Q & A ❘ Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS Choke in horses: treatment, cause and symptoms to look out for
Choke – what to do
C
By Paula Broadhurst
hoke is not an uncommon occurrence in horses and it can be very distressing for both the horse and the owner when in does develop. Horses choke when food gets stuck in the oesophagus – which is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It is not normally due to something being stuck in the trachea – which is the wind pipe through which the horse breathes. There are a number of causes for choke, these include; horses swallowing whole large pieces of carrots or apples, eating un-soaked sugar beet, horses with poor teeth that are not able to chew their food normally, excited or greedy horses that swallow without chewing properly, horses post exercise that have a dry oesophagus and choke if given a hay net and very rarely, it can be due to tumours or strictures in the oesophagus. The clinical signs the horse will show can vary widely. Some horses will be very calm and show only mild drooling and neck spasms and may continue to try and eat. Others
will get very distressed and show signs of coughing, gagging, grunting, sweating and may make frantic neck stretching and arching movements, drool containing saliva and feed may also be visible from the mouth and nostrils. Depending on the level of the choke, it is possible that you may sometimes be able to palpate the lump of feed down the neck. The important thing to remember is not to panic. Most horses actually relieve the obstruction on their own within an hour. Move your horse to a stable without food, water or edible bedding and give them time for the condition to resolve. It might be worth ringing your vet to warn them that you might need a call if the situation doesn’t improve. If the horse calms down and the nasal discharge reduces, this usually means that the horse has recovered. You can then offer a very small amount of soft wet feed to test if the horse can swallow normally. If the horse is still showing signs of choke after an hour you should call your vet and request a visit. There are a number of ways your vet might treat your horses choke and this will vary according to the type of feed involved, the duration of the choke and how your horse is behaving. Sometimes, just giving some sedation and muscle relaxants
are enough for the horse to relax and release the choke. If this does not work then a stomach tube might be passed to try and push the feed down. Occasionally, under heavy sedation and with the horses head hanging very low, warm water will be flushed through the stomach tube to wash the feed out of the horses’ nose and clear the obstruction. It is rare that horses will be required to come into the hospital and have a general anaesthetic to be able to clear the blockage. Depending on the severity and duration of the choke, some horses might require anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to prevent pneumonia from accidental aspiration of the saliva and feed. Your horse should be left with water only and not be fed for a duration of time recommended by your vet (this could be up to 12 to 24 hours). The horse may then be fed small quantities of soft wet feed or grass and gradually returned to a normal diet (depending on the advice of your own veterinarian). In addition it may be wise to check the teeth or a particular cause has been identified then this should be treated and managed appropriately. NM

All the Gear and Some Idea ❘ By Rachel Dorrell
Happy New Year all! Rachel Dorrell owner and blogger of “All the gear and some idea” – With 2016 already upon us, Rachel is wondering where 2015 went!
I
Tour at Hickstead to name but a few. Miltown Star and I have grown in confidence jumping BS with the help of Carl Belson, along with introducing cross country again with Jonathan Cook after our accident in 2013. I have to admit though, DaintyDavey has been the true star. Taking it all in his stride, we have achieved champion and reserve champion sashes & rosettes at the RoR South East Show, GBEC Dressage league and Sunshine Tour at Hickstead in both show jumping and dressage, along with 5th place at the Horse Trials L&SE Championships for Bookham RC. I have also just received fantastic news that DaintyDavey has won the South East Regional section of the newly rolled out National RoR League for 2015. With the ever increasing all weather venues and numerous events on offer every single month, I look to the season ahead with a grit & determination to make this year as good, if not better than the last! I dream of a day when Dave & I could look to qualify for the Badminton Grassroots competition, this is a major goal of mine which I will hopefully spend the next few years working towards achieving. I hope to represent RMA Sandhurst again at some of the Inter Hunt Relays with Bob and look to step up to Newcomers with Noah. My diary for 2016 is already jam packed, lots of training planned, camps, drag hunting & competitions. I’m lucky to have three horses, all excelling in different disciplines. I plan their holidays around mine and allow extended rests after highly strenuous events. We have already qualified
makes for a fantastic weekend away. Loads to look forward too. I have to say though, my At Bookham camp with my sharer Bethany, Noah & Dave support network have had a massive part to play in all that I have achieved so far. From my partner who doesn’t grumble that I spend so much time at the yard, to my friends in the riding club and my instructors. If you are not part of a club, be it riding or pony club, I strongly recommend it. Being part of Bookham RC has made me some fantastic friends, opened numerous doors to compete and allowed me to give something back to the sport I love by being part of its committee for the last few years. To find out more of what Bookham RC has to offer you can visit their website www. bookhamridingclub.org.uk or follow their page on facebook. Feel free to message me through my Facebook page too with any questions. I’d like to wish you all a happy and healthy 2016! NM

