Q & A ❘ Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS Advice from Paula Broadhurst on how to choose a stallion for your mare

Which stallion you would like to use?

O

By Paula Broadhurst

nce you have decided that you are going to put your mare in foal the next most significant decision you will make is which stallion you would like to use. There are a number of factors that need to be considered in this process and once you start looking, you will realise how many different stallions are available. “You will need to consider what you are aiming to breed and what combination will suit your mare. If you are breeding for yourself are you hoping the offspring will compete

04 ❘ NagMag

April 2016

at eventing, showjumping, endurance, dressage or some other discipline? If you are breeding to sell what bloodline combinations will suit your mare and will attract potential buyers in the future. What market will you be aiming to sell into, if it is a local market will a locally wellknown stallion be more appropriate than one from far afield. Can you go and visit the stallion and assess his temperament and conformation yourself or with a knowledgeable friend? An advert or online video is always going to showoff a horses’ best point and avoid showing the negative features. Does the stallion perform as well ridden as he does loose schooled or in hand. How well known is the stud that is standing the stallion or sending out the semen? Stallions may be available for use via natural cover or via artificial insemination (AI). AI is the technique used to transfer semen

collected from a stallion, into the uterus of a mare in order to achieve a pregnancy. Using AI stallions from all over the UK and abroad could be potential candidates for you to choose from. The semen may be produced as either fresh, chilled or frozen and the contracts associated with the sale of each can vary between each stallion, stud or owner. The use of AI to put your mare in foal will require the services of a stud veterinarian to carefully manage your mares cycle, so she is covered at the right time and treated appropriately before and after covering, to maximise your chance of a successful pregnancy. Fresh semen is collected from the stallion and sometimes mixed with an extender (a special substance to protect the semen), before being transferred, usually within 8 hours, directly into a mare at the same property or very nearby. Chilled semen is collected from the stallion, processed and mixed with an extender before being chilled

Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS ❘

to 4ºC in a special container. The chilled semen can then be shipped in the post or via a courier to be used within 48 hours of collection. This does require careful veterinary management of your mare to ensure she is at exactly the right stage of her cycle when the semen is transferred into the uterus. This enables a stallion remote from your mare to be easily used as a sire. Frozen semen is usually produced during a quiet time in the stallions competition schedule. The semen is collected at a specialist AI centre and carefully processed before freezing in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196ºC. Provided the semen remains at this temperature it can last potentially forever. The fertility of the semen after freezing can be variable between stallions with some being as good as chilled or fresh, but others not so good. To use frozen semen

your mare needs to be very carefully managed by a stud veterinarian and the semen needs to be carefully handled and stored to avoid damage. In addition, the timing of placing the semen into the uterus and the mares ovulation (releasing the egg), needs to be very close. Then appropriate post insemination checks and treatments will also need to be made. Because of the management required the veterinary costs associated with putting your mare in foal with frozen semen may be more than using fresh or chilled semen. Once you have narrowed your stallion choices down, other considerations may be what is the stud fee of the stallion and what does this include? Are you paying per dose of semen or per pregnancy? If your mare doesn’t go in foal will you need to pay additional collection or transportation fees for covering your

Q&A

mare again? How many offspring does the stallion have and what pregnancy success rates has he been achieving? Does your stud vet know the stallions on your short list and do they have any opinion on your choices? Is there a live foal guarantee and what does this actually mean? If you have made the decision to breed from your mare make sure you carefully research your stallion choice so that it is the most suitable to your purpose. Make sure you clearly understand the contract and what it does and doesn’t include. If you are in any doubt get advice from your veterinarian as to the suitability of your stallion choice and to explain any points you are not sure on. NM

