letterfrompublisher “Creation is a drug I can’t do without.” ~Cecil B. DeMille

C

reative expression is vital to our individual and collective wellbeing. Yet, how often do we hear someone say, “I’m just not creative.” The fact is that, by our very nature, everyone is creative; some just don’t give themselves opportunities to express it, while others may not recognize their activities as creative endeavors, perhaps because they come so naturally. Neuroscientists have studied how doing creative work with our hands affects our brain chemistry. I wonder if the “drug” DeMille opined about is actually the calming serotonin hormone released by the brain when we do something that feeds our wellbeing. Judith Fertig explores the phenomenon in “Creative Therapy” on page 21. I love that children rarely doubt their creative nature. They simply dive into the process, and we can do the same. A few years ago, I participated in a yoga retreat where one of the meditations involved silently coloring in a design template with pastel pencils. The point of the activity was to provide a focus. Yet, what kept this group of adults focused was the creative process. It was fun to see how we each produced such artfully different works solely through our choice of colors. There was no sense of competition. It was a lovely way to end the day. No doubt we were all benefiting from a boost of serotonin production that day. Southeast Louisiana has long been a Mecca for artists, writers, musicians, chefs and craft folks. Now, it’s attracting a new breed of social artists. Check them out at “Green Inspirations: Local Artists and Crafters Create Sustainably,” on page 19. From furniture to clothing and accessories, these entrepreneurs demonstrate the rewarding possibilities in reusing and repurposing materials to produce appealing high quality goods that enable them to make a living doing what they love. Did you know that Yoga Journal recently ranked New Orleans among the top 10 yoga-friendly cities in the country? Sweet! In “On the Mat in the Big Easy,” on page 17, Linda Michurski highlights some local yoga offerings. You’ll also find a list of local yoga studios on page 16. Beginner yogis and yoginis as well as more advanced practitioners will appreciate Natural Awakenings’ Yoga Guide, which explains the variety of yoga styles and traditions (page 14). We hope that these resources help you find the best fit for you and that you give one a try. We’re also a big fan of the 2012 Water Challenge sponsored by The Idea Village and the Greater New Orleans Foundation, aimed to grow local entrepreneurs involved in developing water management solutions that work for our state and beyond. As much as any place on the planet, southeast Louisiana knows the ravages of too much and too little water. Winning applicants could be awarded up to $50,000. So get those creative juices going. Steve Picou, LSU AgCenter’s agent for sustainable housing shares the skinny on the contest on page 12. Here’s to joy in creative work and play,

ecky Gelatt at Yoga School, LLC in Covington and a team of yoga therapists in training will be offering yoga therapy to individuals suffering from Parkinson’s, beginning in September 2011. Why Structural Integration?

J

ohn Calhoun, a licensed massage therapist and certified Structural Integration practitioner, will explain this specialized form of bodywork in a free presentation entitled “Why Structural Integration?” on Thursday, September 22 at the Street University of the New Orleans Healing Center at 7:30 p.m.. The center is located at 2372 St. Claude Ave. in the Bywater. Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that works with the connective tissue to bring the body into structural alignment. Calhoun, who recently opened an office in Mid-City, trained at the Guild for Structural Integration on the island of Kauai after working for several years as a practicing massage therapist. Instead of fighting symptoms, Structural Integration is a practice meant to bring greater order into the body, and therefore deep and lasting change. Clients who have suffered from back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches, and joint problems implement Structural Integration so they can live a life of greater ease and joy. Can Turn Depression Around

A

recent study published in the online edition of The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reveals that more than 2 million people age 65 and older suffer from depression, including 50 percent of nursing home residents. In seeking an alternative to aggressive drug treatments, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), turned to a gentle, westernized version of Tai chi, a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial art. During the study, 112 adults age 60 or older that had been diagnosed with major depression were treated with a standard antidepressant drug for four weeks. The 73 adults that showed only partial improvement continued to receive the medication, but were also assigned to 10 weeks of either Tai chi or health education classes. The group practicing Tai chi experienced greater improvement in their levels of depression, as well as an enhanced quality of life, better cognition and more overall energy than the nonpracticing group. Dr. Helen Lavretsky, the study’s first author and a UCLA professor-in-residence of psychiatry, says, “This study shows that adding a mind-body exercise like Tai chi, that is widely available in the community, can improve the outcomes of treating depression in older adults that may also have other, coexisting medical conditions or cognitive impairment. With Tai chi, we may be able to treat these conditions without exposing them to additional medications.”

