I truly believe that the best way to go about that is through happiness. o promote the benefits of a plantbased diet, the Humane Society of Louisiana has scheduled a citywide “Vegan Dine-Out!” for Monday, July 9th. The interest in veganism (the avoidance of meat or dairy products) seems to be on the rise both internationally and locally, with five vegan restaurants now operating in the city, including Seed, Superfoods Bar, Good Karma Cafe, Max Well New Orleans, and the recently opened Sweet Soulfood, which routinely sells out its daily offerings.

“Times have changed since the times when I co-owned Jack Sprat’s Vegetarian Grill, on South Carrollton Ave. back in the mid-1990s,” says Jeff Dorson. “Back then, we were the only vegan restaurant in town and we never drew a strong following. But today’s vegan restaurants seem to be thriving and more and more are opening up or at least offering more vegan options,” he adds.

The Humane Society of Louisiana has been actively promoting veganism since its inception more than 30 years. To help pay for some of its early programs, the group hosted a vegan Sunday brunch in the basement of a Methodist Church and started the New Orleans Vegetarian Society, which boasts more than 1440 members, more than 10 years ago.

“We hope that hundreds of folks will participate in our Vegan Dine-Out promotion and enjoy a delicious and nutritious meal at one of the city’s great plant-based restaurants,” says Jeff Dorson.

ecently I experienced a gut-wrenching feeling upon reading a headline that a Pilot Whale died in the ocean after ingesting 80 plastic bags. I could not bring myself to read the article. The fact that human impact upon the planet has reached this level should shock us into an intensive period of self-reflection. In some corners of the world, including New Orleans, that’s exactly what is happening. Last month in New Orleans World Environment Day was celebrated at the Carver Theater, as students, mayors, activists, and corporatesustainability representatives from across the country gathered to make commitments and motivate each other to do more for eliminating plastic waste. I was there representing Atlas Handmade Beads, which offers handcrafted, eco-friendly alternatives to Chinese plastic beads. It was particularly inspiring to hear from a contingent of students from Atlanta. A 17-year-old started a One Less Straw campaign, a 15-year-old created Plastic Pollution Awareness Day in Georgia, and an 11-year-old

and 12-year-old are trying to ban single-use plastics from schools. It was encouraging to listen to several elected officials representing the Mississippi Rivers Cities and Towns Initiative, which focuses on improving the ecological health of the river. OCHSNER EAT FIT Pan-Roasted Gulf Fish W/Chickpea Cassoulet RECIPE PROVIDED BY DTP

SERVES 4

1 tablespoon olive oil, divided ½ teaspoon garlic, diced 1 Calabrian chili pepper (jarred, packed in oil) 1 carrot, diced small 1 onion, diced small 1 stalk celery, diced small 2 cups chickpeas, cooked 4 7–9 ounces. skin-on filets gulf fish 1 teaspoon cornstarch ½ teaspoon salt, divided Pepper to taste ¼ pound small tri-color carrots ¼ cup cane vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon chives, chopped 2 tablespoon reduced fat Greek yogurt or sour cream PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES. CASSOULET: In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté garlic, chili pepper, carrot, onion, and celery in olive oil until slightly translucent. Add chickpeas and heat.

Remove one-third of chickpea mixture. Add to food processor and blend till creamy, then mix back into chickpea blend. Set aside.

PAN-ROASTED FISH: Dust skin side of fish with corn starch, pepper, and dash of salt. Season flesh side with dash of salt and pepper. Heat ½ tablespoon oil in large cast iron skillet. Place fish into skillet, skin-side down, and press gently. Once fish starts to relax, place into oven for 6-8 minutes or until fish is completely cooked.

TRI-COLOR CARROTS: Using a mandolin or knife, shave carrots into thin slices. Keep carrot top “flower” and toss the tops and mandolin-thin slices with cane vinegar with a dash of salt and pepper.

