The Next Generation T he sport of eventing is constantly evolving and never at a speed faster than
in the last 5 years. Who knows what the next 5 years will bring and what will be required to achieve success in the years to come? This is the inspiration behind the 2017 International Eventing Forum, which has been themed ‘The Next Generation’. The International Eventing Forum is a highly successful full day of interactive training demonstrations which takes place annually at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire and the organisers have just announced the line-up of speakers for IEF 2017. Now a ‘must attend’ event for eventing competitors and trainers of all levels of ability and ambition, the International Eventing Forum has a well-earned reputation of presenting some of the sports’ most influential riders, trainers and competitors. Previous presenters have including legends such as Lucinda Green, Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson, David O’Connor, Jimmy Wofford and Chris Bartle, to name but a few, and the line-up for 2017 looks set to be equally as impressive. During the morning sessions, attendees will get to enjoy and learn from two ladies who excel in training for top performance: Tracie Robinson - dressage trainer for Equestrian Team GBR and Caroline Moore – FBHS and BE u18 and Junior Team Coach. Attendees will then get insights into how three top class eventing grooms - Alex van Tuyll, Imo Mercer and Zanie King work to keep horses fit, sound and at peak performance, when it’s needed most. The feature afternoon session will be led by Badminton’s new course designer - Eric Winter – and will
explore and discuss next generation cross country. He will be ably supported by Christopher Burton and Sam Griffiths (members of Australia’s Bronze medal winning team in Rio), who will share their training techniques for their next generation medal horses. So if you want to get your 2017 eventing season off on the best foot possible, put the 6th of February 2017 in your diary today. As always, the location will be Hartpury College and tickets will be on sale soon! NM

Nick duly put the horse through his paces and found him to be outstanding, with a spectacular jump. However, he was very expensive and Nick really wanted a more experienced horse, ready to go into top competition, rather than a long-term project, so he tried to put the Widdowsons off buying him. Alan Waldman felt that Big Star was the best horse he had ever had, so he wanted him to go to one of the top riders in the world who could showcase him. Albert Widdowson was particularly taken with Big Star. After four

believe I’ve just seen a 5-yearold Shutterfly and, unbelievably, he’s a stallion too!” These were the words of Laura Kraut, the American international show jumper, on the phone from Holland to Norfolk businessman and exshow jumper Gary Widdowson. “Come and try him; the breeder may sell him.” The following day Gary, his father Albert along with Nick Skelton flew to Holland to meet with Alan Waldman, the American breeder. The horse in question was Big Star, a 16.3hh bay with black points by Quick Star out of a mare called Jolanda by Nimmerdor, combining the best of Dutch Warmblood and Selle Francais stock.
Gold Olympic Medallist Nick Skelton and Big Star hours of haggling Albert and Gary managed to clinch the deal, putting up the money between them as a partnership. And for good measure they also bought Nick a more experienced horse! Big Star’s first outing as a 5-year-old in 2008 was to the BSJA Scope Festival of Show Jumping, partnered by Amanda Derbyshire, the stable jockey, as Nick was at that time representing Great Britain at the Seoul Olympics. This combination was placed joint first in two 5-year-old Championships, jumping double

clear, not against the clock, in each. Arriving back from Hong Kong and not having seen the horse since he tried him out in Holland, Nick wanted to take over the ride on Big Star immediately. “He’s an even better horse than I thought he was!” Nick said. “He jumps like a stallion but rides like a pony. I can do things with him!” Big Star then went to Spain on the Sunshine Tour where, ridden by Michael Jones, Nick’s younger brother, he left all the jumps standing. Competing in Hickstead’s International Arena in 2008, Big Star was absolutely unfazed. He went on to exceed all expectations and win the 6-year-old Championships at Weston Lawns, the Scope Festival and the Horse of the Year Show. At the latter, where he beat Laura Renwick and Parvati de Breve by less than half a

