ast month was a fun one; I hope that you participated in the first NOLA Locavore Challenge with me. It hasn’t been easy eating mostly locally produced foods, but what an eye opener! Who knew that the majority of foods stocking my kitchen don’t even have local ingredients, much less are locally produced. Finding and keeping an adequate supply of local foods in the house proved to be an unexpectedly tough challenge for this working woman, but the rewards feel good. Lee Stafford and his team are to be commended for enlisting local chefs, food markets and farmers’ markets in the effort. They all made it an informative and enjoyable communitywide happening. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event, with the intention of being even more mindful of eating locally in the meantime.

After a busy start, summer’s sauna-like heat now beckons us all to take things a little slower, and Natural Awakenings has some cool suggestions for chilling out, inside or out. In “The Beauty of Summer Boredom,” on page 16, Lisa Gromicko explains why it’s important to give our children and ourselves some downtime.

My own summer childhood memories include many days of “doing nothing” with friends and cousins. Of course, we were doing things like riding bikes and hatching creative play schemes, but there were no plans or schedules to follow. It may sound odd or even wasteful in today’s fast paced and over-scheduled culture, but I vote for regaining the art of “doing nothing.”

If chilling indoors is appealing to you, may we suggest some mind-body practices offered through group classes or one-on-one sessions? Summer is a good time to indulge in some private yoga or meditation sessions with a teacher, when their schedule and yours may be on the lighter side. You’ll find many helpful resources in this issue.

Pilot studies with 239 Aetna employees have confirmed what yogis and meditation practitioners have long believed—that applications of mind-body techniques and practices can help decrease stress and improve overall well-being; all of it works to save health care dollars. Donahoe sells donated doubloons to benefit the project, which he started after his father, Jim Donahoe, died of cancer in 1994. In addition to operating expenses, the funds raised by the doubloons are used to purchase four o’clock flower seeds that are distributed for free. he Mind-Body Center of Louisiana (MBCLA) is hosting a free event in Grand Isle July 23 where residents can learn about self-care techniques for anxiety, depression, low energy and other chronic ailments. Urban Farming Teaches Leadership to Youth

G

row Dat Youth Farm, a new program that offers local youth opportunities to learn farming techniques and gain leadership skills is launching a two-acre farm in City Park to be set up by students who honed their skills by assisting urban farmers across the city early this summer.

The goal is to have produce to offer for sale by January of 2012, according to farm director Johanna Gilligan.

Tulane City Center, a community-minded institute within the Tulane School of Architecture, is a founding partner for the program, which is based on the Food Project in Boston. Its mission is to develop leaders by using the farm as a tool.

The program seeks to hire 15-18 year olds through “recruitment schools,” according to Gilligan. So far Grow Dat has recruited from New Orleans Science and Math Charter School, but that will be expanded to two public and one private starting in the fall. Since the program is affiliated with New Orleans Outreach, the school provides the transportation to and from the work site.

ccording to the Center for Disease Control’s statistics, the number of children diagnosed with autism and related disorders has increased at an alarming rate since the 1970s. Today one in every 150 8-year olds in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism or an autistic spectrum disorder. While the cause is hotly debated in the medical community, standard medical treatment mainly addresses management of behavior and symptoms.

Some families of autistic children have found hope and seen remarkably positive changes in their children through treatments using low-pressure hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The therapy involves the use of greater than atmospheric pressure oxygen as a drug to treat basic disease processes and hence their diseases, according to Dr. Paul Harch, who introduced it to the U.S. as a treatment for pediatric brain injury in 1992. The therapy is based on the premise that oxygen can be used therapeutically for a wide range of conditions where tissues have been damaged by oxygen deprivation and that by restoring that oxygen, much of the lost function can be restored.

In 1996 Dr. Harch treated his first autism case with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Harch says it was the success of treatments in autistic children that underscored for him that HBOT is useful for a wide range of neurological disorders, almost like a generic drug. Even though autism and many neurological disorders are not now thought necessarily to be associated with brain tissue damage, the treatments result in positive permanent physical changes in the brains of the patients along with improvement in function of the patients as a whole.

