THE OPPORTUNISTIC FORAGER Year 2 Studio Genius in Nature 2021


The Opportunistic Forager is a shelter where people seek refuge and always depend on opportunities of sun, rain and compost to forage for survival. This architecture is made up of spaces that lead everyone to the top where it is a space to “hunt” by the collection of rainwater harvesting and compost. These collections are to be used for farming of cabbage, lettuce and potatoes. Harvesting the crops will be required to drop into the netting tube which brings the harvested goods down to ƥĺĚ ƙƎîČĚ DžĺĚƑĚ ƎĚūƎŕĚ ƑĚČūŠŠĚČƥ îŠē ƙƭƙƥîĿŠ ƥĺĚĿƑ ĚŠĚƑijNjɍ ¹ĺĿƙ ƙƎîČĚ Ŀƙ ŕūČîƥĚē ċĚŠĚîƥĺ DžĺĚƑĚ Ŀƥ Ƿūîƥƙ îċūDŽĚ ƥĺĚ DžîƥĚƑ together with the sleeping pods that hold one person each.

Luring the people who are walking along the corridor to purchase the goods displayed by pushing. The habitus of my villager is a pushy saleswoman where she would push the people verbally by suggesting and pointing at the goods displayed in front of her which are also surrounding the people who are walking along the corridor. This is just one of her marketing strategies. The pushiness of the corridor is contributed by the shelves of goods and the counter slanting towards the people, forcing them to slant their body, catching their attention. The environment also plays a part whereby the vehicles nearby affect the movement of the people at the site. The form was created in such a way that it is a must to walk through the corridor instead of taking the shortest route to the other side. The strings are used as the ƑūūIJɈ Džîŕŕ îŠē ǷūūƑ DžĺĿČĺ ēĚƥĚƑŞĿŠĚ ƥĺĚ ŞūDŽĚŞĚŠƥ ūIJ ƥĺĚ ƎĚūƎŕĚ DžĺĚƑĚ ƥĺĚ ŠîƑƑūDžĚƑ ƥĺĚ ČūƑƑĿēūƑ ijĚƥƙɈ ƥĺĚ ŞūƑĚ ŕĿŠĚƙ ūIJ ƙƥƑĿŠijƙ Ŀƥ ĺîƙɍ ƙ the light channels on to the strings, shadows of lines create a sense of direction to the people, leading to the space that is very pushy.

Apart from the villager being able to push verbally with ease due to being closer to the customers, this space is intended to force the people to slant their body to get through. MOVEMENT OF THE CUSTOMERS

The corridor gets narrower as people tend to walk along the corridor due to the presence of incoming vehicle which signals the people to avoid the road.

When there are no vehicles, people tend to take the shortest route to cross to the other side and avoid the corridor. This causes the corridor to be wider.

“View across the sea, Ever-changing scaffoldings, Overlapping lines” is the haiku of my invisible city, Thekla. The concept of my cabin derives from the third stanza of the haiku where there are many uses of lines on the external envelope of the cabin which come in the form ūIJ DžĿŠēūDžƙ îŠē ŕūƭDŽƑĚƙɍ ¹ĺĚ îƑƑîŠijĚŞĚŠƥ ūIJ ċūƥĺ DžĿŠēūDžƙ îŠē ŕūƭDŽƑĚƙ îƑĚ ČîƑĚIJƭŕŕNj ƎŕîČĚē îƥ ƙƎĚČĿǶČ îƑĚîƙ DžĿƥĺ ƑĚIJĚƑĚŠČĚ ƥū ƥĺĚ ċƭĿŕēĿŠij orientation. There are four top-hung windows placed on two top sides of the cabin each, facing north and south. This is to allow good cross ventilation as the windows are facing the direction of northeast and southwest monsoon. This project aims to find and identify places/public architecture in Singapore with rich architectural ¹ĺĿƙ ƎƑūŏĚČƥ îĿŞƙ ƥū ǶŠē îŠē ĿēĚŠƥĿIJNj ƎŕîČĚƙɓƎƭċŕĿČ îƑČĺĿƥĚČƥƭƑĚ ĿŠ ¬ĿŠijîƎūƑĚ DžĿƥĺ ƑĿČĺ îƑČĺĿƥĚČƥƭƑîŕ value and to conduct site visit with newfound knowledge of architectonics and to appreciate the construction and detailing behind these places with architectural value.