Cyden Dressage ❘ Home to Lara Edwards Here, Lara Edwards answers questions about the breeding programme at Cyden Dressage, what enlightened her passion for breeding and her hopes for the future
Q & A with Lara Edwards What started your passion for breeding? I have always been interested in the sire and mare of any horse, even when I was an eventer I would always look at the breeding in the catalogue. Fifteen years ago, as a family, we bred three eventers ourselves from my brother’s mare that he took through the levels up to advanced and they all went on to be successful as event horses. Due to her breeding she was quite heavy so wasn’t able to make the time as an event horse, so we made the decision to use her as a broodmare. We used, Primitive Rising, Criminal Law, and Mayhill, all top quality event sires. What do you think makes a good stallion? A good stallion for me has two sides – the breeding/ grading and the temperament or trainability. Firstly when considering the breeding, is the stallion a graded stallion and if so, with whom is the stallion graded? Also, has the stallion you have chosen got good breeding itself on both sides and is this the type of horse you are looking to breed yourself? Temperament and trainability are vital. Have you seen the stallion yourself and witnessed his temperament in and out of his stable, and spoken to anyone who has used the stallion to see what traits, good or bad, he may be passing on? Also linked in with this is the trainability of the stallion – is he himself ridden and out competing? Does he appear to have moved up the levels with good scores, and have
08 ❘ NagMag
February 2016
his offspring been trainable and are they out doing well? What do you like about the KWPN breed? For me the KWPN breed represents the tough grading and testing that the stallion has had to go through in order to gain the KWPN status. Stallions can be graded with different organisations – some in as little as two hours, however for me the 30 day or 90 day test that’s required as a KWPN-approved stallion represents they have been thoroughly examined and are fit to be a breeding stallion. How did you come across your own stallions, Bodyguard, Amigo and Cadans M? I saw Cadans when I went over to Holland to look for a four, five or 6-year-old gelding. There were many that I had tried and liked but there wasn’t one that really stood out. I asked about Cadans and the gentleman said he is a 5-year-old KWPN-approved stallion by Sir Donnerhall. I had never dealt with or ridden a stallion in my life and was concerned he would be way out of my budget, but the gentleman said “Just have a sit on him and at least you can say you have ridden a stallion next time you are asked.” That was a sit I wouldn’t forget, although he was very green and a bit on edge, he had power like I had never felt riding anything before. I returned to the UK with a video to show my Dad and two weeks later Cadans joined the yard.