Over the years a wide variety of conditions have been treated with positive results using this type of medical grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy in individuals with stroke, dementia, learning disability, decompression sickness, wounds, infections, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, recovery from plastic surgery, sports injury, traumatic brain injury and more.

Dr. Paul Harch Dr. Harch has developed a system of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT®) which administers pharmacological doses of oxygen into a hard shell chamber, which distinguishes the system from versions sold for in-home use. Administration and monitoring by a qualified physician is necessary.

Unfortunately, Medicaid and Medicare do not cover HBOT treatment for all conditions, including autism and related disorders at this time. Private insurers vary on coverage.

Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week, is the first step toward better health for every body type, according to Kaiser Permanente, a leading health plan provider spearheading the nation’s new Every Body Walk! awareness campaign. This simple, take-charge message comes in the wake of an annual national medical bill exceeding $2.5 trillion, with about 80 percent of it spent on treating chronic conditions that can be prevented or treated by regular walking, according to Dr. Bob Sallis, a family physician with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

“Walking is an excellent form of exercise for everyone, and for those with conditions like diabetes, asthma, heart disease and depression, a regular walking regimen has the added benefit of helping to manage these diseases [and conditions],” advises Sallis. “I’m a strong believer in the power of walking, and that’s why I literally prescribe it to my patients as frontline medicine—often in place of medications.”

Fifteen years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General’s landmark Physical Activity and Health report concluded that Americans’ sedentary lifestyle is a primary factor in more than 200,000 deaths a year. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 70 percent of American adults ages 20 and older are overweight or obese; some 72 million are medically obese. Seventeen percent of U.S. youths ages two to 19 are obese, as well. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development projects that within a decade, three out of four Americans will be overweight or obese, unless we get moving.

Friends Can Add Sizzle to Your Romance

eed to spice up a romantic relationship that’s in the doldrums? A Wayne State University study reveals dating couples that integrate other couples into their social lives are more likely to have happier and more satisfying romantic relationships.

In the study—named When Harry and Sally Met Dick and Jane—Assistant Professor of Psychology Richard B. Slatcher, Ph.D., worked with 60 dating couples in a controlled laboratory setting to better understand how couples form friendships and how these friendships affect each couple’s relationship. Each couple was paired with another couple and given a set of questions to discuss as a group. Half of the group, dubbed the fast friends group, was given high-disclosure questions to spark intense personal discussion; the other half received typical small-talk questions.

“We discovered that those couples that were placed in the fast friends group felt closer to the couples they interacted with and were more likely to meet up with them again during the following month,” says Slatcher. “We also learned that these same couples felt that these new friendships put a spark in their own relationships, and they felt much closer to their romantic partners.” They also reported learning new things about their partners through this novel experience.

Blueberries Assist Artery Function

A

study conducted by the Agricultural Research Service’s Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences indicates that eating blueberries may help prevent atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. When researchers spiked the diet of 15 lab mice with freeze-dried blueberry powder (comparable to a half-cup of the berries) for 20 weeks, they found that the size of harmful lesions (plaque) measured on two sites in their aortas were 39 and 58 percent less than for 15 mice in a control group.

IN PAIN? TRY MEDITATION

S

cientists at England’s University of Manchester have confirmed how some people suffering from chronic pain might benefit from meditationbased therapies. They concluded that people that are more advanced in meditation practices (up to 35 years) are likely to anticipate and experience pain less than less-advanced meditators or non-meditators.

“Meditation trains the brain to be more present-focused, and therefore to spend less time anticipating future negative events,” comments Christopher Brown, Ph.D., who conducted the research. When testing the pain tolerance of study participants using a noninvasive laser, the researchers noted unusual activity during anticipation of pain in part of the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain known to be involved in controlling attention and thought processes when potential threats are perceived, but more study is needed.