Living Abroad Boosts Creativity

S

tudents that have lived abroad appear to be more creative than peers that haven’t had such an experience, according to a study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Enhanced creativity was linked directly to the students’ open-minded approach in adapting to a new culture in another country. Results indicated that multicultural learning is a critical component of the adaptation process, which acts as a catalyst for creativity.

Benefit-Boosting Broccoli Sprouts

B

roccoli has become a gold medal contender among vegetables, so how often should we eat it to reap all of its health benefits? Elizabeth Jeffery, a University of Illinois professor of nutritional sciences, explains: “Broccoli, prepared correctly, is an extremely potent cancer-fighting agent—three to five servings a week are enough to have an effect. To get broccoli’s benefits, though, the enzyme myrosinase has to be present; if not, sulforaphane, broccoli’s cancerpreventive and anti-inflammatory component, doesn’t form.” According to Jeffery, myrosinase is often destroyed by overcooking. Health-conscious consumers that use broccoli powder supplements in recipes to boost their nutrition also are missing out, she says, because the supplements often do not contain the needed enzyme. A solution: Jeffery suggests incorporating fresh broccoli sprouts into our diet. Available at most grocery and health food stores, the sprouts contain abundant myrosinase.

communityAnnouncement The 2012 Water Challenge: Nurturing Local Entrepreneurs in Water Management By Steve Picou

I

f you could invent the ultimate water business, what would it be? After all, this is Louisiana, and water is a big deal here. Billions of dollars are committed to protecting us, restoring our coast and managing our water resources. That translates into entrepreneurial opportunities with global possibilities. Here in Southeast Louisiana, we have the experience, the expertise and the resources to be world leaders in water-related industries. Do you have a water-related business or an idea in need of development? Then consider the 2012 Water Challenge. For the second year in a row, the Greater New Orleans Foundation and The Idea Village seek to develop the best entrepreneurial ideas for water via the 2012 Water Challenge, a business competition with a prize of up to $50,000 of investment capital to help a business in Southeast Louisiana grow. The application process is underway and closes October 3. Businesses must be located in Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John, St. Tammany, or Terrebonne parishes. Eight entrepreneurs will be announced on October 19 to participate in a six-month accelerator program at The Idea

Village, where they will work with business mentors to help them identify and address key growth challenges. During the annual New Orleans Entrepreneur Week in March 2012, they will pitch their business ideas before a panel of judges and an audience to determine the winner. The 2012 Water Challenge is focused on nurturing entrepreneurs working on high-growth ventures in the water industry. A priority in this year’s competition is finding entrepreneurs working on innovative solutions in flood management. Additionally, businesses that address water issues such as wastewater, efficiency, quality, monitoring, infrastructure, storm water, restoration, and other aspects are eligible to apply. All ideas will be reviewed with an emphasis on integrated water management strategies that work in harmony with natural systems and which help us live with water. The 2011 Water Challenge attracted nearly two dozen entrepreneurs with business ideas ranging from innovative storm water management to hydropower. The winner, NanoFex, developed a product that de-contaminates groundwater polluted by industrial solvents. For the 2012 Water Challenge, at least one of the final slots will be reserved for a business working on flood management solutions. The world faces many challenges involving water. Pollution, sea-level rise, flooding, scarcity, and lack of proper sanitation impact billions of people and cause the untimely death of millions annually. Solutions developed by Louisiana entrepreneurs thus have the potential to save lives around the world, while providing greater economic security here at home. Water is important to everything we do. It is both a threat and an asset. Our water resources are highways of commerce, circulatory systems of our rich environment, and the lifeblood of our economy and cultures. Water is why we are here now and why New Orleans will be here in the future. South Louisiana’s water abundance, combined with our experiences with disasters, positions us to be leaders in global efforts to manage this fragile-but-powerful resource. The 2012 Water Challenge is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to test their ideas and grow them into more viable businesses that help our state become a world leader in water. During New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, those ideas will be showcased, studied and judged. And someone will get the chance to change the world. So, what’s your big water idea? YOGA GUIDE

ANANDA: A form of gentle Hatha yoga with an emphasis on meditation. Ananda combines classic yoga postures with breathing and silent affirmations to attune with higher levels of body sense, energy and silent inner awareness. As an inner-directed practice, it has less appeal to those desiring a more athletic or aerobic experience. ANUSARA: Anusara means “go with the flow,” and blends spirituality with inner/ outer alignment and balanced energetic actions. Developed by John Friend in 1997, this style urges students to think of poses as artistic expressions of the heart. Individual abilities and limitations are deeply respected and honored, so Anusara yoga can be helpful for everyone and is good for beginners.