Six months later, the owner of Cadans asked if I would be interested in taking on another stallion for a few months training and to then sell, so Bodyguard joined the yard. I really didn’t think much to him to start with as he was very tight in his neck and over his back but within eight weeks I was in love with him. He is the most trainable horse I have ever sat on. He has a very kind nature – not stallion-like when at home at all, in fact within a few weeks he started his life living out in the field over the summer months and still does.
Cyden Cleo
I fell in love with Amigo during a trip to Holland to look for a pony for my nieces and nephew. At only three years old and very weak-looking, he was black with four white socks and a white face and the most adorable character. I went into his stable and he came over and licked me! It did take me a few weeks to persuade my brother that a 3-year-old, NWPCS-approved pony stallion was just what he wanted for his children to ride! Needless to say, we did end up with a couple of other pony geldings as well. Tell us about Cyden Dressage’s Breeding programme? We currently have four broodmares, De Niro, DiMaggio, Donnerhall, Pik Bube, with the intention being on quality and not quantity. Along with our own stallions we are also working with my Dutch contact to keep variation and then allow the fillies that we produce to not all have similar lines. Ideally we will keep one each year and I will train them up to Medium/Advanced Medium level before
selling them on and the others we will either sell as foals or produce them for four–year–old classes and then put them up for sale. Tell us about your current youngstock? Currently we have our three year olds starting their education under Guy Robertson’s watchful eye and then they will come back to me later in the year ready for the Young Horse classes in 2017. These are two Cadans fillies, Cleo and Channel and one Rhodium x De Niro filly, Chance. What are your thoughts on British breeding? I would like to be able to encourage and develop British breeding, as it is not always easy to find quality in the UK, hence why people go looking abroad. I hope having brought three quality Dutch stallions into the UK, British mare owners would see this as an alternative to having to ship in semen. Cyden Bodyguard Moorland will be standing at Stallion AI Services for a limited period in April and June for fresh and chilled semen. Frozen semen is available all year round from Cyden Bodyguard Moorland, Cyden Oostings Amigo and Cyden Cadans M. NM

Paddock Maintenance In this issue the team at Equestrian.com provide advice on ensuring your paddocks are safe for turnout especially with spring around the corner
Ensuring your Paddock is Safe for Turnout
T
he long winter is finally behind us and the joys of spring are certainly a welcome arrival. Horses that have been cooped up for longer periods of time will now be able to be turned out more and enjoy the freedom and grass. Those who have wintered out may be moving to fresh pasture, leaving their current field to rest and re-grow. The changes in routine that are likely to occur in the spring involve turnout and it is important to ensure that your paddock is safe and well equipped for your horse or pony. In this feature we look at the key points to watch out for and how to achieve a pleasant environment for your equine friend. First, check all of the fencing and ensure that any damaged sections are fixed appropriately. The gate should be able to swing freely and be in good condition. If electric fencing is used, ensure that the
10 ❘ NagMag
February 2016
battery is charged and all elements of the electric kit, such as the energiser, are in good working order. Paddocks should be securely locked with a chain and padlock. There are many different types available but try and get one that is robust and more difficult to cut. Don’t forget to put one around the hinged end of the gate or even better reverse the hinges to prevent the gate being taken off the hinges. Assess gateways and if they tend to get churned up consider putting some woodchip, stones or rubber down to reduce the impact and the mud that is created here. This may also be worth doing around water troughs and in front of field shelters. Make sure the water supply is in good working order and not leaking.
Troughs should be cleaned regularly to prevent dirt and algae build up. Check the paddock thoroughly for any unwanted objects or weeds that need to be removed. Weed control is important and any poisonous plants such as ragwort should be dug up by the roots and burned. The spring is an ideal time to apply fertiliser to the land to promote good growth, Ideally, this should be done after topping which will also help the grass to grow, Depending on the type of fertiliser used, horses may have to be kept of the land for a few weeks so be sure to plan in advance and check the packaging. Paddock maintenance is an all-year round job and regular poo picking is especially important. Make sure you have a safe and secure paddock and let your horse enjoy the start of spring. NM

