hi there!

I’m Nadia, a second-year student at the University of Waterloo pursuing an Honours Bachelors of Architectural Studies degree. Raised in Hong Kong, a city surrounded by destinations with diverse architectural styles, I’ve had the privilege of fulfilling my utmost passion, travelling. My journeys have nurtured an appreciation for how architecture varies regionally, subject to the context of the locality. The built environment is shaped in response to the needs of occupants, and the physical conditions of the site. Yet, the challenge lies within finding an innovative design responding to both requirements, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing. Observing the endless ways in which architects have responded in the past drives my passion for architecture and allows me to remain open-minded within the creative field. Experiencing architecture through travelling is a hobby that brings me immense joy; I strive to spread this happiness through my projects, while conveying different narratives that inspire me. I hope you enjoy this portfolio; it is a collection of my recent works. Thanks for stopping by; I really appreciate your time!

PEARSON ARCHITECT

20 January 2020 RE: Letter of Reference for Lok Ching Nadia Cheng To Whom It May Concern: I am happy to be a reference for Lok Ching Nadia Cheng. I worked closely with Nadia during the fall term of 2019 at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in the capacity of 2nd year studio professor. In the studio, The Function of Affect, we investigated the development of the architectural interior as a sequence of atmospheres informed by a study of affective cinematic moments. It was a pleasure to assist the development of Nadia’s final project for an urban bathhouse in our studio. She clearly appreciated and understood the lessons of the studio and was enthusiastic in applying them in her final creation, where she sequenced multiple highlycharged spaces into a satisfying totality. Nadia takes suggestions and critiques very well, thoughtfully integrating the input of instructors and other students into her work. It was exciting to see her reach the point where she could recognize what was important in the scheme while remaining flexible and open-minded on how it could develop further. She took responsibility for her design decisions, and created a very good presentation and overall project. Sincerely,

Christine Pearson MArch, BArch, BES, OAA

Recommendation for Nadia Cheng

June 2, 2020

To whom it may concern, Nadia Cheng worked at plusClover as a full-time employee from January to April in 2020. During her tenure at plusClover, Nadia worked on a series of projects: Modularity, a research project for Infrastructural modular units for outdoor urban spaces; Headland Road, a multi-unit residential project; and Artone Residence, a residential interior project in Hong Kong. Nadia joined our office during extraordinary times – within two weeks of starting at plusClover, our office shifted to working from home due to the coronavirus. As such, Nadia had to adapt quickly to a remote working situation even before she could familiarize herself with the office culture. Nonetheless, Nadia did extremely well during such trying circumstances, which speaks to her rare ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Nadia not only learns quickly, but also is extremely dependable and responsive. She has the rare ability to know when she needs to work independently, and also when to ask questions. She is consistent in setting a high standard with her work, and always manages her time well. I strongly believe that Nadia will be a valuable addition to any Architecture practice. I certainly would welcome her back at every opportunity. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Clover Lee Principal plusClover

As

enters

adulthood,

they

bring

childhood

memories with them. It is an innocent, cleansing gift from their past that they can constantly reminisce on, as they blossom into who they are destined to become. Reflected in Blossom’s ritual-like, ceremonial concept, the distinguished coming of age process marks an inevitable, yet exciting turn in life. Occupants catch blurred glimpses of the outside world as they ascend through the stairs, peering through the dynamic curtains surrounding them: they are amidst, but not within, the water. Bidding farewell to their surroundings, they prepare to rise above, to cleanse their souls in the misty warmth of the wooden baths. From there, attention falls on the silhouetted image of those who are ascending. The light follows them, landing on the distinct threshold which marks a journey into the world above. What welcomes them is an expansive volume of luminosity. Light,

Upon returning to ground level, being surrounded by a glowing pool of water, occupants reach the end of a journey. The experience leaves them rejuvenated for what awaits them, in the world beyond Blossom.

By the perimeter of Mount Fuji is a lush and dense forest

that

for

an

reason. Also known as the “suicide forest, Aokigahara is one of the most popular sites for suicide worldwide. Detour is a pavillion serving as a memorial, remembering the departed souls of the forest, while encouraging those seeking an end to their life to reconsider such actions. The curved pathway is intended to promote the idea that life will eventually improve and reverse into a better place for them, if occupants are willing to continue moving ahead and living. Placed beside the main path of the Aokigahara forest, the pavillion reminds occupants that it is normal to take detours in life. Ultimately, Detour has been designed with the hopes of leading occupants to a better place in their lives. It is a pavillion to pause and rest at, but also an opportunity to turn around to choose an alternate fate.

c o /c o o n _ project details Project: Design Studio, Winter 2019 Program: Partition system Location: Cambridge, Canada

CO/COON is a partition system designed to be used at the BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design, a space intended to promote Art, Design and Architecture within the Cambridge community. Originally designed to be used for art gallery type events, the system can be easily dismantled, stored and reconstructed for reuse at different times. Inspired by the elegance within the idea of a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, CO/COON allows multiple ‘pods’ of private space to coexist within a common area, providing an enclosed, private feeling despite being in a larger shared space amongst other occupants. Its materiality communicates coherently with the raw, wooden feeling of the BRIDGE space, and the adjustable nature of CO/COON pods allow occupants or event organizers to control desired levels of privacy and light.

Branching off from the Pearl River, the East River serves as the water source for cities in the area, such as Hong Kong. Given that heavy metals from the untreated sewage system have been discharged directly into the river, the water quality has deteriorated significantly in recent years.
