hat’s the secret to a happy life? Many might say that money is a big part of the equation. But intrigued with discovering the secrets to a meaningful and happy life, a group of Harvard researchers launched a study in 1938. Then, they followed 268 male Harvard undergraduates—for 75 years. The unique Harvard Grant Study collected data on the men’s lives through surveys and interviews. They looked at all aspects, including relationships, politics and religion, coping strategies and alcohol use. What they found may surprise you. Perhaps one of the biggest revelations was that love really does matter when it comes to living a fulfilled life.
In his book about the study, Triumphs of Experience, Harvard psychiatrist George Vaillant, study director from 1972 to 2004, writes: “There are two pillars of happiness. One is love. The other is finding a way of coping with life that does not push love away.” The study’s most important finding? Relationships are the only things that matter in life. You could have a successful career, money and good physical health, but without supportive, loving relationships, you’d be unhappy. The ability to take in love is a great human skill. Let’s take a moment today to recognize the relationships in our lives. Our friends, family, neighbors, mentors, colleagues, even our pets. Thank them and let them know you appreciate them.

WEDDING WORKOUT BOOTCAMP By Erik Figueredo
I
f the wedding bells are ringing, the dumbbells should be clanging. Everybody wants to look good on their wedding day for the guests, inevitable pictures, the first dance, etc. After all, on your special day, all eyes are on you. And let’s not lie to ourselves, it’s important to look good for the honeymoon too. There is a lot of misinformation about what approach should be taken to achieve the body of your dreams on the day you’ve been dreaming about since you were a little kid (or in my case, the day of tremendous anxiety because these weddings aren’t cheap). Here’s the naked truth...you’re going to have to work hard so you can play hard during that wedding day and honeymoon. Ideally, you aren’t beginning your prep for the wedding too close to the actual day, and instead, start your journey at least 2-3 months before the day. Any longer is icing on the cake.
I recently helped a groom shed some unwanted weight for his big day. This is the process we used to help him reach his goals. He wanted to lose 20 pounds before the wedding and he had a little over 3 months to get there. Here were my rules. 1. ALL WORKOUT SESSIONS WILL BE FULL BODY. Emphasis on squats, deadlifts, lunges, step-ups, chin-ups, pushups, and farmer carries. In our workouts, we cut the fat and focused on the basics. 2. MINIMAL REST! This is perhaps the most overlooked component of a fat loss program. People work their booties off but don’t maximize their time in the gym because of the excessive rest breaks! Stop going on Instagram on your rest breaks, the Instagram models will still be there post-workout. The first week of training we took 60 seconds of rest between sets. The second week we took 45. The third week was 30. The fourth was 15 seconds only between sets. (This is exhausting...) The next week, after we upped the weight, we returned to 60 seconds rest and repeated the process. On any given week if the weight is too heavy for the amount of rest time prescribed, lower the weight. It is important to keep moving. Always make sure form is on point and the weight is appropriate.
3. LASTLY, YOU HAVE TO EAT WELL! You cannot out train a bad diet! Sorry for yelling but it’s very important. My rule for this amazing client was “Earn your carbs.” Carbs are not the enemy. Please do not fear the carbohydrate. It means well—it’s just misunderstood. I allowed him to eat good sources of carbs post-workout only after he had earned them. Other meals of the day were high in protein and high in fat. I cannot stress enough the importance of a high protein diet when trying to improve body composition. Aim for around 1.5-2 g of protein per pound of body weight per day. This may sound high, but I assure you it is perfectly fine. The alleged negative response to a high protein diet is not backed by research whatsoever. HEALTHY FOODS Proteins -Lean Meats (grass-fed if possible) or Salmon -Plain Greek Yogurt -Protein Supplement Carbohydrates -Vegetables and Fruits. Mostly vegetables. (These can be eaten at any time of day.) -Quinoa and Whole Oats (Post-workout only.) Fats -Avocados -Mixed Nuts (Preferably raw and unsalted) -Fish Oil If done with dedication, this plan will help you achieve your ideal wedding body. Work hard to look good and feel good on the day you’ll never forget. • Erik Figueredo is a trained fitness instructor with various health and wellness certifications based out of Miami, Florida.