March for the pairs and individual classes. Clare Penfold has been an outstanding entry secretary from the start. Great communication and updated all competitors when needed. She was amenable and efficient, and secretaries like Claire are worth their weight in gold. I think unless you have volunteered yourself, and certainly run an event, you will never truly know how much work goes into running a horse show. A hunter trial probably requires the most amount of volunteers too! I was actually organised enough to walk the course with friends the day before, which I much prefer having not been to this venue before. The venue is gorgeous, and as we drove up the long drive to the grand house, you could just tell the undulating ground was going to be good old turf to gallop and jump over. The course provided an old school, traditional style hunter trial. Fence one was a nice brush although I knew that it could cause problems if not attacked confidently from the off. As I walked towards jump 8, I was confident with the fences so far, and then we met the corner. My nemeses fence in any course, very much a rider scarer for me. Luckily my XC schooling session with Jonathan Cook

on Thursday at Tweseldown happened just at the right time. We had practiced quite a few out on course so I knew how to look and plan my approach to this fence. The corner on course stood bigger than the advertised novice height so they had offered an alternative but I knew I had to face it. Luckily I knew that on the day I would had the opportunity to jump it with a lead in the pairs in the class before. The expected weather on the day didn’t provide the greatest of reports although it could have been worse. We were blown around in high winds but hugely thankful the rain held off until we were on our way home. I loved every minute of both rounds and we were thrilled to find out Catherine and I were placed 3rd in class 1 out of 47 pairs, picking up a qualification to the Horseware Hunter Trial Championships in October too. My individual round felt great, a slight wobble two strides out but I reacted quickly to ride confidently to the corner and ping it. Dave was still full of running although I rode a bit with the handbrake on which caused us to finish 6 seconds over the optimum time pushing us into 10th place out of 81! Claire, Lucy and their team of fabulous volunteers were brilliant throughout and provided us with numerous wonderful prizes upon our placings. Easter eggs, prize money, rosettes & horse treats! Huge thank you to them all and I will certainly be back for their next hunter trial. My next few events will be hunter trials as long as the weather holds up. Spring can’t come too soon. NM

advertising feature ❘ Angley Equine Services Angley Equine Services Ltd are proud to announce that the Activo-Med Aqua Treadmill is now installed and operational in our new premises at Angley Stud in Cranbrook, Kent

T

Aqua Therapy

he Aqua Treadmill offers the benefits of hydrotherapy for injury recovery and fitness. Horses work in their natural outline, without

a rider, at controlled speeds in walk and trot (as appropriate). The water is introduced gradually over a series of sessions up to a maximum of knee height. Angley Equine Services Ltd are very proud to be launching our new therapy unit. Based at Angley Stud in the picturesque surroundings of Cranbrook in Kent, also the home of international dressage rider and trainer David Rumsey. Together we bring together a wealth of experience in the equine industry and aim to provide a first class service to all equestrians in every discipline. The therapy unit will initially house our new ActivoMed Aqua Treadmill from Germany, of which there are fewer than 16 in the UK, but many more throughout the world. Dr Matthias Baumann, qualified FEI vet and Olympic 3-day event rider has worked with the aqua treadmill for over 17 years at his German veterinary and rehabilitation centre, and we are proud to have been given full training by him on the use and benefits of this equipment. Benefits include an increase in joint flexion and exaggerated use of back muscles. With no rider to influence the horse’s natural way of going the muscles develop symmetrically as the horse works in balance, in a

straight line and without interference. Concussive force is minimalised by the water so that muscles and tendons are strengthened safely. Standard prices start from £40 per 30 minute session. Savings can be made by purchasing six sessions up-front for £200 (saving £40). The Activo-Med Aqua Treadmill is the first of a range of rehabilitation treatments offered by Angley Equine Services including, rehabilitation livery, massage therapy rugs, Arc Equine, lunge pen, walker, indoor and outdoor arenas, all set in glorious surroundings. Contact us to discuss your specific horse’s needs. In addition to the aqua treadmill, we are also offering a bespoke rehabilitation livery service. This will be uniquely tailored to your individual requirements through working closely with your vet and/or therapist. We are also offering the use of our facilities at a very reasonable rate to individuals, vets and therapists, for vettings and injury assessment with the use of our lunge pen, walker, concrete track, canter track, indoor and outdoor arenas. Sunshine Tour 2016 ❘ Rider Profiles NagMag will be working with The Sunshine Tour over the next few months, and will bring you a monthly selection of riders who have qualified for the finals at Hickstead in September

The Long and Winding Road to… Hickstead

T Fleur Jarvis

he Sunshine Tour season is in full swing and riders and handlers have been taking part in dressage, show jumping, eventers challenges and showing all over England, Wales and Scotland. Excitement is already mounting about their trip to the UK’s

