CMDCM CORNER
With Command Master Chief Weba Rober ts NAF Atsugi team, It is vitally important - and let me stress this - vitally important that everyone who lives, shops, visits or for any reason journeys out into the community - be ever so mindful and cautious while driving. Most of you know that driving in Japan requires an elevated level of vigilance and care. I don't need to describe the small and complex roadways, the high-volume of cars, motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles; and the often unpredictable traffic patterns - most of you know this. Those of us who drive must respect that reality. All this on top of the fact that this is the holiday season, and during this timeframe we are all out and about trying to hurry to purchase gifts for family and friends, then turning to on mailing them out from the post office. So, start with the basics: slow down, make full and complete stops - not just at stop signs - but at any road or intersection where visibility is limited. And always look both ways before proceeding - and then do so slowly. Finally, keep your head on a swivel and watch for other traffic and pedestrians, especially at night and during inclement weather. So please be safe while enjoying the holiday period and have a plan whenever you go out.

Advances in Cultural Resources Research currently underway onboard NAF Atsugi NAF Atsugi Public Affairs Office ATSUGI – Archaeological excavations are underway at Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi, where evidence of a Jōmon Period habitation area dating back about 6,000 B.C., are being uncovered. Archaeologists working for the Kanagawa Prefectural Board of Education and Kanagawa Archaeology Foundation, have identified a pit house, as well as incise-patterned ceramics, and tools such as stone hoes and grindstones. Archaeologists anticipate that Paleolithic deposits are present below the Jōmon Period deposit from 29,000 to 16,000 years ago. The Jōmon period is a timeframe in Japanese prehistory that is traditionally dated between c. 14,000–300 BCE, during which Japan was inhabited by a diverse hunter-gatherer and early agriculturalist population united through a common Jōmon culture, which reached a considerable degree of sedentism and cultural complexity. “These excavations are very significant for the base due to the age of the relics and the fact that the Jōmon era is known for its pottery” said Starsky Peru, Environmental Director (IEPD) Supervisory Physical Scientist, PWD Environmental
Division Atsugi, Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Far East. “These findings provide an amazing and rare glimpse of how native Japanese lived in a very forgone era.” The name "cord-marked" was first applied by the American zoologist and orientalist Edward S. Morse, who discovered sherds of pottery in 1877 and subsequently translated it into Japanese as Jōmon. The pottery style characteristic of the first phases of Jōmon culture was decorated by impressing cords into the surface of wet clay and is generally

accepted to be among the oldest in the world. The area in question is located on what would have been a flat area along the Tade River, which would have provided numerous resources for its inhabitants, such as fish, wild plants, seeds, and nuts. The Jōmon period was rich in tools and jewelry made from bone, stone, shell and antler; pottery figurines and vessels; and lacquerware. It is often compared to pre-Columbian cultures of the North American Pacific Northwest
and especially to the Valdivia culture in Ecuador because in these settings cultural complexity developed within a primarily hunting-gathering context with limited use of horticulture.

The Final Word WITH NAVAL AIR FACILITY ATSUGI COMMANDING OFFICER
NAF Atsugi Community, Thanksgiving dinner was held on base and our galley crew put on one heck of a spread! Turkey and all the sides, roast beef, desserts - everything was fantastic, and I would like to thank all of the single sailors and families that came out to enjoy the feast! Again, Bravo Zulu to the galley staff for whipping together an outstanding display and feast for all to enjoy! For those who did not make the opportunity to taste this year's feast at the galley, I hope you all had a wonderful day away from NAFA's galley! Our folks did such a fantastic job, and it's just another example of the dedication that each and every service provider aboard the installation continues to show NAFA, you continue to go above and beyond, and to do your part in providing a sense of normality to everyday life. For some, being away from home for the holidays is not new. But it is new for a bunch of others. So again, thank you all for helping bring a sense of home to all of us during this holiday period and while we continue to fight against COVID-19! So where do things stand with COVID-19 both inside and outside the fence line? Well at least from my seat, things are absolutely fantastic both inside and outside the fence line! It's been over two months since NAFA had a positive case, and the country sits at a positive rate that we haven't seen since June of 2020. I believe this occurred due in no small part to the combination of health protocols and vaccinations, and this led to the relaxing of HPCON levels at all bases in the country to HPCON alpha. Now, we've heard of the new omicron variant that is making its way through southern Africa and elsewhere. I think it will take some time to understand what this new variant is and what it is not. In the meantime, please continue to follow the PHE and health guidelines of local governments. I'll take this time to thank everyone who continue to follow the health and safety measures that remain in place and that, frankly, have kept us and continue to keep us all safe. For now, the weather is beautiful and fall is around us. So, please get out and enjoy this beautiful country and our neighbors! Just continue to do so in accordance with the health and safety measures. Thank you!