chsner Eat Fit could not be more excited to announce that the dietitian-approved Eat Fit King Cake has officially hit the stores! Molly Kimball, registered dietitian and founder of Ochsner Eat Fit has worked closely with John Caluda of Caluda’s Cottage Catering to develop the Eat Fit King Cake—which happens to be Gluten Free, Grain Free, Low Carb, and Keto-approved. Centered on an all-natural clean ingredient label, the Eat Fit King Cake is made with almond flour, coconut flour, and Greek yogurt. It’s sweetened with Swerve—a natural, plant-based sweetener based here in New Orleans, with no artificial sweeteners or food dyes. And here’s the thing: It tastes amazing! The feedback from our tasting panels has been overwhelmingly positive—with many being unaware of such nutritious changes to the recipe. Because we used almond and coconut flour, the appearance and texture is like a regular white king cake—not grainy, like a whole wheat version. And thanks to the Greek yogurt, it’s also incredibly moist—think pound cake meets king cake. n our November Natural Health issue, we covered the benefits of Cannabidiol oil, Your CBD Store’s Crystal Nugent, and her inspiring story. “Once I overcame that huge obstacle and seeing firsthand how CBD changed my life, I knew I had to bring awareness to everyone around me. I knew to do so I had to open up stores and educate people on the possibilities of using CBD as an option, to make their quality of life better too,” shared Nugent. Now, coming this month Nugent is expanding Your CBD Store to the Westbank. As we’ve seen the popularity of CBD skyrocket since 2018, we wanted to fit it into our Healthy Relationships and Natural Brides issue and learn about how it’s affecting Louisianans. We asked New Orleans to share how the opening of a local Your CBD has affected the relationships in their lives. Mary Barber of Terrytown,

Louisiana said that CBD has become part of her and her friend’s daily routines. “Several of my friends have bought from the CBD store. Most of them bought it primarily to help manage their pain. CBD is my daily routine. It helps me sleep and with my chronic pain. Also, my stress management level has improved.” Increasingly, studies are showing significant medical benefits of CBD oil, which is legal cannabinoids from Cannabis plants. CBD does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Nora Volkow, advised on the promising benefits of CBD on various conditions, “Pre-clinical research has shown CBD to have a range of effects that may be therapeutically useful, including anti-seizure, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor, anti-psychotic, and anti-anxiety properties.”

“I’ve suffered from TMJ pains/ flare-ups for about 8 years,” said Ashley Hatcher, a Your CBD New Orleans customer. “I was first recommended by a friend to try CBD oil as an alternative to pain medicine. From there, I have recommended it to my close friends and family. Now my husband and mother both use CBD oil on a regular basis.” Inflammation is the root of many diseases, and CBD may be a good addition to your anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. A 2009 research paper concluded that CBD can regulate tissue damage caused by excessive inflammation. The results suggest that CBD could be a promising therapeutic tool for the treatment of several diseases characterized by inflammation of the GI tract. The popular biomedical scientist Dr. Rhonda Patrick advises that she is convinced of the connection between the gut and overall health. CBD comes in many forms, it can be ingested, applied topically, and inhaled

as a vapor. People with pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, Depression, PTSD, and anxiety may benefit from CBD. Nugent and her team at Your CBD Store help make incorporating CBD into your life is easy, you can start with a self-care spa treatment using bath bombs and body lotions, or include a few drops in your bedtime tea. “CBD has helped me tremendously! I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, and every minute of every day is different. Some days I cannot get out of bed due to fatigue,” said Karen Clementi, a Your CBD Store New Orleans customer. “Since I started taking the CBD, my pain levels have drastically reduced. I have not changed any dosing in the prescribed medication. Getting out of bed is much easier, my legs don’t feel like dead weight.”
Clementi said it was her husband who suggested adding CBD to her routine after he did some research. “The positive effect of my relationships? CBD has ‘given me back my life,’ she said. “I have two girls, and I was missing out on things.” It’s very important to purchase CBD from a reputable source, that’s why I opened a brick and mortar store,” said Nugent. “People can come in to our stores at anytime and speak to our educated staff and know that they are getting thoroughly tested products at the highest quality. We pride ourselves on being transparent in showing our customers our Lab Reports. Each bottle of ours has a QR code that sends your directly to that Lab Report associated with it.” CBD can be just another tool for you to help relieve various symptoms and allow you to be present and more available to enjoy the company of others around you. •