Y

oga, a holistic art and practice that originated some 5,000 years ago in India, aims to integrate mind, body and spirit. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or unite, and refers to the joining of body with mind and mind with soul to achieve health, balance, tranquility and enlightenment. Individuals of every age and physical condition can benefit from the regular practice of yoga, which has been proved to enhance flexibility, strength, stamina and concentration. Using a combination of asanas, or postures, and breathing techniques, yoga works to induce deep

relaxation and reduce stress, tone the body and organs, increase vitality and improve circulation and energy flow. Uplifting and meditative, yoga can be applied as a spiritual practice, as well. Although many schools, or styles, of yoga exist, most differences derive from the primary focus of the practitioner’s attention: precise alignment of the body; holding of the asanas; flow between the postures; breath and movement coordination; or inner awareness and meditation. No particular style is better than another, and many students practice more than one.

ASHTANGA: A physically demanding style that is light on meditation, Ashtanga yoga employs a fast-paced series of flowing poses to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga’s progressively difficult postures are synchronized with a loud breath (called Ujyaii breath in Sanskrit) and are designed to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat in order to detoxify muscles and organs. The room is usually heated to warm muscles and increase flexibility. Preferred by many athletes, this style is too intense and demanding for most beginners. BIKRAM: A strenuous style, designed to make students sweat, taught in rooms heated to a minimum of 105º Fahrenheit, with about 40 percent humidity. The superheated rooms facilitate stretching and allow the body to release toxins through perspiration. Former national India yoga champion Bikram Choudhury developed the style, whose 26 demanding poses are performed in a specific order, to promote optimal health and proper function of every bodily system. Bikram yoga is a good choice for highly fit individuals and seasoned students seeking a challenge. HATHA: Hatha yoga is the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles

advertising@nolahealthyliving.com are based. In Sanskrit, ha represents the sun and tha, the moon—hence, the practice is designed to bring the yin and yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine aspects and polarities into balance. Essentially, Hatha yoga brings all aspects of life together. A class described as hatha will likely include slow-paced stretching, asanas, or postures, that are not too difficult, simple breathing exercises and perhaps, seated meditation. Hatha yoga classes provide a good starting point for beginners, who can learn basic poses and relaxation techniques. INTEGRAL: A gentle style of yoga brought to this country in 1966 by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Classes are structured to balance physical effort with relaxation and include breathing practices, chanting and both guided and silent meditation. Integral yoga is suitable for beginners and helpful for more advanced students who wish to deepen their physical and spiritual awareness. INTEGRATIVE YOGA THERAPY: Gentle postures, guided imagery, assisted stretching and breathwork help to make this style a useful one for rehab centers and hospitals. Joseph LePage began this therapy in the early 1990s to help promote healing and well-being for individuals facing heart disease, cancer, AIDS and psychiatric disorders. IYENGAR: Noted for precise alignment and symmetry of postures, the development of balance, and the use of props such as blocks, balls and belts. The Iyengar style of yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, based on an exceptional understanding of how the body works. Poses are held longer than usual. Iyengar is a good style for beginners, but can challenge seasoned practitioners, as well. KRIPALU: An integrated practice that emphasizes breathing and alignment and coordinates the breath with movement. Kripalu, also called the yoga of consciousness, was developed by Amrit Desai, a long time student of Kundalini yoga master Swami Kripaluvananda. yoga techniques with contemporary psychology, which ultimately results in the healing of mind, body and spirit. POWER: An intense style that creates heat and energy, while developing strength and flexibility. Power yoga evolved from ashtanga yoga and was developed by American Beryl Bender Birch in the early 1990s. Its flowing style requires the strength and stamina of Ashtanga, but doesn’t always follow the same sequence of postures, making it similar to Vinyasa style. Power yoga is usually performed in a heated room. Although Baron Baptiste is a name often associated with power yoga, he has developed his own method, called Baptiste Power Vinyasa yoga, which is taught only by teachers he certifies. Students that enjoy aerobics will probably favor power yoga. SIVANANDA: Cultivates awareness of mind and body by incorporating five main principles of proper exercise, breathing, relaxation and diet, as well as positive thinking and meditation. Based on the philosophy of Swami Sivananda, of India, the practice uses chanting, breathing techniques and meditation to help unblock energy and release stress. Sivananda focuses on 12 basic yoga postures to increase strength and spinal flexibility. It is an excellent practice for beginners, those recovering from injury or anyone interested in spiritual aspects of yoga. SVAROOPA: A style that helps each student discover their bliss. The Sanskrit word svaroopa means “the true nature of being,” and Svaroopa yoga is sometimes called the yoga of alignment and compassion. Attention to alignment in specifically chosen poses helps to soften the body’s connective tissues and ease spinal tension. Blocks and bolsters may be used to allow for deeper muscle release. The style is suitable for beginners and useful for those recovering from injury. VINYASA: A challenging style that matches breath to movement. Vinyasa yoga poses incorporate alignment

