An interactive and generative design tool for UK social housing Cost
Quality
Time
Project Overview This project leveraged a Machine Learning algorithm within Grasshopper (Rhino 6) to design an interactive tool in which users are able to manually select their priorities and recieve real-time feedback in the display window. The variables are derived from the Housing Quality Indicators, an evaluation tools used at the start of construction by the UK Government. This tool was applied for the design of social housing in Manchester, where Design for Manufacture and Offsite construction was utilised for the construction strategy.

Low Cost Design Outcome As shown above, the user has selected Cost as a highest priority factor. This results in a design outcome (shown left) which has a reduced cost. This results in a social housing scheme that reduces the number of components through a simplified form and greater standardisation (externally and internally).
Balanced Design Outcome 9
COST QUALITY TIME

Changing one factor, Quality, results in the scheme (shown above and upon the previous page) which features greater variation in the final design.

Adaptive Re-Use using Space Syntax Working with the MMU Estates Team on the Righton building (shown left), this project utilised Space Syntax theory to spatially address the adoption of Big Data in estate management through the Internet of Things (IoT). This project formulated a building typology which entangled sustainable energy use with emergent technologies through a generative design strategy.

Cityzen Game and Website Sort by:
My final MA Architecture thesis was in partnership with the developers of the Northern Gateway (The Far East Consortium, Farrell’s and Manchester City Council) and involved the construction of an online multiplayer game to balance environmental sustainability with inclusive urbanisation using Doughnut Economics as the theoretical framework. Players take on the role of either a Developer, Environmentalist or Entrepreneur to complete a gameboard (i.e. masterplan). The result is submitted to the Cityzen Hub, a purpose-built website which saves the games, shows summaries, and enables in-depth analysis. In doing so, the participatory design process is reformulated into an interactive and engaging experience for the participants whilst providing meaningul data to the developers to help shape the future of the Northern Gateway.
