letter from the editor FOR ALL THINGS NATURAL IN NOLA
B
y the time June rolls around we feel as though we are surrounded by the beauty of the season. The scent of May magnolias perfume the air that is now heavy with “Louisiana Dew” (aka humidity). As the summer slowly creeps closer, I am nudged by the reminder of my resolutions made so many months ago as I ushered in the New Year of possibilities. The city suddenly quiets down after the cacophony of Jazz Fest and the retreat of the students. Only those who truly love New Orleans now stay through the summer months truly making it our city for a few precious weeks before the August heat cools into the September rains that mean our season has started over once again. This month we decided to expand upon the topic of beauty to include fitness. For me these things are so intricately woven together they seem synonymous in my mind’s eye. If I am obtaining my fitness goals I feel outer beauty (thanks endorphin rush). If I have lapsed in my fitness goals this manifests itself in my mental view of my physical self.

Melissa and I have spent COUNTLESS hours discussing fitness regimen, articles we have read, classes or workouts we have tried, goals, tricks, tips and anything else that could possibly be a contributing factor to fitness of the body or mind. We spend no such time discussing traditional beauty like product recommendations for hair and skin. It seems almost comical to me reflecting on this now. However, there is some crazy logic behind it. To us, our fitness is our beauty routine. Our fitness enables us to feel beauty inside and out. I truthfully think I feel more beautiful after I have endured a hard workout, shower, and dress. The sense of accomplishment slides over my skin and I am wearing it the rest of the day. This month I invite you to read through the articles from our amazing local writers around fitness and beauty. And when all else fails remember the immortal words of a beautiful enchantress: “She warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within.” —Beauty and the Beast May your June bloom in beauty and love,

HAIR-RAISING TALK
Beauticians Empowered to Fight Domestic Abuse
A
n amendment to a law that governs the cosmetology industry in Illinois recognizes that the relationship between hairdressers and their customers may help curb domestic abuse and sexual assault. Salon workers are required to take one hour of training every two years to know the signs and provide resources to help clients. Without the training, cosmetologists, hairstylists, nail technicians and aestheticians will not be able to renew their licenses. Angela Smith, a Chicago hairstylist, has heard many whispers of mistreatment by spouses or partners, of being choked, chased or emotionally abused. “Everybody doesn’t talk, but once you build a relationship, it comes up,” she says. The law does not require salon workers to act on their suspicions, but helps them to recognize warning signs and be equipped to pass along helpful information. Available support includes hotlines, safe houses, restraining orders and access to legal professionals.

ON THE MOVE WITH APRIL DUPRÉ
BALANCING FITNESS & FUN IN THE BIG EASY by Julie Holman
I
had the pleasure to sit down with April who was in the midst of coordinating a few community events and celebrating the joyous occasion of finding a new home with her fiancé. This dynamo is responsible for bringing fun and fitness New Orleans style. April, a native New Orleanian, has always been a mover and shaker—literally—first as a dancer then her path led her to health & wellness guru then leading the way in community wellness through her company Footprints to Fitness. April’s company goal is to help others “Join the Journey” by inspiring folks to live a fun and balanced life, while staying true to New Orleans culture. Depending on your lifestyle there are plenty of offerings such as weekly Group Training Classes, signature Healthy Happy Hours, and/or custom wellness events designed so you’ll have a great

time. There’s something for everyone regardless of your fitness level. I like to also mention that Footprints is now offering CPR/AED certification. It’s so important to be prepared to help others in need. Depending on whatever you are looking for, the website is easy to navigate and you can easily log on—sign up or message me for designing an event, then SHOW UP! April shares that her style of group trainings is not just a workout—it’s an experience! “We get sweaty, frustrated, and motivated all in one session. We laugh, love, inspire each other, and dance...we love to dance! We have tons of energy while jamming to some awesome tunes.” Also, we have our signature Fitness Fusion class combining all the following: Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Cardio Strength Training, and Weight Training ALL IN ONE SESSION! “Our Corporate Wellness development is cutting edge. I find that if you take
the typical seated team building gatherings and shake it up with movement, and interaction, this creates a memorable experience that will have all stakeholders checking their calendars for the next Footprints gathering. We create scavenger hunts, Yoga and Pilates sessions, meditation, adult arts & crafts, and more. Companies set their intention and we create an experience for the group that will boost team productivity and morale.” In addition to April’s Corporate Wellness Programs, one of her most popular events tends to be the Healthy Happy Hour and Community Events. Partnering with local organizations or venues offering a post workout with music, food, beverages, and fun New Orleans-style wellness. DEAUX LOCAL
SYLVAIN in the HEART of the FRENCH QUARTER
T
by Julie Holman
he best part about living in this city is encountering the vibrant people that contribute to New Orleans’ unique flavors…literally. Recently while pursuing bite-size samples from local restaurants at a fundraiser, I tasted a delicious, clean, fragrant endive bite created with local ingredients by Executive Chef Martha Wiggins of Sylvain. Funny thing is, I pass Sylvain at least twice weekly and gaze at the menu several times telling myself that the next time I’m in the French Quarter I will pop in and try them out. Sylvain is literally steps away from Jackson Square at 625 Chartres Street and nestled in a three-story carriage house built in 1776 by the famous Architect Don Andres Almonaster y Roxas.