principles and are woven together in a flowing practice that is both intense and dance-like. Translated from Sanskrit, vinyasa means “without obstacle.” The style is best suited to energetic, physically fit students. VINIYOGA: A transformative, slower and more individualized form of yoga that emphasizes gentle flow and coordinated breath with movement. Viniyoga yoga is holistic in its approach and teaches the student how to apply the yoga tools of poses, chanting, breathing and meditation. Function is stressed over form in this style. Viniyoga is recommended for beginners and seniors, as well as those who are in chronic pain or healing from injury or disease. ew Orleans is known for beignets, etouffee, po’boys, and now yoga? That’s right. New Orleans was recently named one of the top ten yoga-friendly towns in the country by Yoga Journal magazine. Amidst the streetcars, the music, and the festivals, a place to quiet the mind can be found in one of the many unique yoga studios in the Greater New Orleans area. Yoga studios flourish from Uptown to Downtown, to the North and South shores of Lake Pontchartrain, offering a smorgasboard of yoga styles ranging from the very spiritual to more physical based approaches. New Orleans is all about community these days. In fact, many studios offer ‘community’ classes, meaning classes by donation. Swan River Yoga, started 13 years ago in co-owner Michele Baker’s living room and now in four locations around the area, offers classes at the studio in Arabi totally on a donation basis. As Baker expressed it, the primary goal of a yogi is serving the community. Baker describes her own style of teaching as Anasara inspired influenced by a Jivamukti flow, a safe flowing movement emphasizing proper alignment. Her classes typically include a spiritual lesson combined with asanas

(poses), chanting and meditation. Jessica Blanchard and Cheryl Golich, co-owners of Balance Yoga opened their studio in Mid-City this past January. Classes vary from beginning to intermediate, and pre-natal to restorative. Ayurvedic consultations are available with Blanchard. Golich says there is a reason that New Orleans was recently voted one of the friendliest places to do yoga. There isn’t competition among studios here. They all work together and support one another. Her own yoga philosophy is about challenging one’s self in a mindful, conscious manner; realizing what life has given you right now and asking yourself, “What you are going to do with it?” Yoga is about “nourishing your soul,” she says, “changing your life in a positive way.” Balance Yoga offers private yoga therapy and massage as well as a beginner’s

immersion weekend to help students get started. Founder of Freret Street Yoga, Geoffrey Roniger, discovered yoga at age 19 when his mother and girlfriend, who is now his wife, invited him to his first yoga class. He admitted that the experience was life changing. The class seemed so familiar to him he exclaimed, “It felt like a homecoming to me.” Since then he has apprenticed with such well-known yoga teachers as Richard Rosen and Rodney Yee. While at the Yoga Loft in San Francisco he served as a teacher trainer and created a program called Workplace Wellness, which focuses on breath and basic poses ‘to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day at a desk’. Roniger believes that “yoga is about balance, a blend between alignment and movement.” He emphasizes that yoga is a “self care system,” a way to monitor and take control of our own health and welfare. He believes yoga to be a longterm sustainable therapy, which is why

he thoroughly enjoys teaching beginning students. In Covington, Becky Gelatt is synonymous with yoga; known as a seasoned and respected yoga teacher of over 30 years, and the founder of the 21 year old Yoga School LLC. While Yoga School offers some public classes in the evenings, Gelatt is primarily occupied with yoga teacher training as well as private and small therapeutic yoga classes.

