‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ triumphs at BAFTA Awards

AGerman remake of anti-war classic “All Quiet on the Western Front” was the big winner at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, triumphing in the key categories at the ceremony seen as an indicator for next month’s Oscars.

One from the perspective of a young German soldier, the Netflix drama had led nominations, with 14 nods, making it one of the most recognised films not in the English language in BAFTA’s history.

It won seven awards overall: best film, adapted screenplay, film not in the English language, director for Edward Berger, cinematography, sound and original score.

Cate Blanchett won the leading actress prize for her portrayal of a gay conductor of a Berlin orchestra whose career comes tumbling down due to an abuse scandal in “Tár”, an undertaking she described as “very dangerous and career-ending potentially”.

“Banshees”, about two feuding friends on an island off the coast of Ireland, won outstanding British film, both supporting acting categories for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan as well as original screenplay.

“Navalny”, about jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, won the documentary category.

Filmmakers dedicated the award to the Navalny family and Bulgarian investigative journalist Christo Grozev.

Sandy Powell became the first costume designer to get the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honour bestowed by the Academy.

The BAFTAs also remembered Britain’s late Queen Elizabeth, who died in September. Actress Helen Mirren, who won both a BAFTA and an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth in 2006 film “The Queen”, led a tribute.

The department of Commerce, Unity College organized its inter-collegiate commerce festival “Commvanza” 2023 on February 18 under the theme “Fostering Sustainability and Equitability”. The events of the festival were - The Entrepreneur, Quiz O Mania, Group Discussion, Turncoat, Shutterbug and Mr. & Ms. Commvanza.

A total of 14 colleges across Nagaland participated in the festival in various events. The overall winner was Unity College and overall runners-up was Dimapur Government College.

The participating colleges were C-Edge College, Mount Mary College, Pranabananda Women’s College, Patkai Christian College, St. Joseph University, MGM College, Dimapur Government College,

Tetso College, Livingstone Foundation International College, S.D. Jain Girls College, City College of Arts and Commerce, Public College, North East Christian University and Unity

College. CEO EduCentre School of Business, Lezo Putsure, graced the festival as the chief guest.

Metal band “Version2” dropped their second original “Walk The Talk” an Official Music Video on February 20. The band believed that the song will send a strong message to the incoming law makers of the state in particular as election is knocking at the door and the entire state is geared up for the big outcome.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan says after spending over three decades in the movies his personal likes are “diminishing” and he wants to choose characters “people would like me to play”.

The 57-year-old star, who is basking in the blockbuster success of his latest big screen release “Pathaan”, said with time he has evolved as an actor.

“Now I like to play what I think people would like me to play…I have evolved as an actor I think. My personal likes are diminishing,” Shah Rukh said in response to a fan’s question about his favourite genre during an #AskSRK session on Twitter. “Pathaan”, which released last month, marked the superstar’s first outing in four years in a lead role. The Yash Raj Films project, directed by Siddharth Anand, is inching closer towards Rs 1000 crore mark on the global box office. When one of the users asked him about his routine during his break from the movies, Shah Rukh said: “I just sat at home and watched all the films that I could to become an audience again and not be a movie maker.”

This year, the actor will also be seen in Atleedirected “Jawan” and Rajkumar Hirani’s “Dunki”. Shah Rukh said he is in no mood to slow down and taking retirement from acting is out of the question.

“I will never retire from acting… I will have to be fired… And maybe even then I will come back hotter,” he replied to a fan curious about his replacement as the biggest superstar of Bollywood post his retirement.

While he would continue acting, the actor said he gets “awkward seeing myself on screen”.

When one of the fans from France asked the superstar about his reaction to bringing people of all colours from across the world together through his movies, Shah Rukh said people are always united and a good film just gives them the reason to show the unity.

“All people are actually united..a good film just gives them a reason to show the unity in happiness…” he wrote.

“Pathaan”, also starring John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, features high-octane action sequences. But for Shah Rukh, the most difficult part of the filming was giving “body shots”.

“The body shots… I was very shy and very cold!” the actor tweeted.

Post “Jawan”and “Dunki”, Shah Rukh said he hasn’t locked any projects.

“I haven’t really started listening to scripts yet. Want to sit back and enjoy the release of these two films and then decide,” he added. Shah Rukh advised his fans to not pay attention to gossip about his future films and wait for him to make the official announcement.

“Not just about #Pathaan 2 but every work of mine I will announce and say it to you guys personally. Please wait for me to tell you the truth, not listen to stupid gossip!” the actor wrote.

Astate of the art audit orium at Tetso College christened Lorin Hall (in memory of its late founder Dr. P.S. Lorin) was inaugurated by NBCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Zelhou Keyho on Monday.

The multipurpose auditorium with a sitting capacity of more the 450 consists of SMD Full Color Concert Stage LED Screen Panel, audio, lighting, and air-conditioned seating will cater to large meetings, talk shows, presentations, and performances of the college.

The grand opening program kicked off with the unveiling of the building plaque and a dedicatory prayer by Rev. Dr Zelhou Keyho, followed by the processional and watering of the Tree of Excellence by various school heads.

Keyho remembered the late founder Dr. P.S. Lorin and the humble beginnings of the college, taking his life as an example of God’s faithfulness.

As a man of service who persevered, Dr. P.S. Lorin embodied the idea that Christian faith demands deeds and not just words, and that everyone have to take “risks in life to achieve something,”.
