(PTI): The government on Friday said it expects more companies to reduce maximum retail prices of cooking oils by up to Rs 15 per litre to pass on the benefit of fall in global commodity prices to consumers.

Amid cooking oil prices ruling high in the domestic market, the government on Wednesday directed edible oil companies to reduce the prices.
Following the directive, Mother Dairy, on Thursday, reduced the prices of soyabean and rice bran oil up to Rs 14 per litre. It expects a reduction of MRP of sunflower oil in the next 15-20 days.
Mother Dairy, which is one of the leading milk suppliers in Delhi-NCR, sells edible oils under the Dhara brand.
India meets 60 per cent of its requirement of edible oils through imports.
“Some companies which have not reduced their prices and whose MRP (Maximum Retail Price) is higher than other brands have also been advised to reduce their prices,” the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Stating that the government is continuously monitoring the prices and availability of edible oils in the country, the ministry said it is imperative that the benefit of reduced duty structure on edible oils and the continuous significant drop in global prices be immediately passed on to the end consumers without fail.
“The consumers can look forward to saving some extra money in their kitchen budget,” it noted.
In the July 6 meeting, the ministry said the manufacturers and refiners were informed that a downward trend in international prices of imported edible oils is a “very positive picture”.
Therefore, the domestic edible oil industry needs to ensure that the prices in the domestic market also drop commensurately. And, this price drop has to be passed on to the consumers expeditiously and not in a “laggard fashion”, it said.
In the July 6 meeting, the manufacturers and refiners were asked to reduce the price of cooking oils sold to distributors immediately so that the price drop is not diluted in anyway, it said.
The ministry said it was also impressed upon the companies that whenever a reduction in price to distributors is made by the manufactures/refiners, the benefit should be passed on to the consumers by the industry.
The issues like price data collection, control order on edible oils and packaging of edible oils were also discussed during the meeting on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the industry had informed that the global prices of different edible oils have fallen by USD 300-450 per tonne in the last one month but it takes time to reflect in the retail markets and the retail prices are expected to come down in the coming days, according to the statement.
In May, Fortune brand had reduced MRP of refined sunflower oil, soyabean oil and kachi ghani oil by Rs 10 per litre after the government directive to manufacturers and refiners to pass on the fall in global edible oil prices to consumers.
According to the ministry, the reduction in edible oil prices came in the wake of a cut in the import duty.
The edible oil prices in the international market are witnessing a dramatic fall, however, the situation in the domestic market is slightly different as the fall in the prices are gradual, it said.

(AGENCIES): The government has decided to appoint former NITI Aayog chief executive Amitabh Kant as India’s Sherpa for the G20 grouping. Kant will replace commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, who offered to shed this role due to his mounting workload.
Given that India is assuming the G20 presidency later this year, a full-time Sherpa who can devote a lot of time for the job is required, a source told FE. This has prompted the government to appoint Kant, whose six-year term at the NITI Aayog ended on June 30, Financial Express reported.
Apart from handling a number of critical ministries (commerce, industry, textiles, food and consumer affairs), Goyal is also the leader of the Rajya Sabha. With the monsoon session
Amitabh Kant
of Parliament expected to start later this month, Goyal’s foreign travel is set to get curtailed, which would affect his work as the Sherpa.
Moreover, he has been spearheading free trade agreement negotiations with key economies, including the EU, the UK, Canada, Israel and Australia. In light of these, Goyal, who was appointed the Sherpa in September last year, had offered to step down from this role, said the source.
A Sherpa is typically a personal representative of the leader of a member nation at the G20 and some other groupings. The Sherpa usually engages in planning, negotiation and implementation of tasks through the G20 Summit. They help prepare the agenda, drum up consensus at the highest levels, and take part in a series of pre-summit consultations to negotiate their leaders’ positions.
A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, Kant had served as the secretary of the erstwhile Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (currently DPIIT), where he spearheaded initiatives such as Start-up India. At the NITI Aayog, he was instrumental in firming up a series of production-linked incentive schemes to spur domestic manufacturing and boost growth in the wake of the pandemic.
