125 YEARS OF HERITAGE - THE SETUP

On the day of the Marist Mass hosted by Sacred Heart College on Heritage Day 2014, it is natural that our thoughts inevitably went back one hundred and twenty five years to the beginnings of Marist work in Johannesburg. The scene at the mass - our beautiful school in the midst of a huge city - is a far cry from what was no more than a mining camp when the first Brothers arrived in Johannesburg. The Marist schools at Observatory, Inanda and Linmeyer, too, are vastly different from the make-shift structure in which the Brothers

began teaching at Koch Street on 9 October 1889. The Mass was a reflection of our faith in God, our trust in Mary and St Marcellin Champagnat and in all those who work with us in the task of educating youth. It is as is quoted in the Marist work ‘Water from the Rock’ that Marist spirituality inspires our understanding of how we are to live what Jesus commands us and what Champagnat dreams for us.

TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION SACRED HEART COLLEGE FIRST WITH ITUNES UNIVERSITY AND TECHNOLOGICAL ENTREPENEURSHIP IN SOUTH AFRICA

7

Sacred Heart College is the first school in South Africa to integrate iTunes University into its curriculum. iTunes University is an online learning platform that administers over 350 000 educational courses from respectable sources. Acclaimed educational institutions like Harvard, Yale, Stanford and many schools abroad are using iTunes University as a flexible environment with which to design and administer a course that allows easy access to resources and information. iTunes University is being used for Sacred Heart College’s Grade 7 Technology app development project and for the Grade 7 art curriculum, which focuses on portraiture and digital art. “The benefits for learners using iTunes University are multiple,” says James Smurthwaite, Sacred Heart College’s iPad 1:1 Project Coordinator, “Firstly, it allows for a changeable learning process in which they are able to continue with a course and subject outside of the classroom environment. This facilitates the possibility for learners to pace their progression through the course as well as have the ability to refer to the goals, outcomes and requirements referentially at all times. The learning path and direction are clear. The learners also have the opportunity to interact with fellow learners and teachers outside of class time about the course and subject matter, which includes additional resources and information”. Colin Northmore, the Head of Sacred Heart College says that iTunes University prepares learners for a future that does not exist yet, doing jobs that have to still be invented, “iTunes University creates an individualised learning experience for children that allows them to gain skills that are transferable across all areas of their life.”

ACTIVE CITIZEN SCHOLARSHIP Sacred Heart College launched South Africa’s first Active Citizen Scholarship in 2013. “The Active Citizen Scholarship reflects Sacred Heart College’s commitment to education for the common good, and is an extension of our ethos,” says Heather Blanckensee, the Principal of the High School. “Shortlisted candidates will have to write the normal Mathematics and English scholarship examinations. However, the primary criteria for this particular scholarship is demonstrable evidence of the applicant’s commitment to social good, neighbourliness, volunteer work and community building.”

To apply or for more information email marketing@sacredheart.co.za

An education at Sacred Heart College does not begin and end with strong academics, but also involves a serious commitment to society. Sacred Heart College believes that there are many young people in their communities making a difference, and would like to challenge others to be an example.

THE PARENTS ASSOCIATION

Chairperson of PACE Lindiwe Ndlela lindiwe@pdg.co.za

Our vision is to create a wonderful experience for parents.

“The Marist values of Presence, Simplicity, Family Spirit, Love of Work and Mary’s way give a quality of authenticity and kindness to our relationships”

The Primary and High School Parents’ Associations fall under PACE, a sub-committee of the Sacred Heart College Board tasked with internal marketing and communication. We strive to bring parents, students, teachers, and staff together to help build a better and more vibrant school community. We provide volunteer support to the College, and serve as a liaison between the school and parents.

Who we are

There is something that will suit your available time, skill or resources. The options for involvement are many and varied. We also outline some of the channels of communication open to parents. Take advantage of these and join the network!

• improve communication

School events like inter house athletics, the biannual fete, Mindworks and the College Masses have proved that our parents love an opportunity to hang out at school with friends and family and see what the learners are up to. We would love to meet you. Contact us … now: pace@sacredheart.co.za

We are a group of parents who meet once a month in the school coffee shop, Habits, at 7.30 am to discuss areas where we can support the school. All parents are welcome to join us at the meetings.

What we do

• build community spirit

• support teachers • mobilise support for school events • initiate projects • communicate concerns and opinions to school management – the parent voice If you are new (or even not-so-new) we will help introduce you to the workings of the school; we will meet you on the first morning of the school year at the coffee shop to show you around the school and answer questions.

