Studio 3B “A Sydney Harbour Drama House”

1. A Floating Drama House Tutor: Tara Sydney Sem II 23’

Snail’s Bay// Sydney, Australia Living artifacts are stagnant in the middle of Snails Bay, forgotten in time. Barges - some for construction, some for hosting conventions - slowly melt into rust under the salty sea air. Commencing in 2013, the addition of each new barge collated a new physical narrative, one of urban change and ignored needs. By repurposing five existing site barges, the Floating Drama House supports a theatrical narrative that emphasizes the alternative performance space. This project focalises and reinvents this narrative, using the unwanted permanence of neglected infrastructure as a foundation for regeneration.

A Floating Drama House After gathering in Yurulbin Park, the audience is ushered through the slipway by boat. This initial journey leads to the dock of a barge, re-purposed to house an amphitheater.

The Floating Drama House harnesses the mobility of the barges by attatching tugboats to them. From thier vantage point in the ‘auditorium’, the audience is physically moved to view different performances. Secondary barges become stages, housing the three ‘acts’ of a play - the introduction, tension, and climax. Thus, a dramatic narrative forms from a system of modular floating barges.

CBD// Sydney, Australia The outbreak of World War II led to a 5 to 1 ratio of soldiers dying from disease and infection. The fear of pandemic forced Allied immunology to coordinate and deploy vaccines, resulting in the eradication of many diseases. The public outbreak of COVID-19 has pushed vaccine development to new limits. lead not by governments but by independent corporations - raising concerns about accessibility and pricing. Intermingled in the folds of this vaccination clinic, is a memorial to this history of vaccination. forcing the public to consider political and economic motivations behind their health and safety. What are the consequences for you?

3. Nungalinya Teachers’ College Tutor: Richard Briggs Sem II 22’

Casuarina// Darwin, Australia Nungalinya Teacher’s College is composed in a foreground of Country, that encompasses the interrelationships between all creatures, including Earth, sky, water, humans, animals, plants and ancestral spirits. The propagation of culturally significant spaces across Nungalinya seek to recover previous understandings of country through a lens of education and religious empowerment. Thus, the project unfolds multiple culturally safe spaces for the Indigenous Australians of Nungalinya teacher’s college to reconnect with community as they seek practical and spiritual growth/healing.

Construction and Materiality Construction and materiality is guided by sustainable and quick building practices that facilitate efficient thermal comfort with the restrictions of no A/C. The corrugated iron roofing reflects radiant heat, and allows for lightweight roofing for cyclonic storms, while keeping costs low. Much of the other material is timber and Leichhardt pine from the nearby fast-growing trees. It allows the building low thermal mass, resistance against cyclonic winds, and dries quickly which assists flooding recover. These are designed to be prefabricated, but the abundance of material on site can allow residents to maintain/repair the building themselves, which could strengthen a communal relationship. This, alongside choices in form such as the doublehieght roofing, elevated base and louvered windows allow for efficient homes that function alongside the environment.
