Program Description The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Diploma is offered as an intensive full-time program, which is designed for both novice and experienced teachers who wish to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in Canada and/or globally. The primary objective of the teachertraining program is to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to become successful ESL/EFL teachers. Each course in this program is designed to provide a solid grounding in both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching ESL to adults. The courses engage students with key concepts in linguistics, phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, assessment, language teaching methods, and grammar in the context of teaching English as a second language.

Overview of Curriculum
Introduction to Linguistics (35 hours) This course introduces the fundamentals of applied linguistics, historical
linguistics, and sociolinguistics, and examines how the concepts therein relate to TESL. Topics include: the history and nature of language development, major
models of linguistic description, competence and performance, formal language
versus informal language learning, language learning vs. language acquisition,
models of second language acquisition, learning strategies and styles, factors affecting language learning, the adult learner versus the child learner, and the sociolinguistic dimensions of second language teaching and acquisition.
Sociological and Sociopolitical Issues in TESL (25 hours) This course examines social concepts within the realm of Canadian sociocultural
and sociopolitical contexts. Issues such as multiculturalism, cultural pluralism, acculturation, and diversity are identified and analyzed. Students also learn about institutional and individual barriers to participation in Canadian society, culturally
determined life styles/learning styles and their effect on second language learning, anti-racism education, ESL/EFL in global situations, and English as a global language.
Linguistic Systems (30 hours) This course examines the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the English language. Topics include: morphology, semantics, phonology, phonetics,
phonetic transcription, articulatory phonetics, segmentals and suprasegmentals, syntax, the foundations in pedagogical grammar, and the influence of first language on English acquisition.

Overview of Curriculum
Foundations in TESL Methodology (60 hours) This course examines prominent instructional methodologies used in the field of TESL. Topics include: a survey of second language teaching approaches and
methods, new technologies in TESL, guidelines and formats for lesson planning, classroom management, classroom material development, textbook evaluation, syllabus /course design, and action research and reflection. This course also explores topics such as Canadian Language Benchmarks, LINC curricular
guidelines, English for Special Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and ESL literacy.
Instructional Skills (70 hours) This course explores the principles of teaching the four strands of language acquisition, consisting of listening, speaking, writing and reading skills.
Furthermore, best practices concerning the incorporation of technology into lessons and the instruction of pronunciation, grammatical concepts, developing vocabulary, error correction, and feedback are examined.
Assessment (30 hours) This course examines assessment in ELT, and concepts related to testing and development of tests. Topics include: principles of second language testing,
techniques and interpretation of language assessment of student progress and proficiency, developing effective classroom-based tests, and survey of
assessment tools. Students also analyze the concept of standardized language tests, feedback, and error corrections.

Overview of Curriculum
Practicum (50 hours) In order to successfully complete the program, students must take part in a practicum, where they observe ESL classes and gain valuable experience
though practice teaching. The practicum is comprised of 30 hours of classroom
observation and 20 hours of supervised teaching with a qualified teacher trainer. This component of the TESL Diploma enables students to apply their knowledge
of theory and methodology in an approved ESL instructional setting. Students are provided with the opportunity to observe the dynamics of different ESL classes and levels, and recognize a variety of learning and instructional styles
and techniques applied therein. Furthermore, students will evaluate classroom
teaching/learning and develop skills necessary for lesson planning and delivery, and effective classroom management.
A supervised teaching practicum in an approved setting will be arranged for each student upon registration. The practicum component will have to be completed within the duration of a given TESL program.
Oxford College will conduct workshops to enhance professionalism in the TESL Program. Program Requirements Students must fulfill the following requirements in order to successfully complete the TESL Diploma: • Successfully complete all six courses and the practicum
• Obtain a minimum passing grade of 70% for each course and the practicum • Complete practicum hours and requirements
• Have 100% classroom attendance for all courses
• In the case of extenuating circumstances, where student is forced to miss a class and is able to provide proper documentation accounting for the absence, additional assignments will be given at the discretion of the instructor in order to make up for missed classroom hours. • Students who fail the same course more than once will be discontinued from the program. • Students who fail two or more courses will be discontinued from the program
Schedule of Course Offerings The TESL Diploma is offered as an intensive full-time program, which runs for 16 consecutive weeks, and consists of 25 hours of instruction per week. Courses are offered from • September - December, • January - April, and • May-August