If we don’t know the answers to your questions we undertake to find out and get back to you!

REGGIO-INSPIRED PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL

REGGIO-INSPIRED PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL The Reggio Emilia approach to teaching young children puts their natural development, as well as the close relationships they share with their environment, at the centre of its philosophy. The foundation of the Reggio Emilia approach lies in its unique view of the child. In this approach, there is a belief that children have rights and should be given opportunities to develop their potential. Influenced by this belief, they are seen as beautiful, powerful, competent, creative, curious, and full of potential and ambitious desires. They are also viewed as being active constructs playing the active role of apprentices. This role also extends to that of a researcher. At Sacred Heart College, we celebrate the children being a central part of their learning. They learn through play and the questioning of the environment around them. Exploring and investigating through light, observational drawing and moulding clay are important teaching methods. Our aim is to give children a selection of opportunities to learn from, as Malaguzzi, the founder of this approach, believes: “The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivation and the richer their experiences.

LEARNER LEADERSHIP PRIMARY SCHOOL

LEARNER LEADERSHIP 2014 2014 has given the Grade 6s an opportunity to grow and learn as Marist leaders. They are encouraged to take responsibility for a range of duties from first aid and catering to recycling. They are also entrusted with caring for younger learners. Their leadership training included peer teaching, running of committees and guidance from their older ‘brothers and sisters’ in the Matric LLC around issues of respect and communication. Their hard work and enthusiasm contribute to successful highlights such as ’The Angel Touch’, ‘Helpful not Hurtful – using positive and kind words and actions’ and ‘Wake-up wellness’ as well as the ‘Mandela Day 67 minute Walk’, that raises funds for charity. The St Marcellin Committee spent time with children from St Jane de Chantal Children’s Home and Nazareth House Children’s Home. Congratulations Grade 6s of 2014 for your commitment to learning and growing in leadership!

LEARNER LEADERSHIP HIGH SCHOOL

LEARNER LEADERSHIP 2014 The LLC’s main aim for this year was to build school spirit. They did this by continuing with War Cry Wednesdays, SuperFan and SuperCrit for sporting and cultural events. The LLC of 2014 had an eventful and rewarding year, starting off with the New Learners’ Party. The theme for this was the Amazing Race; this allowed the learners to discover where some of the important places in the school are. This was followed by some eats, drinks and music in the hall. In February, the LLC hosted the annual Junior High social. This years theme was a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. This event was extremely successful and fun was had by all. As part of their outreach, the LLC worked with the Peer Responders to raise awareness and show support for all types of people by handing out purple and orange ribbons for LGBT’s. The LLC also collected tins of food to send to the striking miners and their families. To keep school spirit going and to keep learners up to date before, after and during any events held at the school, the LLC created an Instagram account. With regards to their actions within the school, the LLC ran parliament sessions during the year, where learners could raise their concerns about the school in general. This was followed up by the members of the LLC and taken to management to discuss. The results of the discussions were reported back to the school at feedback sessions at assemblies. One of the biggest concerns raised was about the use of iPads by the Grade 7s. The LLC worked with the Grade 7s to come up with strategies to allow them to leave their iPads at breaks and start socialising instead, this was very successful.

SACRED HEART COLLEGE PRIMARY SCHOOL HOSTS FUN AND INNOVATIVE INTER-CATHOLIC ATHLETICS MEETINGS

SACRED HEART COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS TEAMS FINISH 1st AT INTER-HIGH AND 2nd AT INTER-CATHOLIC

Sacred Heart College hosted two Primary School Athletics Meetings on 19 and 26 September. The meetings were unlike any other, as no scores were kept and the Sacred Heart coaches introduced a number of original field and track events.

The Sacred Heart College Athletics team finished the athletics season on a high at the B League Inter-High meet on Thursday 2 October, finishing first overall. There were eight schools competing at the meet which saw the College promoted to the “A league” in 2015. Congratulations must go to George Mokoena for winning the prestigious senior Victor Ludorum on the day.

Seven schools attended the Foundation Phase meeting on 19 September, and six schools attended the Intermediate Phase meeting on 26 September. The programme included traditional track and field events, along with a number of elementary courses such as a ball and hoop race, a sack race relay and an obstacle course. “The aim of these events is mainly to build relationships, mass participation, healthy competition and to develop a love for physical activity,” says André van der Merwe, head of the Primary School Sports Department at Sacred Heart College.