Gold Olympic Medallist Nick Skelton and Big Star second, Nick was asked why he had gone so fast on this young horse. “Cos I can!” was his response. “He’s a strong horse, but not difficult,” said Nick. “He’s got everything, there’s nothing negative about him. I can’t find fault with him at all. There’s not a wrong thing in his head. At home we keep him fresh

and regularly exercised. He gets no special attention and everyone on the yard mucks in to look after him along with the other horses. The plan is for him to get older and more experienced.” Gary placed his horses with Nick because he believed he is the best producer of good horses and brings them along slowly and carefully. “Nick will never rush a young horse,” said Gary. “In fact he’s paranoid about doing it properly!
So, is it any wonder that this partnership has gone on to be part of the team that clinched gold at the 2012 London Olympics and has now taken the Individual Gold medal for showjumping at the 2016 Olympics in Rio? Nick is the first rider to win an individual gold Olympic medal in equestrian sports and, aged 58, is the oldest British gold medallist since 1908. He’s got everything, there’s nothing negative about him. I can’t find fault with him at all Widdowson’s Big Star posted an unbeatable clear round in 42.82 seconds. “I have been in this sport a long, long time,” said Nick, “and to win this now at my age I’m so happy, it’s just amazing! It’s nice to be the oldest one! I’ve always wanted to do this and I nearly did it in London in the Individual. I’ve had European and World medals but to win this and to get this horse here is pretty emotional for all concerned in my team.” And so say all of us! NM

All the Gear and Some Idea ❘ By Rachel Dorrell
“A Fantastic Performance...” Rachel attended the Championships at Warwickshire and Liverpool and then back down south again to the Edenbridge & Oxted Show
W
ow, the weeks have flown by and Dave and I have been travelling the country attending both the British Show Jumping
Championships at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire and the RoR National Championships at Aintree, Liverpool. My foot and leg are still pretty swollen but I was ok enough to ride so arrived and settled in on the show ground ready for our classes over the Friday & Saturday. First up, the 70cm Club League championship and Dave stormed round clear and into the second round. He put in a fantastic performance to jump clear in the jump off in the quickest time to take the win! I was absolutely thrilled and it was great to the have the South East league sponsor Fiona Rafferty of Local Rider there to cheer me on. The 80cm was up next but unfortunately we had a pole so ended up placed 8th. Saturday saw me compete against all ex racehorses for the RoR Club League Championship. It started at 85cm and Dave pinged round for a lovely clear. Four of us went
forward to the jump off and after one pair really went for it, I knew we had to pull out all the stops and make the tight turns to beat the time. He didn’t disappoint and with a jump off of up to 95cm, he jumped a fantastic clear to take the lead and win the class. It really is a fantastic venue and well worth joining the Club membership through British Show Jumping. Pippa, the SE RoR coordinator put on a fabulous RoR show jumping teams competition at Pachesham on Sat 20th August, we could only make it for one class but Dave was on top form and won the RoR section and was also part of the winning RoR team. Wednesday 24th August saw myself and Rebecca Wilman head off to Aintree for the RoR National Championships. The show was held at the equestrian centre which is based in the grounds of the world famous Aintree Racecourse! Such a special backdrop and beautiful venue. We were stabled in the racecourse stables and able to walk along the front of the grandstands next to the course. We came 3rd in the Intro on day 1 and had a phenomenal day 2 winning the 80cm regional class, 85cm RoR Club league class and 2nd in the 90cm, less than a second behind the winner. Dave is just a dream to jump! We headed home on the Saturday and Sunday I took Buckaroo Bob to the Inter Hunt Relay run by RMA Sandhurst. A really brilliant event, this is the first time I have attended Wellington Horse Trials and the first year my

Then to top off a great week, Dave and I headed to Edenbridge & Oxted Show for our first RoR Challenge Class and were placed 4th after jumping clear. I am so chuffed, he really does try his heart out and love his jumping! Dave has had a well deserved two weeks off. Bob and I competed at Wheatlands hunter trial last weekend and then today Dave and I attended the SE RoR Show at

Pachesham. We competed in the Prelim Championships and were pleased to be placed 5th with 65.35%. Having never even practiced a Novice test before, we gave it a go and I am over the moon to have received 61% and 5th place, not bad for our first attempt which included me being slightly inaccurate and going wrong at one point! He then stormed round the 80cm & 90cm to win both championship classes. We headed home with gorgeous rosettes, lovely comments from the judge and a load of wonderful prizes! PS. I went to A&E a few weeks ago and my foot is actually fractured in three places! NM

ot in my wildest dreams did I think I’d lead from start to finish!” said Aussie Chris Burton at the end of this year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. “When I walked the course up Winners’ Avenue I thought how wonderful it would be to have your name on a plaque there!” Having posted the best dressage score of 30.2 riding the 11-year-old German bred Nobilis 18, 34-year-old Burto, who is based at Dunsfold in Surrey, was not full of confidence. “It’s always exciting to see a good score,” he said, “but you never know. Burghley is always nerve-wracking for me and I’m not excited at the prospect of the cross-country phase!” Despite the atrocious weather conditions on Saturday and being one of the last to go, Burto completed the course with a smile on his face, only incurring 3.2 time penalties and remaining at the top of the leader board. “I felt very nervous,” he admitted, “and as I watched other riders go I thought I might go back to bed for the afternoon! I always aim to have a seamless ride and it turned out to be easy. I had a rare moment and changed my mind at the Trout Hatchery, doing the short route instead of the long.”

