letter from the publisher am so excited to announce my next project. This month I am opening KICK, New Orleans’ newest boutique kickboxing studio in the heart of Freret Street in Uptown NOLA. It has been a very long road with far more bumps than I anticipated, but it is finally here! For years now I wanted to take kickboxing. I loved to box, and that was the best workout I had ever experienced so I wanted to take it to the next level. Kickboxing sounded so cool—I could be my own action hero and had visions of Lara Croft dancing in my head. Strong, sexy, fierce. However, after looking around, I had trouble finding any good options here in the city. I began to take martial arts and continued my boxing training. I was kicking in one place in Metairie and boxing in another in Central City, and I just wanted to kick and box at the same time, in the same place! I started to train with a kickboxing coach, but private lessons were growing to be expensive. I really wanted the opportunity to take a class with others and loved the feeling of community when doing other group fitness classes. I thought that I was probably not the only one that was looking for this in NOLA. Then the entity began to take on a different meaning. Empowerment. There is something about wrapping your hands, putting on those gloves, and hitting a bag that made me feel strong. Unstoppable. And I knew whom I wanted to share that feeling with. As a single Mom and a female business owner here in New Orleans, I

have always felt a special bond with the women in my community. I was going to do this for them—for the women in our city. I was going to create a studio that allowed the women of New Orleans to have a place they can go to feel that sisterhood and to feel the empowerment that comes with this workout. I wanted them to feel stronger not only physically, but in all aspects of their life—to stand taller, with confidence, and be the best versions of themselves, so I created a studio and a workout that catered to them. So, ladies, this one’s for you. KICK is the biggest project I have embarked upon yet, and, honestly, it has not been an easy road to make it a reality. But I was never going to stop fighting for it, and I will never stop fighting for you. For a place where you can leave the world at the door, or bring it in and kick its ass. A place for you to have a moment for yourselves, to be KICK strong. You deserve this. And I cannot wait to see you all there. Come kick it with us and be a part of our KICK Krewe!

LET’S GET FUNCTIONAL If you’ve been around a gym or have that one annoying friend who feels the need to share every detail of their interesting and incredible fitness journey with you, you most likely are familiar with the term “functional training.” Functional seems to be a catchword that gets tossed around to justify certain training styles. So, it begs the question, what does it mean to train functionally? And no Karen it is not performing a balancing act on a Bosu ball with one leg while doing a bicep curl with the right arm and a

shoulder press with the left. People often mistake randomness for functional and this could not be further from the truth. Functional training is anything that gets you better at life and makes you a better FUNCTIONING Homo Sapien. Novelty does not necessarily imply functionality. Note: Always train safe. If you cannot do a certain movement do not try to be a hero and do it anyway. Stay safe.
HERE IS A BETTER REPRESENTATION OF FUNCTIONAL TRAINING: -Squat -Deadlift -Vertical Push/Pull (i.e. Pullup variation) -Horizontal Push/Pull (i.e. Pushup variation) -Lunge or Step-up -CARRY! Pick up something and walk with it. Grab two dumbbells and walk for 30-60 seconds. -Front Planks and Side Planks.
If you challenge yourself with these movements and don’t take 30 text breaks every workout you will improve your body composition and become a better functioning human being. Activities like playing with your kids, bringing in the groceries, walking around an amusement park, and all the other wonderful things that make up your day will seem easier and more enjoyable. Most importantly, your body will be healthier. Functional training does not mean chaotic training. Train with a purpose. Train smarter. We only have one body. Let’s train smarter to make it stronger. •

NEW ORLEANS BOULDER LOUNGE | With its opening in 2015, the NOBL has created a gathering space for those focused on a healthy and active lifestyle. Like belly dancing, when climbing, participants are focused on the task at hand rather than the end goal. NOBL adds a fun challenge for all fitness levels in a new, fun, and engaging way.

