DIMAPUR: Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR-North) conducted various programmes across the state.

Jalukie Bn: Jalukie battalion of Assam Rifles organised awareness lecture on “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan” on March 13 at Kipeuzang Village and carried out cleanliness drive in collaboration with the Ndunglwa Village, Peren district.

Assam Rifles said the programme was organised with an objective to address the issue of drug abuse among the local population in the area. The objective of the lecture was to raise awareness for a drug-free and healthy society, and it covered the harmful effects of drug abuse. During the programme, villagers were urged to report any instances of drug sales and drug abuse. In addition to the lecture, the event also informed attendees about the vacancies for tradesmen in Assam Rifles and encouraged them to join the Security Forces for the betterment of society as a whole. In a separate event, Assam Rifles also carried out “Say No to Tobacco” campaign at Old Jalukie and Gaili Namdi village in which a series of events to include an awareness lecture titled, “Say No to Tobacco” and how such persons could be helped within the family and society. Jalukie battalion also gave mini tablets to Government Primary School in Upper Jalukie Village and also organised “Say No to Tobacco” cam- paign at Villages across Peren district on March 14.

Jalukie battalion organised an awareness cum motivational lecture for youth to join Indian Army/Assam Rifles in Peren Government College, Peren Town on March 15. The battalion said the programme was organised to create awareness particularly among the youth about joining Security Forces. Youth were also briefed about various assistance, guidance and training facilities provided by Assam Rifles in enabling them to join security forces.

Ghaspani Bn: Ghaspani battalion of Assam Rifles organizsed pipe band display and held a motivational talk on the theme, “Patriotism and Unity in Diversity” on March 14 at SFS Higher Secondary

School Medziphema, Chumukedima district.

The battalion said the event was organised as part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” campaign which was attended by around 800 students and teaching/ administrative staff of the school. As part of the event, an awareness talk on “know your armed forces” was also held by the unit.

Mon Bn: Mon battalion of Assam Rifles constructed rain water harvesting and supply scheme on March 15 at Nyanhu Village of Mon district.

Shamator: Shamator battalion/7 Dental Unit of Assam Rifles organised school oral health programme on March 15 at Straightway Mission School, ITC Dan, Noklak district.

DIMAPUR: A hands-on trainings on banana fibre extraction its value addition and vermicomposting were organised by Science and Technology Intervention in North Eastern RegionTechnology Facilitation Centre (STINER-TFC) Nagaland Centre, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) Nagaland University (NU) Medziphema Campus on March 10 and March 14 at Kashanyu Village, Tseminyu district and Zuheshe Village, Niuland district respectively.

A press release by SASRD, NU, Medziphema informed that the trainings under the initiative of project incharge STINERTFC, SASRD, NU, Medziphema Campus, professor Akali Sema, focused on creating awareness among the native people to realize the economic values of the banana plant, the various aveneus that could be generated through and how STINER as a centre could intervene in bringing in and introducing relevant and need based technologies for the benefit of the people. Speaking on the concept of banana fibre extraction and craft making, project assistant, STINER-TFC, Bikram Ghimere emphasised on the importance of utilizing the rich resources of the region and develop them into economic generating activities. Ghimere specifically mentioned that the banana plantation in entire Nagaalnd still lies unutilized, while in other states of the country this waste was being converted into various economic and employment generating aveneus. He said

Further, Ghimere stressed on mass production of the fibre while mentioning that the state was unable to meet its export demand and how collectively through cluster formation in the region this project could be made into a self sustaining and employment generating enterprise. In a demonstration of banana fibre extracting,

MTS, STINER-TFC, Vibito Savino gave step wise practical demonstration of the procedure involved in extraction and its value addition.

A practical session on vermi-composting was also conducted, where Bikram Ghimere accentuated on the importance and scope of vermi-composting in converting household and farm wastes into successful home-based income generating avenues. A total of 75 participants were sensitized at the training programme.
