Hunting with Southdown and Eridge

A

s the 2014/2015 Hunting Season draws to an end, we thought we would take a nostalgic look back over the season and discover just how popular this controversial sport is these days. It is well known that to enjoy the Season, it is preferable to get in as many meets prior to Christmas as possible, as not only does the weather close in, culminating in lost days, but hunting also coincides with the shooting season which can in itself cause difficulties. This year the ground in January was exceedingly wet causing many cancellations but never dampening spirits. The Southdown and Eridge Hunt this year experienced a massive turnout at their Boxing Day Meet in Lewes in East Sussex, literally attended by hundreds and hundreds of expectant onlookers and supporters. So popular was it, that it was covered by the BBC, possibly as a result of this year being the 10th anniversary of the Hunting Ban and the feint hope of repeal in the offing. Since 2004 and the introduction of the Hunting Act, this particular hunt celebrates trail hunting, that is hunting an artificial line or trail in accordance with the law. By doing so, traditions are still upheld and the horses get to have a wonderful day out by running together as a pack and not forgetting that the hounds are able to enjoy and receive a fantastic exercise; whilst onlookers can still enjoy the magnificent sights and sounds of the hunt. The Southdown and Eridge Hunt in particular go out of their way to encourage and support up and coming youngsters who show an interest. In October one meet in particular included up to 50 children taking part. Regular Sunday sessions take place for the children that include an Introductory talk and meet the hounds with advice on how to behave when out hunting. This is followed by the invited children being taken out with the Huntstaff for a couple of hours. Not only does this continue an interest to the next generation but it also teaches them how to behave responsibly, thereby securing the practice for years to come. Many of our readers will get a chance to meet with The Southdown and Eridge at this year’s South of England Show at Ardingly on 11th – 13th June when they take part in the Cavalcade of Hounds, a much anticipated part of the show and one that is usually met with great applause and cheering. Ten years on from the Hunting Act, it would appear that the sport has not declined in the slightest, it has adapted and as a result grown enormously in popularity, as this year’s turnout at the Boxing Day Meet in Lewes pays testament to. Q & A ❘ Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS Weaning time is a big event in a foal’s life and needs to be well planned to minimise stress and potential injury. The important thing to remember is that there is no one right way to approach weaning as everyone’s situation is different.

Weaning and mastitis

F

By Paula Broadhurst

oals are usually weaned at four to six months of age. The foal starts sharing the mares feed early on in life and by five to six months of age is getting their primary nutrition from hard feed, grass and hay. Weaning at four months is often done on the Vets advice if there is concern over the foals’ speed of growth and we need to slow things down or if the mare is struggling with her own condition. Some people like to wean later at seven or eight months of age which is fine if neither of the above issues is a concern. Ideally the foal is not left with the mare indefinitely to wean of its own accord as this often doesn’t work and you can have a 2 year-old still suckling from a very tired and worn out mare! Ideally your mare and foal have been part of a small herd group with four or five other mares and foals enabling an individual mare to be taken away every couple of days eventually

ending up with a group of foals; the foal stays with their peer group and in the paddock they are used to. It is important that the mare can be moved far enough away from the foal that they cannot hear each other call as this would cause them to fret for much longer and potentially jump or go through fences to get to each other. Most people do not have the above situation available so options need to be sought such as a professional stud facility for weaning and then bringing the mare and foal home separately once it is completed. Alternatively introduce a quiet pony or retired horse into the paddock with the mare and foal for a few weeks so the foal gets to know the new friend. On weaning day the mare is taken away to stay somewhere else (at a friends place?) and the foal continues to go out with the pony. Make sure however, if the foal is getting left in a stable for the moment the mare is taken away, that the top door is closed as many will try and jump out! A little oral sedation can also be given based on vet advice to both the mare and foal if required. Some people have great success doing a gradual weaning process where the mare and foal start going