Call for fast-tracking of medical colleges in Nagaland
(From p-1)
She said require ment for specialists would increase after the establishment of two medical colleges(Kohima and Mon) as teaching faculties and senior residents at the upcoming Kohima Medical College alone would require 88 faculty members in the first year itself.
She urged the students to make up their mind and meet the criteria of the National Medical Commission to enter into the medical colleges. She explained that to join a medical college, a medical student had to first complete post-graduation, become senior residents and follow the norms of National Medical Commission.
Kire said the Kohima Medical College would require at least six professors, 20 associate professors, 24 assistant professors, 38 senior resident/tutor, totalling to 88 faculty members.
Further, each year the college would have to renew Letter of Permission (to start a college) with 88 faculty members.During the first renewal, the college would need 124 faculty, second renewal would require 134, while the third, fourth and fifth renewalswould require 151 faculty members, she added.
She reiterated her appeal to NMSA members to go for pre-clinicals and also write for both national and international journals to help them in their future career.
In his presidential address, NMSA president Kuveluzo Chizo noted that Nagaland was far behind other States in the health care system due to non-existenceof medical colleges in the State. He appealed to the authorities to give priority to completing the first medical college and medical professionals when it came to employment.
Due to shortage of healthcare personnel, he said the State government must create more posts for MBBS and BDS in every primary health centre and district hospital. Keeping in mind the WHO-recommended doctor-population ratio of 1:1000 – he said in the case with Nagaland it was 1:4,000 in Nagaland. Chizo called for a free, fair and equal opportunity for all medical graduates in medical officer recruitment via advertised NPSC exams, both written and viva, to avoid dilution of giving the best healthcare to the people.
He also stressed on increasing the book grant of Rs 18,000 annually considering the rising costs of books.
The scheduled threeday event will include panel discussions on medical college and employment, medical bond and service rules, blood donation drive, devotional service and a workshop.

DNSU alleges anomalies in Dimapur govt...
(From p-1)
Wondering how long the student community would have to suffer the consequences of the incompetence of the Department of School Education (DoSE), they asked why the government officials and heads of offices in DoSE were playing safe with their blame games instead of carrying out their duties and responsibilities towards the schools.
Declaring that DNSU could not turn a blind eye to such appalling matters and distresses faced by the schools across the district, they appeal to DoSE and the State government to stop being self-centred and act ignorant, but provide the requirements to the schools and sincerely work towards uplifting the students. They also urged the department to provide children-friendly infrastructure and create student-friendly environment in all government schools in the district.
They further reminded headmasters and teachersin-charge of the schools to maintain proper records of teachers’ attendance and take responsibility accordingly. They warned that failure to adhere to their appeal by the schools, DoSE and the government would not be ignored and that they would confront them.

TOKYO, JUL 8 (AP):
Born into a prominent political family, Shinzo Abe, who was fatally shot at a campaign event Friday in western Japan, had been the country’s longest-serving prime minister. While credited with bringing a degree of stability to Japan following a period of economic malaise and constant turnover among leaders, Abe angered neighbours South Korea and China — along with many Japanese — with his nationalistic rhetoric and calls to revise the country’s pacifist constitution. Here is a look at some key dates in Abe’s life and career. Sept. 21, 1954: Abe is born in Tokyo, the son of Shintaro Abe, who served as Japan’s foreign minister, and grandson of Nobusuke Kishi, a former prime minister. 1977: Graduates from Seikei University in Tokyo with a degree in political science, after which he moves to the U.S. to study public
THE HAGUE, JUL 8 (IANS): Europe is facing a new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic triggered by the highly-transmissible BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of Omicron, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA). “We see a new wave of Covid-19 in many members of the European Union,” Xinhua news agency quoted Marco Cavaleri, head of Biological Health Threats and Vaccines Strategy of the EMA, as saying during an online press conference from Amsterdam.
“The wave is driven by BA.4 and BA.5 which are highly-transmissible,” Cavaleri added.
“Based on current predictions, BA.4 and BA.5 are expected to become dominant across the European countries, likely replacing all other variants by the end of July.” In April, the EMA already advised people aged 80 and above to get a second booster vaccine.
Now, Cavaleri repeated that message and also suggested a second booster for those aged from 60 to 79, as well as medically vulnerable people of any age.
