strength, happiness and inner calmness in an environment filled with pain, sadness, hatred and despair,” Huggins says. “The power is real, it’s tangible and it’s within each of us. For instance, after guiding a yoga session, two inmates were in tears for the first time in their lives as they tried to deal with their inner demons.

can be vulnerable as they work on their stuff in a non-judgmental way.”

Huggins founded the Transformation Yoga Project in 2012 and, four years later, it has grown into a dedicated team serving people impacted by trauma, addiction and incarceration. Their classes are “trauma-sensitive”, in that they are explicitly designed to be effective for releasing deeply held, unresolved and painful experiences. People that regularly participate in the classes become aware of their mental patterns and habits and how those patterns relate to behaviors; they learn how yoga can be a tool for restoring the connection between mind, heart and body. The point of the practice is to develop the whole person and increase sensitivity and compassion toward oneself and others.

Huggins is right on time with this kind of work: with incarceration rates at all-time highs, and a spike in heroin and prescription medication abuse, the number of individuals and families impacted by addiction and criminalization is unprecedented. “Ninety percent of the people in prison are going to be released. They’re going to be neighbors in our communities. What happens after they serve their time?” questions Huggins. “This is similar for people in recovery. After rehab or other programs

they’re coming back into the community, and many are at a loss as to where to go next. An ongoing yoga practice that they can use to provide physical and emotional well-being can be a critical part of their success as they take those next steps to rebuilding their lives.”

TYP’s work is growing. In 2015 alone, the organization served more than 1,300 participants in its recovery program and 2,000 in the prison program, as well as over 500 through veterans’ classes at nearly a dozen different facilities in the greater Philadelphia area.

Huggins explains, “Our objective is to provide those in physical and mental prisons access to practical and integrative mindfulness tools they can draw upon even when they are not in a class setting. Whether dealing with confrontation in the prison yard or working on recovery from addictions, yoga provides the opportunity to practice mindfulness and find practical solutions to difficult situations. Transformation Yoga Project facilitates this practical application of yoga as a lifestyle, on and beyond the mat.”

TYP believes strongly that the opportunity to practice yoga should be available outside of the institutions TYP serves; people need to continue their yoga practice during re-entry, the transitional experience that people go through when they are establishing new lives. To meet this need, TYP has developed a unique studio partnership program, working collaboratively with local yoga studios to provide classes specifically designed for those who are in the process of rebuilding.

TYP is actively seeking more partner studios in the Bucks, Montgomery and surrounding areas to support their growing programs. “We have facilities calling us every day that want us to start classes. But right now, we don’t have the resources,” says Lynn Rosenstock, TYP’s director of development and a longtime advocate of creating positive change in the criminal justice system.

Partner studios make a difference and allow TYP to expand by setting up collection boxes at check-in desks, making monthly or annual donations, hosting or sponsoring donation-based trauma-sensitive classes and/or collecting supplies.

“We love receiving mats and blocks,” Rosenstock shares. “When we can get these kinds of supplies covered by donations from the yoga community, TYP can direct more money toward the costs related to instruction—meaning we can teach more classes to more people who need them.”

Partner studios can also extend scholarships to TYP participants that would like to complete their Yoga Teaching Training (YTT). “Some of our best teachers are former TYP participants in recovery. They totally understand,” says Huggins. TYP just completed its first 200-hour certified YTT program at SCI Graterford (a maximum-security prison), so the men can teach within the prison or in the community upon release. Inmate-led yoga programs are being developed for both hospice and cancer patients. “They have that experience that can reach out and connect to others on another level,” says Huggins.

TYP is truly grateful for those who participate and support their mission.

They use social media to promote and support partner studios’ Transformation Yoga classes and events, as well as to acknowledge donations. Studios are also invited to participate in the Gratitude Festival, scheduled for spring 2017.

Natural Remedies Help Kids Heal

T

he household is settling for the night when the 5-yearold cries out, “My throat hurts!”

“There’s no need to panic,” says Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, in Pecos, New Mexico, an integrative physician and chief medical officer of Weil Lifestyle. “It’s pretty easy to figure out if it’s strep throat, which requires antibiotics, or something you can treat at home.”

