hi there! Hi! Thanks for stopping by - I’m Nadia, a third-year architecture student at the University of Waterloo. Raised in Hong Kong, a city surrounded by destinations with diverse architectural styles, I’ve had the privilege of fulfilling my utmost passion, traveling. My journeys have nurtured an appreciation for how architecture varies regionally, subject to the context of the locality. The built environment is shaped in response to the needs of occupants, and the physical conditions of the site. Yet, the challenge lies within finding an innovative, aesthetically pleasing design responding to both requirements. Observing the endless ways in which architects have responded in the past drives my passion for architecture and allows me to remain open-minded within the creative field. Experiencing architecture through traveling is a hobby that brings me immense joy; I strive to spread this happiness through my projects, while conveying narratives that inspire me. I hope you enjoy this portfolio of my recent works. I sincerely appreciate your time and hope to hear from you soon!

Recommendation for Nadia Cheng
June 2, 2020
To whom it may concern, Nadia Cheng worked at plusClover as a full-time employee from January to April in 2020. During her tenure at plusClover, Nadia worked on a series of projects: Modularity, a research project for Infrastructural modular units for outdoor urban spaces; Headland Road, a multi-unit residential project; and Artone Residence, a residential interior project in Hong Kong. Nadia joined our office during extraordinary times – within two weeks of starting at plusClover, our office shifted to working from home due to the coronavirus. As such, Nadia had to adapt quickly to a remote working situation even before she could familiarize herself with the office culture. Nonetheless, Nadia did extremely well during such trying circumstances, which speaks to her rare ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Nadia not only learns quickly, but also is extremely dependable and responsive. She has the rare ability to know when she needs to work independently, and also when to ask questions. She is consistent in setting a high standard with her work, and always manages her time well. I strongly believe that Nadia will be a valuable addition to any Architecture practice. I certainly would welcome her back at every opportunity. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Clover Lee Principal plusClover

subtle densities what_Multi-Generational Dwellings where_Toronto, Canada how_Rhino, Lumion, Adobe CC Multi-generational homes allow for large families to cohabit one dwelling; this mode of living offers opportunities for family members who would otherwise be living in separate locations to spend an increased amount of time together in the large amounts of living rooms and other communal spaces, thus strengthening familial relationships. This project focuses on subtle change: expanding the number of occupants that can live in each existing bungalow, rather than introducing a completely new building. These are homes for growth; not only do they accommodate growth in family sizes, but the architecture itself is also an extension and development of what already exists on-site to maintain a sense of familiarity. This concept is mirrored in the exterior facade, which consists of stained wood panels which match the colour of the existing bungalows. However, at the same time, it is able to offer a distinction between the existing and new structures. 3A Design Studio, Winter 2021. Supervised by Professor Adrian Blackwell. 9

converge what_Multi-Faith Community Center where_Cathedraltown, Markham, Canada how_Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe CC Water is a spiritual, cleansing element. At Converge, not only does water come together, so do people of all religions and backgrounds. This multi-faith community center is located in Cathedraltown, a residential community developed surrounding The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, a Slovak Greek Catholic Church. Converge celebrates the diversity of the local population, as Cathedraltown is now home to inhabitants of all backgrounds, despite its Catholic origins. The core of this building is the Multi-faith prayer and wellness room, featuring a simple design and spaces of varying brightness to accommodate all religious practices. Converge extends from the entryway to the Cathedral of transfiguration, to the area of land on the opposite side of the road. As a project that began with a focus on stormwater management, water is also used to emphasize the changing topography of the land. 2B Design Studio, Spring 2020. what_Pavillion where_Minamitsuru District, Japan how_Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe CC By the perimeter of Mount Fuji is a lush and dense forest that attracts its visitors for an unexpected reason. Also known as the “suicide forest”, Aokigahara is one of the most popular sites for suicide worldwide. Detour is a pavillion serving as a memorial, remembering the departed souls of the forest, while encouraging those seeking an end to their life to reconsider such actions. The curved pathway is intended to promote the idea that life will eventually improve and reverse into a better place for them, if occupants are willing to continue moving ahead and living. Placed beside the main path of the Aokigahara forest, the pavillion reminds occupants that it is normal to take detours in life. Ultimately, Detour has been designed with the hopes of leading occupants to a better place in their lives. It is a pavillion to pause and rest at, but also an opportunity to turn around to choose an alternate fate. 1B Building Construction, Winter 2019. In collaboration with Emily Chen. what_Thermal Bath where_Hveragerði, Iceland how_Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe CC Hjerta is a thermal bath located by the popular tourist destination, the Reykjadalur Hot Springs. It serves a two-fold purpose: recognizing the public aspect of modern bathing, while also emphasizing the individual’s awareness of their surroundings and themselves. As a ritualistic act, bathing is a core tradition of the human nature. We enter water with a heightened sense of ourselves and our surroundings. Here, we cleanse, heal, and engage with others, enjoying the modern bath as a luxury for all. Nested in the scenic hills of Hveragerði, this thermal bath offers an architectural response to the existing hot spring thermal river. Providing a public pool and sauna, commercial amenities, and entry decks, this intervention invites visitors to relax and to immerse themselves in this age-old way of life. Like the simple bath, the Hjerta architecturally elevates the senses, attuning the individual with their sense of body, mind, and self. Extracurricular Competition Entry, Fall 2020. blossom what_Bathhouse and Café where_Toronto, Canada how_Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe CC As one enters adulthood, they bring childhood memories with them. It is an innocent, cleansing gift from their past that they can constantly reminisce on, as they blossom into who they are destined to become. Reflected in Blossom’s ritual-like, ceremonial concept, the distinguished coming of age process marks an inevitable, yet exciting turn in life. Occupants catch blurred glimpses of the outside world as they ascend through the stairs, peering through the dynamic curtains surrounding them: they are amidst, but not within, the water. Bidding farewell to their surroundings, they prepare to rise above, to cleanse their souls in the misty warmth of the wooden baths. From there, attention falls on the silhouetted image of those who are ascending. The light follows them, landing on the distinct threshold which marks a journey into the world above. What welcomes them is an expansive volume of luminosity. Light, posing as an illusion of water, embraces them from above, rippled yet softly distorted. Upon returning to ground level, being surrounded by a glowing pool of water, occupants reach the end of a journey. The experience leaves them rejuvenated for what awaits them, in the world beyond Blossom. 2A Design Studio, Fall 2019. Supervised by Professors Christie Pearson + David Correa. 33