“Although there is no evidence that the variants make people sicker than earlier strains of the virus, the increase in transmission among older age groups is starting to translate into severe diseases,” Cavaleri said.
“As this new wave is unfolding across Europe, it is essential to maintain the protection of vulnerable groups and avoid any postponement of vaccination.”
The EMA is open to various next-generation Covid vaccines and willing to consider those adapted to the currently predominant Omicron subvariants.
However, these vaccines could come too late for the autumn vaccination campaigns planned by the EU member states, according to Cavaleri.
The EMA therefore indicated a preference so far for vaccines already authorized.
“The authorized vaccines still give good protection against increased hospitalization, severe illness and death,” Cavaleri said.
LONDON, JUL 8 (PTI):
The race to elect a new Conservative Party leader to succeed Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister is gathering gradual momentum with two more candidates throwing their hat in the ring on Friday to join Indian-origin Suella Braverman. Tom Tugendhat, Chair of the powerful House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, declared his intention to contest soon after UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps indicated he will also be vying for the top job. There are now four confirmed contenders, including Tory backbench MP Steve Baker, since Johnson announced his resignation as Tory leader on Thursday. The 58-year-old member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip in London plans to stay in charge as caretaker Prime Minister until the process of electing his successor is completed. “In politics no one is remotely indispensable and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times,” Johnson said in his resignation speech on Thursday on the steps of Downing Street.
A timetable for the Tory leadership race is due to be confirmed next week by the party’s 1922 Committee and the new Prime Minister is expected to be in place at 10 Downing Street by September. “I am putting together a broad coalition of colleagues that will bring new energy and ideas to government and, finally, to bridge the Brexit divide that has dominated our recent history,” Tugendhat, a former soldier, writes in ‘The Daily Telegraph’ about his leadership bid. “I have served before – in the military, and now in Parliament. Now, I hope to answer the call once again as prime minister. It’s time for a clean start. It’s time for renewal,” said the MP for Tonbridge and Malling in south-east England. The 49-year-old is considered a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister as a member of the One Nation Group of Conservatives, with the backing of a considerable group of his party colleagues. Shapps, meanwhile, has been described as a “great choice” for leader by Robert Courts, a minister in his department, who said the party needed someone “who has experience” and is “able to campaign”, a reference to Shapps’ former role as Tory party chairman.

policy at the University of Southern California for three semesters. 1979: Begins working at Kobe Steel as the firm was expanding its presence abroad. 1982: Leaves the company to pursue new positions at the Foreign Ministry and with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. 1993: First elected as a LDP legislator representing the southwestern prefecture of Yamaguchi. Abe, already viewed as a conservative, becomes a member of and eventually leads the party’s largest faction, Seiwakai, that had once been headed by his father, who died in 1991. 2005: Abe is appointed chief cabinet secretary under Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, during which he leads negotiations to return Japanese citizens abducted to North Korea. The same year, he is elected head of the LDP, putting him in line to take over as prime minister. Sept. 26, 2006: Abe becomes Japan’s prime minister for the first time, overseeing economic reforms while taking a hard line on North Korea and seeking to engage with South Korea and China. 2007: Following electoral defeats that saw the LDP lose control of the legislature for the first time in 52 years, Abe resigns as prime minister, citing health reasons. Abe has been suffering from ulcerative colitis but was able to control it with medication. 2012: After again being elected LDP president, Abe becomes prime minister for the second time. 2013: Seeking to boost growth, Abe launches his “Abenomics” policies featuring easy lending and structural reforms. Japan’s relations with China undergo a particularly rough patch but begin to improve after Abe meets with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the APEC summit in Beijing. 2014-2020: Re-elected LDP leader, he serves two additional terms as prime minister for a total of four, during which he develops close relations with thenpresident Donald Trump, holding summits and golfing together. Aug. 28, 2020: Announces he will step down as prime minister, again citing health reasons, after his ulcerative colitis flares up again. By that point, Abe had already become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. 2021: Despite leaving office, Abe shows he can still rile up Beijing with comments on Taiwan, the self-governing island China claims as its own territory and threatens to attack. In a speech, Abe warned that “military adventure would lead to economic suicide.” July 8, 2022: Abe is fatally shot while giving a speech at a campaign event in the city of Nara. Police arrest a male suspect but no motive was immediately known.