The Cranleigh RDA Sponsored Ride 2016
Offering a sense of pleasure and achievement
H
orse riders know the joy and value of riding and of contact with horses. Cranleigh Riding for the
Disabled brings this experience to over 230 children and adults with special needs, offering them physical therapy as well as an element of freedom, pleasure and confidence and a sense of real achievement. Riding offers a degree of independence that many disabled people cannot have in their daily life. There are also medical advantages – the warmth and three dimensional movement of the horse is transmitted through the rider’s body, gradually making it more relaxed and supple, reducing spasticity and improving balance, posture and co-ordination. The movement of the pelvis influences the lumbar region and is transferred up the spine thus encouraging control of the trunk and head. Riding a horse makes mobility possible. From the elevated position on its back, riders have an opportunity to see more than would otherwise be possible for them. The experience the riders gain through the contact they have with the ponies also helps to create a great sense of achievement and confidence and this in turn, makes their lives easier and more fulfilled. Cranleigh RDA operate fourteen different sessions each week with riders coming from eight Special Schools and four Adult Centres as well as many others who come independently. Apart from their normal weekly rides, their riders have

the opportunity to do dressage at Hickstead and take part in Regional Challenge days and they know that riding greatly enhances their quality of life by expanding their capabilities and offering challenges they can achieve. Entirely self supporting, the
participation of many able bodied riders is key to the Ride’s success. Please do join in on Good Friday 25 March 2016 to help this excellent cause. Rain or shine, all who take part will have the satisfaction of knowing that they will be making a

Spring Horse Care Spring is here and hopefully the longer days are providing more time to spend with your horse or pony. Here, the team at Equestrian.com provide advice on horse care for the spring
Spring Time Horse Care – from Stable to Field
H
orse owners will be very pleased to see the start of spring looming and the more pleasant weather and lighter days that it brings with it. The winter is always a challenging time for equestrian care and the endless mud, lack of grass and cold temperatures often mean that horses will be stabled for much longer periods of time. Spring provides fresh grass growth and hopefully less rain, meaning that horses will start to enjoy relaxing in their fields again and feel revitalised by the new season.
holed haynet or in a net within a net to prolong feeding time. Although the spring should bring the start of more pleasant weather, it is still the British climate, which as we all know can be very unpredictable. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a light weight turnout rug for your horse to protect him from showers, whilst preventing him getting too warm. When the flies start to become a problem ensure your horse is suitably protected with a fly rug and mask.
This change in routine means that extra care must be taken to ensure the transition between winter and spring care is smooth and problem-free in terms of health and temperament. If you are turning your horse out in a field that he hasn’t been in for some time, take care that he does not become over excited. Exercising him beforehand is often a good idea to reduce some of his energy. If your horse is very strong in hand, putting him in a control head collar may help and always wear a hard hat when turning horses out. Spring grass is usually rich and high in sugar so if you have a pony or horse that is prone to laminitis make sure you fence a smaller area off for him to restrict his grazing. Ponies - and some horses - can get excitable on spring grass so make sure you monitor them accordingly to ensure they do not overeat and show unwanted behaviour. Ensure that your horse continues to receive a balanced diet when he is turned out. For those that are good-doers a low calorie feed balancer is an ideal way to ensure your horse gets all the nutrients he needs without gaining excess weight. Some horses get more lethargic when turned out for longer periods, so they may benefit from slow release energy products. If you are planning to change your horses feed for a less conditioning option as they move into spring and summer, be sure to introduce the new feed gradually and mix it in with their current feed to start with. If reducing hay or haylage, it may be a good idea to put it in a smaller
With your horse being out more, spring is the ideal time to give your stables and yard a spring clean. To thoroughly clean your stable, remove any rubber matting and use a pressure washer together with a good disinfectant to wash down the floor and walls. Any matting can then be cleaned as well before laying it back down. The start of spring marks a great time for horse owners and the drawing out of the days allows more riding. Enjoy the spring and look forward to a fun filled season ahead. NM

