FOR ALL THINGS NATURAL IN NOLA ’m calling this issue the Season of Kindness. The holidays can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. But it seems more and more, the commercialism of it all is taking hold and it is becoming more about what you get or what you have to get for others more than anything. I wanted to take some emphasis off that for a moment and focus on those that give— their time, their money, their heart, sweat, and soul—into our town not only this time of year, but throughout the year. To the everyday heroes, from the volunteers, the community outreach folks, the nonprofit workers, to the people holding families together, helping neighbors, giving back any little way they can—we salute you and we thank you. All of your efforts are making a difference. You are making a difference.

5 TIPS TO HANDLE FAMILY DYNAMICS DURING THE HOLIDAYS During the holidays we often enter a state of feeling stuffed, and it’s not just from Christmas cookies. Often, family dynamics can feel daunting.

Here are five ways in which you can prepare yourself for the holiday season and enjoy rather than fear the time you have with your loved ones.

1. CREATE A SOLID UNDERSTANDING

OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT MATTERS TO YOU. Before you head home, take time to write all the things you love and are grateful for in your life. Fostering this awareness prevents self-doubt and insecurities.

2. DON’T TRY AND SOLVE OTHER

PEOPLE’S PROBLEMS. One of the most common holiday traps in the triangulated situation.

Instead of getting involved in the affairs of other people, encourage them to bring their issues directly to the person.

3. CARVE OUT TIME TO GET INTO YOUR BODY. With all the food, alcohol, questions about your career, inquisitions into your love life, and the unavoidable sibling rivalries, it’s important to take a break and get moving.

family is perfect, and with varying opinions, there is almost always a disagreement, but remember, it is not your job to change someone else. You are not responsible for the thoughts and actions of other people so rather than get riled up over dissenting opinions, embrace them as a beloved person and enjoy the holiday season.

SET BOUNDARIES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD. Don’t force yourself to be unhappy, if you know that you don’t enjoy certain situations like when your mom comments on your appearance, remember you can remove yourself.

Season of Giving PROJECT PEACEFUL WARRIORS | Project Peaceful Warriors is a non-profit in New Orleans that provides educators with tangible tools from a culturally competent lens to increase focus, engagement, positive relationships, and positive classroom culture. Their programming empowers students with tools to develop self-awareness and self-regulation skills that enhance social, physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The non-profit also facilitates the application of yoga and mindfulness skills to other academic and social environments, empowers teachers to bring trauma informed yoga, mindfulness, and self-care into their classrooms to decrease behavior programs and reduce stress and anxiety. Project Peaceful Warriors ultimate goal is to cultivate a culture that promotes health and wellness in students, educators, staff, parents, and the greater community.

These individuals and businesses, however, do not just give back to the community during the holiday season, but do so throughout the year. These people and organizations are worth recognizing today and always.

Tulane Business School TIDES volunteers come out every year with their professors—Prof. Dennis Kehoe has been doing this for over 15 years. He uses the build as a capstone to learn about economic opportunity, so he truly combines service with learning. Dennis is also one of our Core Volunteers—he comes out almost every single weekend to build.

TULANE BUSINESS SCHOOL | TIDES volunteers come out every year with their professors—Prof. Dennis Kehoe has been doing this for over 15 years. SON OF A SAINT | Each year, Son of a Saint selects a group of boys ages 10-13 to join the existing kids in our program. The boys must be fatherless due to their father’s incarceration, death, or abandonment. Each boy remains an official Son of a Saint mentee until he is 18, but the connections remain and we continue to advise and support him in the years that follow. Their goal is to graduate self-sufficient, independent thinkers who are leaders and give back to their community. Son of a Saint equips boys with the tools they need to become productive men. They give them hope, vision, and opportunity. They provide a secure and consistent environment for them. But the Son of a Saint mentors’ most important role is simply to be a good example.

NOW, LOVE | Now, Love is a non-partisan network of over 500 women in New Orleans working to keep justice, equity, inclusion, respect, anti-racism, honesty, and integrity in our community!

Now, Love supports organizations doing good work and promotes learning and inspiration among members. Each month they focus on an area of import to community members and work with one local organization to facilitate a session focused on their good work. Each gathering aims to leave women inspired, expanded, and activated.