TO SERVE: Spread chickpea cassoulet into bottom of plates. Top with fish, placed flesh-side down, with skinside up. Finish off with Greek yogurt, fresh thyme, parsley, and chives. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with tri-color baby carrots.

hen does the quest for beauty become counterproductive and get in the way of us living our most fully expressed lives, as these women relate?

What do we consider acceptable in ourselves, and how do we measure our own beauty?

We have far more access to images of perfect-looking people now than decades ago, and even our own snapshots can be easily manipulated. Who hasn’t used an app to remove a blemish or brighten a smile?

Are we less willing to be seen because of a little jowliness or an extra curve? Are we spending untold amounts of time, energy and money trying to eliminate five or ten or fifteen pounds of our own precious bodies?

We barely notice the changes in our beauty standards because they come slowly; aesthetic procedures once reserved for the wealthy are now affordable for the masses, and we can contour our faces until they are barely recognizable as us. Or not.

My advice this month is to question. If what you’ve been prioritizing no longer makes sense to you, bravely shift the paradigm. Expand your definition of beauty for yourself and for others. Consider throwing out the need to have beauty be such a major part of the equation at all.

This isn’t about not enjoying makeup or having fun looking pretty.

But when it’s not fun, and it is impacting your happiness, it’s time to make a shift. What would the world be like if we all supported each other to be fully ourselves and age appropriately and healthily? Let’s find out together.

It is important to note that we digest not only our daily food and beverages, but we also digest endless emotional perceptions, visual images in our physical environment as well as the energies and attitudes of the people we spend time with on a regular basis. The “quality” of all we digest “becomes us” and then shines outward to the world.

f you are new to Ayurveda, try dipping your toe into this vast ocean of ancient wisdom by trying some of the helpful daily and seasonal routines mentioned below. Stay in tune with nature and focus on digesting the pure and “satvic” things that will help keep you balanced, radiant and cool this summer.

Awaken just before sunrise to give the body a chance to harmonize with the rhythms of the day.

Drink a cup of warm water first thing in the morning to awaken and cleanse the digestive track. Occasionally add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a mini liver cleanse.

Splash the eyes with cool water upon waking and throughout the day to release any excess heat.

Enjoy foods that are pure, light, sweet and cooling – anything bountiful at a local farmers market will help balance you in the summer months.

Set a trusted rhythm around meal times that your body can count on. Eat breakfast between 6-8am, lunch between 11am-1pm, dinner between 5-7pm.

Practice some yoga, meditation and breath work (pranayama) each day.

Balance your life among activity and rest, allowing for more rest in summer months.

Try to get to sleep by 10pm to ensure adequate rest and detoxification.

Eat your meals in a peaceful, beautiful and soothing environment.

Take the time to appreciate the quality, colors and textures of the food you are eating.

Spend time in nature each day. Early morning walks are ideal.

• Do volunteer work to stay humble, to pacify the ego and to calm the mind.

• Wear cooling colors such as white, blues and greens.

• Wear cooling stones like pearls, turquoise and opals.

• Use essential oils like rose, jasmine, lavender & sandalwood to cool the body and mind.

• (I put mine in a blue glass spray bottle mixed with water and I spritz myself all day long).

• Wear hats & glasses to limit the amount of heat you are taking in each day.

• Practice non-competitive and restorative yoga in summer months.

• Limit hot and spicy foods in summertime.

• Use cooling spices such as dill, fennel, cilantro, cardamom and coriander.

• Drink plenty of water though out the day.

• Consume plenty of fruits (fruits should be eaten alone and not to be mixed with other foods - especially not yogurt nor dairy as this builds up toxins, called ama, in the body.

• Give the body 2 hours to digest fruit before consuming other foods.

• If you are consuming alcohol in summer months, try to stick with beer and white wine as these are more cooling and try to avoid whiskey and tequila, which can over heat.

AVOCADO AND EGG YOLK STRENGTHENING HAIR MASK ½ avocado 2 egg yolks Mix ingredients, apply to dry hair, and let it soak in for 15-20 minutes.

Rinse hair thoroughly.
