The government has certain laws that apply to married couples differently than to single people. For instance, upon the death of a married person, the widowed party will most likely inherit a sizeable chunk of the deceased's estate, and will most likely receive it tax-free; different rules apply when an unmarried person passes away. Additionally, if a married person is incapacitated, the spouse will generally be able to make healthcare decisions on his or her behalf; an unmarried "significant other" doesn't automatically have such privileges. In what may be the simplest example of the legal power of a marriage, the filing of the marriage certificate itself is an opportunity for either party to be legally recognized as having changed his or her name, concurrent with the occasion. There are various other issues related to childcare, custody & financial support (in the event of a separation), legal proxies, powers of attorney, property ownership, credit reporting, etc., where different default rules apply to married and unmarried people. When disputes arise over such issues, it is the government's role to resolve those disputes in its courts, and to enforce those judgments with the long arm of its law.