Fleur Jarvis with Knock Rocky Boy 70cm Show Jumping at Cobham Manor, Kent Fleur has owned 15hh, rising 6-year-old grey ‘Rocky’ for a year, they found each other at Martin’s Irish Horses and Fleur told us that it was love at first sight! “He was the first pony we saw and I fell in love with him straight away. Buying him was the best decision we ever made. He has been an absolute pleasure to own.” “We have spent many months training and schooling, mainly showjumping and a few cross-country trips. I have only just started taking him out competing these last few months and he has shown how much of a superstar he is already! Qualifying for Hickstead at Cobham Manor was only the 3rd showjumping show that I’ve taken him to. He flew round confidently and was definitely happy to go higher and my hope for the future is to event him. I think he definitely has the potential for this and I think he would love it!” “My sister Daisy also rides Rocky and will also be taking him out showjumping/ eventing soon. When I go to university or travelling she will be his main rider. I can’t believe how good this pony has been to us considering his young age.”

most famous showground – The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead. We caught up with a few competitors about the start of their journey…

Louise Tullett with Black Jack 70cm Show Jumping at Blue Barn Equestrian Centre, Kent Louise Tullett from Kent had a riding gap of 15 years before she acquired her 6-yearold, 13.2hh, Cob cross, ‘Jet’ last May. They obviously formed a great partnership very quickly and qualified for last year’s Sunshine Tour Championships. “Jet and I qualified last year in the 70cm senior and when we went to the Championships at Hickstead we won the 70cm Senior Show Jumping, and the Scurry, and the 70cm Supreme Champion in Show Jumping!!” “Jet is such a great pony but very fast and strong so it’s all or nothing with him, he’s so much fun. We have qualified again for the 70cm senior and I’m hoping we can qualify for bigger classes too.”

Karen Ockelford

Laura Bailey

Kasey Morley

19-year-old Iona Zaharieva started riding at 8 years old at an Icelandic Pony Riding School and has owned Disan Imposition, aptly known as ‘Diva’ for 5 years. Iona has big dreams and Hickstead is a perfect step along her route following her desire to one day make the British Team and compete at the Olympics. Iona told us all about her ‘partner in crime’, Diva: “She isn’t very big, standing at 15.3hh but boy does she make up for it in sass, she is rising 13 years old. Her stable name couldn’t be more suited to her cheeky character – but I wouldn’t change her for the world!” “We didn’t have the easiest of starts, both of us have our own quirks but I think we are finally on track, having grown together and really becoming a team. I’m a perfectionist to a fault, which is one of the reasons I love dressage. I love the technicality and how it is nearly impossible to reach that 100% mark but always have room for further improvement.” “We are both ecstatic at the chance to be competing at the Sunshine Tour Championships this year, it’s a dream that has become a reality at last! We have never competed at such a prestigious event and look forward to seeing everyone there. Good Luck to all!!”

Kasey Morley with Atla Breeze Intro and Prelim Dressage at Burstow Park Riding Centre, Surrey Kasey has a long history of riding rescue ponies and has produced her own 15.2hh coloured cob, Atla Breeze from a four-month-old colt to a super all-round family horse. “I purchased Atla Breeze from a friend when he was four months of age. I have backed and produced him with the help of my mum and we have taken the slow and steady route. We have decided not to rush Atla in his training as we as we like the slow and steady approach. It seems to be paying off now and he’s beginning shine and as well as proving to be the family horse we have always wanted.

Laura Bailey with Crosstown Porsch 80cm & 90cm Show Jumping at Norton Heath, West Sussex Laura has owned 11-year-old, Irish Sports Horse Crosstown Porsch (Riley) for almost three years. “We compete in all disciplines but most recently have been focusing on show jumping, which Riley loves! We are so excited to have the chance to compete at Hickstead on The Sunshine Tour.”