Trained in both the Iyengar tradition and Viniyoga, she believes that combining the two makes the practice easier to adapt to each unique individual. When asked about her philosophy she explained that yoga is about “Growing older with grace, dignity, enthusiasm and excitement.” A lot of her students are seniors. One 88 year old student has been one of her students for over 25 years. Gelatt integrates adaptive therapeutic yoga into her teacher training program. Several of her graduates are currently working at hospitals where they introduce yoga to people living with cancer. In September, Yoga School is offering a class for people with Parkinson’s disease. Gelatt was recently approved to offer a Yoga Therapy certification course. Wild Lotus Yoga, founded by Sean Johnson, is located in uptown and the new downtown location at the New Orleans Healing Center. Wild Lotus is a family of teachers trained in a wide variety of yoga traditions, committed to sharing yoga that “opens the heart, awakening physical, emotional, mental and spiritual awareness.” The atmosphere is warm and welcoming avoiding dogma and self-righteousness. Music is one of Johnson’s greatest passions, so it’s no surprise his classes include kirtan chanting with music, meditation, poetry and a gentle vinyasa

flow. He is most interested in how “yoga practice can help inspire and motivate the way we live our lives off the mat.” Classes have a strong emphasis on savasana, the deeply rejuvenating period of rest at the end of each class. Soul School, Wild Lotus Yoga’s Teacher Training Program, includes a line-up of intriguing topics such as: spiritual practice, selfexploration, mantra and chanting, music and dance, mythology, poetry, Buddhism, and Tantra, just to name a few. Yogini Elizabeth Eckman holds daily morning community classes 364 days out of the year at Divine Kundalini Yoga Studio in Central City. Following a New Orleans tradition, she is closed one very important day, Mardi Gras. Eckman’s classes are casual and welcoming. In class she emphasizes therapeutic yoga while informing students of the benefits of each pose as they are doing them. After class students are often treated to Eckman’s fresh homemade bread and lemon water. Recent Divine Kundalini school graduate Twila Hoyle, defines the kundalini practice as a science; working from the seven chakras through breath, asanas, chanting and meditation. Kundalini yoga involves holding poses for long periods of time. It’s about patience and stillness. Twila exclaims, “People don’t spend enough time being still. It helps you get in touch with your inner consciousness.” Divine Kundalini offers teaching trainings, and recently opened up a second studio just around the corner with beautiful hardwood floors and lots of natural light infused through the room. September is national yoga month, so get out of the house, out of the office and on to the mat. Don’t forget to breathe. Green Inspirations

Local Artists and Crafters Create Sustainably by Colleen Morgan

M

allory Whitfield has always had a passion for two things: crafts and the environment. As a child she organized the kids in her neighborhood into an environmental group. She learned how to sew in high school and never turned back. Now, naturally, she uses recycled materials and turns them into clothes – and promotes others that do similar work.

Otherwise known as Miss Malaprop, the Gulfport native has found her niche in New Orleans – one that fits this quirky city well. In fact, this entrepreneurial enclave has offered many creative souls a shot at doing what they love for a living. For some that means making furniture from salvaged wood, creating light fixtures from Mardi Gras beads, or designing clothes from coffee sacks and FEMA tarps.

Craftily Repurposed Clothes and Accessories

Whitfield, who is self-taught in sewing and design claims the materials inspire her work. She has won awards for her FEMA tarp dress and a madcap creation that came out of a trash bag for a contest honoring Mardi Gras Indians. She recalls endless sequins painstakingly hand-sewed for that piece. Another creative crafter, Traci Claussen, transitioned from radio to repurposing after she moved into a loft in New Orleans’ Central Business District, which she proceeded to reconstruct with salvaged and found materials. After that masterpiece, one day while at a coffee shop, it dawned on her that coffee bags must be a dime a dozen, food grade and durable. The beach/ grocery tote, finished with belts from Bridge house, a thrift store benefitting the homeless, soon morphed into duffle bags, backpacks and the “weekender” popularized by Country Living magazine. Her new makeup bags, made with the canvas used by Mardi Gras Indians, are emblazoned with the motto “Be cool; do good.” Repurposing NOLA, Claussen’s company, also offers garments – bamboo-embossed drapes tossed out by the Hilton Hotel are now pants, and remnants from Hancock Fabrics

have become James Bond-style dresses. “I try not to waste anything,” she said. “Everything I make is one of a kind, and there is a little bit of New Orleans in each one.” Kendra Morris of Bonga Chop Designs transforms old bed sheets into dresses and other garments, including baby clothes. She has her creations at the art markets and in several shops, but most of her work is custom, since word has spread that she reincarnates the Rainbow Bright or Smurf sheets hidden in the closet into something usable and fun. In her three and a half years of sewing she has also worked with almost every kind of fabric, including antique tablecloths, doilies and curtains. “My customers have nostalgia…and I spend time making [the products] really high quality. If people make a change to buy things higher in quality, then they are more special to them. People that buy all of these throw away items don’t understand how much work goes into them.” Morris muses “There has been a turn in society to be more eco-friendly – I