Old world meets modern elegance at this Americana gastropub and Chef Martha shared that she supports local purveyors buying local and using the freshest products. If you happened to stumble through the French Quarter on a hot summer day on one of your jaunts, take the time to stop in Sylvain and try the Champagne cocktail with cava and a lavender infused sugar cube—it quenches while the bubbles hypnotize. If you are sticking to light fare, you can’t go wrong with the peach and heirloom tomato salad with a chèvre and avocado vinaigrette—a perfect summer salad and to finish a watermelon gazpacho—wonderfully refreshing. Sylvain is an oasis of style and unmatched quality in the French Quarter. SYLVAIN IMAGES BY RUSH JAGOE

SKIN
DEEP
BEAUTY PRODUCT AND LIFESTYLE HABITS THAT GO BEYOND THE SURFACE by Dash Rivers
Our skin is a protective living intelligent sensory system that mirrors us from the inside out. Many factors such as genetics, environment, and stress determine the appearance of skin. Product alone may not be the deciding factor of “beautiful skin.” It’s a balance of nourishing the skin with a healthy diet, exercise, hydration, sleep, and a product regimen that is right for your lifestyle.
14
New Orleans
nalamag.com
FACT: Skin is our body’s largest organ and makes up about 16% of our body weight. The skin operates as one of the four main elimination channels—think sweat! Our skin has receptors that help us respond to pressure, gauge pain, and temperature. Skin gets its color from pigment called melanin and depending on how much melanin the body makes determines our unique shade. Our skin sheds dead cells daily and a new layer is generated every 28 days. Harmless bacteria thrive on our skin and can help immune cells fight vectors or diseasecausing microbes.
WAYS TO LOVE YOUR BIRTHDAY SUIT: NOURISH FROM THE INSIDE OUT—Avoid processed foods & sugars. Eat plenty of vibrant and colorful live plants loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
NATURE—Get outside and walk, play, move, swim, hike, and feel the earth kiss your face & body (with sunscreen). SLEEP—Studies show at least 6 hours of sleep rejuvenate the skin. SWEAT—Exercise, move, dance, add Yoga, Pilates, Barre, cross-training or power-walking.
FLEX—Facial aerobics, acupuncture, and massage help release toxins.
Our skin is a visual messenger and can reveal a lot about our health, signal infection, allergic reactions, and certain types of cancer.
HYDRATE—Your body is 80% water—
Men’s skin is 25% thicker than women and regardless of age have a higher collagen density.
TOPICAL—Application of cruelty free lotion, creams, oils, and facial treatments which aid in moisturizing—use both morning and night. Be mindful of what you put on your body—pause a moment and think if you would ingest what you put on your skin—know your ingredients, research before you apply.
Women’s skin shifts after menopause due to hormones and collagen density. Nourishing your skin inside and out is vital to the homeostasis within our bodies. The growing field of psychodermatology is all about the mind-skin connection—between our emotional state, the body’s physiological response to our emotional state, and the outcome of this response on our skin, body, health and well-being. Science has shared that certain hormones such as glucocorticoid can negatively impact your skin, causing disorders and irritated skin. Research links chronic bursts of cortisol to increased blood sugar, which is also known to damage collagen and elastin, which keeps the skin smooth and supple. Shifting focus to a regimen that fits your lifestyle may be the perfect way you can combat skin fatigue.
cells need water and other healthy tonics and beverages.
WASH YOURSELF CLEAN—smarter & not harder—Whether you are home, at a spa, or camping under the stars, start your day with simple hand to face/body friction, periodic exfoliation, and a splash of cool water. Rinse and repeat first thing in the morning and before you go to bed. Think gentle versus aggressive or abrasive as harsh friction can cause inflammation.
BREATHE—Oxygen. Prana. Take 10 mins a day—try splitting it up 5 mins in the morning and 5 minutes before you fall asleep to just breathe in and out. This pause is also meditative and inspires creativity while relaxing the face, body, and mind.
ADAPTOGENS—A unique group of herbal ingredients used to improve the health of your adrenal system; the system responsible for managing your body’s hormonal response to stress. Adaptogens are not new. They are centuriesold herbs such as Ginseng, Euthero, Rhodiola Rosea, Ashwagandha, sometimes known as Indian Ginseng, one of the most commonly used adaptogen herbs in Ayurvedic healing as well as Astragalus, Shizandra Berry, and Licorice Root. They work together in various combinations to help your body adapt to its environment. For example, in a stressful situation, adaptogenic herbs maintain and help to restore balance by normalizing your physiological response to prevent your body & mind from jumping into overdrive leading to increased or chronic exhaustion when encountering stressors. They work to protect your skin and body from tension, stress, and the influx of damaging hormones such as cortisol that is released into the body. Dermatologists, Naturopathic Physicians, and wellness practitioners encourage the use of products with Adaptogens in both topical or oral use. Even juice bars are adding mini tonics or juice shots that include Ginger and Holy Basil. Prior to any skincare shift or change, you may experience some mild breakout. If you think that you may have a serious skin condition or infection, please speak with your healthcare practitioner prior to embarking on a new skincare routine.

