COMMUNITY SOLAR IS A NEW OPTION IN SOLAR ENERGY By: Kevin Fitzwilliam
For six years until 2015, Louisiana offered the most appealing tax credits in the country for homeowners looking to install residential solar energy systems on their homes. Since the elimination of those tax credits, the demand for residential solar energy in the state has diminished to a trickle. In that same time, a new way for homeowners to participate in solar energy has emerged in other parts of the country. It is called community solar, and it allows participation of citizens who would love to support solar energy but are unable to make a private investment in a residential solar system on their roofs. A utility agrees to either supply power or purchase power from a massive solar field consisting of several hundred or several thousand solar panels. Any customer of that utility would be eligible to participate in the solar community program by either purchasing or leasing a solar panel or a “block” of a few panels. The customer would then receive compensation for the energy production generated by the community-solar subscription. The energy produced from the solar panels could not directly receive routing to those homes, of course, but instead, it serves an addition onto the same grid that all of the utility customers share. Community Solar, then, provides a way for the folks left out of the solar game for a litany of reasons – unsuitable roofs due to shade or style, questionable credit scores, fear of investing in residential solar, or renters who do not have the authority to make decisions on a building they do not own and to get involved. Interested in learning more about community solar? Email me at info@atlasbeads.com.
IT’S KENNEL COUGH SEASON WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW! Does your dog have a snotty nose and a dry, hacking cough? According to the American Kennel Club, Kennel Cough is a contagious respiratory disease commonly contracted at places where canines congregate, such as boarding and day care facilities, veterinarian offices, dog parks, training groups, dog shows or even retail stores. Dogs can spread it to one another through airborne droplets including barking, direct contact such as touching noses, or contaminated surfaces like food and water bowls. Kennel Cough is highly treatable in most dogs but can be more severe in puppies younger than six months, seniors and immunocompromised dogs. Kennel Cough is the dog equivalent of the human cold. There’s not much you can do to prevent them from catching it, but rest and lots of fluids help recovery. Symptoms such as runny noses, coughing or vomiting don’t begin until the virus has been incubated for 7 to 10 days. It’s during this incubation period that the virus can spread, so it’s virtually impossible to know who already has it. Once your dog shows symptoms, they are no longer contagious, but as with a small child, you want to limit their activity and excitement levels to keep the signs from getting worse. Just as a human cold can progress into more serious illnesses like pneumonia or bronchitis, puppies, seniors and dogs with compromised immune systems should be monitored closely for symptom progression that could require medications from your veterinarian. When should your dog resume regular activity? When s/ he has been entirely symptom-free for at least a week-no coughing, vomiting or lethargy-and all needed medications are complete. If you have any doubts, questions or concerns about your dog’s condition, always seek advice from your veterinarian. here are plenty of excellent reasons to get a dog, and among the companionship, cute photos, and responsibility, owning a fur baby can improve your health. Studies have shown that dogs help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; and even motivate you to exercise and help lose weight. A dog may, in reality, be your greatest workout partner.
Getting Fit with Your Dog
Working out with your dog, however, is not limited to walks around the neighborhood. There are so many great ways to get active with your pup!
SWIMMING Swimming is a great all-in-one workout that is especially beneficial for people or dogs with arthritis. Swimming is easy on the joints due to it being a low-impact sport. It works for various muscle groups, improves endurance, and strengthens the heart and lungs. Not all dogs love swimming, so start slow. Once they get adjusted, it’s a refreshing and fun way to break a sweat.
VISIT A DOG PARK
More of a workout for your dog than yourself, a dog park is still a great option. Taking your dog to the dog park can be as little or as challenging activity-wise as you want. You can run with your dog or play fetch/frisbee or just let your dog run around and socialize with the other dogs. Dog parks not only help keep your dog active but aid in their ability to be around other people and other dogs.
ROLLERBL ADING While most people may be wary of taking their dog rollerblading out of fear of injury, when done safely and correctly, rollerblading is an excellent dog workout. It helps teach your dog discipline in staying by your side and not pulling the leash while also increasing their heart rate more so than walking or hiking does. Rollerblading keeps a more normalized pace than running, adding consistency to the workout. 10