Participants had a diverse range of experiences with various meditation practices, spanning from months to decades. All of them perform some form of mindfulness meditation—such as that which is the basis of the MindfulnessBased Cognitive Therapy recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for recurrent depression, because up to 50 percent of people with chronic pain experience depression.

“The importance of developing new treatments for chronic pain is clear,” says Brown. “Forty percent of people who suffer from chronic pain report inadequate management of their pain problem.”

S

ummer-sweet watermelon is known to be high in fiber and nutrients and low in calories. Now, evidence from a pilot study led by food scientists at Florida State University suggests that eating watermelon might also help dispel pre-hypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease.

“Even better, it may prevent the progression from pre-hypertension to hypertension in the first place,” says lead researcher Arturo Figueroa, an assistant professor at the university. A University of Illinois study estimates that as many as 60 percent of U.S. adults have elevated tension levels.

Why might this large-size fruit pose such a benefit? “Watermelon is the richest edible natural source of L-citrulline, which is closely related to L-arginine, the amino acid required for the formation of [the body’s own natural] nitric oxide, essential to the regulation of vascular tone and healthy blood pressure,” says Figueroa. Once in the body, the L-citrulline naturally converts into L-arginine.

The scientists caution that consuming L-arginine as a dietary supplement isn’t a good option, because it can cause nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort; watermelon, on the other hand, provides a safe delivery system.

It also has been shown to help reduce serum glucose levels. All of this makes watermelon a “functional food,” because it offers health-promoting or disease-preventing properties beyond its delicious taste.

Host an Urban Youth’s Vacation and Change a Life The Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer vacations to 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Again this year, another 5,000 will spend part of their summers with volunteer host families in communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Some 3,000 more will attend a Fresh Air summer camp in Fishkill, New York.

Boys and girls, ages 6 to 12 years, visit 305 Fresh Air Friendly Towns each summer for one or two weeks. Sixty-five percent of the children are re-invited to stay with the same host families, year after year, sometimes up to the age of 18.

Fresh Air children and volunteer families often form bonds of friendship that last a lifetime.

There are no financial requirements to host a child, and host families are not paid. The Fund also has a program for placing children who have special physical or emotional needs.

More Young Adults Put their Hands to the Plow Conditions are perfect for a new generation of farmers in their 20s and 30s that distrust industrial food systems, are intent on meaningful employment and may well succeed an aging farm populace. More are starting small farms and joining networks of like-minded agriculture enthusiasts, according to a recent story in The New York Times, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to transform the budding trend into a fundamental shift. Last year, under a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill, the department distributed $18 million to educate young growers and ranchers across the country.

Garry Stephenson, coordinator of the Small Farms Program at Oregon State University, says he has not seen so much interest among young people in decades. “They’re young, energetic and idealist, and they’re willing to make the sacrifices,” he says.

According to the USDA’s 2007 Census of Agriculture, farmers over 55 currently own more than half of the country’s farmland. According to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, the hope is that some of the beginning farmers will graduate to stakes in midsize and large farms as older farmers retire.

The Beauty of SUMMER BOREDOM

Recapturing the Golden Days of Childhood

by Lisa Gromicko Remember those endless hours of imaginative play during your youth—tree climbing, making mud pies, flying kites, fishing, building forts/tree houses/lemonade stands, swimming, watching clouds, playground swinging, tea parties, making and then launching sailboats in the creek, catching fireflies/butterflies/frogs, playing jacks and pickup sticks, jumping rope, hopscotch, rolling down hills, daisy chains, skipping rocks, backyard camping, neighborhood baseball games (with self-made rules), twilight games of hide ‘n’ seek and flashlight tag?

T

he summers of childhood are potent, enabling children to find their personal bliss and cultivate interests and memories that can last a lifetime. The gifts of less-structured summer days are precious, allowing time and space for the possibility of magical activities. Both children and parents benefit from unscheduled breathing room to revisit the forces of creativity and restore resiliency.

Yet, according to a University of Michigan study, today’s children have as much as 12 hours less free time per week than 30 years ago. Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting – Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids, urges parents to simplify their children’s schedules, to establish for them, “… islands of being, in the torrent of constant doing.”