Only 10 to 20 percent of sore throats in children are caused by Streptococcus bacteria which, if not properly treated, can lead to heart damage. The first question to ask is, “What are the symptoms?” If these include sudden onset of a severe and worsening sore throat without any complaints of scratchiness; a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or more; headache or stomach pain; and the lack of a stuffy nose, cough or sign of a cold—a trip to the pediatrician is essential and a course of antibiotics is necessary, says Low Dog. The vast majority of youngsters’ sore throats, which may accompany a common cold, are caused by viruses and will heal on their own in about a week. Many natural remedies will help children feel better and relieve the pain; some cost so little they are nearly free.

Salt water gargle: “A glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of sea salt swirled into it is an old-school remedy that works well for kids at least 5 years old,” says Erika Krumbeck, a naturopathic doctor and licensed primary care physician practicing pediatrics in Missoula, Montana. She notes that a salt water gargle can also moderate the symptoms of strep until the child can see a doctor.

The Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies confirms that the salt water draws excess fluid from inflamed throat tissues.

It also loosens mucus and removes other irritants, including bacteria, allergens and fungi. Just make sure children don’t swallow the salt water, counsels Krumbeck.

Warm compresses: A warm water compress using a wet hand towel applied for 10 or 15 minutes every hour loosens mucus and is soothing. “It’s amazing how effective these familiar practices are,” says Krumbeck. “Grandma knew what she was doing.”

Lemon juice and honey: “Honey is sweet, so kids love it,” says certified nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, of New York and Los Angeles. This traditional recipe works because the honey has antibacterial properties and the lemon juice is packed with immune-boosting antioxidants.

Snyder cautions that babies younger than 12 months old should never be given honey because their immune systems cannot handle the bacterial spores sometimes present in the sweet treat.

Elderberry: The tiny purple berries of the Sambucus nigra L. plant shortens the duration of colds and flu often suffered by air travelers, according to research that includes a large Australian study. Elderberry syrup appeals to kids because it tastes delicious. Low Dog recommends keeping a bottle on hand at all times because it’s hard to know when a child will complain of a scratchy throat. “This yummy syrup is good for all ages. It’s so safe. I love it,” says Low Dog, adding, “Plus, you can always use it on whole-grain pancakes.”

Sage and Echinacea: Drinking sage tea and gargling with echinacea are old-time remedies for sore throats that now have scientific backing, says Snyder. Go for a twofer and add a little echinacea to the tea, she suggests.

A Swiss study showed that an echinacea/sage spray soothed sore throat symptoms just as well as a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray, which can have side effects that include more swelling and even allergic reactions; the suggested spray should not be used with children under 12.

Pairing up a dose of safe and gentle, time-tested sore throat recipes with a big hug will go far toward relieving most little ones’ suffering.

UNSAFE DRUGS Acetaminophen, a popular ingredient in over-the-counter children’s cold medicines like Tylenol, has been linked to twice the risk of developing asthma. Immediate side effects can include rapid heart rate and convulsions.

Ephedrine, pseudophedrine and phenylephrine are popular ingredients in children’s cold medications even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says they’re not effective. Side effects include the possibility of unsupervised children overdosing on the sugary concoctions and can even prove fatal. In 2008, the FDA warned parents not to use any such cold medications for children under 4.

Antibiotics are not effective against the viruses that cause most colds and flu. Antibiotics kill bacteria like those associated with strep throat, not viruses. Using antibiotics for a cold can actually lead to future antibiotic resistance.

Acupuncture, Actually A Practical Look at Qi and ‘Energy’

powerful method of stimulating the immune system and cytokines (chemical messengers). Plus, with acupuncture needles you can physically loosen tight muscle and connective tissue to release restrictions and improve blood flow.

I think one of the challenges in studying acupuncture scientifically is that its methods do so much, all at once. One exact mechanism eludes us. That’s why, even though I have a very scientifically oriented mind, I still prefer the traditional Chinese and Japanese pre-scientific theoretical concepts. We still haven’t discovered a better way to describe the complex processes happening here.

P: What makes acupuncture unique compared to other modalities that work with the subtle energy of the body?