Karen Ockelford and Pauldarys Chumba Wumba Novice Dressage at Bridge House Equestrian and 90cm Eventers Challenge at Coombelands, West Sussex Karen has owned a variety of horses during her years’ involvement in the equestrian scene, which now includes the role of Riding Club Secretary. Her current horse is a Pauldarys 12-year-old mare, known at home as ‘Girlie’. “She was bred at the Pauldarys stud and is a lovely Holstein, and she’s far too smart for her own good most of the time! With her previous owner she competed up to Novice BE and now she’s teaching me so much, whilst challenging my ability at the same time. I hope to keep improving on her and competing at unaffiliated level in dressage, combined training, cross country and horse trials. I keep her at livery at the foot of the South Downs, which means we have endless and fabulous hacking. The highlight of our partnership so far was being part of our Riding Cub team that qualified and went to the National Horse Trials Championships last year. We’re really looking forward to coming to Hickstead, it’s such an exciting opportunity for Riding Club level competitors!”

Sunshine Tour 2016 ❘ Rider Profiles

Jennifer Attrill with Woottonheath Muztang, Cameron Skyfall and Brynera Elins Last Showing at Isle of Wight M&M Society Show, Isle of Wight

Fenella & Elizabeth Nordquist

Jennifer has a very busy championship ahead of her, with her two New Forest ponies and her hunter horse qualified. She lives on the Isle of Wight and helps to organise the M&M Society, with the help of her mum they have qualified in In-Hand and Ridden showing classes. “We purchased Woottonheath Muztang (Tango) and Cameron Skyfall (Sparky) at the Beaulieu Road sales at the age of 4 and 5 months old, for a grand total of £55. Now 3 years old they’ve both turned out very well and have taken part in various shows both on the Island and the mainland, gaining good placings in M&M and Youngstock classes. “This will be the ponies first trip to the Sunshine Tour, but I did compete in the 2014 Championships with my 17hh show hunter gelding Brynera Elins Last (Humphrey). I thought it would be nice to try and get all 3 boys qualified this year in the hope of getting them all to Hickstead.”

Fenella and Elizabeth Nordquist with Jananda Braveheart Intro and Prelim Dressage at Hall Place Equestrian Centre, Berkshire

Fenella has enjoyed a lifetime of riding and a wonderful competitive partnership with her Anglo-Arab, Raj. Now 26 years old Raj has been retired to “enjoyable neighbourhood hacks” but the gap has been unexpectedly filled by her daughters’ 12hh Welsh section B, ‘Tom’. The family have owned Tom for 4 years and Fenella started riding him to keep him fit, schooled and sensible for her girls to learn on. “Towards the end of 2014, my oldest daughter Elizabeth, now 12, gained confidence and began to ride more and more. In February 2015, we decided to take Tom to some dressage competitions in which the two of us would compete at different levels to get him used to the venues. To our surprise, by the end of the summer we had both managed to qualify for the 2015 Sunshine Tour Championship; Elizabeth in the Walk Trot and I in the Prelim. Neither of us had ever thought that we would end up riding at such a prestigious venue as Hickstead. Upon arriving, we were even more overwhelmed by the scale of the event, having only competed in local shows; I was so proud of Elizabeth and what she had achieved in such a short time.” “Tom was amazing on the day and took it all in his stride. He was very chilled out, a real superstar. During Elizabeth’s riding of her test, we noticed a film crew from Horse and Country overlooking the proceedings. We learned from the cameraman to watch a programme called Ruddell’s Roundup and amazingly the show ended with the “tranquillity of the dressage” and we were so excited as they zoomed in on Elizabeth and our small chestnut pony performing their dressage test. I was very pleased to get a 6th place in the Prelim as was Elizabeth with her 18th place for such a prestigious event. The 2015 Sunshine Tour was such an amazing experience for the both of us and I am very excited to have recently qualified for the 2016 Sunshine Tour Championship and hopeful that Elizabeth will too.”

Easter Regional Report

❘ Sunshine Tour 2016

Show Jumping – Easter Regional Report I t’s every budding show jumper’s dream – to ride at Hickstead! And last year saw the first chance for

up-and-coming and unaffiliated riders to do just that. The Sunshine Tour is a unique opportunity to ride in a championship at such a prestigious venue and with the generous support of the Bunn family, small and large show centres across England, Scotland and Wales can now offer this fabulous opportunity to their local riders.