We all require downtime to function well. Payne maintains that, “Rest nurtures creativity, which nurtures activity. Activity nurtures rest, which sustains creativity. Each draws from and contributes to the other.”

More, boredom is a gift for children, “… a rare fuel to propel them forward,” writes Nancy Blakey, a columnist for Seattle’s Child magazine.

Bonnie Harris, author of Confident Parents, Remarkable Kids, cites a lack of boredom in children today as the reason that many graduates flounder in the

“real” world. Boredom works to spark the discovery of one’s own passions, inner resources, ingenuity and ability to be self-directed—all critical lifetime skills.

Overscheduling often substitutes stimulation for experiencing selfdiscoveries that unlock the tremendous stored potential of a child’s inner resources and imagination. Remarks Payne, “A child who doesn’t experience leisure—or better yet, boredom— will always be looking for external stimulation, activity or entertainment… [and] a culture of compulsion and instant gratification. What also grows in such a culture? Addictive behaviors.”

So, how do we find our way back to those simpler days? Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, likes, “The dugout in the weeds or leaves beneath a backyard willow, the rivulet of a seasonal creek, even the ditch between a front yard and the road—all of these places are entire universes to a young child. Expeditions to the mountains or national parks often pale, in a child’s eyes, in comparison with the mysteries of the ravine at the end of the cul-de-sac.”

He recommends allowing children the time to be in nature to take walks, listen, play and learn. Time in nature allows the senses to become enlivened again.

Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood and 21st Century Boys, observes, “The loss of outdoor play and everyday adventures is particularly significant for children who have a tendency to be easily distracted or impulsive.”

One of the biggest benefits of a slow summer, for everyone, is ‘play’ itself. There is compelling evidence of the essential need for this age-old childhood pasttime. So, encourage children to engage in the simple pleasures that will potentially create and strengthen the most glorious, blissful and ‘boring’ memories of their childhood summers—and we’ll likely rekindle our own.

“We are changing up the idea that profit is the highest priority,” he said. Organizations that need instructional, performance or meeting space use the upstairs community space. “This all plays into making a coffee house – a place outside of home and work, a third place, a place that interacts with the community, people from all walks of life come together and understand each other – this helps build a stronger community.”

Fair Grinds offers fair trade and organic coffee, organic teas, locally grown fruits and vegetables and pastries and cakes from local bakers, some of which are vegan or glutenfree. He hopes customers will discover that the shop’s pastries taste great because they try them, not because they are vegan, he said.

Thompson’s baristas recycle, offer compostable cups, and compost the coffee grounds through a local community garden, among other practices. His customers appreciate these practices and feel more comfortable there than in a “corporate clone,” he said. “We see our front room as an adjunct to your living room.”

Thompson signed for the Green Games because he would like to reduce energy use. “We are trying to hold the line, but the only variable we have much control over is utilities and waste,” he explained. “Spending money on [Green Games] is an investment.”

aynham Environmental, LLC provides consulting on environmental and energy issues, with a focus on energy efficiency. Linda Baynham, who has worked in the field for 20 years, has been at the Rocky Mountain Institute and more recently at Entergy. She is now working on the city’s Energy Smart energy efficiency programs

“My company offers this specialty as it’s the field that I love to work in but also because until recently, there was a shortage of energy efficiency programs in the Southeast,” she said, noting that there was no such program when she moved here in 1999. “I got into the field as energy use is a major environmental impact but energy efficiency programs and implementation can reduce emissions while making economic sense to businesses and residents.”

“As a consultant who works on environmental issues, I needed to show how a company could implement my recommendations, and gain valuable experience doing it on my own,” she said. Her small home office employs recycling, composting, and energy efficient appliances – even an Energy Star metal roof. But she recognized there is room for improvement: she often forgets her re-usable cup when she walks to the coffee shop.