Course designer Mark Phillips commented, “The number of falls was disappointing. Three in a row fell over in the Trout Hatchery, including Pippa Funnell on Second Supreme! Discovery Valley was harder work for the riders than I thought it would be and the rain didn’t help. But out of 68 starters, 28 jumped round clear.” Only five of the 38 horses and riders in the

Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2016 showjumping arena managed to leave all the poles up. According to Richard Jefferies, the course designer, as the cross-country courses become more technical, showjumping has to stay with it. “Last night the ground was very wet, sticky and holding,” he said. “After the first three horses had gone the time allowed was decreased. I pulled the spreads in as I didn’t want the horses slipping. The footing is very important as the arena is not flat. I have to find the right spots for the fences.”

“That wasn’t the best showjumping performance!” said Harry Dzenis from Billingshurst who managed to rack up 36 show jumping penalties on Xam! “I’m a bit disappointed but he’s still a 4* horse. He went like a dream yesterday, so I’m not going to beat myself up!” “Star Witness was getting a bit keen towards the end of his showjumping round,” said Findon’s Tina Cook who finished in 10th place. “He’s got a light mouth and just rubbed the gate for four faults. The Trout Hatchery cost us a few seconds yesterday where he lost a shoe and I nearly fell off! I don’t like falling off so I managed to hang on for grim death! The rest of the round felt perfect but I felt him slip on the corners after that.” Despite having four show jumps down, Chris Burton stayed in pole position to claim the top prize with Kiwi Andrew Nicholson close behind on Nereo, the third time

this pair have finished in second place. “I tried to keep it interesting for everyone by taking it so close!” quipped Burto. “This is very special - I have learned to enjoy these moments.” Two-time winner Lucinda Green summed up the competition: “This was a really, really tough course! It always rides more difficult than it walks. Burghley is a real brute - you’ve got to have guts to do it!” NM

Borde Hill Horse Trials ❘ By Abigail Johnson Junior rider Abigail Johnson’s writes about her first time at Borde Hill and the memories of the wonderful time she had.
“M
“5,4,3,2,1 go!” um, can I do Borde Hill? I’ll pay.” that was the question I asked my mum
already. A man directed us into a space to park in and we got out to collect my number but left Oscar in the trailer with my brother as I still had about an hour or so before my dressage time. As we headed to the secretaries tent I looked at the show jumping course, it was a nice course a part from number 6 and 7 were downhill which meant that Oscar might get a bit flat and knock a pole, but I wasn’t worried about that quite then as I was trying to remember my dressage test. We collected my number and headed back to the trailer to get Oscar out and tacked up, luckily my friend Franny had arrived with her mum to give us a hand so they got Oscar ready while I put on my boots, hat and show jacket, along with my gloves and spurs. When we were both ready I jumped on and we walked up to the dressage.

sometime in July. I had saved some Christmas money because I wanted to do Firle in August but instead I saw Borde Hill were running an event. I had always wanted to compete there as I had watched their horse trials last year and this year in May, and it was such a lovely place with an amazing cross country course. The day before I had to plait my horse Oscar up, I made sure to sew them so they stayed in. On the day, I arrived to the yard with my mum and brother and got Oscar out of his stable, relieved that his plaits were still in. I gave him a quick brush before putting his travel boots, tail bandage and tail guard on to make sure he didn’t rub his tail off or bash his legs in the trailer. While I was doing this my mum and brother had packed the car for me so we were ready to go. Oscar loaded onto the trailer with
no problems and we were away. We had soon arrived and the lorry park was full of boxes, horses and people