Entrance Requirements 1) University degree from an accredited college or university: An official transcript is required, which shows degree conferral from an accredited university located in Canada. Applicants who have completed their education outside of Canada must have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), which verifies that the foreign degree is valid and equivalent to a Canadian degree. 2) Proof of English Language Proficiency Non-native speakers of English must show proof of English Language Proficiency (ELP), and demonstrate evidence of the requirements below.

Regulations Related to Fee Payment The application fee may be paid by cheque or credit card. Course fees can be paid by certified cheque, cash or any major credit card. Refund, Withdrawal and Cancellation Policy To cancel or withdraw from any course, students are required to provide a written letter highlighting the reason for withdrawal. If trainees decide to withdraw from the program within a period of seven days after the contract has been signed, Oxford College will refund 100% of the tuition fees, minus $500 and applicable fees. If a trainee withdraws from the program within five business days after the first class, 75% of the tuition fee is refunded, minus administration fees. If a trainee withdraws from the program within three weeks after the first class, 30% of the tuition fee is refunded, minus administration fees. If a student withdraws from the program after three or more weeks into the course, they are not eligible for any refund.
International trainees please note: • All administration fees, accommodation fees, airport service fees, and bank transfer fees are nonrefundable. These fees are referred to as applicable fees. • If an international trainee has not been granted an entry visa to Canada, Oxford College will refund 100% of their tuition, minus applicable fees. • In the case of course withdrawal international trainees may have to • re-apply for a new study permit • contact the agent for a refund
• prove that the subsequent stay in Canada is lawful, or • provide evidence of a ticket leaving Canada

Trainee Rights All students and employees have the right to study and work in an environment that is free from discrimination and/or harassment. Activities and /or language that indicate harassment or discrimination will be zero tolerated.
Trainee Appeals If students feel that they need to make an appeal because they do not agree with the evaluation of an assignment or with a final grade, the student must first discuss the matter with the course instructor in an attempt to resolve the matter. If the matter is not resolved, the student should discuss the matter with the Coordinator of the TESL Program and finally consult the College Academic Director. Students must keep all assignments until they receive their final grade. No appeal will be considered unless a complete file is submitted at the time of the appeal.
Academic Dishonesty Oxford College is committed to high academic and professional standards. As a member of the academic community, students are expected to uphold academic honesty. Academic honesty requires that students do not falsely claim credit for the ideas, writing or other intellectual property of others, either by presenting such works as their own or through impersonation. Thus acts of Plagiarism, cheating and collusion are not acceptable in or out of class. Oxford College has a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism and cheating. In the first offence, students caught engaging in plagiarism or cheating will receive an automatic zero on any assessment or project. A second offence will result in the expulsion from the program.
Student Responsibilities Students MUST refrain from: • Collusion & Plagiarism.
• (Students must cite all references using a recognized or specified reference style and give credit to the original author at all times. All assignments must be written alone and must be the student’s own work unless otherwise specified. • The use of ANY notes/materials while completing a test or examination, unless otherwise instructed • Copying from a classmate during a test or examination
• Communicating with others during a test or examination
• Tampering with any evaluation form or report (altering or destroying information).
• Using cell phones, pagers, or any other electronic devices during tests, quizzes, or exams. • Students caught with such devices will automatically receive a mark of zero.
Campus Location Oxford College is located in the heart of Scarborough, within close proximity to public transportation, shopping malls, restaurants and endless greenery. The main campus measures an impressive 43 000 square feet of space, inclusive of classrooms, student lounges, computer labs and libraries. Students may enter the building through the main doors located on the south side of the building, or through the east entrance. Access is restricted to students, employees, service providers and clients.