Trash to Treasures

Heather Macfarlane of Unique Products (UP) has always been a “crafty person and a recycler,” and when she met Mark Kirk, they stepped it up a notch. “We started doing lighting out of melted Mardi Gras beads or detergent bottles – anything we could shove a bulb into,” she said. They opened their store in 1999, upstairs from a vintage clothing store, and they now do custom work in bars and restaurants. “Living in New Orleans is very inspirational,” she said of the materials they find, such as discarded Jazz Fest banners she just received. Dumpster diving and treasure hunting has garnered them materials that would make archeologists squeal. “There is always plenty of trash to dig through … a treasure trove of costumes and beads.” Macfarlane teaches her art to others at workshops and art camps for kids.

material is collected. He then transforms it and sells it across the country through the online crafts market Esty. The New Jersey and Vermont native also barters with other carpenters for material, and has made some furniture for stores and offices. Paul Troyano, whose company is called Living Furniture, also makes furniture using salvaged wood and wood from trees that have fallen and air dried for years. A distinctive feature of his designs is the dearth of straight lines. “My tables have curvy legs,” he said. “I like the idea of imitating nature, and there is nothing straight in nature. Every table is slightly different. I don’t waste a lot of wood by carving something out.” Troyano creates other wood products, such as utensils, cutting boards and clocks, and he also repairs furniture. Most importantly, he uses local, salvaged wood and keeps scraps from becoming mulch. “I try to be as green as possible,” he said, noting that it cuts down costs and is good for the planet. At least in New Orleans, innovation doesn’t happen just in the labs of research facilities and on drafting tables of engineers. It happens around dumpsters, festivals, abandoned buildings and Mardi Gras parades.

CREATIVE THERAPY “The hand is the window on to the mind.” ~ Immanuel Kant by Judith Fertig

O

f all our limbs, explains Professor Richard Sennett, “the hands make the most varied movements, movements that can be controlled at will. Science has sought to show how these motions, plus the hand’s different ways of gripping and the sense of touch, affect the ways we think.” Sennett expounds at length on this topic in his book, The Craftsman, and teaches sociology at New York University and The London School of Economics and Political Science. He explains that making things by hand engages the brain in special ways. The furniture maker, the musician, the glassblower or any other person engaged mindfully in arts and crafts needs to first “localize,” or look at just what is there—a piece of wood, a musical instrument or melted glass. The second step is to question—“What can I do with this?” The

third is to open up—figure out how to create something unique. “To deploy these capabilities, the brain needs to process visual, aural, tactile and language-symbol information simultaneously,” says Sennett. Working pleasurably with the hands also helps to enhance brain chemistry according to author Kelly Lambert, Ph.D., a psychology professor and lead researcher with the Lambert Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory at Randolph-Macon College, in Ashland, Virginia. Lambert, author of Lifting Depression: A Neuroscientist’s Approach to Activating Your Brain’s Healing Power, makes the case for hands-on crafts like gardening, cooking and knitting as antidotes to depression. In a “Reconsidering Crafts” segment on Wisconsin Public Radio, she remarked: “We’re still carrying around a brain

that appreciates working in the dirt and planting and hunting and preparing food.” Using both hands to do something enjoyable, like knitting a scarf, entails engaging in a repetitive motion that produces calming serotonin. Lambert adds that counting stitches distracts us from other worries or concerns, and knitting something that we find pleasing and seeing the process through to completion activates what she refers to as the effort-driven reward circuit in the brain. This further prompts the release of the feel-good brain chemicals dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, she adds.

Th e o r g a n i z a t i o n i s a l s o democratically controlled, she said, with a mission to make a difference in the community. The member-owners expect NOFC to be a sustainable market, she said. Approximately 1,600 people have joined the co-op because of its mission, so the plan is to compile data that illustrates the economic implications of that commitment and others. “We are always looking for ways to green our business and we need our community’s support,” Burge said. Global Green’s New Orleans office and Green Building Resource Center was founded after Hurricane Katrina “to create something positive after the disaster,” Program and Operations Director Linda Stone said. “The idea was to help build capacity in the area of green building.” The staff advocates, educates and facilitates energy efficiency projects, Stone said, conducting energy assessments and weatherization of homes, among other

services. Clients seeking to reduce their utility bills get technical assistance free of charge. The new NOLA Wise program offers low interest loans to qualified residents for energy efficient upgrades. It was natural for Global Green to sign up for Green Games, she said, and it helped to support Life City as it creates a standard for sustainable businesses. “It helps to further our mission by reaching out to community and to be more efficient at the same time,” she said. “It is a great deal.”