ANDREA WIMBERLY | A yoga instructor in Kenner, Wimberly was certified in January and now runs Niyama Mama, a Facebook page that shares any and all yoga classes in Kenner (regardless of who is teaching) as well as Kenner Zen Tribe—a collection of business owners offering yoga classes in Kenner. She teaches free outdoor classes at Rivertown Farmers Market, staff classes at the Hilton New Orleans Airport, children’s classes at Kid’s Gym in Esplanade Mall, fitness classes at Nolafitlife (also in Esplanade Mall), and substitute teaches at a brand-new studio in Rivertown called Yolagi Holistic Wellness. Educating herself and community has become her greatest passion.

LAGNIAPPE WITH LOVE | Lagniappe with Love was created in 2016 after the devastating floods in Louisiana. They came together as a group with an amazing amount of support to help our fellow Louisianians.

They want to continually support the people, communities, and organizations of our state as needs arise not only from flooding but also other unfortunate situations. Lagniappe with Love strives to be a strong, compassionate, locally run organization that will help to empower, embrace, support, restore, and enhance the people, communities, and organizations of Louisiana.

WOMEN’S CENTER FOR HEALING AND TRANSFORMATION | A non-profit that opened in 2013, the Women’s Center for Healing and Transformation offers a wide variety of services to women, and some men and children too, on a “pay as you’re able” basis. They do not have government funding or large grants and both co-directors are volunteers, as are most of the staff. They collaborate with psychotherapists to provide holistic mental health services, support groups, and internships in communitybased mental health with several major universities. They focus on healing and transformation not of only individuals and their families, but on society, to build a culture that respects women and girls and all people of various backgrounds for a more peaceful community.

MASTER GARDENERS OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS | MGGNO’s goal is to increase the public’s love for and knowledge of gardening and responsible stewardship of the environment. Serving Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parishes, the Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans strives to aid the LSU AgCenter to meet the educational needs of home gardeners and more in our community while providing enjoyable, worthwhile service experience for our members. MGGNO is enthusiastically celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018! •

iving without the expectation of anything in return is an incredible feeling. Along with feelings of appreciation and gratitude, we might also feel the “warm-fuzzies” and tingling sensations when bringing joy to others. With the holiday season soon approaching, there are countless opportunities and ways to give back.

Give a Donation as a Gift

Give by Promoting a Cause

Many nonprofits make it easy to “give a donation as a gift” through their company website. You can also get creative by making your own card with the donation information on it. Giving someone the gift of aiding in a cause they care about is one of the most thoughtful things you can share with them this holiday season.

You don’t have to donate money or volunteer your time to give something valuable. You can promote a cause you’re interested in through various forms both online and in person. Consider promoting charitable causes by spreading the word about the benefits of supporting nonprofits.

Even just sharing information about a cause with two to three friends provides positive exposure and increases the nonprofit’s chances of more supporters.

Give Your Time to a Cause You Love If you haven’t had experience with volunteering already, the holiday season is the perfect time to start. With the spirit of the holidays making everyone a little bit happier, you can take that energy and use it to help those who are not as fortunate as you.

Think about all those delivery drivers working extra hours to ensure your holiday gifts arrive on time or those working to make you the perfect holiday meal. Select an area of your life that you’re particularly happy about right now and trace it back to the person or group that made it possible. •

TIPS TO AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

h, the holidays are upon us. With the countless parties, dinners, and plentiful treats, the holidays are a time when people tend to pack on a little bit of weight. Even worse, weight gained during this time is typically never lost after the holiday season is over, but this doesn’t have to be the case! Follow these tips to ensure you avoid packing on any lbs. over your holiday season.

LIMIT LIQUID CALORIES Soda, alcohol, and hot cocoa are all commonly consumed beverages during the holidays.

These drinks contain high amounts of sugar, which can quickly add up to a good number of empty calories in your diet, a deadly combination for those wanting to avoid weight gain. Try to limit yourself to only a few calorie-rich beverages, and mainly stick to water and black coffee.

STAY ACTIVE Try to keep away from any sedentary activities like sitting on the couch. Inactivity is linked to weight gain, especially when it is done along with excessive eating. Something as simple as going for a walk with friends or family can be a great way to stay active and keep your weight in control.