FITNESS AS MEDICINE
Rx: TAKE TWO LAPS AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING. by Dodge Prescott MS. SMITH: I don’t feel right, I am bloated and can’t sleep. DOCTOR FEELGOOD: Are you taking part in any physical activity, movement, or exercise program? MS. SMITH: Sure, I walk the dog and take my spouse to Rock ‘n’ Bowl for Zydeco on Wednesday. DOCTOR FEELGOOD: Although it’s great you do these activities, I feel the need to put you on a PA regimen 3 days a week. See you in 30 days.
The old-fashioned mindset of polypharmacy is on its way out and a script for exercise is in!

Complementary medicine practice considers the holistic approach and nowadays even your primary care physician may write a prescription that complements traditional therapy or recommend a PA (Physical Activity) program versus solely prescribing pills. MOVEMENT=LONGEVITY SITTING=EQUATES TO SMOKING Clinical studies demonstrate that physical inactivity is the major public health problem of our time. Sedentary lifestyle habits such as sitting for extended periods of time, couch surfing, and lack of immobility may lead to chronic disease. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shares that people who are physically active tend to live longer and are at lower risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, depression and some cancers. Evidence demonstrates that exercise/movement/activity is a powerful, easy, and a cost effective way to treat and prevent chronic disease, to mitigate the harmful effects of obesity, and lower mortality rates.
PLUS—exercise has a positive effect on functional capacity and quality of life. Since 2007 the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative, a partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), has aimed to advance the implementation of evidence-based strategies to elevate the status of PA in healthcare, bringing about positive changes and implementation of prescribing exercise has improved outcomes in data released in 2014. The results indicate that having a regular fitness regimen is the new medicine and today physicians and wellness clinicians have a responsibility to assess physical activity habits in their patients and clients and inform them of the risk of being inactive, and offer resources and an exercise regimen.
The reality is that our bodies are designed to move, and ensuring that we participate in a structured movement regimen be it swimming, walking, weight training, Yoga, or dancing every day keeps our body, mind, and heart beating—thus helping our mood, cognition, and ability to focus and concentrate while improving our overall quality of life. DR. FEELGOOD’S Rx: MAKE EXERCISE A PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE AT LEAST 3 DAYS A WEEK. WORK: Become a movement advocate in your workplace. Reach out to your Human Resource department and ask for an ergonomic assessment and inquire about Corporate Wellness programs or incentives such as discounts on joining a gym or weekend warrior programs, and standing work-stations. Take a walk on your lunch break, take 10 and do Chair Yoga, stretch, and modify your routine so you are taking the stairs instead of the elevator. HOME: Create a ritual of stretch, core, or other fitness/exercise sequences of Yoga, Pilates, Dance, or combo. Use your computer, phone, or TV as a tool that works to complement your lifestyle, agility, flexibility, and personal space. NATURE: Rowing a Kayak or canoe, skating, swimming, running, biking or hiking, surfing or walking—there are even cross-training stations in the parks. Just get outdoors and make it a routine. ACCOUNTABILITY: Healthcare and wellness professionals who perform Physical Activity Assessments and prescribe either traditional medicine or Exercise as Medicine trust that you will follow the regimen recommended for optimal results. It’s up to you to take the steps and stick to healthy lifestyle changes. Sometimes signing up with a trainer or taking a 30-day challenge is all you need to get moving.