Improving her environmental performance has helped her work with customers, and the energy efficiency upgrades to her home, done through the HERO program and federal tax credits, have saved her money. She also teaches a class on Environmental Strategy for business, getting an outside consultant to help her improve informed her as a teacher.

A

rtEgg Studios is a repurposed warehouse available for creative people and businesses.

Tucked between Earhart and the Interstate, ArtEgg offers 50 units for rent to artists, graphic and fashion designers, writers, photographers, collectors, set builders, musicians, and small businesses and nonprofits. All tenants are committed to rebuilding the city in creative and sustainable ways.

The ArtEgg is celebrating its 10th anniversary, according to Esther Dyer, who purchased the building in 2001. Hurricane Katrina blew off the roof. Rebuilding was slow due to insurance issues and it took a “huge financial toll.” The space was not available for rent until 18 months after the storm.

Despite the challenges, Dyer renovated the building with sustainable design elements. There is now a bamboo floor in the Atrium, “enviroglass” in the kitchen, energy efficient fixtures, solar tracking skylights, solar tubes and other design features to improve the building’s environmental footprint.

“ArtEgg’s rebuilding green has attracted tenants and therefore improved occupancy,” she said. Soon Kids Rethink New Orleans will move in and help recreate an adjacent garden. “Prior to Katrina this was designed as a permaculture garden - and then it was in disarray,” Dyer said. “Today with the vision and volunteers of the Rethinkers, the garden is becoming a wonderful place to be and to grow things again.”

Dyer signed up ArtEgg for the Green Games to find improvements, and to help propel the organization into the future.

If you are not thinking about those issues, you are selling yourself short and doing more harm than good.”

The company’s success is based on its environmental and social commitment, Teague said, because it sets the tone of the projects. “That’s how we get the contracts, the relationships, the credibility,” he noted. “If we tried to be a conventional real estate company, we might be successful, but it would be a different kind of success.”

Teague said the company can improve in the area of materials purchasing and in their new office they can be in completely in charge of energy consumption.

“We signed up because we thought it would be an interesting challenge for ourselves,” he said. “We like metrics and evaluating ourselves. … This way the conversation is less about me nagging – the conversation comes from a more objective place.”

ind-body therapies really work to reduce stress, and by virtue of that, do reduce health care costs, according to randomized controlled pilot studies conducted in 2010 through a collaborative of insurance giant Aetna, Duke University Integrative Medicine, eMindful Inc. and American Viniyoga Institute.

According to the American Psychological Association, 43 percent of U.S. adults suffer from stress-related ailments, including reduced immunity to illness, increased risk of diabetes and weight gain. Aetna found that study participants with the highest levels of stress had higher medical costs, approximately $2000 a year, than those with less stress.

“We wanted to develop a strategy around Integrated Medicine, since 40% of U.S. adults are using these complementary therapies,” said Kyra Bobinet, M.D., MPH, the Medical Director of Health and Wellness Innovation at Aetna and the clinical director of the study. “It was intriguing because it uses the whole mind as well as the body, and that it teaches a new set of skills to self-manage [health]. There is an increased onus on the individual to be in charge of their health, so we began to investigate tools that would be effective in doing that.”

Becky Gelatt, the founder and director of Yoga School in Covington, Louisiana has trained with American Viniyoga Institute (AVI) founder Gary Kraftsow and has participated in programs at Duke Integrative Medicine. She sees mind-body practices such as yoga getting more attention in integrative medicine, but notes that medical doctors want evidence that it works – “Medical professionals needed other tools, and since a lot of people don’t want surgery or medications, they were looking at alternatives that are science-based, that doctors can … more easily offer to their patients.”

The Aetna study involved 239 Aetna employees who volunteered to participate in a mind-body stress reduction program that focused on mindfulness meditation and yoga.

