“EMBRACE FLAWS AND WORK THROUGH CHARACTER” 22 SoCa 4/2012

As an independent and self taught California native, Monica Garcia has developed a unique style of digital photography that is highly influenced by her surroundings. Driven to tell compelling stories through the art of photography, Garcia possesses a keen eye for composition. As an artist, she functions best on her toes in active and spontaneous environments. She takes to the streets when working on a photo shoot trading the conventional studio atmosphere for abandoned buildings, subways, old hotels, and Mexican meat markets. The final product, Garcia proclaims, is “gritty eye candy that provokes emotion, pretty and ugly alike”.

Inspired by David LaChappele’s use of highly saturated colors and surreal images, she began portraying tales of life in Southern California through her photography. Her art is also greatly influenced by a variety of music such as jazz, disco, and rap as well as fellow up-and-coming artist friends. She keeps her work intimate by including friends and neighbors in the process. Garcia leaves interpret - ation open to her audience, although she strives to communicate unique, eccentric, personalities, and images of life in the Inland Empire.