The dressage warm up wasn’t properly marked out and the only bits marked off were the dressage arenas and the cross country so it gave me a lot of space to warm him up and get him nicely moving. Soon it was time for my dressage, I had watched two go round already to remember my test and I was ready to go. At the top of the arena I did a few trot and walk circles before practising my transitions to make sure he was definitely

listening, then the car horn beeped and I trotted down the centre line. In the test there was a free walk, a few trot circles and some canter circles, which he aced. I was so proud of our dressage even though I thought I circles were a little small which was a rider error, it turned out we got 35.5, which is was our second best dressage score ever. We headed back to the trailer and I got changed into my show jumping jacket and put Oscar’s boots and breast plate on. I then headed up to the jumping warm up and I had lots of time so I watched some to remember the course then I got him warmed up then watched a few more before it was my turn. We trotted into the ring and I managed to trot him past the scary fillers before starting, jump number one was going uphill and it was a spread so it got him jumping nicely to start with, number 4 was a double which he had a rub of the first element but it didn’t fall, although he tapped the back rail of number 5 and unfortunately it came down. He did numbers 6,7 and 8 perfect though and we came out with 4 jumping penalties and none for time. Then it was back to the trailer for a complete change into my cross country colour and Oscar into his blue nummnah from his white one. We also put his boots on as well as some red and blue tape so they didn’t fall down when I was going round, then we greased his legs up as there were some big jumps on the course and he could sometimes be a bit lazy with his legs. I then walked to the cross country warm up and gave him one fast canter after warming him up. We then did a few warm up jumps and I was called to the start box. “5,4,3,2,1 go.” the man on the start said as we flew off into a fast canter. Jump number one was a decent sized brush fence that he flew over before heading up the hill to number 2 and 3. After we had jumped them, it was into a small wooded area to do number 4, a massive brush fence that measured to about 1m10 including the brush. It was defiantly my bogie fence but he flew it and off we went. He tried his heart out at everything until we
came to the water, he decided that playing in it was much more fun as we trotted in , he stopped dead in the middle and started pouring at it and trying to stick his nose in it. No matter how much I pony club kicked or hit him on the bum he wouldn’t move until I persuaded him to walk forwards slowly and he then cantered out the other side, leaving me a bit confused. We jumped the next few and then came the scary A, B, C element. It was a log, down to a ditch and then back up to a skinny with a bull painted on it. He didn’t like the bull so we had one stop and I had to turn him around and do the whole thing again and that time him jumped it ( with a lot of vocal encouragement ) there was then one double and a log left which he jumped perfectly and we were across the line in 5 minutes 10, bearing in mind that the optimum time was 4 minutes... I was so proud of him that I didn’t care and I was just so happy that we got round our first ever British Eventing course. Luckily when we got back to the trailer park there was a hose that we could use so I took off his saddle and breast plate while my mum washed him off and I caught my breath along with Oscar. Once we got back to the trailer we put on his sweat rug before sitting around for a bit so we could see the results and Oscar could have a break before we headed off home. Once we felt it was time to go, we took off his rug, put on his travel boot, tail bandage and tail guard before loading him and taking him home after a lovely day. Thank you Borde Hill for running such a lovely event. And thank you to my mum, my brother and Sarah and Franny for helping out with the day. NM

September’s Here Already
T
August was a busy and very rewarding month for Raife and his team. Check out what Spyder, Sienna and raife have been up to.
he most successful August for Team Tansey started with our first trip to Crofton Manor. Had a great day with Sienna, but Spyder was not himself. So the following week we had some Cold Laser Therapy with Dawn Stagg of Stagg Cold Laser Therapy for Animals. I took both horses to Felbridge, and the following weekend, what a change in Spyder’s performance. He went double clear in the Newcomers at a cracking pace and won the class, which was also a qualifier. As Spyder seemed to be feeling so much better, I took him to Coombelands the following Saturday and he came second in the Newcomers. Two placings in a week. Then at the beginning of September we had the Hickstead Official Jumping Show. Sienna did well each day, a few unlucky poles, but showing so much more confidence in the ring. Spyder was placed in the 1.10 open on the first day, was constant for the next couple of days, so on the last day I decided to take him in the 1.20. This was only our second time at that height, and Spyder is showing such potential. So this week I have some more training with Derrick McCoppin from Showjumping Vision, in preparation for taking Spyder to Arena UK next week. Sadly, there is only room for one of my horses on the lorry this time, so Sienna will have to remain at home and be looked after by my Mum. But Sienna has preformed very well this years so some time out will be good for her. I would like to thank Minkeys Tweed again this month for their support with entry fees. But also they have agreed to sponsor me through the Legupfortalent programme as well,
so big thank you to them. I also have two new exciting sponsors coming on board to support Team Tansey , and look forward to announcing them in next month’s blog. NM