OUTDOOR RUNNING There is nothing like hitting the road with just you and your sneakers for some of us. Here are some of my favorite Running Routes in and around NOLA:
1 | DOWN THE TRACKS.
Let’s face it, there is just nothing like running down the streetcar tracks on Carrollton Ave. and St. Charles Ave. in New Orleans. The energy of the passing cars, the sound of the streetcars, and those houses! I’ve lived here my entire life and I never get tired of looking at those amazing houses. It is also one the best uninterrupted, straight runs in the city where you can easily do 10 miles there and back if you like.
20
New Orleans
nalamag.com
4
2 | THE LOOP IN AUDUBON.
4 | LAFITTE GREENWAY.
3 | WOODLANDS TRAIL.
5 | TAMMANY TRACE.
My personal favorite is running in Audubon. I like to go at off times and run the dirt path when it is just myself and the oaks. It is my church, my sanctuary, where I go to get away for just a moment. If you run the bike path around the park, it’s 1.7 miles, the dirt path just beyond it around the park is 2.3, and if you add in the Fly to your loop, you’ll get your 5K in at 3.1.
In Belle Chasse, there are 13 miles of trails looping through the park. This is doggy heaven for my black lab, but keep your pups out of the water as there are gators in there! And don’t forget your bug spray either. Last time I took my family out there, there were armadillos everywhere. Welcome to trail running, Louisiana style, y’all. When the GPS ends, park at the animal shelter and walk along the canal towards the water tower and the entrance to the park is just around a ¼ of a mile up.
If you haven’t checked out Lafitte Greenway yet, you should! One of our newest parks in the city (they call it a linear park). It spans 2.6 miles to link neighborhoods from Treme to Mid-City, from Armstrong Park to City Park. Friends of Lafitte Greenway are always putting on great events too from runs to free yoga and Zumba classes.
Originally a corridor of the Illinois railroad, you don’t have to live on the Northshore to go check out this gem. There are 31 miles to run through serene pine forest and past beautiful wetlands; it is a great place to go to get out of the city. There are trailheads in Mandeville, Covington, Abita Springs, Lacombe, and Slidell where there are often farmers’ markets, live music, and restaurants nearby to fuel your run (or grab a beer after). Make a day of it!
5 * | SOME RUNNERS UP (HA!):
Running through the Quarter dodging tourists, the levee at the lake, the levee along the river from Uptown to Jefferson parish, or the loop in City Park (around the lake or just across the way at the new 2-mile running/biking path). Wherever you go, just put on your headphones, lace up your sneakers, and just be free for a moment. What are some of your favorite places to run in the city? Have an idea for a Take 5? Let me hear from you! publisher@nalamag.com –Melissa LAFITTE GREENWAY PHOTO: By Bart Everson (https://www.ickr.com/photos/ editor/26935768005/) [CC BY 2.0 (http:// creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