G: Acupuncture is old, people! Over

Paolo: What is qi?

Grace: Many people think of qi as

“energy”, but I think that’s too materialistic of a translation. Qi is basically a very useful term that sums up complex processes that together create recognizable phenomena in the body. If you try to think of qi as some kind of literal substance or force you’re just going to frustrate people interested in scientific backing; you won’t find a measurable “energy” that corresponds to what people who practice Asian medicine are talking about.

“Qi” for acupuncturists is “weather” as it relates to the body. Weather is electromagnetic and gravitational relationships between elements and molecules; it’s pressure dynamics, thermodynamics, radiation; it’s many processes, all overlapping and influencing each other. We can study it, characterize it and make predictions about it. The same way that we recognize many patterns in weather, we learn how to recognize patterns in 30

qi, so we can influence bodily functions and promote health.

P: What do acupuncture methods actually do?

G: The traditional answer is that they

stimulate special points that harmonize qi in the body, thereby promoting proper function and health. Scientifically, stimulating acupuncture points with needles and moxa has been shown to generate complex responses.

Needling causes distortions in chains of connective tissue throughout the body, which link different muscle groups, joints and organs. It also fires nerve endings that light up vastly different areas of the brain and spinal cord. Acupuncture causes an electrical distortion in the body’s electromagnetic field—you’re putting a metal needle into an ionic solution (the body), which immediately creates an electrical polarity. 2,500 years old! Moxibustion, the practice of heating acupoints with the ember of dried mugwort, is even older.

So even though acupuncture is dealing with complexities that resist the scientific method, it has withstood a very important test with its continued use over such a long period of time.

A good scientist remains openminded to the things that science doesn’t yet have the tools to measure and explain. That applies to a lot of what happens in healing. But that doesn’t mean you have to be openminded to everything. Innovation is good. It helps our medicine get better and better, but with a methodology that is mainly observational, you have to be careful not to be led astray.

For this reason, I approach change cautiously, and I gravitate toward Japanese acupuncture, which monitors feedback during the session. We’re always checking diagnostic qualities in the pulse, the abdomen or a symptomatic area for signs that our treatments are having the desired effect. Vetting my methods this way gives me confidence.

P: What are you feeling for before, during and after needling?

G: Patients like to ask me if I can

“feel the energy,” and if you think of it like qi, the summation of complex

processes, then the answer is absolutely yes. We rely on touch, smell, sight and sound to collect information about the patient—especially touch in Japanese acupuncture. If I have to wear a BandAid on just one finger, I feel like I have a hand tied behind my back—it affects what I can feel.

Before needling, I’m feeling diagnostically for areas of restriction, imbalance and dysfunction in the patient.

This might be structural, as in certain muscle groups or vertebral bodies that are too tight, twisted or compressed.

Often internal imbalances will also be represented by certain qualities in the pulse, on the tongue or in reflective zones of the abdomen and back. For example, cardiac problems often show up with specific tender points on the upper torso and back.

Next I’m feeling for an appropriate point location; there are traditional anatomical locations as well as certain qualities that identify a “live” point.

Depending on the point, it might be a recessed area, a tight spot, a tender spot, thicker skin or connective tissue— qualities that indicate a more effective point. When I insert the needle, there is a feeling I seek that acupuncturists call the “arrival of qi”. To me it’s like a density on the end of the needle, like it’s connected well. Learning to recognize it is part of our craft.

After needling I will re-check the diagnostic signs to see if the acupunc-

ture was successful at balancing the qi.

If I did a good job there should be signs of improvement; if not, I might need another point, or a different one, or to add moxa, for example.

I’m also feeling the qi of the person as a whole. This is the intuitive part, synthesizing the input from all of my senses.

P: How do you cultivate the necessary skills?

G: I started studying acupuncture at

the same time I started studying Aikido and Zen meditation. Like acupuncture, Aikido trains the various senses of the body to harmonize with another person’s qi. These practices help me to be more centered and attuned to my patients, and to myself.

An invaluable part of my training is a regular apprenticeship with the acupuncture master Kiiko Matsumoto.