into separate stables (with viewing between so they can see each other) at night and then out together during the day. Once this routine is established they then start going out in paddocks side by side during the day. Watch out as some mares will position themselves beside the fence so the foal can still reach through and suckle! The mares’ milk will usually dry up over a period of a few weeks to a couple of months, some will be quicker and others take longer. You should not strip the milk out as this will only stimulate the mare to produce more milk and prolong the whole process. Moving the mare into a paddock with less grass and slightly reducing her feed for a week or two may also help her dry up quicker. There are no reliable drugs that can be given to horses to dry the milk up; tincture of time is usually the best treatment. You should monitor the udder to check that it is evenly swollen and not excessively painful. One side of the udder becoming excessively swollen and painful could indicate a mastitis developing that requires veterinary treatment. This may just involve simply sedating the mare to strip out the affected quarter and treat with a single dose of intra-mammary antibiotics. However sometimes ongoing daily striping, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are required. The most important thing about weaning is to plan for it and if you have any concerns about your whether your mare has mastitis to contact your own veterinarian to discuss. NM

London Harness Horse Parade

E

Easter Monday, 6th April 2015

aster Monday and the sun shone. A welcome change for the London Harness Horse Parade as in recent years the weather has been more than a little unkind for the event. This year saw some new entries to the event and it was particularly lovely to see the newcomers and the younger drivers taking part. Most were surprised to find the charismatic George Bowman in attendance and many lucky entrants were awarded their rosettes personally from George who had this to say on his day “I thoroughly enjoyed myself; it was wonderful to see all the different types of vehicles and the horses again.” The last time George attended the Parade it was still being held at Hyde Park. Credit must also go to Sarah Dance from Thimbleby & Shorland and Colin Hurd, Area Commissioner for BDS West Sussex who kept everyone entertained with their exhaustive commentaries. NM

Forelock Books

Finding Freddie

F

orelock Books was set up a few years ago by Michelle Charman who took the very brave step to go it alone as a book publisher. We are delighted to say that Forelock Books is now a well known name on the children’s equestrian book scene bringing that joy of reading and imagination back into our lives. One such character that has evolved in the publishers’ imagination is the joyful pony Freddie Forelock. However,

a real live pony after a nationwide competition to find him. We are pleased to say that Freddie (his real name) is alive and kicking at Mount Pleasant Farm in Flimwell, East Sussex where he is happily owned by Sally and Hannah Williams, but entered into the competition by Ava and Poppy Bland. At seven years of age Freddie only measures in at eight hands, although by the way he loves his food and herby treats he should be a giant of an

Freddie is no longer a figment of imagination; he is now

animal but the girls are careful not to over treat him. After a great romp in the forest, Freddie likes nothing better than to have a good role in the field with his friends Daisy and Maisie. Daisy, a lovely Fjord pony is his best mate; they gallop round the field together and loll about in the spring sunshine. Being a little wary of puddles, has helped Ava acquire the art of hanging on, he has a lovely thick mane to help with this. Together the girls have learnt how to groom, tack up, roll up stirrups, pick out his feet, mount from the ground and a block, plus they have both learnt to do the rising trot which is very fast! The thing Ava likes best of all is cuddling the very loveable Freddie and Poppy likes leading him into his field and watching him roll. NM

STERLING SILVER FOX BROOCH

Something foxy from Hiho Silver NagMag’s competition winner will receive the new Sterling Silver Fox Brooch from Hiho Silver. Hiho Silver has introduced a new silver brooch for spring, which captures the curves and character of a rather special fox. The fun brooch has an abstract style showing the fox’s head and features with a big tail curving up behind it. Made from sterling silver, it looks great on a range of coloured scarves and coats. It comes with a sturdy pin going across the back to make sure this fox stays where he should be! Their brooches are always popular, and “it’s great to see customers trying them on at shows,” says Emma Warren from Hiho Silver. “This latest addition, the Sterling Silver Fox Brooch, has been introduced in time for the show season, and we’re looking forward to seeing the reaction from our tradestand and website visitors”. Chairperson, Sophie Harding says “We are particularly proud of our club members, Jason Webb, Kerry Bean and Joel Sics who have been selected for the UK Open team to play in the World Cup. It’s a brilliant achievement to have so many of our players competing at the pinnacle of our sport in South Africa. And all can come and watch as Kent Target are pleased to announce that they will be hosting an exhibition match at their annual tournament to be held at Risebridge Farm, Goudhurst on Saturday, May 23rd at 3pm featuring the UK Team against an invitational ‘Rest of the World’ Team. It would be great if the public could get behind us and we are looking forward to giving a good demonstration of our sport in May.” The team will travel out to South Africa at the end of June to spend a week working with their randomly