London’s New Year’s Day Parade 2016 64 horses took part in this year’s parade, with a total number of participates of just over 200 people, ranging in age from 2 – 71 years
All The Queen’s Horses
T
WORDS : Karen Brett-McGee
he youngest riders were Megan Jones aged
six who travelled all the way from Anglesey with her family and Darcy Pritchard aged seven who travelled from Stoke with her sisters and parents on New Year’s Eve to stay near Brighton to meet ponies that she had never ridden before. The Pritchard’s loan ponies came from a racing yard near Brighton and were escorted to London by the lovely Eliza Poulton and Sam Daniels. Sam was so pleased to be making these little girls dreams come true nothing got in his way even when the pony bit him; trod on his toe and broke it to even painting his face orange to be an Umpa Lumpa. Other participants came from all over the UK with many travelling part way the day before with their horses/ ponies. Our team arrived from 7.30am to park along the pavements of Piccadilly, logistically this could have been
a nightmare but the strong ground team calmed any nerves and quickly got everyone organised. Riders and walkers took the opportunity to meet others and even take photos with the doorman of the Ritz as we were parked just outside. One team even managed to get themselves a police escort when they got lost which was most impressive to see! Preparation for any show is never easy but with global visitors trying to take selfies with our horses whilst acclimatizing them to the weirdest atmosphere facing stilt walkers with wings, 50 Harley Davidson motorcyclist, giant balloons Unicorns & characters, samba bands, steel bands and vehicles & animals covered in fake grass was never going to be easy. Our group showed truly grit and with copious amounts of glitter and with all hands on deck they did us proud.

moment to watch. The theme this year was 30 Magical Years and All The Queens Horses pulled out all the stops with no expense spared on costumes and creativity. Some of the costs to our riders particularly those living furthest away topped £1000 for the costume and running costs for the whole experience which are amazing. The horse element of the Parade is organised by Caroline Marsh of UK Rosettes. NM

So many breeds of horses were represented too – Spanish, American Quarter horses, Haflinger, Norwegian Fjord, Holsteins, Warm bloods, Traditional Cobs, Thoroughbreds, Appaloosas, Irish Sport Horses, Welsh section A, Pure Arabs & British Miniatures aged between four years and 23 years some retired professionals and some rescues. Some of the team are professional competitors in all the variety of equestrian activities and some are happy hackers but nothing could prepare them for the 500,000 people wanting to meet them in the crowds. They were all so brilliant stopping along the way at some of London’s most iconic landmarks to allow the crowd to stroke them and ask questions. It is hard to imagine that most of these horses/ponies rarely visit such crowded streets let alone walk between 250 watt speakers of blaring music and having commentators get the crowds to cheer and chant! The crowds completely loved the horses and some of our fantastic unsung heroes – the walkers lead horses into the deep crowds for people to meet them, even lift children from the crowd over the barriers to get closer, it was a real team effort and seeing the delight on the crowd and children’s face was definitely a highlight that none will forget! At the Cenotaph all the teams stopped in a line and bowed their heads as a mark of respect to all the fallen horses and soldiers which was definitely a very moving

The Award is kindly sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Loriners as part of their continuing celebrations of their 750th anniversary in 2012 of their grant of Ordinance. The London Harness Horse Parade has been a popular Easter spectacle for 130 years, and ten years ago moved from its central London location to the spacious, purposebuilt South of England Centre in Ardingly, Sussex RH17 6TL with free parking and easier access. The Parade has since been expanded to include a display of the earliest motor cars to enhance the spectacle of how transport developed over the ages. In addition to the 100 plus horse drawn vehicles the Parade will include vintage tractors, historic and classic cars, allowing spectators to experience the progression from horse drawn transport to mechanically propelled vehicles. This annual Easter event is excellent value for a family costing just £7 per adult with children and parking free. The gates open at 8.30 am for spectators to watch the exhibits being prepared, admire the historic and classic vehicles in attendance and visit the trade stands to do some Easter shopping as well as enjoy refreshments. Inaugural Competition Stallions Awards Winners of the Competition Stallions Awards – presented at the British Stallion Event on 9th January, 2016

