1.
Open Classes showcase examples of teaching excellence, articulate instructional practices and facilitate discussions about high quality teaching and learning. Open Class complements Peer Sharing Practice to further enable mentoring and collegial sharing opportunities among academic staff.
Class Observations are conducted to provide feedback on teaching techniques and delivery for new hires or lecturers who need to enhance competency in teaching and learning.
2.
Peer Sharing Practice (PSP) is a form of peer learning to encourage observation of collegial teaching and learning practices in the arts within the setting of a classroom.
3.
OPEN CLASS Purpose
Open classes are conducted:
. To showcase effective teaching practices in the cultivation of students’ understanding, competence and artistic awareness.
. To highlight excellent teaching practices in our learning environment.
. To document quality in the Arts pedagogy, among teaching staff.
Scope
Full-time and part- time lecturers can participate in open classes.
4.
Procedure Frequency
All Schools should have at least one open class session each semester. Full-time lecturers are to observe one open class each academic year.
PR oversees registrations for the open classes, the management of frontof-house duties and co-ordinates logistical, filming and other technical arrangements; with support from the School concerned.
Part-time lecturers are strongly encouraged to observe open classes.
Feedback and follow-up actions
Administrative arrangements
Each Open Class observer will fill out an Open Class Feedback form and submit it to PR within 5 days after the session.
The Dean of a School (DoS) will propose Open Classes to be offered semester. The Pedagogy and Research unit (PR) will schedule the Open Class with DoS and lecturers involved, and disseminate details (titles of modules, nature of classes, venues, dates, times, observers limits etc.)
PR then collates the feedback of an open class and sends a summary of the comments and / or recommendations, if any, to DoS by semester end. PR is to archive the poster, programme sheet and film of every open class.
5.
CLASS OBSERVATION Purpose
To provide feedback on teaching techniques and delivery.
.
To enhance the teaching competency of the observed lecturer.
Procedure
The observer connects with the observee to fix the date and time of the observation.
To gauge the level of student learning and engagement.
When there are two staff member teaching observers, they may choose to observe the same class session or two different class sessions.
To improve preparation and organisation of classes.
Class Observation Report
. . .
Both full-time and parttime lecturers undergo class observations.
The observer will include, as far as is possible, concrete qualitative points to explain the awarded quantitative ratings. This is within the context and content of the session observed. The report must be submitted to the specific Dean’s Office, or the OAA within 5 working days.
CLASS OBSERVATION Post-observation reflection Upon receiving the post observation reflection form from the Dean, the observee needs to fill it out, responding to the observer’s feedback, and submit this form to his/her specific Dean within 5 working days. The Dean may hold a discussion session with either the observer/ observee, or with both,
6.
if there is a need to clarify any point or comment stated in the class observation report. The Dean will then comment on the observations/ recommendations of the observer as well as the responses of the observee. The Dean will deposit a copy of the completed observation report to HR and PR in the shared drive.
7.