Ninety-six employees were assigned to a 12-week mindfulness meditation-based online program offered by eMindful, Inc.. Participants interacted using video, audio and instant messaging or in-person instruction. eMindful instructors helped participants learn self-care, including stress-reduction techniques, work load management and strategies for prioritizing tasks and increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

Another 90 employees participated in a 12-week therapeutic yoga-based program developed by Gary Kraftsow of American Viniyoga Institute. Instruction was given for managing stress including physical yoga postures, breathing techniques, guided relaxation and mental skills. The yoga classes helped to relieve muscle tension in the back, neck and shoulders as well as improve sleep and increase feelings of well-being. Classes taught ways to use yoga as coping strategies for stressful events. Participants attended weekly in-person classes and were given handouts for home practice and yoga breaks at home and at work.

All of the participants were tested at the beginning and again at 12 weeks using instruments that detected stress, depression, insomnia and pain. Biometrics, a cardiology tool, was used to measure heart rate variability. Baseline tests were high in all areas. Bobinet offered that the high baselines could have been reflecting that the study began during a recession and the company was experiencing layoffs at the time.

The control group, which did not take any program over the 12 weeks, also showed a decrease in stress levels, but the therapeutic groups improvement was five times greater. The most significant differences were in pain, heart rate variability and blood pressure.

Gelatt said this study is important for those who have trained to become yoga therapists because it gives the field credibility. “We know this works - we know that if we go into class agitated, we usually come out of the class relaxed, but there has been no evidence-based research.”

Yoga therapists are capable of doing so much more for their clients than just helping to relieve stress, Gelatt said.

Most of them specialize in particular illnesses and learn what programs are most appropriate for those ailments. They learn the poses, breathing techniques and visualizations that help with a pinched nerve or anxiety and depression, and how to “write a prescription” for different conditions. “Yoga is a spiritual path and the other is the therapeutic benefits,” she said. “At a clinic in India, people come with conditions, and

they can’t control the mind because of pain or discomfort in a part of the body. The purpose of yoga is to eliminate suffering, and as long as mind is involved in suffering, it is not at peace.”

The pilot study is to be expanded this year to include more Aetna employees and a select number of employers that are willing to assist with the pilot.

haring water activities with your canine companion is a wonderful bonding experience, as long as you keep in mind that, as with children, you must consider a pet’s safety and comfort. While many dogs take to the water like ducks, especially retrievers, spaniels and similar breeds, others are a bit timid at first and may need some help getting used to this new experience. These 10 tips will ensure that you and your best friend can splash out in worry-free fun, whether you’re wading in a stream, going boating or visiting the beach or a lake cottage.

Before starting any new activity with your dog, it’s a smart idea to first make sure he’s in good health. If you’re in any doubt as to his fitness, have him checked by a vet.

If it will be Rover’s introduction to the water, start slowly and be patient, especially if he’s still a pup. Don’t assume he’ll automatically know how to swim. Choose a warm day and a shallow body of water, with a gently sloping beach or bank that’s easy for the dog to navigate.

Let him approach the water’s edge and investigate it in his own time. Never splash him or force him to enter the water before he’s ready.

Once caution has turned to curiosity, try enticing him into the water by entering it yourself and calling him—perhaps attracting him with a treat or by tossing a toy a short distance into the water (not so deep that his paws can’t reach the bottom). Gradually, he should feel more confident, especially if he sees you having fun, and will venture further into the water.

Take your time while introducing your dog to boating.

Keep in mind that he’s used to surfaces that are stationary and stable, so it might take him a little while to get used to a tilting and moving craft. Let him get acquainted with the boat while it’s still tied up, whether it’s a canoe, kayak or yacht.

Keep his first boat trips short and watch him for any signs of motion sickness.

Even if a dog is a seasoned swimmer, it’s a good idea to equip him with a canine life jacket or personal flotation device while you’re out on a boat. Accidents can happen, and cold, deep, choppy water can challenge even the strongest swimmer. A life jacket is a must if your dog isn’t a good swimmer; not only while he’s on a boat, but also when he’s playing in water that gets progressively deeper. Make sure

the device fits properly and allow him a chance to get used to wearing and swimming with the life jacket before taking him out over deep water.