SWEGS KITCHEN HEALTH CORNER by Amy Davis NUTRITION—BOOSTING MEAL ADDITIVES Usually, when we think food additives, it has a negative connotation.
Amy Davis, RD, LDN , SWEGS Kitchen Lead Dietitian Amy works to bridge the gap between food and wellness. Her areas of expertise include recipe and menu development, nutrition analysis, nutritious food preparation, nutrition counseling for weight loss, food allergies, and improving one’s relationship with food.
These are typically ingredients used to prolong shelf lives of food products and/or improve the texture. But we can also add small amounts of ingredients to our food to vastly improve the nutrition. These are easy additions that mostly don’t even change the flavor of your meals!
Do you honor the many paths to God?
SPINACH: One of the most nutrient-dense vegetables, Popeye’s favorite tops the list! Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including Magnesium, Iron, B Vitamins, and Potassium. Spinach provides anti-inflammatory support, is an excellent source of antioxidant nutrients, promotes vision health, and supports bone health. Throw a big handful of spinach into smoothies, soups, stirfrys, and egg scrambles for a nutritional boost. FLAXSEEDS: Just 1 tablespoon per day of flaxseeds has been associated with lowered risk of breast and prostate cancer because of phytochemicals called lignans. These little seeds also work wonders for lowering high blood pressure from their high omega-3 fatty acid content. But make sure to buy ground or grind your own flaxseeds, since those beneficial nutrients cannot be absorbed in whole flaxseeds. Add flaxseeds to smoothies, yogurt, baked goods, thick sauces, or on top of salads. CHIA SEEDS: These fascinating little seeds provide a huge amount of nutrition. Just 2 tablespoons give you 11g of fiber, 4g of protein, and about 30% of your daily needs for Manganese,

Magnesium, and Phosphorus. They also absorb up to 10 times their weight in liquid, and can turn into the consistency of tapioca pudding! If you’re not a fan of pudding, you can add these to baked good, salads, smoothies, oatmeal, or juices. These are just three examples of some ingredients you can use to bump up the nutrient density of your meals and snacks. Some other great ideas are matcha green tea powder, turmeric, fresh herbs, coconut flakes, or goji berries. Now those are some additives that will improve any nutrition label! Â

ASK THE LIFE COACH
with Carla Robertson
It’s often easy to appreciate the beauty in others (people, animals, nature, etc.) but not so easy to appreciate the beauty in ourselves. Do you have any suggestions for how we can appreciate our own beauty? —Siobhan
I
believe the challenge stems from different criteria we have for beauty in ourselves and beauty in others. This is a great place to begin—we can notice where we are easily able to find the beauty in a trait or characteristic when we see it in the world around us, while remaining blind to our own beauty because the way we define it for ourselves is so much harsher. Our environment doesn’t always help with this—we are surrounded by a fascinating mix of unattainable beauty standards interspersed with occasional lip-service to the tenet that “everyone is beautiful.” We are so used to the advertising that encourages us to see ourselves as flawed and not quite enough that we believe it doesn’t affect us. Yet it so clearly does. When you’re critical of yourself, try asking, “Would I say that to my best friend or someone I really care about?
If not, why am I saying it to myself?” Self-directed meanness is not as motivational as our mind would like to think it is. Like anything else, appreciating our own beauty takes practice. It requires genuine paying attention and gently breaking the habit of negative self-talk, both when we are alone and when we’re in front of others. Take some time right now to define beauty. What is beautiful? How many ways can you describe beauty? What falls under t h e u m b re l l a o f beauty? Try listing twenty things that you find beautiful about yourself. Revel in the process. When you broaden your beauty definition for yourself as you do for others, think of all the energy you can free up to do your work in the world, unburdened by worry about superficial appearance! Now, that is truly beautiful.
When you’re critical of yourself, try asking, “Would I say that to my best friend or someone I really care about? If not, why am I saying it to myself?”

VIRTUAL FLOW CHRISTINA ANDRINI A LOCAL YOGI ON THE GEAUX Christina Andrini is a certified 200hr E-RYT, YACEP, global yoga instructor, Seva missionary yogi, and founder of Jai Bhakti Yoga. She also serves as the Regional Coordinator for Connected Warriors Yoga and Wayfarer for Wanderlust festivals. Christina shares that Jai Bhakti Yoga—Literally means ”Victorious Devotion to the Divine”—this can be God, the Higher Self, Highest Truth, but… most importantly, it’s the devotion to the Supreme. Variety is the spice of life and it’s so nice to have diverse Yoga offerings in our community. You can catch Christina about town leading classes at a variety of studios as well as in Nature under the Wind Chimes in City Park. Her passion for teaching is inspired by her desire to serve humanity, build community, and empower students to come face to face to their truest self by experiencing an expressive, creative, and spiritual practice, which challenges the mind, body, breath connection in a pranic meditation through her Bhakti and Hatha Yoga traditions. Christina will be leading a retreat to Bali in September which involves missionary and community mentorship. For more info on Jai Bhakti Yoga check out www.jaibhaktiyoga.com