New Orleans

Chamber of Commerce

New Orleans Chamber of Commerce Green Committee

T

he New Orleans Chamber of Commerce is a young organization, only four years old. But despite Hurricane Katrina, the membership is up to 550 now, President and CEO Ben Johnson said, partly because the monthly evening events and quarterly luncheons offer networking opportunities and speakers on critical topics. The Chamber’s five new committees include a Green Committee focused on sustainable economic development, which Johnson said is predicted to add 90,000 jobs in Southeast Louisiana in the next 10 years. “ We wa n t t o c o m m e rc i a l i z e sustainable rebuilding,” Johnson said. “We want to brand the New Orleans region as a place that … values best practices related to environmental sensitivity and using green products.” New Orleans is rated second in the country for relocating businesses, first for graduating college students, and has become a place where sustainable businesses can make a profit, Johnson said. The Chamber can help promote that: “We can lead by example.”

Participating in the Green Games was a response to the membership’s overwhelming interest, Johnson said, noting that 200 people came to a recent “green” themed event. “This movement is going at lightning speed,” he said about jumping on board. “It also sounded like a lot of fun!”

Big Apple 2 Big Easy Bartending

B

ig Apple 2 Big Easy Bartending LLC provides bartending services, party planning, “tools” for a successful party, and “dazzling displays,” said owner Traci Salisbury. But BA2BE’s services are basic - “no frills, cut and dry, yet cutting edge,” she said. A year ago, the only option was to use a catering company, which is complicated and costly. A bartender adds “an air of charm and style,” Salisbury said, and it is inherently green because it is mobile, has limited overhead, and is almost paperless. Salisbury created a “green party package” because people “tend to slack on their eco-friendly tendencies” when they party. This package includes tips on holding a sustainable party and a shopping list with “green” items, from biodegradable trash bags and soy candles to local beer and organic vodka. “By helping our clients stay green as they party, we increase our value, provide them a great service, and all have peace of mind knowing we are doing the best we can.” The Green Games will help her to improve and market her green package. She hopes LifeCity can help her change the face of the service industry “and to attract a new, sustainable group of partiers.”

Eco-Fashionista Summer Rayne Oakes Models the Future by Kristin J. Bender

Fashion model Summer Rayne Oakes has created a growing platform for taking eco-fashion mainstream. She’s seen firsthand how a more sustainable lifestyle can start with something as simple as choosing certified organic lip balm or a pair of shoes made from organic cotton and recycled rubber.

B

ecause of her close ties to environmental causes, Oakes is known as “The eco-model.” The title seems to fit her well: She has put her name behind many cause-related programs, including a skincare company that uses active natural ingredients and a maker of recycled eyewear that plants a tree for every pair of frames sold. She didn’t set out to be the eco-fashionista. Oakes, whose first name derived from being born, she states, on a “rainy summer day,” was raised amid Pennsylvania farmlands north of Scranton and developed a love of nature from an early age. By 13, she was the youngest member of her hometown’s environmental advisory council and after high school, went off to Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resources and entomology. While researching toxins in sewage sludge and identifying aquatic insects, the 5-foot, 10inch, willowy brunette also began modeling while at college, and 24

conceived the idea that the fashion industry might be the right forum for her to take a leading role in expanding environmental awareness. Her first venture, Organic Portraits, an avantgarde photography project, brought to life sustainable design and conservation in one package.