allocated pool of horses creating a test of horsemanship as well as pure polocrosse ability. Seven other countries are competing in the competition, including three hotly tipped African countries; South Africa, the hosts and reigning champions; Zimbabwe and Zambia. The other countries are the double world champions Australia and then New Zealand, Ireland and the USA. Sunshine Tour 2015 ❘ Rider Profiles

Evie Sharma

The Sunshine Tour season is in full swing now with qualifier competitions being held all over the country. New centres are still signing up as word about the exciting final at Hickstead is spreading. The Sunshine Tour office is busy processing the competitors’ registrations and preparing for the big day! Evie Sharma – Super Smart makes a Super Prospect Qualified Class 1 70cm Welsh Sec B Elstead SJ

Natalie Shiel

New partners, 10 year-old Evie and Hilin Morgan have been together for less than a year. They qualified in show jumping at Elstead Riding Club in March and this will be Evie’s 3rd year at The Sunshine Tour, but her first on Morgan. Although they only started competing last November the pair have already had some success show jumping; Katie’s mum Michele told us about how they’re getting on, “she’s about to try her hand at dressage and has her first ODE coming up. She belongs to Chiddingfold Farmers’ Pony Club & Elstead Riding Club and has recently been competing unaffiliated show jumping and has just become a British Showjumping member, so is looking forward to having a go at affiliated jumping. Her goal is to be comfortably jumping 75/80cm by July.” “Morgan is a super smart 10 year-old 13.2hh Welsh Sec B, he’s been a perfect second pony after her cheeky first pony, 12hh Welsh Sec A. She is very excited at the prospect of competing at this year’s Sunshine Tour at Hickstead. She would love to win a sash plus the Sunshine Tour hamper!”

Natalie Shiel – Life long ambition to jump at Hickstead Qualified ISH – 85cm Bury Farm

Shannon Taylor

25 year-old Natalie qualified at Bury Farm Village, Buckinghamshire in the 85cm show jumping. She took part in the 80cm & 85cm classes, just missing out on a qualification in the 80cm but making a tidy job of the 85cm to gain 5th place and the all important yellow card. Natalie told us about herself and her 16.1hh, Chestnut Irish Sport Horse mare, Mrs Doyle aka Missy, “I completed an Equine Science degree at Warwickshire College and now I am out competing most weekends. I’ve owned Missy for nine years, she was a very naughty 3 year-old that loved to buck and bronc, but our partnership has gone from strength to strength over the years. I am looking forward to fulfilling a life long ambition to jump at Hickstead.”

16 ❘ NagMag

Shannon Taylor Qualified Prelim 19 Dressage Cob X Bury Farm Equestrian 18 year-old Shannon Taylor, from Milton Keynes has been riding since an early age. She qualified with her 15hh Cob cross mare, Summer Blaze in the Prelim dressage at Bury Farm Equestrian Village, Buckinghamshire. Shannon tells us how she came to own Summer, “In 2009 my dad suddenly passed away, at this time my mum decided that I should have a project to work on to help me through such a tough time, so we bought Summer at the age of three. That’s when all of the hard work and patience came in! “Summer is a beautiful coloured cob now just turning 9 years-old. We take part in a mix of all disciplines and she will always please, she gives 210 per cent at anything you throw at her! She can be cheeky but it is safe to say, I will never find another like Summer and I cherish every moment we have.” “I’m thrilled to have the opportunities the Sunshine Tour will bring us and we are very much looking forward to our time there.”