Burstow Park Riding Centre, Surrey Sunday 27th March ‘From the bottom up’, the show jumping competitions offered at Burstow park in March started at 40cm and topped out at 85cm. Katie Godwin bravely hung on to first place in the 40cm opening class, despite ‘Shark Attack’ snapping at the heels of her pony, Percy. Benjamin Howlett who rode Shark Attack did a fantastic job to gain 2nd place, ahead of Jemma Belton riding Megan and Lea Woodman with Smudge in 3rd and 4th place. Estelle Conetta with her ride, Savannah took the honours in the 65cm class closely followed by Katie Cassin riding Charlie. Smudge gained a double qualification with a second rider, Sophie Edwards in the 65cm and proved the star of the day by carrying a third rider into a qualifying place, 2nd in the 75cm with Alfie Sturley. The 75cm class was won by Charles Jepson with Roxey. Final class of the day, the grand prix 85cm was won by Kimberley Smith riding Bebe and second place went to Charlotte Elliott riding Strattonstown Diego. Coombelands Equestrian, West Sussex Monday 28th March Braving the element and the remnants of Storm Katie, Coombelands Equestrian just managed to continue with their show jumping competition on 28th March. The first

two classes had to be abandoned but later in the morning, with the jumps firmly sand bagged the competition

started in earnest. The Cobb family were rewarded for their tenacity with a win for Cameron riding William in the 75cm, and a double win for Ann-Marie riding Practically Perfect in the 80cm and 90cm. one better than practically perfect! The 75cm was closely contested with 2nd and 3rd placed riders Minnie Barnell and Alice Crowley both recording double clear with their ponies Basil and Silver. In the 80cm and 90cm another rider managed to pick up dual qualification with 2nd place in both classes going to Venetia Manuel riding Sparkling Quest. The remaining qualifiers of the day were picked up by Emily Martin with Beechwood Surprise in the 75cm, Val Pufrey with Gambler and Kally O’Keefe with Way Up in the Sky in the 80cm and Clare Kemp-Welch with Lily and Kitty Addison with Pitcher in the 90cm. Well done to all those riders for keeping going in the windy weather, let’s hope the Championship lives up to its Sunshine name! All Stars Jumping, Essex Sunday 27th March Opening the proceeding on 27th March at the All Star Jumping, Annabel Harvey-Mason riding her pony, Graishall Getain won the 50-55cm class and picked up her qualification ticket for Hickstead. Second place went to Mirrun Carter with Sugar, closely followed by Kerry palmer with Magic. Georgia Handley with Norton won the 60cm class and Freddie, Coco and Biscuit all recorded double qualfications with placing in the 60cm and 70cm classes. Norton stepped up a gear to also secure the win in the 80-90cm, with Addie Carter riding Clive coming 2nd and the consistent Freddie picking up a 3rd place and a third qualification! NM

Cyden Stallions ❘ By Lara Dyson In this issue Cyden Stallions owner Lara Dyson explains how to keep stallions focused, especially when they combine competing with stud duties

can sometimes be a challenge. A well mannered stallion is undoubtedly a sight to behold but when their attention starts to wander, they can be difficult to control. For breeding stallions that also compete, the crowded environment at shows can be overwhelming, and in this situation, when there are other horses, including mares and stallions nearby, it is vital to be able to maintain your stallions focus on you. As Cyden Stallions owner and dressage rider Lara has a great relationship with her boys, KWPNapproved Cyden Bodyguard Moorland and NWPCS pony stallion Cyden Oostings Amigo, both of whom

have developed a reputation for exceptional temperaments. For Lara, it is important to keep her stallions focused both at home and away at competitions, something that requires a very different approach for both scenarios. “Stallions become bored very easily so the more you can keep them entertained the better. Both my boys really enjoy their work and thrive on being praised, however, it is always a good idea to let them think they are in the driving seat by rewarding positive behaviour,” said Lara. A varied routine is essential for all horses but especially stallions to prevent them from switching off and help keep them enthusiastic and engaged in their training. Although Lara competes in dressage, she regularly includes pole work and jumping into her stallions training to keep them refreshed and focused on the next task ahead. Lara also believes in the benefits of groundwork to help build the bond between horse and rider. This can also help keep the focus on the rider when they are in the saddle which is especially useful in the warm-up arena when competing. All Lara’s horses are introduced to halter training as youngsters, a skill taught to her by natural horseman Guy Robertson. All horses must be allowed time to just ‘be a horse’, including stallions and high value competition horses and in order to be afforded this luxury they must be able to enjoy time in the field. Keeping a stallion stabled for long periods and in isolation from other horses is both unnatural and can contribute to them becoming difficult to manage. This is particularly the case if the only time they leave the stable is to be ridden or to perform stud duties. Allowing grazing time gives their mind a chance to relax.