10 FOODS YOU SHOULD EAT BEFORE THE WEDDING Get the scoop on the skin-and-body enhancing superfoods that will help you get that bridal glow. By: Terrie Collymore eauty begins from within. Brides who adhere to this old adage know the drill: Avoid certain foods and drinks 24 hours before the wedding and you’ll avoid big-day beauty woes like zits, puffy eyes, sweating, and bloating. On the taboo list? Dairy, gluten, refined sugar, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and caffeine. You’re probably thinking that doesn’t leave a lot of options. “Actually, there are plenty of natural foods you can have,” says Kimberly Snyder, nutritionist and New York Times bestselling author. “They contain vitamins, minerals, and trace nutrients, which clean and nourish your blood and tissues, while contributing to the overall radiance of your skin.” Check out the super beauty foods topping our menu—that are also great to nosh on pre-wedding day.
THE SKIN SAVERS Red bell peppers | “One of my favorite foods, red bell peppers are loaded with vitamin C, which can help to repair and regenerate collagen, the protein that gives structure to your skin,” explains Snyder. Cucumber | Considered the ultimate eye de-puffer, this fruit is full of hydrating enzyme-enriched water—and hydration is key for youthful, smooth skin. Sweet Potatoes | If your skin is looking dull and lackluster, add sweet potatoes to your diet. They contain the magical skinbrightening combination of vitamin A and vitamin C, “that work to neutralize cell tissue-damaging free radicals,” Snyder points out. Sweet potatoes are also rich in biotin and vitamins B2, B6, and E— hair and nail strengtheners. Yogurt | All those pre-wedding parties can cut into your beauty sleep and leave you with telltale dark circles under the eyes. Combat them with Greek yogurt. It’s rich with amino acids known to target those dark rings. Spinach | This helps to prevent wrinkles, remove dead skin cells from your body, and make room for fresh, new ones.
THE BODY DO-GOODERS Pumpkin Seeds | Want perfect posture for your photos and first dance? Toasted pumpkin seeds can help you stand tall. They’re packed with a high amount of magnesium (one ounce contains approx. 74 mg), which strengthens bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Sprouts | This “baby” plant has long been lauded for having offthe-charts nutritional value thanks to its increased amounts of vitamins, such as B complex and C, plus amino acids. “Sprouts are one of the most powerful foods for cellular regeneration and health,” says Snyder, who recommends consuming them “regularly to cleanse your body, nourish your cells and tissues, and contribute to a beautiful glow, from the inside out.” Lemons | Banish bloat by adding this citrus detoxifier. “Lemons support digestion in the colon, promoting the elimination of waste more efficiently and regularly,” explains Snyder.
THE STRESS RELIEVERS
Celery | What bride hasn’t had a mini-meltdown? Bring on the calm and reach for this leafy stalk. A star ingredient in most green juices, “celery contains a de-stressing compound called phthalide,” points out Snyder. “It relaxes the muscles around the arteries to allow blood vessels to dilate and can help reduce stress hormones and lower blood pressure.” Salmon | This fish is packed with omega-3s—the ultimate stress fighters. Even when wedding craziness ramps up, your emotions will stay even keel if you incorporate this tasty protein into your meal rotation. •

protecting ceremony and reception, but make it a priority for all aspects of the wedding. Choose an antique diamond or go to a dealer who is committed to obtaining metals and stones in ways that are socially and environmentally responsible such as Brilliant Earth, Dogeared, Ingle & Rhode among many others.
2. USE RECYCLED PAPER: Save-the-dates, invitations, programs, menus, and thank-you cards can quickly add up to a whole lot of paper. Look for recycled options to cut down on environmental waste. Also, take advantage of the internet and post information such as directions on a wedding website to really foster an ecofriendly theme. 3. GO LOCAL: Cut down on your carbon footprint by hiring local vendors and buying local and in-season food and flowers. 4. GET THRIFTY: Scour flea markets and thrift stores for forgotten treasures and give them a second life as wedding décor. 5. TOSS IT WISELY: Work with your venue or wedding planning to set up a disposal system that includes recycle containers for cans and bottles, and a compost bin for biodegradable substances, including fruits, vegetables, and plants.
Ask e Life Coach Most people are deep into their health plans at this time of year, while in NOLA we’re surrounded by king cake plus all the alcohol that goes with Carnival celebrations—what can I do to make better choices in this environment? —Amy
with Carla Robertson
H
ere’s a question that almost always works to get some clarity: How do you want to feel this month and next? Take a minute and write down some answers. About Carnival, you might write feelings like exuberant, social, happy. Now list a few ways to feel each of these feelings, separate from food and drink. Often when we find ourselves overindulging, it’s because we are trying to reach a state we’ve subconsciously associated with these items. By focusing on the feeling you want, you can bypass the step where you eat and drink too much and you can still enjoy the tastes of the season. When you practice being more aware of your desired feelings, you’ll almost always find that you don’t actually feel like eating that piece of king cake that’s lingering in the office kitchen.•

Get Healthy Stay Healthy 3 Ways Working on You Can Lead to a Better Us By: Sara Gershen, LCSW
Are you in an unhealthy relationship with a partner, family member, or friend? Relationship problems are some of the most common underlying reasons for sadness and anxiety. Below are three things we often focus on to guide individuals to healthier relationships.
Patterns | If you are feeling a sense of dĂŠjĂ vu because you keep running into the same issues, a therapist can help you uncover repeated patterns in your life. Sometimes, individuals continue patterns from childhood through adulthood that can be unhealthy.
Communication | If you feel like you and your partner talk in circles or struggle to discuss important issues, therapy is often a place to learn how to communicate more effectively. A therapist can help identify and address communication pitfalls.
Self-Reflection | Taking an hour a week to focus on yourself and your feelings can be a helpful, freeing experience. We often rush through life trying to complete tasks without taking the time to reflect on our thoughts and feelings. Focusing on yourself can help you be a better participant in all your relationships.
