“The new Science and Technology Lab building for the Eleanor Palmer Primary School aims ‘to foster enquiring |d minds, curiosity and wonder in the world’. The new building will replace an existing Victorian shelter, currently very little used by the school. It will be used as a shared resource by the neighbouring community and other schools in London. AY Architects have worked closely with teachers, staff, local parents, governors and pupils, making up the ‘Lab RATS’ advisory group, who have met us regularly since the conception of the project, providing important input in developing the design. The brief was to create a flexible classroom space for 31 children aged 3-11 years to support a primary school teaching programme for science and technology. In addition, the Lab should be flexible to be used for after school clubs and cooking groups.”

“The design considers key subjects of the curriculum: ‘Processes and Forces’, ‘Materials’ and ‘Living Things’ |e to create a place of discovery that engages with the physical environment: light, sky, structure, materials and mechanical systems. Integrated within the roof volume are two triangular volumes that extend 1.5m higher than the main roof level to create ideal natural daylight conditions, extra space for hanging devices for science experiments, and a high level air extraction zone as part of our strategy for heating and ventilation. The building is set back from the Victorian boundary brick wall along Fortess Road. The geometry of the two tapering flat roof volumes breaks up the upper roof line, reducing the massing and visible impact of the building on the street while adding to its architectural character. A display window penetrates the boundary brick wall, acting as a sign for the Lab, providing new visual connections between the school and the street. The interior of the Lab is designed as an apothecary with display and storage areas, curiosity-cabinets, a series of sinks and worktops, fitted areas for cooking, and a dark/sound room.”

“The brief sought design proposals for a new Visitor Hub of circa 300sqm at Langley Vale Wood to support 180,000 visits per annum. Langley Vale is an area of 140 acres of mainly ancient woodland in Surrey. It is England’s First World War Centenary Wood that aims to provide tribute to those affected by the First World War while protecting the existing woodland and encourage people to enjoy the natural world. Our design is a delicate thicket: a light but dense timber framed structure situated on the edge of the wood, gently treading on the grassland and overlooking the memorial site. The main approach to the building from the west leads to an elevated covered entrance space traversing the building and overlooking the memorial field beyond. The hall is situated to the south of the entrance and the sanitary facilities are accessible to the north. A display of tree donor names is offered on the north wall of the covered entrance.

In structural and tectonic terms, the building arising from the ground is proposed with exposed timber slatted concrete walls with different colours and textures according to the scale and layout of volumes. The indoor environment is characterized by a large Foyer with long ceiling beams, double height spaces and interior volumes with exposed concrete surfaces illuminated by the large glazing open towards the river.

Students were asked to develop an experimental design project that should be informed by the notion of urban reagents. With an initial focus on research and site analyses, the project has a strong theoretical approach. The main concept was based on the content of the paper developed before the design stage: an urban reagent should have 3 components - Strength, Time and Container. So that it was suggested a mix of two different spaces: place proposed and place to propose - in order to provide multiple reasons to stop by. This concept was materialized by the set composed by one route, an institutional building and a complex of free use structures. The public space is the main element holding all the components.

Issues : new infrastructure to connect and define a new orientation system for the existing medical campus; new car parking to serve the campus and working as a compact and pertinent element integrating the structure; new connection to the city centre through the park; new borders creating open and public spaces to serve the building structures. The main idea of the project comes out in order to solve the problem of orientation in the area and provide a new function distribution. The final aim is to give the users one simple system of infra structures and services. The new structure, that depends on the existing buildings should work as new magnetic body, connecting spaces and defining areas .

Collaboration during 9 months in an architecture office based in Berlin: Bolwin Wulf Architeckten. During the internship I worked with the design competition team developing the project for a new Operations Centre - a new facility building for the city of Nuremberg, winning the 1st prize. The project included city offices, big storage areas, open spaces, workshops and specific transportation hangars, resulting in one area of 28,000 m2. I also collaborated in the second stage of the 1st prize competition for the complete renovation of the Dieburg Kreihaus / City Hall - a set of four buildings built between 1908 and 1985 in need of transformation.

Nadia Santos . Architecture Portfolio By studying the process of transformation of the former Berlin airport, Tempelhof, this paper attempts to reach a new understanding on the field of up-and-coming processes of transformation and reinterpretation of spaces, taking into account closer approaches in response to society’s interests. The reflection on the example of Tempelhof is developed considering the processes of urban transformation of the city where it is located, Berlin, with a special framework to emerging and flexible trends according to the reappropriation of empty spaces. The goal is to reflect and theorize a possible approach to the future development of Tempelhof as plan while process, framed in the tradition of urban transformation in Berlin.