TOKYO, JUL 8 (AGEN-
CIES): Former Japan Prime Minister and influential politician Shinzo Abe was shot dead earlier today, July 8, during a political rally being conducted in Nara City. Soon after he was shot in the chest, a man named Tetsuya Yamagami was arrested by the local police, reports DNA India. Yamagami had allegedly shot Shinzo Abe with a handmade shotgun, with the bullet reportedly putting a hole in the former PM’s heart. He was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a bullet wound in his chest and succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Now, the local police have said that Tetsuya Yamagami revealed the reason behind shooting Shinzo Abe during the political rally. According to local media reports from Japan, Yamagami said during the police interrogation that he was “dissatisfied” with Shinzo Abe.
Further, the Nara City police said that Yamagami “held a grudge against a particular organisation, and that he committed the crime because he believed former prime minister Abe had a connection to it.”
Though not much has been revealed about the killer and his motives for killing the former PM, Yamagami was reportedly not satisfied with the political standpoint of Shinzo Abe. More details regarding Tetsuya’s interrogation are yet to be revealed.
Tetsuya Yamagami allegedly shot Shinzo Abe while the latter was addressing the crowd during a public rally. Yamagami had fired using a shotgun which was reportedly handmade, using a 3D printer among other tools.

Ukrainian official warns of ‘catastrophe’ in captured city
P O K R O V S K (UKRAINE), JUL 8 (AP):
A Ukrainian regional official warned Friday of deteriorating living conditions in a city captured by Russian forces two weeks ago, saying Sievierodonetsk is without water, power or a working sewage system while the bodies of the dead decompose in hot apartment buildings.
Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the Russians were unleashing indiscriminate artillery barrages as they try to secure their gains in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province. Moscow this week claimed full control of Luhansk, but the governor and other Ukrainian officials said their troops retained a small part of the province.
“Luhansk hasn’t been fully captured even though
Local resident Viacheslav walks on debris of a residential building damaged in Sievierodonetsk.
the Russians have engaged all their arsenal to achieve that goal,” Haidai told The Associated Press. “Fierce battles are going on in several villages on the region’s border. The Russians are relying on tanks and artillery to advance, leaving scorched earth.”
Russia’s forces “strike every building that they think could be a fortified position,” he said. “They aren’t stopped by the fact that civilians are left there and they die in their homes and courtyards. They keep firing.”
Occupied Sievierodonetsk, meanwhile, “is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe,” the governor wrote on social media. “The Russians have completely destroyed all the critical infrastructure, and they are unable to repair anything.”
Luhansk is one of two provinces that make up the Donbas, a region of mines and factories where proMoscow separatists have fought Ukraine’s army for eight years and declared independent republics that Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized before he sent troops into Ukraine.
After asserting full control of Luhansk, Putin said Russian forces would have a chance to rest and recoup, but other parts of eastern Ukraine have come under sustained bombardment. The Russian leader warned Kyiv it should quickly accept Moscow’s terms or brace for the worst. “Everybody should know that largely speaking, we haven’t even yet started anything in earnest,” Putin said while speaking with leaders of the Kremlin-controlled parliament Thursday.
Ukraine’s presidential office said Friday that at least 12 civilians were killed and another 30 wounded by Russian shelling over the last 24 hours. Two cities in Donetsk — the other Donbas province — experienced the heaviest barrage, with six people killed and 21 wounded.
In northeast Ukraine, another four people were killed and nine were wounded in Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, where Russian shelling hit residential areas.
Commenting on Putin’s ominous statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian leader was reacting to statements by Ukraine’s government and its Western allies about defeating Russia on the battlefield. “Russia’s potential is so big that just a small part of it has been used in the special military operation,” “ Peskov told reporters Friday. “And so Western statements are utterly absurd and just add to the grief of the Ukrainian people.”
Palestinian prez, Israeli PM hold 1st call
Mahmoud Abbas and Yair Lapid RAMALLAH, JUL 8
(AP): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday received a call from Israel’s caretaker prime minister, Yair Lapid, the first such conversation between Abbas and an Israeli premier in years.
