Naesbycentre - Activity book 2015

Welcome to the Naesbycentre Dear summer camp guests You are holding the Naesbycentre Activity book 2015, containing all the activities which are offered to you as guests at our summer camps. On the centre you can work with everything from tanner wool over medieval cooking to turbine boats and hikes. In the beginning of the book you will find broad and practical information on our many different offers followed by a presentation by the activity projects that we recommend you to work with. Finally you will find all our activities in alphabetical order.

Activities on the Naesbycentre We consider our many activities as some of the most important of our centre, and are constantly trying to develop our offers. We wish for our offers to be fun, exiting and challenging for all scouts, but we also want the activities to inspire to contemplation and reflection. Therefore you should take your hour, exploring the book - and consider what you want to achieve with the activities when you are doing them with your scouts. The activities are all marked with symbols as information or . The symbols will explain, what we think, is the primary purpose for the activity. You can use the symbols as a guiding line, when you are choosing amongst all of the activities. We find that the scouts get more out of the activities, if those you choose are linked in a way, so that the experience for the whole camp is greater. That is why our activities are build up around a series of projects. For instance you can choose the Viking project - "Erik the Red" or experimenting with the marvellous world of natural science in the experimental tent - see page 12-16. Many of the projects also contains different games and stories for reading aloud, which will, hopefully The smithy – a historic workshop contribute to the overall experience. A summer camp gives you an extraordinary opportunity to work with the same thing for a longer period of hour, and therefore we hope that you will cease it, and involve you deeper in the projects. For all of the activities it applies, that they are meant for groups of approximately 10 contestants. Bigger groups than this can with great advantage choose more than one activity per period.

Naesbycentre - Activity book 2015

Projects and activities The activities are, as mentioned build up around a series of projects - see page 12-16. From home you'll choose which projects you want to be involved in and which activities it must contain. To work with a project demands, that you do it for at least 3 activity periods, which means 3 mornings, 3 afternoons or a whole day. Therefore you must choose 3 activities within the project activities. When you arrive to the centre, you will get a description of the project, some background materials and possibly stories for reading aloud. A project is build up by a number of different activities, where most of the activities are box-activities. That means that you will get an idea card, which will describe the activity, along with a box of materials. Therefore it is up to you, to run the activity and returning the box with leftover materials, when you are done. For the activities containing foods, it is you responsibility to collect the ingredients. Historic workshops Some of the activities are created as historic workshops. That goes for The Smithy, Horn, Viking Jewellery, Tanner wool and cooking from the middle age. In the historic workshops, there will be a staff member in charge of running the activity, because we wish to tell you more than there can be written on an idea card. In the same hour it ensures that the scouts will get a good experience while doing it. Not all of the workshops are offered at each summer camp, so talk to your staff leader about what is offered at your camp. Choosing activities A month or two before the camp you will be send a list, on which you must write all your wishes regarding projects, sub activities and other activities. One list is for you to hold on to, the other you must send to the staff leader. The responsible for activities will coordinate the activities in a way so that most groups gets what they assign for. We recommend that you, the day before the assigned activity, prepare yourself by looking over the idea card. If you assess that you can't do all of the activities, it is important, that you tell the responsible for activities so, so that we don't prepare the activity for you for no reason.

Canoeing Hike The centre is located right by the river Susåen and are therefore an obvious opportunity for taking the scouts out for a canoeing hike. It's an unique opportunity for experiencing one of Denmark's most beautiful Canoeing hikes trough the slung river Susåen, passing the total protected Lake Tystrup-Bavelse, where Sea eagles, Fish eagles and in rare occasions the King eagle is spotted, and further down the river to either Skelby or Næstved cities. We recommend that scouts are 12+ years old, if participating in the canoeing hike with sleepover. Canoes are rented near the centre.

Going canoeing

You must contact the canoe rental place for prices, information and orders. Susaa Canoe rental: www.kanoudlejning.dk, phone: 57 64 61 44. Next, a tour possibility is described, which fits well on a summer camp. There are other routes and trips then this - contact the canoe rental place for further information of this. Canoeing hike with sleepover (Næsby bro - Næstved) The trip starts with a 3 km walk to the rental place near Næsby . Here you'll climb aboard the canoes and paddle down the river to Lake Tystrup-Bavelse. By the lakes there are more sights for an overnight stay. The next day you paddle the canoes to Næstved, where a bus stop is located 1 km away from there you'll take the bus no. 570, which will take you back to Korsvejsgaard (500 meters from the centre).

Activity symbols Subdivision of age and purpose By every activity it's noted, how old we think you should be at least, to be able to do the activity. This is meant to be a guide line, but younger children will often still be able to solve the activity; possibly just with more help from you. Furthermore every activity is marked with symbols, illustrating what we think the activity especially concerns, but naturally, you can get different and more fun out of it. Creation Explaining that you are creating a product. Somehours you can take the product home, like the steam-turbine-boats or the runes. Information Explaining that you, by curiosity in a subject, will gain new knowledge. For example in history or nature.