❘ Cyden Stallions

“For me turnout is highly important as you cannot expect them to perform to the best of their ability and concentrate, if the only time they come out of the stable is to be worked. I also allow my stallions to have what I call ‘loose time’ in the arena where they play with a large gym ball, which is fun to watch! “Although Bodyguard and Amigo live out during the summer, they inevitably sometimes have to be stabled, such as during bad weather and when competing away from home. I always provide them with a treat ball full of Baileys Fibre Nuggets to keep them entertained,” added Lara. With breeding stallions that are also competition horse’s consideration should be taken about where they carry out their stud duties. By sending them away to stud they will not form any association with home and breeding, keeping their focus at home on training and competing. This also prevents the owner from handling them during covering, which again disassociates home from stud duties. All the effort that goes into creating respect and a bond with your stallion is hard work well spent when it comes to taking your stallion to competition. Nowhere is it more important to keep his focus on you than when you are in the warm-up arena. Keep your warm-up varied with lots of transitions to Lara Dyson

Cyden Bodyguard Moorland proving stallions can be relaxed in the field

maintain their attention on you the rider and not on other horses, and be very aware of what is going on around you. If horses are misbehaving, a stallion will quickly pick up on the stress, so try and stay out of the way. Be prepared to stray away from your usual warm-up at a competition and go straight into trot to settle him before you start your warm-up properly. Stallions undoubtedly have special personalities that make them uniquely different from mares or geldings and to develop a mutually respectful bond with a stallion is incredibly rewarding and well worth the effort. Cyden Bodyguard Moorland will be standing at Stallion AI Services for a limited period in April and June for fresh and chilled semen. Frozen semen is available all year round from Cyden Bodyguard Moorland, Cyden Oostings Amigo and Cyden Cadans M. NM

International dressage rider Hannah Biggs Hannah Biggs takes emotional win at British Dressage National Championships

Archie gives his all!

I

nternational dressage rider Hannah Biggs has won the Advanced Medium Freestyle class at the British Dressage National Championships (Hartpury,

Gloucester, 10th April) with her own Don Schufro gelding, ‘Don Caledonia’ on a score of 75.83% “He gave me the most incredible feeling, so soft and willing to dance with me!” Hannah and Don Caledonia (Archie) rode to their music composed by Tom Hunt, which featured a medley of ‘Tinie Tempah’ and ‘Labyrinth’, to the delight of the crowds spectating in the indoor arena. “The music was spot on and everything came off with perfect timing! I was so proud of Archie giving me his all in there!” Says Hannah. The win was extra special as it was the same class Hannah won in 2008 with her recently retired Grand Prix stallion Weltzin. “I am dedicating this to my original superstar stallion. I have to admit to being a little emotional as I came out of the test. Proper happy tears!” Hannah and Archie showed their consistency performing at championship level, after also taking 3rd place in the previous day’s Advanced Medium Open class

on 70.57%, also winning a prize for the highest placed British bred horse. Hannah finished 6th in the same class on Camarilla Calimero (Cara), a ride she has very high hopes for. “Cara felt like a million dollars performing some truly spectacular work to finish with 70.04%. The judges were so excited about her for the future, a true international superstar in the making!” Said Hannah following the prizegiving. Hannah and her team now look forward to even more success in the summer season. NM

The Blue Cross Home Direct Scheme Spreading the word about Nelson with Blue Cross in the hope of finding him a new home