The call came amid a rare flurry of high-level Israeli-Palestinian contacts ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank next week. The talks focused on calming tensions and coordinating security ahead of the visit. A statement from Lapid’s office said he spoke with Abbas about “the continuation of cooperation and the need to ensure quiet and calm.” Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Abbas aide, said Lapid congratulated Abbas on Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday starting Saturday, and “discussed the latest situation briefly,” without elaborating. Abbas received Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz at his headquarters in the occupied West Bank town of Ramallah on Thursday and also spoke to Israeli President Isaac Herzog by phone.
The peace process collapsed more than a decade ago. High-level meetings between Israeli and Palestinian leaders are rare and tend to focus on day-to-day economic and security coordination. Gantz met with Abbas a couple of times last year and announced measures to improve economic conditions in the occupied West Bank.
Lapid and Gantz, both centrists, are serving in a caretaker capacity ahead of elections planned for Nov 1, in which religious and nationalist parties that take a hard line toward the Palestinians are expected to retain their majority in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

Streaming giant Netflix is helping finance Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s movie comeback following his much-publicised defamation trial against ex-wife and actress Amber Heard that he eventually won.
According to aceshowbiz.com, the 59-year-old will portray King Louis XV in the French-language film ‘La Favorite’, which was previously reported to be titled ‘Jeanne du Barry’. Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the film in France, people familiar with the deal tell Bloomberg.
The acquisition of the film’s rights will be used by the producers to help finance the production. Under the deal, the period piece will be hitting the streamer 15 months following its theatrical release. Netflix, however, does not have the rights to stream the movie in other territories and is not involved in the making of the picture.
Directed by Maiwenn Le Besco, La Favorite will tell the story of Jeanne Becu, an impoverished seamstress who rises through the ranks of Louis XV’s court to become his official mistress. Le Besco also stars as Jeanne
In a year when the world is celebrating the golden jubilee of ‘The Godfather’, James Caan, one of the film’s many actors who’ll never be forgotten, passed away on Wednesday (U.S. Pacific Time), according to an announcement by his family on Twitter. Though the real Louis XV ruled over France for nearly 59 years, he “died as an unpopular king...accused of corruption and debauchery,” Variety wrote in January. Filming is scheduled to start later this summer across France and will last for about three months. The movie is expected to be ready for theatrical release in the country in 2023. Caan also had substantial roles in other notable films, including ‘Misery’, ‘Elf’, ‘Thief’, ‘Godfather Part II’, ‘Brian’s Song’ and ‘The Gambler’, notes ‘Variety’, adding that Sonny’s violent end in a vendetta killing in Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic movie -- “riddled, as he is, with dozens of bullets -- is one of the most memorable scenes in a film filled with them”.
Caan, according to ‘Variety’, initially auditioned for the role of Michael, the college-educated war-hero son who would ultimately become Don, and the studio, Paramount, supported this casting for a time, but Al Pacino, as we all know, was cast as Michael and Caan as Sonny “as part of a complex compromise between Paramount and Coppola”.
Coppola and Caan, incidentally, were classmates at Hofstra University, where the Bronx-born James Edmund Caan went after studying at Michigan State University (he played American football for the university team).
Caan, who was working till 2013 and even lent his voice to ‘The Godfather’ video games, would repeatedly essay characters with a penchant for violence, notes ‘Variety’. His most notable decade, though, was the 1970s.
In addition to ‘The Godfather’, to quote from ‘Variety’, Caan’s signature films from the 1970s include Mark Rydell’s ‘Cinderella Liberty’ (1973), in which he played a sailor in love with a hooker; Karel Reisz’s ‘The Gambler’ (1974), where he played a man with a serious addiction for the roll of the dice; the Sam Peckinpah actioner, ‘The Killer Elite’ (1975), a story of CIA assassins that reunited him

Proper sleep is essential, and a widely used scoring system for heart and brain health is being redefined to reflect that.
Since 2010, the American Heart Association has said seven modifiable components – maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, being physically active, eating a healthy diet and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar – were key to ideal cardiovascular health.