DOGA Downward-dog just got a makeover. Doga incorporates your pet into Hatha yoga poses, for example, you recline in a comfortable pose with your legs bent over your dog’s torso. Classes are popping up all over the country, but while hiking and swimming up your dog’s heart rate, doga does not. Instead, doga is more for strengthening the bond between pet and owner and aiding in the relaxation of your pup.
HIKING If you live or vacation in an area that offers hiking opportunities, you’ve got one lucky dog. Dogs love to hike and be introduced to new scents and engage with other animals. You’ll need to keep a brisk enough pace to elevate your heart rate. Be aware of protecting your dog with flea and tick prevention and a Lyme vaccine if you are in an area where those bugs are prominent. The views and both uphill and downhill walking make hiking with your dog a fantastic workout.
A classic canine workout, frisbee can be a relaxed game at home, or your dog can join a “disc dog” team and participate in competitions. Frisbee is a fun way to get your dog outdoors and also train them on coordination.
LOCAL DOG PARKS NOLA City Bark The roomiest off the off-the-leash dog parks, City Bark is located in the heart of City Park and spans nearly five acres. The park opened in 2010 and features separate play areas for small and big dogs, water fountains, a walking trail, and even a dog washing station. There are, however, guidelines for gaining access such as applying for a permit, an annual registration fee and having your dog be up to date on vaccination, as well as being spayed or neutered. Wisner Dog Run Smaller than City Bark, but still off-leash, Wisner Dog Run offers about 8,500 square feet and opened in last 2013. It takes up part of the existing playground at the park off Laurel Street between Lyons and Upperline and provides benches, water fountains, and a fairway-like dirt run for the dogs.
water, Crescent Park Dog Run is a 1.4 mile, 20-acres spot at Crescent Park. There is a short dog run on the park’s eastern side and it is offlease. The Levee While not a traditional dog park, the levee is an open park close to lots of River Road traffic and the railroad track, but is one of the most scenic places to take your furry friend. Located along the Mississippi River, dogs are free to roam and interact with the most amount of people. The Levee also provides the most space for various workouts with your dog. The Levee is a must for dogs and owners alike.

EVACUATING WITH YOUR PETS

Emergency Preparedness for Your Furry Friends
As hurricane season continues to sweep through North America and fires burn in the West, many people are preparing to evacuate their homes. An evacuation is already stressful enough – worrying about how to bring your pet safely with you can add even more strain. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you and your pet reach safety during any natural disaster evacuation.

what to pack
You probably have an emergency kit stowed away for you, but what about your pet? The first step in preparation is to have a pet emergency kit with the basics that a pet needs in case of evacuation. Keep this pack in a dry, cool area that’s easy to reach. Whether you put it in your pack, your pet’s, or both, make sure to have plenty of bottled water and non-perishable food. Make sure your pets always have their tags, collars and up-to-date identification information. A pet’s tag should include basic information like their name and how to contact you. A copy of your pet’s up-to-date medical records should be kept in a waterproof container. It’s easiest to just keep them in a zip-locked plastic bag. Whenever the records are updated, replace the one in your emergency pack. Any medicine your pet may need. Disposable food and water dishes, as well as a week’s worth of canned or dry food. If you have a cat, bring litter. Garbage bag and disinfectant for easy cleanup. To keep your pets happy and comfortable, it’s always nice to have a blanket in your pack as well as a favorite toy or stuffed animal.

keep your pet calm
An important part of pet emergency preparedness is knowing how to keep your pet calm and comfortable throughout the process. Pets can become distressed with changing routines, new environments, and new people and smells all around them. Make sure your pet has a familiar blanket or toy with them, and speak to them in reassuring tones. If you’re stressed, chances are your pet will feel that pressure as well. Special clothing items like ThunderShirts can also provide a calming sense if your pet is feeling nervous. There are also medications to help with anxiety in your pets, but make sure to consult with your veterinarian to see what is appropriate for your cat or dog.

CHECKLIST
how to evacuate
In case of emergency it’s always best to have a clear, actionable plan in place for you and your pet. If you need to evacuate, you can look up local shelters that allow pets. Some of these may request that you reserve space in advance – when you become aware of a possible weather emergency in the forecast, be sure to contact shelters. Be sure to also have the contact information of your neighbors, your veterinarian, and emergency services in your area. Check out these tips from Ready.gov to help with your evacuation plan. It’s always best to be prepared and have every step written out ahead of time so that you’re not scrambling when an emergency happens.

ASK THE LIFE COACH with Carla Robertson
C
ircumstances in the world and my life feel overwhelming, and I’m having trouble connecting with joy. Do you have a solution? – Abigail
A
bigail, I understand. We have so much more information now to process than even five or ten years ago. Due to social media, we are not merely limited to our family illnesses or losses, but also those of friends and acquaintances. The bombarding 24-hour news cycle seems inescapable and upsetting but at the same time, it is also ironically addictive. If we’re not tuned in, we feel like we might be missing something important, and we have less and less time to rest unless we actively prioritize it. Rest is part of what’s required to feel joy. If you’re on high alert all the time, there’s no space for the lighter, calmer emotion of ease-filled pleasure.
First, unplug and prioritize rest. Then what? Since this is the pet issue, try taking a cue from the animals around you. They are fantastic teachers of present moment awareness. Spending undistracted time with a furry being is a sure path to joy. What brings us joy with a pet is a connection that is judgmentfree–immersing in our senses, whether it is hearing sweet purring or petting soft fur, moving our bodies while we take our pet for a walk, playing, giving and receiving unconditional love, offering care and comfort, and receiving gratitude for it. Joy arises from simple experiences which are possible even when the world or our situation feels chaotically challenging. If animals are not your thing, choose other ways to immerse in the present moment, give and receive love, and give yourself a break from handling anything additional for at least a short while. The world and all its problems will still be there, and you’ll have more energy to actively engage if you give yourself permission to take a break and get some rest and furry snuggles.