Blue Cross Victory for Nelson W ith a namesake famous for his naval conquests as well as his missing eye, little one-eyed Nelson’s battle for survival was also aquatic. The neglected 12hh pony was found struggling to live in a grassless, waterlogged field but with the RSPCA and Blue Cross on his side Nelson won his fight for a better life. Through the charity’s innovative Home Direct Scheme he has been matched with his new owner, who is totally smitten with her new equine hero. Nelson was a seven-year-old stallion when he, and two geldings, were found by the RSPCA in a flooded field with no grass. His right eye was missing, looking as if had been surgically removed a long time previously, probably because of an injury or infection. The trio had not been provided with any hay, hard feed or day-to-day care and were in a very thin and neglected state. The ponies were rehabilitated by the RSPCA and their previous owner was eventually prosecuted. Nelson was gelded and initially placed in a new home but he had retained some dominant, stallion-like tendencies. These proved too much for his new owner so Blue Cross was asked to step in to help through the Home Direct Scheme. Emily Lambert, Blue Cross Home Direct Homing Assistant, explains: “Sometimes when stallions are gelded later in life they can still show some challenging stallionlike traits and need skilled and careful handling. Luckily for Nelson the owner we found for him, who is experienced with more difficult horses, was looking for a companion pony to live with her herd of two. Paddy a black and white cob, now 19 and arthritic who can no longer be ridden and his little companion, Mowgli, a Welsh section A.” “Nelson is such a sweet and inquisitive pony”, said Janet West, from Suffolk. “He always comes to the fence to greet me. It took a few days for the ‘pecking order’ to be established, but now the boys are settling well. It just takes a little patience and ingenuity to keep them safe while they settle.” The Blue Cross Home Direct Scheme enables the charity to rehome a privately owned horse into a Blue Cross home whilst it is still in the care of its current owner.

Blue Cross still carries out all the usual assessments for both horse and potential new home, but doesn’t have to admit the horse to one of their centres, which keeps much-needed space free for the most needy welfare cases. Most horses can be considered for Home Direct unless they are on long-term medication. Blue Cross initially assesses horses, before a full vet health check and home-finding begins. Appointments for potential new homes are conducted in the presence of a member of the Blue Cross horse team to make sure a suitable match is made. Blue Cross has recently joined forces with RSPCA to help rehome horses from RSPCA centres through the scheme. Anna Hemmings, RSPCA Centre Manager said: “We were very pleased to have the help of Blue Cross to spread the word about Nelson’s story to a wider audience in the hope of finding him the special home he needed. We look forward to continuing to work together with Blue Cross and their Home Direct Scheme to place even more rescued equines into loving new homes.” NM

advertising feature ❘ FMBS A-M PecDominal Pad The Pecdominal Pad – How it can be used with other Activo-Med products to provide an impressive all-over therapy solution

All-over Activo-Med! A ctivo-Med state of the art therapy systems apply pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) and massage therapy to different areas of the

horse’s body. The Pecdominal Pad, one of the most recent additions to the range, is the only product to apply these therapies to the pectoral and abdominal areas. When used in conjunction with other ActivoMed products, for example the Combi Pro rug and leg wraps, the Pecdominal Pad can provide an impressive all over therapy solution for the whole horse. “This is a really well designed product that targets muscle groups that normal rugs can’t access,” said Serena Hickson from FMBs Therapy Systems. “It works well with the Activo-Med Combi Pro to provide massage and PEMF all over the horse’s body. When used with Activo-Med Leg Wraps and Hoof Boots, the coverage is even more extensive.” The Pecdominal Pad fits around the chest and girth areas and is highly adjustable for the perfect fit. The product can be bought on its own with a massage and PEMF Back Pad as a full system, or as a component part if you already own another ActivoMed system. When bought as a system, the control

box supplied contains preset programmes that apply different combinations of PEMF and massage to suit the horse’s needs. Fred and Rowena Cook from Equine Management and Training use the Pecdominal Pad on horses in their rehabilitation and training yard. “The Pecdominal Pad is another excellent piece of kit from FMBs,” said Fred. “The combination of therapies makes it the perfect pre-exercise warm up and cool down tool for horses that are prone to tightness in the shoulder and/or chest area. It can also help target-treat muscle injuries and bruising incurred through falls or hitting fences. That we can use the Pecdominal Pad in conjunction with the leg wraps or boots in an added bonus. “We have also found it useful for horses that have had gastric ulcers and, although the ulcers have been treated, still present sensitivity when girthed.” The Activo-Med Pecdominal Pad is available to buy or hire. Payment terms available. NM