HIKING | The perfect mind-body workout, hiking allows your joints, heart, and muscles to perform in distinct ways and results in a larger caloric burn than walking. The uneven ground on a hike recruits different muscles than flat surfaces and therefore strengthens a lot of muscles in the hips and knees, which in turn increases balance and stability. Nature also reduces your mind’s propensity to “ruminate” and increases positive mood while decreasing negative thoughts. BELLY DANCING | Unlike most full body workouts, belly dancing keeps you entertained and fully engaged. You are never staring at the clock wondering how much time is left. Belly dancing requires isolation of muscle groups, which is the ultimate way to tone your muscles. KICKBOXING | To get better balance, power, and agility, kickboxing is king among workouts. Kickboxing emphasizes powerful movements and improves coordination, and both anticipatory and reactive balance. Kickboxing is a workout that keeps you energized, teaches you how to defend yourself, and never makes you feel like you’re just plugging away on the elliptical. •

OCHSNER EAT FIT
Seafood Cioppino MAKES 8 SERVINGS
RECIPE PROVIDED BY TOMMY’S CUISINE
1 ½ pounds of fresh fish (e.g., snapper, tilapia) cubed 1 pound jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined ¼ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon fresh black pepper 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ½ cup fennel bulb, chopped ½ cup shallots, chopped 6 garlic cloves, chopped 1 pound fresh mussels 1 cup seafood tomato stock (Tommy’s makes their own, but the home chef can use pre-made seafood stock blended with fresh tomatoes) 1 lemon, halved
Season fish pieces and shrimp on both sides with salt and pepper. In a hot sauté pan, add olive oil and allow to heat but not smoke. Add fennel and shallots and allow to sweat for 2 minutes, then add the chopped garlic and allow to toast. Place the fish and shrimp into the pan being careful not to splash the oil. Let the seafood sear slightly on both sides. Do not cook all the way through. Add mussels and seafood tomato broth, and bring to low simmer. Once simmering, turn heat to low and place a cover over the pan and allow mussels to steam for 1.5 minutes. Once the mussels have opened, taste the broth for seasoning. Add fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon for additional flavor. Spoon into a large bowl to serve; serve hot.

To get better balance, power and agility, kickboxing is king among workouts. Experts who have studied the sport say nearly everyone—even older people who might shy away from such things—can benefit from throwing a punch. Unlike most other types of exercise, kickboxing emphasizes powerful movements. Power is different from strength, and for older adults, it’s an even better predictor of mobility and their risk for falls, says Kurt Jackson, an associate professor of neurology and rehab science at the University of Dayton in Ohio. “Pure strength is what a weightlifter uses, but producing power is about both force and speed,” he says. Kickboxing training tends to involve shorts bouts, two to three minutes long, of intense, repetitive movement—like hitting a punching bag over and over again and kicking and kneeing a pad someone else is holding. “If you look at the research on high-intensity interval training [HIIT], you see these short, intense periods of activity can have big benefits,” he says. Some research shows that even very brief stretches—just 60 seconds—of HIIT can offer the same gains in heart and lung health as 45 minutes of lessintense exercise. Kickboxing has been shown to improve fitness, power, flexibility and agility, according to a study of healthy men in their twenties who trained three days a week for five weeks. The men in the study improved their upper and lower body power by about 7%, while shaving off more than a second from their time in a 50-meter dash.
It also torches a lot of calories. One study from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that the kind of punching-and-kicking combinations used in Tae Bo or “cardio kickboxing” classes burn more than eight calories per minute— about the same amount you’d burn while swimming. The sport can also improve coordination, even in the most extreme cases. Jackson studies the neuromuscular benefits of kickboxing training for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition in which poor communication between the brain and muscles can lead to falls or problems with activities that rely on multitasking, like walking and talking. Kickboxing helps strengthen neuromuscular control in people with the disease in ways that improve balance, mobility and dual-tasking activities, he found. The benefits likely apply to older adults as well. Kickboxing improves both types of balance that the body requires—anticipatory and reactive— and better balance reduces risk of falls or muscle weakness. “Anticipatory balance is something you use when you can see a need coming, like when you’re stabilizing yourself to reach up into a cupboard,” Jackson says. Reactive balance is the type of mind-muscle coordination you need to catch your balance when you trip, or when life throws some unexpected object your way.
Those skills are useful before you hit old age. If your workout routine relies on lifting weights, running or yoga, your neuromuscular system may not be tuned to handle the kind of dynamic motion required for sports—even the ones you do just a few times a year, like skiing or pickup basketball. “You see these people step or twist wrong and suffer major tears,” Jackson says. “Kickboxing training is a great way to avoid those types of injuries.” As with most other forms of vigorous exercise, if you’re a newbie, it’s important to ease into kickboxing gradually. “If you have a bad knee or some other limitation, it’s important to have a coach or physical therapist who knows how to adapt a kickboxing program to your needs, and who will introduce it in a controlled, systematic manner,” Jackson says. Start slow, and you’ll get the most benefits in the end. •