Those components, dubbed Life’s Simple 7, became a common way for doctors and patients to rate and discuss heart and brain health. It’s also been a key research tool, used in more than 2,500 scientific papers.
Sleep duration joins those seven original metrics in a revised scoring tool, now called Life’s Essential 8, which published Wednesday as an AHA presidential advisory in the journal Circulation.
The update is about much more than adding sleep, said AHA president Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, who led the expert panel that wrote the advisory. The new score incorporates 12 years of research and enhances its evaluation of diet, exercise and more.
“We’re hoping that this will, in fact, be a moment of empowerment, a moment of optimism for people to think positively about their health,” said Lloyd-Jones, a cardiologist, epidemiologist and chair of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. “And this is a good way for them to measure it today, monitor it over time and focus on ways to maintain and improve it.”
Adults should average seven to nine hours of sleep a night, the advisory says. For children, the amount varies by age.
Lloyd-Jones, who led the creation of the original seven categories in 2010, said sleep’s importance was clear even then. But it was difficult to agree on how to score it, because sleep information wasn’t being collected in large national databases.
“Now it is,” he said, and “the science has shown us how sleep is part and parcel of cardiovascular health.”
The advisory notes that both too much and too little sleep are associated with heart disease and that poor sleep health is linked to poor psychological health, an important driver of heart disease.
“And of course, sleep affects all the other seven metrics here as well,” LloydJones said.
Cheryl Anderson, dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California San Diego, called Life’s Essential 8 “a big deal” both for health care professionals and people who want to understand their cardiovascular health.
Anderson, who co-wrote the advisory, said the update is “a really good recognition of how science has changed, and our ability to adapt according to the changes.”
The revisions introduce a 100-point measure of heart health, which can be taken online at www.heart.org/lifes8.
The new score replaces a 14-point scale and tweaks several of the original categories.
On smoking, for example, the old measure considered only traditional cigarette use. The new score includes nicotine use and exposure from e-cigarettes, as well as the effects of secondhand exposure. The new score also shifts from emphasizing total cholesterol in favor of measuring non-HDL cholesterol. It’s now calculated by subtracting “good” HDL cholesterol from total cholesterol, leaving just a measurement of the “bad” types of cholesterol. The new tool also expands how blood glucose can be evaluated.
The system allows for more precise evaluation of exercise levels, Lloyd-Jones said. And it looks at diet in a new way. “Before, we had five very clunky yes-or-no metrics to say whether someone had a healthy diet or not. And that wasn’t really appropriate for all different types of eating patterns and cultures.”

Anderson said the new diet component rates how closely someone follows a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, type of diet.
But although the measure broadens the foods evaluated, people shouldn’t focus on single items, Anderson said. “We want to think about the whole package. There is no one food or nutrient that will completely overhaul one’s cardiovascular health.”
Some key components of heart health, such as stress, are not part of the new score.
“Stress is real,” LloydJones said. “It’s an important part of all of our lives. But it’s hard to measure how we internalize that stress, and what the effect is on our health status.” The advisory discusses the importance of both psychological health and the societal and environmental factors known as the social determinants of health, which include whether someone has access to healthy food, medical care or a safe place to exercise. But although Lloyd-Jones called them “foundational” for heart health, he said such factors couldn’t be boiled down into something that fit the scoring system.
The old scoring system sorted responses in its seven categories as either “poor,” “intermediate” or “ideal.” Fewer than 1% of people in the U.S. across all age groups reached the overall “ideal” level, primarily because of diet, the advisory says.
But for people who want to improve their heart health, the new approach makes progress easier to see. “The positive changes don’t have to be really big,” Anderson said. “They can be moderate. And you can still get credit for it within this new approach.”
Good heart health begins with talking with a doctor to know how you’re doing in all eight categories, Lloyd-Jones said. Improvement in any of them helps.
“If I have three or four things of the eight that are suboptimal that I could work on, do I need to tackle three or four at once? Absolutely not,” he said. “The data show us that picking and improving one thing will actually have a measurable impact on improving your health and improving your health outcomes.” So people shouldn’t feel overwhelmed, he said. “It doesn’t really matter which one you pick. Pick the one that you’re going to succeed on. And that’s the way to move your cardiovascular health forward.”
