letter from the publisher
am so incredibly excited for our feature this month, NOLA’s Women in Wellness 2018. I was just telling the beautiful April Dupré, who graces our cover this month, that this feature combines everything I love: NOLA, health and wellness, and supporting incredible, strong women in our community. Not to mention supporting those women that are also supporting health and wellness for others in the community themselves—bringing it full circle. I actually added the “2018” to the title after seeing how beautifully the piece was coming together, and how special it was. I knew that this was something I wanted us to do annually. Just looking over the photos and reading the bios, I saw women from all backgrounds and many different fields doing their part every day to help those in our community to live healthier lifestyles. Together, they encompass all aspects of “wellness.” And as I began to put the feature together, I just kept thinking of more amazing women and then as I spoke of it, others began to nominate women they felt just had to be featured— “for the very good of humanity,” as some put it. And I know there are so many more dedicated women out there doing

the same every day, with little to no recognition, which is why I knew I had to make this an annual feature. One of the favorite parts of my job, if not my very favorite, is getting to shine a spotlight on spectacular people, places, organizations, events, etc. in our community, even just for a moment, so that more in our city can see them. I see you, and I know others would love to as well. To all of the amazing women out there—the mothers, sisters, aunts, girlfriends, wives, and friends—keep it up. Every day that you get up and take care of everything from your homes, to your jobs, to yourselves, we know you are the glue that holds the world together. And if anyone hasn’t told you yet today—you rock! Your Publisher,
Melissa

ardiovascular exercise improves a person’s healthy gut microbes even without making dietary changes, University of Illinois researchers report. In a study of 32 people, 30 to 60 minutes of exercise three times a week for six weeks boosted levels of healthy intestinal bacteria, especially for lean subjects, and less so for the obese. The healthy bacteria produced short-
chain fatty acids that reduce the risk of colon cancer. “The bottom line is that there are clear differences in how the microbiome of somebody who is obese versus somebody who is lean responds to exercise,” says Jeffrey Woods, Ph.D., a kinesiology professor at the university.

YOGA AND PELVIC HEALTH
A
s we move in our lives, it is so easy to rush our thoughts, neglect our bodies, and overlook what we feel. Over time, living this way can create a disconnect between mind/ body awareness, thus leading to internal miscommunication. Maintaining a strong foundation allows us to move smoothly through our days and experiences with grace. Our legs, pelvis, and lower abdomen are not only the physical roots of our bodies, but also house the energies of stability and groundedness within our subtle bodies. As we strengthen, open, and embody our pelvic region, we create the basis for physical presence which assists in taking us out of the stress response (flight or fight) and into the relaxation response. As our bodies relax, the nervous system and endocrine system (hormones) begin to experience homeostasis.

GREEN BUSINESS TIP OF THE MONTH
How do I get balance in my life as a busy woman in 2018? It seems like everything is on fire and needs to be dealt with this minute.
—Stephanie
B
alance seems ever-elusive, especially when women are performing more than their share of emotional labor in many situations, on top of all their other tasks. Google “emotional labor” and you’ll quickly see why balance feels nearly impossible. Modern women are taught that we can have freedom and sovereignty, and that we can liberate ourselves from outdated expectations and norms. Yet we are still managing and performing most of the roles from the past, plus pursuing our goals and dreams. Besides being overwhelmed and tempted to let it all burn down, what can we do? Try one or more of these strategies and see if it helps.

1. Say no more often. Let others step up and take responsibility for what is theirs—whether it’s laundry, organizing a luncheon, or managing their emotions. What can you refuse to do, even if it’s not being “nice” to do so? 2. Understand that you can’t actually have or do it all, and you may need to make hard choices to let go of things that matter a little less to you than others. See “Say No” above. 3. Speak truth to power in your home, workplace, and government. Sometimes you need to keep pushing for a major paradigm shift so that you are no longer the one dealing with all the fires. 4. Team up with allies to support each other, in planning, commiserating, sharing the load, or simply listening to each other. Often when we are overwhelmed, we isolate ourselves. Reconnect with others whose company you enjoy. 5. Let go of unreasonable expectations, especially for yourself. If you wouldn’t require a particular level of perfection or performance from others, allow yourself the same courtesy. 6. In situations where none of these tips apply, allow things to be as they are, on fire and out of balance. Give yourself relief in not needing to change anything, and simply do the best you can. That is more than enough. natural awakenings