In 2018, we saw the resurgence of boxing, an explosion of high-intensity interval training (otherwise known as HIIT), gyms popping up around neighborhoods, and advanced wearable technology hitting the market. As the year enters its last quarter, we turn our attention to 2019 and look forward to new workout trends. 30-MIN WORKOUTS For those short on time, 2019 will work in your favor. Following the path of the popular cycling and HIIT gyms offering compact 50–60-minute classes, you should expect abbreviated versions of these to breeze into strip malls. “I think the days of 1-hour workout classes are dwindling, and short 30-minute sessions, classes, and programs will definitely continue to grow as people learn you can get a lot done if you do it the right way, with a lot of intensity and short breaks,” says Ashley Pitt, NASM-certified personal trainer.
STREAMING CARDIO With Peloton, you can work out anywhere with an instructor and class. In 2019, expect that same functionality to move to other cardio equipment, such as “treadmills, stair steppers, and much more,” says Pitt. MOBILE-FRIENDLY FITNESS STUDIOS AND PERSONAL TRAINERS It would behoove anyone working in the fitness industry, whether you are a personal trainer or boutique studio, to have an app.
NEW ZUMBA Mixing the popularity of Zumba dance with core work, new dance workouts such as the Cha Cha Challenge should take off. NINJA WARRIOR GYMS With the colossal success of the television show “American Ninja Warrior,” look for more local gyms to open following the same format. Already available in 18 states at the time of this article, “Ninja Warrior gyms feature an array of physical challenges including the famous warped wall, a vertical ramp that you have to run up and scale to the top,” says Marcello Pedalino, certified fitness trainer and author of “Celebrate Life.”
MULTI-FUNCTION EQUIPMENT Rather than run on a treadmill and then lift weights, look for machines to come to market “offering people the chance to do resistance and cardio work using one contraption,” says Pitt. This saves time, space, and money.
MEN IN BARRE “Barre will start trending for all ages, genders, and fitness levels,” says Monica Lam-Feist, ACE-certified personal trainer and fitness lead at AlgaeCal. Although popular for a number of years, Lam-Feist foresees barre becoming a lessexclusive workout as people discover its benefits in helping gain flexibility.
HIIT FUSION As another blended work-
MINDFULNESS APPS “Although this
out, the success of HIIT is now beginning to mix with other flexibility-based fitness classes—and more will come. Melanie Kotcher, HIIT Pilates instructor and wellness coach, teaches HIIT Pilates sessions. “The HIIT elements burn fat and boost metabolism quickly, while the Pilates elements strengthen, increase flexibility, and decrease stress,” she says. “So, you’re getting the benefits from both techniques in one routine.”
has been up and coming for a while now, the idea of being mindful is ever-prevalent in our never-stopping lives,” says Caleb Backe, certified personal trainer and health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics. You should anticipate mindfulness and meditation to remain a hot topic as will new, quality apps to download that will promote this idea of slowing down and living in the present.