I spend at least two or three weeks a year shadowing her here and in Japan, taking in practical knowledge as well as the qi of her practice—the complex

combination of qualities that allow her to be a dynamic, effective practitioner.

Taking my own health seriously is also a critical way that I stay attuned to the balance of qi in others.

I believe in it, I live it! I work on my posture throughout the day and study how to move in a way that’s healthy and efficient. I try to eat in a way that’s balanced ecologically, that doesn’t do me harm and that fills me with vitality. I get outdoors and experience the natural world to help keep those areas of my consciousness and humanity alive. I meditate, do yoga and exercise a lot, and I try to play and have fun. Last but not least, I get regular acupuncture!

Cranial Osteopathy

A Medical Approach to Craniosacral Manipulation

any people seeking alternatives to modern prescriptions have discovered the benefits of craniosacral therapy (CST). However, what many people don’t know is that CST is an adaptation of osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine (OCMM).

OCMM was first revealed to the osteopathic medical community in the 1930s by William Garner Sutherland, DO. He founded his discovery upon the theory that the central nervous system has its own inherent motion, which drives the movement of the fluid around the brain and spinal cord as well as around the expansion and contraction of the skull. When this system moves freely, our nervous system is able to adapt to our environment and our daily

life. However, when there is restriction in this motion, we are met with varying degrees of discomfort: pain in our muscles, chronic ear infections and colic in children, headaches and TMJ, to name a few.

Osteopathic physicians have been trained and tested in diagnosis and treatment of all medical conditions, with an emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. During osteopathic medical school, physicians are required to complete 400 hours of specialty training in osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Those physicians choosing to continue with specialty training in OCMM begin with a 40-hour introductory course in which they learn to diagnose and treat the head (cranium) and tailbone

Chinese Massage to Restore Chi

hen people hear the word “massage”, they often think of what most people associate with Swedish, deep muscle or other specialties that focus on the muscles. Although those forms of massage offer a number of benefits stemming from relaxation and release of muscle tension, shin tai shiatsu is unique in that it incorporates a wide range of techniques and skills from Chinese Medicine that work together to restore the life force, or chi, to the body.

Shin tai shiatsu practitioners receive years of training and are required to maintain continuing education within the field to enhance their specialty and continue to evolve their skill set. Similar to acupuncture, shin tai shiatsu incorporates the benefits of meridian opening with use of acupressure, with and without joint rotation. Meridian opening assists in the flow of life within the body. The practice involves central channel (along the spine) opening, as well as stretches, pulls and rotations. Structural (aligning the spine) work can assist in healing trauma, arthritis, degeneration and overuse.

Additionally, shin tai brings the value of myofascial release to the client, providing enhanced fascial relaxation, reduced compression and soft tissue health. Incorporating cranial-sacral work with shin tai enhances the experience and can help with chronic headaches, migraines and memory issues, as well as lower back pain, balance issues and dizziness.

Shin tai shiatsu is performed fully clothed on a gravityreducing cushion, providing the client optimal comfort.

A shin tai practitioner is well trained to identify areas of focus—both the good and the problematic areas—to open space within both to restore balance. As a result, each session can be uniquely different. Shin tai practitioners are trained to identify trauma and emotional blockages within the body and bring healing to a level beyond just the body, encompassing emotional and spiritual health. Bringing back the life force allows the client to have full access to their unique source within.

lmost 60 percent of America’s pet cats are overweight, according to a survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Feline obesity can lead to joint pain, hinder self-grooming and make it harder to use the litter box, all resulting in fat cats being left at shelters by frustrated owners.

Chubby kitties also are more prone to osteoarthritis, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems and non-allergic skin conditions. “Potential health problems make overweight cats harder to adopt,” says Deanna Schmidt, with the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in Pittsburgh.

“The first time I saw healthy cats, I thought they looked small because I’d become used to seeing fat cats,” recalls Traci Pichette, founder of Pumeli tea and gift boxes, in St. Petersburg, Florida.

She’s not alone in her assessment.

While free-feeding dry food is easier for owners and allows a cat to snack at will, some take advantage and overeat, often from boredom. To help the transition from always-available dry food to mealtime wet food, use kibble as a special treat.

