PROBLEM BRIEF

LOCATION
SENIOR AND YOUTH CO-HOUSING Thesis project 4th year studio
MAJOR DEMOGRAPHIC SHIFT Happening in the world today
SENIORS BEING ISOLATED From community increasingly
2.1B PEOPLE IN THE WORLD Above the age of 60 by 2050
My thesis project was to design a senior housing in an urban area as i found that most of the senior housing places are located on the outskirts of the cities and the housing located in cities are disconnected from their neighboring communities. SOLUTION Making a housing unit in urban area by satisfying the needs of the senior citizens through community integrated devlopment
RISE IN NUCLEAR FAMILIES Hence old people live alone
14.2% OLD AGE DEPENDANCY RATE In India, increased from 8% in 2011
SENIOR AND YOUTH CO-HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN DELHI
Hence th site is located in Dwarka sector 19b, and the site area is 2.3 hectares.

Housing was placed with longer side facing north south orientation and shorter side facing east west direction. Also to prevent the shade of the south side neighboring building to block light into the housing complex, the housing was placed along the northern side of the site
The hot air enters the building from west side, and then rises up and gets released while the trees in the courtyard and plants in the balconies help in filtering the air The open corridors, courtyard, and balconies maintains a continuous airflow in the building.
The commercial area stays cool due to the rooftop farming done, and also helps in cooling the air which enters the housing area. It also acts as an activity that brings the communities together in an urban area.It also acts as a recreational area for the community.

Essentially located in south west part of the capital, sarojini nagar is one of the most famous shopping destinations of the city. Aside from the market which is placed almost centrally in the area, it also has housing for the government employees and is currently decided to be redeveloped by the DDA as the housing which is mainly G+1 cannot accommodate the growing population and required density of the city.

•
ALL THE BUILDINGS ARE PLACED ALONG THE PERIPHERY , TO REDUCE TH MASS BULK RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE , LEAVING IT OPEN DUE TO WHICH FROM THE MAIN ROAD THE SITE DOESN’T LOOK CLUTTERED.

MOST OF THE BUILDINGS ARE PLACES IN NORTH – SOUTH ORIENTATION, SO THAT EACH UNIT GENERALLY LIGHTS UP AT DAYTIME.

THERE ARE COMMERCIAL SPACES ON THE GROUND FLOOR OF MOST OF THE BUILDINGS ,WITH OPEN AREAS WHICH CAN BE USED FOR WEEKLY MARKET