rolifically busy show venue, Sands Farm held dressage in March and BD judge Thelma Russell-Hayes had a busy day judging from Prelim to Elementary. Aladin III worked his magic in the first class, the Prelim 7 for Chloe Byrnes with a clear win over 20 marks ahead of 2nd placed Claire Guy with Ruby. Only one ¼ of a mark separated the 3rd and 4th placed riders, Shirley Martin riding Another Arkle in 3rd and Marie Baines riding Chasing Chance in 4th. Prelim 13 was won by Romy Charlesworth riding Charlie with a smooth test resulting in 68.1%, ahead of Chloe Byrnes and Aladin III and Kathryn Yetman with Grey Goose. In this class qualification was passed ‘down the line’ because of professional riders, so 9th placed rider Sophie Adsmead was very happy to pick up a yellow ticket for her ride on Flying Flynnigan. re you looking for something that will challenge your riding skills? Are you a thrill seeker? Then Reining could be the perfect equestrian discipline for you. Reining could be known as ‘Western dressage’. In both dressage and reining, the rider has to accomplish a set of skills while at the same time demonstrate an understanding between themselves and their ride. Reining has come a long way from the early American settlers and their ranch horses which had to be ready to manoeuvre and change direction whilst being on a loose rein. As a discipline, Reining has become so popular that it is now part of the World Equestrian Games and the European Equestrian Games programmes. To hand you over to a major player in this world, we spoke to Francesca Sternberg. Francesca,

run the highly successful, Sterling Quarter Horses in Bodiam, East Sussex. To keep the tradition going her daughter Tabitha and niece Jess now compete at an elite level in reining. Linda Warburton asks Francesca Sternberg: How did you transfer from Eventing and Side Saddle to Reining? My sister bought an American Quarter Horse to hack round the farm as she wanted a “sane and safe” horse but one that had quality. She then had a skiing accident that prevented her from attending a clinic with a World Class trainer so persuaded me to take her place.

I was completely amazed at the level of schooling, the things the horses and that trainer could do and became hooked. At first I used my new knowledge to help with the schooling of my Hunters and Eventers but after a while I decided to switch completely as it was becoming a full time job. To change styles was a little challenging at the start but it didn’t take long and it hasn’t stopped me from being able to climb back on an “English “horse and jump a hedge! I think that riding western makes you a better rider and horse-person as, at the upper levels, it is so subtle and there is no room for error so you have to be very precise. I still have all my side saddles and habits….who knows what the future might bring. Was it your sisters influence and did she breed quarter horses at the time?

INTERVIEW : Francesca Sternberg My sister has always been very interested in the breeding of horses, analysing blood lines and performance records, which I think is based on her first career here on the farm, where we had an extensive Dairy herd. She strongly believed from the start, as do most QH breeders, in the importance of breeding for a chosen career path for the horse, not just breeding to see what your mare will produce. It shows that she was right as she is now the breeder and producer of one the most influential sires in The USA, Smart Spook, whose offspring have won nearly two million dollars of prize money. She started breeding horses almost the moment we started with the Quarter Horses.

A reining horse has to be a great athlete, because of the demands of the sport. However he or she is nothing without a good mind and a big heart. The most talented horse is hopeless if he is not generous and is not willing to step up to the challenge when needed. Does the crowd participation and the music ever upset the horses? From their third year Reining horses are subjected to noise when they compete and so mostly they

I was thrilled to go over the $300,000 prize money bracket. I am very honoured to have been part of the Team GBR are used to it. Also if your horse is really dialled in and listening to you, the rider, he will not hear it. We as riders are the same, when we are really concentrating everything else Tabitha Sternberg Allen on Yelena My Way

© LAndrea Bonaga

Has your husband always been your coach in this discipline since day one? Actually no. When I met my husband I had already had the opportunity to ride with several of the best trainers in the States, and had already competed at AQHA World Show in America. However, we have ridden together now for more than 25 years and I still learn things from him. He also has me watch all his competition horses as I am his “eyes on the ground” and so it seems that it all works pretty well. We both also try to ride with other World Class trainers each year so that we can continue to evolve our own programme. It is really important to continue to improve; the sport does, and you do not want to be left behind. However, I can honestly say that Doug’s programme has been the best one for me, for the longest time, and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without him! What makes a good reining horse?

is blocked out. The only times it may be an issue is somewhere like the World Equestrian Games where it is like a rave meets a football game! My horse whinnied all the way to the centre of the Arena in France last year, as he was concerned and did not like the big screen hanging just above his head and in Aachen I don’t think my horse ever heard me say whoa! However once we got going they were with me all the way and did not seem to affect them. England, USA or Europe – is there a difference in the reception from the audience? No, I think audiences worldwide are just as enthusiastic. If they like what they see they let you know. Actually the worst thing that can happen to you when you out in the arena is for there to be a deathly silence. Then you know you are in trouble!