PORTION CONTROL That whole plate of cookies looking tempting? By all means, enjoy one! Ensure you have reasonable portion sizes in order to not over-indulge in any unhealthy snacks.

One smart way to keep disciplined with this is to eat off smaller plates.

GET SUFFICIENT SLEEP Sleep often falls by the wayside as something that we can get by with on the bare minimum.

This is especially true during the holidays, which can lead to increased hunger, slow metabolism, and less energy.

BE SELECTIVE, NOT RIGID Trying to maintain a strict diet over the holidays is no fun, and you’ll quickly burn yourself out. Instead, be selective with what foods you eat, and enjoy any treats you may want in moderation. At the same time, try to cut out any unnecessary snack foods you may eat throughout your day.

GET YOUR PROTEIN! Holiday meals are typically heavy on the carbs, and lacking on essential proteins, which can lead to weight gain. To avoid this, make sure all of your meals have a source of quality protein, as it promotes fullness and can be an important tool in maintaining your weight. Try to get at least 25-30 grams of protein per meal for optimal weight management.

DON’T LET THE BUFFET TEMPT YOU Most holiday meals are served buffet style, and practically beg you to come back for seconds. Try to stay disciplined during your first trip to the buffet line, assessing your hunger and loading up your plate accordingly. Remember, you don’t need to have a plate full of food to enjoy the company of others at your gathering.

PUT THE PROCESSED FOODS DOWN Processed foods are out, whole foods are in. There are tons of super convenient holiday foods out there ready to get your weight out of control. From packaged cookies to boxed mashed potatoes, it’s better to just say no and stick to food made from scratch. This way, you avoid any unhealthy preservatives and processed carbs and fats, which can be detrimental to your weight maintenance.

BREAK OUT THE SCALE I get that we all have a love/hate relationship with the scale, but regularly weighing yourself can be an important psychological reminder while practicing weight management. Individuals that weigh themselves have been shown to be more effective at maintaining their weight, so try to make it a habit to step on the scale once or twice a week.

I eat different (healthier) foods than my family and even though I don’t want them to they always make it an issue at the holidays. What can I do?

H

i Kate! If I had a chance to coach with you one on one, my first question would be, “Say more,” because there are a lot of ways that family members might create issues around someone’s eating choices. Since I can’t do that, I’ll offer some options that I hope will be helpful to you and other readers.

Of course, there are many logistical options. Bring your own food without making a big flourish about it. Bring a dish you can eat that you can share. Eat before you arrive.

Yet, there’s more. What we eat with family is connected to ritual, bonding, memories, traditions and love. Consider how you can focus on the love and bonding separate from the food. How can you support that in your family?

Your family members may feel that not eating what they have prepared is judging them. In a small way, you are, because you believe your food is healthier than what they prepare. Anything you can do to remove your own judgement from your family members’ choices will bring you more peace.

If family members are pressing you to eat things you don’t want to or can’t eat, “No, thank you” is a complete sentence, and you don’t have to explain further. You can do this calmly with a relaxed, light energy.

If family members are making passive-aggressive statements about your eating, you don’t have to engage. You can diffuse the situation by asking them questions, or by saying, “you make a solid point” and leaving it at that, rather than feeling any need to argue about or justify your choices.

When it’s an option for everyone to feel comfortable eating what they are eating, the less of an issue your choices will be, and the focus can return to love and connection. Bon Appétit! •

This special, month-long light show in City Park hosts hundreds of thousands of colorful lights and illuminated outdoor displays to showcase the holiday season in New Orleans. An annual tradition that began in the late 1980s, Celebration in the Oaks is a family-friendly event that only happens after dark. Over the years it has become one of the most beautiful and popular holiday lighting displays in the country, attracting hundreds of thousands of people annually.

Celebration in the Oaks opens every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving and closes January 3rd.

During this glittering extravaganza, festive lights and colorful, imaginative holiday decorations are strung across City Park’s centuries-old live oak trees and elsewhere throughout the section of the park closest to the major attractions, including Storyland, the Botanical Gardens and the Carousel Gardens amusement ride area. Children and their parents are invited to take a two-mile ride on the miniature train that circles the park, passing underneath lit-up holiday displays and other special effects.