The team also competed at the Inter-Catholic meeting on Thursday 25 September, finishing second overall to De La Salle College. Mbali Khumalo had an outstanding meet, breaking three Inter-Catholic records in the U/17 girls category for shotput, discus and javelin, an amazing effort. Thanks must go to the coaches and managers, Ms Niken, Mr du Toit and Mr Baran. They were assisted by Sacred Heart College alumnus, Tshepo Moloi, who worked closely with the sprinters. “The team’s success is largely due to their commitment to training throughout the season,” said Mr. Augustin, Head of Sports and Physical Education at Sacred Heart College High School. “Over the holiday period, there were over 40 learners at school training and over 70 regulars on the training track throughout the season. The results show for themselves and the learners should be extremely proud of their efforts.”

2014 HIGH SCHOOL SPORT REPORT

2014 SACRED HEART COLLEGE SPORT RESULTS

“I must say a big thank you to the extended Sacred Heart community for welcoming me to the College. As a learner I attended Marcellin College, a Marist Brother School in Melbourne, Australia as well as having taught at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College in Alice Springs (Central Australia). I was not sure what I was getting myself into when I arrived here at Sacred Heart College but it was made very clear from the onset that the Marist family spirit is alive and kicking no matter where you are in the world.

• • • • • • • • • • • •

This year has seen some outstanding results across a number of sports. At our first sports awards I conveyed the fact that we are extremely lucky here at Sacred Heart College to have some of the best fields in the area, a beautiful pool and an indoor stadium. Facilities that other local schools could only dream of. The school has played host to numerous festivals and meets including U/13, U/15 and U/19 Inter-Catholic Soccer, Youth Soccer Festival, U/19 Netball Inter-Catholic Tournament, Athletics meets, many swimming galas and plenty of cricket, netball, basketball and hockey fixtures. With the numerous sports offered at the college there have been plenty of trips/ meets and tournaments, which have kept the learners extremely busy. These have ranged from the Midmar Mile swim to the St John’s Basketball tournament to Inter-Catholic Cross Country and everything in-between. As you will see from the list below Sacred Heart does not just have a long list of cultural and social feats but is also a force to be reckoned with on the sporting field.

A big thank-you to all of the learners that have been involved throughout the season (some taking part in 3-4 sports throughout the year). To the staff who have managed and coached the respective sports, the sports program would not be possible without you and the ground staff who have been here on most weekends to prepare and make our facilities some of the best in the area. With our swimming, athletics and netball teams moving up to higher leagues and our cricket & hockey teams entering new leagues I look forward to the year ahead and hope to see a number of you on the sporting fields supporting our Sacred Heart College learners. SACRED HEART COLLEGE’S DRAMATIC ARTS WOWS CHILDREN IN TEXAS AND FLORIDA

The videoconferencing facility at Sacred Heart College has given learners the unique opportunity to be the only school in Africa to collaborate internationally in Performing Arts. A programme called TheatreLink run by the Manhattan Theatre Company in New York has made this a possibility. The Grade 11 Dramatic Arts Class of Sacred Heart College produced The Disappearance for the Theatrelink Project. Only 20 schools worldwide participate in this innovative and exciting initiative. Schools write original plays for their partner schools to produce, and watch each other’s work via live video conferencing. The classes in geographically remote locations then discuss the streamed performance with their partner school. The Disappearance was written by a school in Texas, and produced by the Sacred Heart College learners. In turn, the school in Florida has produced a play called Amandla written by Sacred Heart College. The Sacred Heart College Grade 11 class performed The Disappearance to fellow learners and visitors in the school’s Old Chapel Theatre on Friday 30 May. The play revolves around a disjointed family dealing with an abusive relative, and a terrible mistake

that two sisters make in order to protect their grandmother from her son’s actions. The play was completely run by the Grade 11 class of Sacred Heart College. By attending videoconference lectures, the class learnt about (and were assigned) theatre jobs, such as: acting; stage managing; set and costume designing; makeup and marketing. “TheatreLink provides a cross-cultural experience for the learners,” says Sacred Heart College drama teacher Tamara Schulz, “and it is a fantastic opportunity for them to go through the entire play-making process, from writing through to directing, acting, designing and doing the technical work. It gives them a hands-on experience that exposes them to career opportunities in the Performing Arts at an international level.”