Food puzzles, widely available online or in pet supply stores, will keep Kitty busy during the day. Homemade feeding puzzles work, too; put a small amount of kibble in a cardboard tube or small box, tape the end shut and randomly cut small holes in the sides.

Kitty will have to roll the tube or fit a paw inside to retrieve a treat.

“Free-feeding dry food is comparable to a constant supply of Fritos on our desk,” says Jackson Galaxy, author of Cat Daddy. “As far as the myth that dry food cleans teeth, I ask, do you floss with Melba toast? Dry food leaves plaque. A grain-free, wet food adds needed mois-

ture and fat to their diet. A cat’s teeth are designed to rip and tear, not crunch.”

“Changing my cat’s food to an all-wet diet slimmed her down to a healthy weight. I hated the smell, but it made sense to me that dry food was just carbs,” says Pichette. “At first, she whined at not having food all the time, but got used to it, and now she can eat treats in moderation. The cool thing is we’re all enjoying her increased energy and playfulness.”

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their natural diet comprises 90 percent meat and 10 percent vegetable matter. A roaming cat’s native routine is to search for food, hunt, catch and eat, groom and nap. Because each catch is small, they eat frequently.

“There’s still an ancestor cat inside domesticated felines, a ‘raw’ cat that wants to hunt for its food,” explains Galaxy. “We need to play into that thinking and feed at intervals; ideally, every five hours or so, or at least in the morning, after work and about an hourand-a-half before bedtime.”

While the family’s morning and evening schedules mean just a quick scoop of food in the bowl, the third meal should be an interactive one. “A battery-operated toy or waving a laser light around is not play,” says Galaxy.

“Interactive play is not texting with one hand and wiggling the fishing pole toy with the other. You have to get up and move to let the cat search for the toy, watch and wait, then pounce. It engages the animal mentally and physically and brings the raw cat to the surface. When you reach the point of diminishing returns, the pet is tired and it’s time for a meal.” His foundation improves lives of shelter animals, teaching staff to clicker train, entertain and exercise their cats to make them more adoptable.

After an active day, the cat will be ready for bed, syncing its rhythm with the rest of the household. “A full play session satisfies natural instincts and prevents the cat from hunting your ankles as you sleep,” advises Galaxy.

“It’s not a luxury to have a variety of toys; it’s a necessity for having a quality relationship with a healthy cat.”

ith the many energy healing and energy psychology modalities available today, practitioners and consumers might not always know where to turn for sound information about training, research and professional standards in the field. Fortunately, there’s a locallybased organization addressing this international concern.

Formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1999, the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP), headquartered in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, has a global membership of more than 1,200 licensed mental health professionals and allied health practitioners. ACEP members adhere to a code of ethics and are dedicated to exploring, developing, researching and applying energy psychology and energy healing methods to alleviate human suffering, enhance human performance and access human potential.

ACEP has been a staunch advocate for ethical and professional standards in this emerging field of energy-based health care over the past 17 years. The organization led the charge in overturning institutional bans against providing continuing education for psychologists and other professionals studying these modalities. As the body of research on energy psychology and energy healing has grown in rigor and volume, the possibilities for creating truly integrative care have increased as well.

Between its international conference, national trainings, institutional advocacy, humanitarian outreach, online courses and free research pages, ACEP offers a wealth of information and support for both practitioners and consumers interested in bringing energy healing into the mainstream.

The amount of science and research that supports subtle energy methods is growing. There have been 82 published studies on the effectiveness of Meridian Tapping Techniques, including Emotional Freedom Techniques, a method derived from acupressure that involves tapping with fingertips on the body’s meridian points to release energy blockages.

ACEP has detailed much of the science behind energy healing in a new online program that features the field’s leading researchers, such as Bruce Lipton, Jim Oschman, Beverly Rubik, Dan Siegel, Dean Radin and many others. The course covers energy psychology, energy medicine and energy healing and offers continuing education to mental health professionals, physicians, nurses and body workers. While this course is geared toward practitioners, it’s also appropriate for people that want to be educated about the science behind these energy healing methods.