Whether on a boat or the beach, ensure that the dog has access to good quality, fresh drinking water; maybe bring your own from home.

Make sure he has shade. Boat surfaces and beach sand can become extremely hot during sun-filled summer days, which are hard on unprotected paws; a dog’s sensitive nose and ears can get sunburned from excessive exposure, as well.

When swimming in the ocean, be aware of strong tides. Sea lice and jellyfish are other risks to watch out for.

Jellyfish can sting a curious dog, causing extreme pain and swelling, while sea lice are microscopic organisms that can cause intense itching. It’s a good idea to rinse your dog (and yourself) with fresh water after swimming in the ocean.

The biggest rule of thumb as far as safety goes is to always supervise your dog around any body of water, just as you would a child. If you have a pool, teach him how to get out of it and don’t leave behind enticing toys still floating in the water. Remember that swimming is vigorous exercise and a dog can tire quickly, especially if he’s older.

A dog may need help getting out of the water, especially when swimming off of a boat or dock, as well as in a pool. A boating harness is a good solution; available in several sizes, it’s designed for optimum mobility and should include a sturdy upright handle on the back of it to help you lift a pet out of the water.

Water activities can hugely enrich a dog’s life experience, not to mention your mutual bond of friendship. As long as you keep his safety in mind, the fun you share will give you many happy memories to look back on for years to come.

Blackberry Mint Iced Tea

Serves 8 (about 2 quarts) 5 organic black tea bags ¼ cup mint leaves, crushed; reserve one leaf per serving for garnish 4 cups boiling water ½ cup natural sugar (or use honey to taste) 6 (6-oz) packages blackberries, reserve two to three per serving for garnish Place tea bags and mint in a heatproof pitcher. Add boiling water and steep at least 10 minutes. Strain into another pitcher and discard mint and tea bags. Stir in sugar. Purée blackberries in a blender or food processor, then strain though a fine sieve. Discard pulp and seeds. Stir blackberry purée into tea. Taste and adjust sugar as desired. Chill. Serve over ice garnished with mint leaf and two or three blackberries.

Summer bummer: Poison ivy To the rescue: Homeopathic Rhus tox Urushiol—the oily sap produced by poison ivy and its cousins, poison oak and poison sumac—triggers contact dermatitis, an itchy and oozy rash.

Topical treatments can actually spread the noxious oil around; so instead, heal the rash from within. “Homeopathy works on the principle that like-cureslike,” explains Zand. “Rhus tox is homeopathic poison ivy.”

How to use: Allow two to three tablets to dissolve in your mouth every two hours until symptoms are relieved.

Summer bummer: Indigestion To the rescue: Nux vomica If you overindulged at a summertime shindig, you might turn to the classic homeopathic cure for gluttony. “Nux vomica is good if you’ve eaten too many fatty foods or had too much alcohol and the result is nausea or gas,” says Zand.

How to use: Dissolve five pellets in your mouth 20 minutes after eating and drinking, then repeat two to three times until symptoms are resolved.

Summer bummer: Sunburn To the rescue: Lavender essential oil

How to use: Take three tablets orally three to five times a day for the first 24 to 48 hours; apply topically throughout the day. Note: Never apply arnica to an open wound.

Summer bummer: Athlete’s foot To the rescue: Grapefruit seed extract “Compounds found in the inner rind and seeds of grapefruits have shown potent anti-fungal activity,” notes Marrone. “They attack the cell wall of fungi and prevent replication when applied topically.”

How to use: Add 10 to 15 drops of organic grapefruit seed extract to a tablespoon of water and apply with a cotton swab to the affected areas twice daily.

Summer bummers: Bites, stings and cuts To the rescue: Hydrogen peroxide, yarrow tincture and latex-free bandages “First, clean the bite, sting or cut with hydrogen peroxide,” advises Flint.

“Then follow with a few drops of yarrow tincture, which acts as an astringent to pull the tissue together. It’s safe to use on open wounds.”

How to use: Douse the affected areas with peroxide, then apply six to 12 drops of yarrow tincture.