INTERVIEW : Francesca Sternberg Of your achievements so far, which are you most proud of? I was thrilled to go over the $300,000 prize money bracket. I am very honoured to have been part of the Team GBR Team for the last four WEGS and I cried like a baby when my daughter won a Bronze FEI medal in Italy two years ago on my old and most favourite show horse of all time, Yelena My Way. At 16 years old he was the most senior horse in the competition. People thought I was crying because of Tabitha, of whom I was of course hugely proud, but I was actually crying because that grand old stallion looked after Tabitha all the way. Those Quarter Horses temperaments are exceptional. I was also very proud when my book “Reining Dreams” made the top 10 Equestrian books list a couple of years ago.

Championships, which I am hoping to be selected for and then in November I will be competing at the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma. In the future I would like to try for an NRHA World title as now that Doug has won one I think I had better try and catch up!! NM

What is next for you? I am going to be showing quite

a bit in America this year, as I have had to miss the first part of the European season due to knee surgery. I managed to survive last year with a very unstable joint as it was the WEG year and I couldn’t have the down time associated for the proper recovery. I managed WEG with a lot of bandaging and bracing but it was not a situation that could continue for much longer. I have spent the last three months doing a lot of rehab following the surgery. I have a couple of young horses that I will compete in the States for this part of the season and then bring them over for the latter part of the year. In August there are the FEI European

Horseboxes ❘ By Shearwater Insurance If you have a lorry or trailer to transport your equine then insurance is an important matter to you. We speak to Oliver Lawton at Shearwater Insurance to help answer some of questions surrounding horsebox and trailer insurance.

Keeping your wheels on the road this season What kind of insurance do I need for my horsebox? Horsebox insurance varies in levels however the majority of people choose to take out a fully comprehensive policy. Shop around to ensure your cover fits all of your requirements and look at the excess you will be paying to ensure it is affordable in the event of a claim. It is also worth looking carefully at your yearly mileage as insurance companies offer something called a ‘limited mileage policy’ which means if you are doing less than 5,000 miles a year your premium could drop to as much as half of the cost. Do I need insurance for my trailer? You do not actually have to have a separate policy for a trailer as during use, when it is attached to a car that is insured sufficiently, your trailer is covered for third party liability only – which means if there is an accident any damage to property or other vehicles you will be insured. However this will not cover you for theft or damage to the trailer itself so it is always advisable to take out a separate insurance – usually at a minimal cost – to protect you in the event that it is stolen or involved in an accident. Trailer insurance will not automatically include breakdown cover, however many companies do offer it as an add-on. Look for a policy that gives total breakdown cover in the UK, including emergency road assistance, long distance recovery and home breakdown for trailer owners. In the event of a breakdown that couldn’t be repaired – this policy would organize alternative transport for the horses. This is something you should always check when taking out a breakdown cover. Can I take other people’s horses in my equine transport? In the event that you wish to transport other people’s horses – providing there is no exchange of money other than say a share of diesel costs, this will still be classed as

social, domestic and pleasure use so you will be protected. If you do wish to charge a fee above the maintenance costs you will need to contact VOSA to discuss whether you need a transporters licence and you will then need to review your policy with your insurers to ensure the correct level of cover is in place. It may mean that you will need Hire & Reward Use. Do I really need separate breakdown cover? The services that you receive from you breakdown organization will depend on the company you use and the level of cover you take out. In the case of transporting horses, or any livestock you are always advised to ensure you have as comprehensive a cover as possible – and always check with the company that they will assist with the horses should they require alternative transport. For this reason it is beneficial to use a specific company who will be knowledgeable and sympathetic to your problems – should the occasion arise. It is also worth ensuring that anyone over the age of 25 is covered to drive the vehicle – this should not cost any more to do and in the event that you are unable to drive will make sure you are fully protected.
