“Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men. To put into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and the social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word: order.”

The current housing crisis in the US challenges architecture to address a critical need while presenting the opportunity to propose new solutions. This project explores innovative possibilities for multi-family living. The goal is to propose new housing models that sustain healthy, diverse communities. Defining the qualities and needs of a healthy and diverse community is the core of the design.

The FloatingVolumes

This project centers on proposals for a municipal gymnasium and health facility on a corner plot in the Fairline-Popular district of downtown Atlanta. The primary tools of explorations were physical models, sections, ad abstract diagramatic sketches; Paying careful attention to craft and to the hand’s relationship to the thought.

Floating Volumes

“Society of Rooms.” This phrase comes from a speech Louis Khan gave in the 70s, accusing the dominant paradigm of modernist universal space. optimized by the free plan, of detaching architecture from human experience and social life. In De re aedificatoria, Alberti stated that “a building is a form of body operating at the scale of a room for an individual, at the scale of a building for a family, and at the scale of a city for a community.” Khan developed Alberti’s line of thought, both formal and social when he described the street as “the room of agreement.”

The Urban Trail

Exploring a corner in the middle of all the chaos in a futuristic utopian city, this project aims to provide a space for the community to exercise, walk their dogs, etc. on an elevated ramp system, while giving the kids an open space on the ground plane to play around. The goal of this project is to design a calm space for the people living in this urban setting and the people who are just passing through.

The Sine Pavilion

The Sine Pavilion provides a space for gathering, a space to be safe from the rain and the sun. Thepavilion was computationally designed using a sinus relationship and Gausian normal distributions. The main goal of the assignment is to explore computational design possibilities in form finding.

The Sine Pavilion

Using a grasshopper script, the pavilion is designed by cladding modules resting on a structural frame. First a triangular grid was mapped onto the surface and then each panel was scaled using a point charge located in the center of the pavilion based on their unique distance to the point. After moving the scaled triangular panels slightly up, they were then lofted to the original panels to complete the cladding. At the end the structural frame for the pavilion was created using a hexagonal grid that was mapped onto the surface and then piped.

The Bus Stop

This design for a bus-stop on Georgia Tech’s campus features a butterfly roof with cut-outs in the center. These voids will guide the water collected from the rain through the glass columns into an underground water tank. Which then can be repurposed for various uses. Another feature of the busstop is the adjustable wooden seats so that the user can adjust the back as he or she wishes. The aim of the design was to collect water, provide comfort while being aesthetically pleasant.

The Frame & The Content

By designing the frame the designer is also designing the negative space. For this project, it was the frame that was designed and built with foam core and then the negative space was filled with plaster to achieve the final design.

The Geometry of The Environment

The 19th century architect, Viollet-e-Duc, once wrote: “symmetry - an unhappy idea for which, in our homes, we sacrifice our comfort, occasionally our common-sense and always a lot of money.

GC Prostho Museum

The design of this structure consisted of taking on the challenge of creating medium scale wood structure built by combining small sections of wooden members based on a traditional wooden toy from the Hida Takayama region in Japan. No glue was used to build the structure. The wood grid supports the structure, and also serves as a display space for the items exhibited in the museum.

Sanctum in Concrete

The Azuma House in Sumiyoshi, Japan is one of the first works of the self-thought architect Tadao Ando. He divided in three a space devoted to daily life, composed of an austere geometry, with the insertion of an abstract space dedicated ti the play of the wind and light. The objective of the design was ti challenge the inertia that has invaded our everyday lives.

Instructor James Park
53 Sanctum in Concrete

The characteristic of the design is the tripartite structure in which the middle portion connects the two living thirds of the building, creating a dumbell effect. This homes intent was to create a sense of calm and escape while maintaining the constant reminder of nature’s presence: the light.

The Folded Architecture

Architecture can be folded. For me, architecture is not just about building structures using standard techniques. In my opinion, it is about creativity and innovative construction techniques that result in a lasting design. In this section origami techniques were explored to achieve design prototypes.

The ThinkingHand

Computer-aided design is essential, especially in the world we live in today. However, an architect needs to be able to express his or her ideas through hand sketches. The name of this section is taken from Juhani Palasmaa’s book regarding this matter.