Runaway Success Armed with brains, beauty and an affinity with the natural world, Oakes signed with her first modeling agency after graduating. Today, at 27, she has built her own brand as a business consultant and spokeswoman, author and entrepreneur in the multibillion-dollar industry of environmentally friendly apparel and home products. Oakes says that being in nature is what makes her come to life. “I carry that with me through all of my work in the fashion industry. It keeps me incredibly grounded and gives me an opportunity to work with companies and organizations that mirror my values or operate in the spirit of becoming better stewards,” she says. Oakes is as appealing as the products she represents. In addition to her creative input, she has put her stamp of approval on both Portico Home + Spa linens and bath products and Payless ShoeSource’s zoe&zac line of shoes and handbags. Oakes also is working with Modo on a collection of recycled eyewear under its Eco brand, which she notes will be tied in with some of her personal reforestation and sustainable design projects worldwide. Her work with Aveeno on its Be An Active Natural Campaign supports the message that small changes can add up to a big difference. She sometimes blogs about her experiences at SummerRayne.net; a recent post explained how she chooses which Earth-friendly companies she’ll support. “An engaging partnership is a critical component for me to [be] a spokesperson,” she writes. “On countless occasions, I have had to turn down offers if the partnership didn’t seem suitable. But how exciting it is to find brands that are ready to step up to the challenge and have the spirit, resources and energy to make meaningful change happen from the inside out.”

Eco-Fashion Trends

Oakes’ timing in applying her passions and skills to the green and clean marketplace is apt. Global retail sales of organic cotton apparel and home textile products reached an estimated $4.3 billion in 2009, up 35 percent over the year before, according to the latest research from Organic Exchange’s Organic Cotton Market Report, and the market is expected to continue to grow. Organic Exchange projected a 20 to 40 percent jump in both 2010 and 2011, which could result in a $6 billion

market this year. Oakes supports the industry via Source4Style.com, a forum she recently co-founded to connect designers with sustainable material suppliers from around the world. A finalist for the prestigious Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards, it already has been frequented by the likes of fashion designer Christian Siriano. Oakes is not alone—other celebrities and designers like Bono, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood have added their voices in raising awareness of the importance of socially and environmentally conscious fashion. Oakes has modeled for such industry giants as Levi Strauss, Payless, Replay Jeans and others, but her activism and modeling have also allowed her to branch out into other industries. She says that her bestselling book, Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty, is aimed at, “... women that love style, but may not have ‘environment’ in their lexicon,” and serves as, “an irreverent, witty guide for green virgins.” “Sustainable design will continue to evolve,” she says. “Ten years ago, there were only a handful of designers operating in the industry. Now, most companies are asking how it can be authentically built into the core of their business.” How will that happen? “First, they have to believe and embody it.”

Why this approach?

n spite of our “compartmental training”, the reality is that the body is not compartmentalized.

T

hings that happen throughout the body may affect our oral health and vice versa. The same blood that flows through the kidneys, heart, and lungs flows through our teeth and gums.

To be truly healthy, we must have healthy teeth and gums and a harmonious chewing system.

Green Chic Earth-Friendly, Feel-Good Fabrics

I

nnovation is shaping every facet of the eco-fashion industry—from organic crop standards, energy-efficient production, local sourcing, community reinvesting and fair trade, to the recycling of excess fabric and other materials and repurposing used garments. Yet, half of all textile fibers still come from conventional cotton, which soaks up a quarter of all agrochemicals and insecticides sprayed on the planet, reports Paul Hawken in Natural Capitalism – Creating the Next Industrial Revolution. Cotton also requires 2,600 gallons of water for every pound grown. Other natural fabric plant fibers are much less resource-intensive. Here are some clues about what to look for.

fibers, like cotton and silk.

BAMBOO: This versatile and selfreplenishing grass yields a luxuriously soft fabric.

ORGANIC COTTON: U.S. organic cotton planting was up 12 percent in 2010 over 2009, from 10,521 to 11,827 acres, according to the Organic Trade Association. Farmers

JUSI and PIÑA: Jusi comes from banana silk. Piña is made from pineapple leaves. Both textiles originated in the Philippines. KENAF: From hibiscus grown in Asia and Africa, kenaf blends well with other fibers. It feels similar to hemp or jute. LINEN: A classic material derived from the flax plant, linen won’t stick to skin and dries quickly. LYOCELL: Includes a range of soft fabrics comprised of cellulose fibers, but is still subjected to chemical processing such as bleaching. It has cotton-like characteristics. Also known as Tencel, seacell (using seaweed) or modal (from beechwood pulp).

RAMIE: Made from a flowering, woody plant in the nettle family, the fibrous texture feels softest when blended with organic cotton or wool. It has linenlike characteristics, such as durability. RECYCLED POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE (PET): Gives new purpose to used plastic bottles or old polyester clothing. Appears in fleecelike fabrics and is also reincarnated in the soles of shoes. SILK: Silk delivers elegant effects when used alone or combined with other fibers.