Skills Explaining that you will be learning a new skill or technique. Movement Explaining that, in the activity, physical movement is included, fx pool kayaks, hikes or games. Cooperation Explaining that cooperation will be necessary for solving the task.

Inventor Explaining that creativity, inventions and innovations are emphasized, like building in more storeys or the word machine. Environment Explaining that the activity contains subjects from the environment program, like plants and photosynthesises and the steam turbine. Nature guide Explaining that a nature assistant is available for the activity – see page 9 to get more information. Unique Activities marked with this icon are not found anywhere but on Naesby - don't miss this chance!

The Environment Programme The Naesbycentre is member of the "Scenes Network" (Scouts Centres of Excellence for Nature and Environment) which is a series of centres around the world, who commits working intensively with nature and environment. That is why we, for this years summer camps, have launched a new environment programme, made of five elements, symbolising our fingers - a hand. Only hands can make a difference, when we want to take responsibility for the environment. Every guest on a camp must participate actively in all of the programme, to be able to carry the environmental patch on the uniform. The environmental patch is a symbol of succeeding the programme, but more important is, that you'll get new knowledge and are willing to make a difference - now and forever. The five elements • Sorting garbage and recycling • Energy consumption • Environmental effort in your local area • Our declaration • When returning home, we will... At the preliminary weekend you will receive a flyer, and the staff member responsible for the programme will explain many more details for participating in the programme on camp. Sorting garbage Every group will, at camp start, receive six buckets and must design and build a recycling place on camp site. Colour of buckets • Dark green bucket: Compost • Yellow bucket: Plastic • White bucket: Cardboard • Grey bucket: Metal • Neon green bucket: Glass • Red bucket: Everything else

Nature Activities In the activity book you'll find many exciting activities. Amongst the symbols, you'll find an owl. This means, that a nature assistant gladly join you on the activity. You may also do it yourself if preferred. A nature assistant is a member of the staff that is educated in the nature activities. From this year you also have the possibility of borrowing an old-fashioned juicer, a machine to make sausages and an oven to smoke cheese, sausages or other delicious things. Take a day off in the nature around the centre and use nature to make nature dishes - you can also book the outdoor kitchen. We will be happy to help you with tips and recipes.

Miscellaneous Possibilities The open air kitchen On this centre we have a huge roofed kitchen. The kitchen contains two stone ovens and two wood stows and plenty of good space. It is possible to book the kitchen to do some alternative cooking instead of the usual bonfire cooking – how about making lasagne, pizza, cookies or even a whole tenderloin? See activity F-55 for more information. Shelters Spread out all over our big centre, we have 4 shelters and a Sámi shelter – a kind of hut with grass on the roof. You can borrow the shelters, and stay overnight instead of ordinary camping. In front of every shelter, there is a fire place, making a cup of coffee, the or chocolate before bedhour an option. Contact the staff responsible for the activities if you want to use these offers, or write it on your activity list, centred in the middle of this book. Tours and hikes We offer a lot of hike routes, short for the youngsters, who doesn’t want to walk as far and longer for the older scouts. It is also possible to hike on bike if that’s what you want, or a canoeing hike; that you must talk with your camp leader about. The centre is situated right in the centre of Sjaelland with all kind of sights placed all around us. Like a trip to Copenhagen, Holmegåaards glass factory, the amusement park “Bonbonland” or a refreshing swim in the nearby swimming facilities.

Common Activities The good thing about a centre camp is that you’ll have the opportunity to meet a lot of other scouts. We are always trying to arrange a number of common activities involving you. Talk to your camp leader about, what is possible when you are here. Normally there are held 1-2 common camp fires and 1 service. We also attach great importance to a common activity day, where everybody is working on a shared theme, and often the day is ended with a big dinner. We offer Giant Stratego, an activity for up to 80 people, running around all camp, looking for the coveted flag. Or Japanese Stratego, where 4 army’s battle for killing the opposite Shoguns – only made possible with the beautiful Geisha, which is in need of protection of her own. Common for every event is that it is a great opportunity to get to know scouts from different groups and even different countries. The centre also offers a number of theme races, all prepared and arranged by the staff and the leaders of your group. Normally the whole camp is participating in the theme races. Depending of the number of guests, the race can be divided into classes sorted by age.

Cooking in the open air kitchen

Talk to your camp leader about which theme races there is held when you’re here.

On a hot summer day, it is nice with a refreshing water fight or sailing across the lake in a canoe or kayak. On the opposite, water is the last thing you need, when the rain has poring down for a week and turned camp sites into muddy fields and the mood is down and wet. This project focuses on the wet element and the many approaches to working with water, for scout all ages. The activities gives you an opportunity to examining the water, experimenting in different ways and play in and with it.