he inaugural Competition Stallions Awards were presented at The British Stallion Event on 9th January to the top sires of progeny assessed by the British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity Evaluations 2015. The awards are the brainchild of Jane Skepper, Director of the Competition Stallions Guide. “We felt it was now the time to start developing an Award Scheme for British based stallions to continue to help promote high quality stallions standing in the UK”, said Jane. “We wanted to start this year with Awards for the Leading Sires of Futurity presented in 2015, but we look forward to developing these awards up through the ranks into leading Sires of

competing stallions in the various disciplines in future years”, she added. The Awards will take place annually, based on the results of progeny presented at the British Breeding/BEF Futurity Evaluations in the single year. “This should result in stallions that are actively having progeny presented and getting good results having a chance of winning, and the criteria for the Awards have been developed to represent this”, said Jane. To be eligible for an award the stallion must be based in the UK and must have had at least five progeny forward at the Futurity Evaluations in the year. The highest average score determines the winner and awards are made in each discipline: Dressage, Endurance, Eventing, Show Jumping & Sports Pony as well as an innovative Newcomer’s award. The Dressage Competition Stallion Award went to Woodlander Wild Child, who is currently training in Germany and was represented by his sire, Woodlander Wavavoom. Wild Child, out of the world champion 5 and 6 year-old, Woodlander Farouche, is himself a graduate of the Futurity, achieving an Elite score as a foal and top dressage 2 year-old. Owner and breeder, Lynne Crowden, said “We have had the rankings for years, and it is wonderful now to get these stallions recognised”. The Eventing Stallion Award went to Future Gravitas, by the successful eventing stallion, Grafenstoltz, out of the proven performance producer, Justwith Genoa, making Future Gravitas a half brother to Olympic silver medallist and WEG gold medallist, Winsome Adante. A Futurity graduate, Future Gravitas was the top ranked of all the eventing stallions, as well as being the top UK based eventing sire. Julia Hodkin of Future Sport Horses, paid tribute to the mare owners for giving young stallions a chance. “It is time for breeders to choose British stallions because they are as good or better than you can find abroad”, she said. To ensure that young stallions are not overlooked, there is also an Award for the leading Newcomer. To

Inaugural Competition Stallions Awards be eligible, stallions must have between three and five progeny forward across all disciplines in the year, and must not have had more than five progeny presented in total over a number of years in the Futurity Evaluations. The Newcomers award went jointly to Elite Stallions’ Balou Star and Catherston Stud’s Timolin. The young show jumping stallion, Balou Star, produced the top show jumping yearling in 2015 and demonstrated that as a competition horse, he is a little powerhouse. The Pony Stallion award went to Penny Walster’s dressage pony, Bathleyhills Monet. An Elite graduate of the Futurity himself, he is now producing high scoring foals and yearlings as well as competing in dressage. His partbred arab and part welsh bloodlines carry the cream gene, so he can produce palomino progeny. “I am delighted with
recent Liverpool International Show, took individual and team bronze at the Young Rider Europeans in 2015, and is regularly winning at 1.45m level. “He is coming into his own now and will be stepping up this year. He is perfect to handle, and has such a good temperament”, said Millie’s father, Peter Allen. The Totilas sired Timolin demonstrated his impressive paces shown in hand for the presentation, and his impeccable temperament as people crowded his box to view the 5 year-old stallion. “He has a super temperament. I can ride out in the fields at home, and he is lovely to train. He has a fantastic canter to sit on. It is lovely that young stallions with foals coming through can be recognised”, said Lizzie Murray. “We feel it is very important that Sports Pony stallions
the award”, said Penny. “He got an Elite score and highest yearling in the Futurity, and the SPSS Certificate of Merit for the leading pony sire as a 3 year-old. He is super athletic and really trainable, but he can be left for a month and we just pick him up again”, said Penny. All of the stallions were present or had progeny or sire present to receive their awards and the audience were appreciative of the demonstrations by these award-winning sires. Competition Stallions has now produced its 5th Edition of the Guide for Graded & Approved Competition Stallions.
