one-year anniversary of owning and distributing Natural Awakenings Magazine in New Orleans. It has been an amazing year. We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve the greater New Orleans area every month. As always, milestones are a time of reflection and contemplation. There was so much to learn in the past year. This venture has truly humbled both of us and forced us to grow as women, entrepreneurs, Coco Kunstman & Melissa Burbank friends, partners, managers, mothers, and significant others. It is amazing the fluidity with which your growth and knowledge in one area can be applied to the other facets in your life. I think we have learned as much about ourselves as we have about the publishing business! As we looked back over our year as publishers we saw some amazing opportunities for growth. Our reflections lead Melissa and I to cast a very scrutinous eye on the content, layout, and overall feel of the magazine. We are always striving to look at best practices to help get information to our readers. As we are always reminded without you, our loyal readers, there would be no NALAmag. It was with this tweaking eye that Melissa and I are very proud to have our September issue premiere our new look and feel. You may notice a few improvements to the magazine. The paper is still sustainably sourced, made from recycled materials, and printed with soy ink. However you should notice a thicker feel for an easier reading experience accompanied by vivid color. We have completely redesigned the content of the magazine to improve the reading experience and the presentation of the information. To aid in the mobility of our magazine we have partnered with Issuu, Inc.. This app allows you to read NALAmag anywhere on all of your devices. We hope that this is another way we can educate the community from anywhere at any time. Melissa and I are so honored that we are able to provide this monthly guide of natural health and wellness to this city that we love. We would love to hear feedback from you, our readers, on the updates we have made this month. Please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, email, or give us a call. We love to talk and are anxious to hear what you have to say. As we head into September and kick off National Yoga Month we hope that you will find the contents of these pages helpful and fun. Our goal is always to find that balance of work and play that sends us smiling to moon and grinning at the sunrise. Although that may not be everyday for you (we are human after all) we hope that we can help in any small way to make your day a little brighter or at least more interesting. As we welcome in the fall months bringing with it cooler winds and longer nights we hope NALAmag will bring some warmth to your life. From our heart to yours,

New Orleans’ Hidden Buddhist Temple
localbriefs
New Orleans is home to one of the great Buddhist teaching centers in the South. Thay (teacher in Vietnamense) Thich Thien Tri is leading the New Orleans Community in the ways of spirituality and Buddhism. Starting in September Thay will teach a basic mediation therapy for all beginners is 3-months course. In the basic mediation class, the beginner will learn different mediation styles such as sitting, standing, walking, and total relaxation. Mediation helps to reduce physical and emotion stresses, and it also strengthens the brain’s ability to focus and think calmly under pressure. Community members can also look to join Thay on September 10th for a half-day retreat at the Temple in New Orleans complete with a home cooked Vietnamese lunch. Thay has already helped so many members of the community from spiritual aliments to whole body wellness. To start learning what can impact you look for Thay’s book on the basics of mediation available for sale at the temple or the Tibetan House. Yogi Stories
One Women’s Story of Pain, Loss, and Healing
I
In September 2006 Amy Pickholtz
was blissfully happy, having married the love of her life Jim. They had almost seamlessly blended their families, survived Katrina, and welcomed a beautiful new son. In September 2007 Pickholtz began teaching Kundalini yoga in Baton Rouge at Lotus Yoga. When the couple originally met Pickholtz was living in New Orleans as a single parent of her daughter, a foster parent to children of the State, a full time student, a freelance technical theatre professional and part time Kundalini yoga teacher. “Jim came to my Saturday morning yoga class from Baton Rouge with his mat tied on his motorcycle. When we first met
6

he questioned why I had to go to yoga class on Wednesday nights before going to bike night with him until he began his practice and learned the power of Kundalini yoga.” On October 14, 2007 Jim had no qualms getting out of bed at 5:15 a.m. to drive Pickholtz down to Bourg, LA. for a water blessing with the yogis. “I said to him, ‘You must really love me to get up on a cold Sunday morning to ride me down to Houma for a Water Blessing with the Yogis.’ He replied, ‘Yes, I do.’.” That was one of the last times Pickholtz would hear Jim say those powerful words to her. Later that day as the couple was riding
together, melting into each other on the bike with the Louisiana sun warming their skin a Pontiac Bonneville pulled out of the Ascension Civic Center driveway and into the path of the Pickholtz’s motor cycle. Amy’s husband was killed and she suffered disabling injuries. The car driver, thenSorrento Mayor Brenda Melancon was initially charged with negligent homicide, negligent injuring and failure to yield from a private drive. But an Ascension Parish Grand Jury in 2009 failed to indict the mayor because under state law prosecutors had to show that gross negligence was involved. The Grand Jury felt it wasn’t. Devastated, Pickholtz decided the law had to change. With the help of motorcycle-friendly state Rep. M. J. “Mert” Smiley (R-Port Vincent), she set out to increase penalties for right-of-way violations, and succeeded. “My world ceased to exist, but the rest of the world kept going.” Said Pickholtz. Phi Truong, founder of Lotus Yoga, learned of the crash the day after it happened and emailed to Meredith Wright, founder of the Kundalini Yoga Center in Houma, LA., who was one of the Yogis at the Water Blessing. They began the emails to the Yoga Communities. Meredith emailed Dev Suroop Kaur and she sent Global notices to the 3HO Community. “Their optimism and constant support permeated my bleak existence,” remarked Pickholtz. Phi set up a donation account and hosted benefits, including the one Sat Kartar Kaur came to Baton Rouge for in December 2007. Pickholtz attended in her wheelchair, still with exterior metal fixtures pro-
truding from her pelvis as a vice to hold her together. During the concert Pickholtz moved her arms, and chanted, feeling life’s vibration for the first time since the crash. “I adopted the healing mantra of Guru Ram Das as my own personal mantra after being placed in the middle of a healing circle at the close of the benefit and feeling the healing energy pouring into me. Sure, I knew Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung for years before, but never had it impacted me this way. Never had I needed it as I did then. It was the first defining moment that vaulted me back to having a desire to live and recover,” recalls Pickholtz. Pickholtz attended her first yoga class post-crash in February of 2008. “Bent over, hobbling with a cane (after giving up the walker that day) and in severe chronic pain (having gone cold turkey in two and a half days off the elaborate concoction of medicines I had been ingesting for four months) I got through the class and was subjected to a breakthrough of uniting my body, my spirit and my mind with Jim in the Universe.” For the duration of the first four surgeries, physical and occupational therapy lasting almost two years, and grief therapy for two and a half years, Pickholtz chanted Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung for days, weeks, months at a time. Each time there was a noticeable difference that offered relief. At some point in that first year the mantra manifested an entirely distinctive affect, offering Pickholtz the most intense encounters of her life. “I call them my profound experiences, wherein I could feel Jim’s energy wrapping around my
arms, literally leading them ever so slowly from the original mudra associated with the mantra to a place of embracing him just as I did when we were riding. Pickholtz also attributes her ability to go on without anti-depressants and with minimal pain medication to Kundalini yoga and meditation. She maintains that it is her saving Grace. “I hail Guru Ram Das who heals my world,” remarks Pickholtz. Pickholtz now walks, runs, and teaches yoga without any noticeable impediment. “My many doctors throughout have acknowledged that without Kundalini yoga and meditation, I would not have recovered as well as I have.” Pickholtz’s experience is an amazing representation of the power of not only human perseverance but also of the incredible power of love and Kundalini yoga. Since moving back to New Orleans in November 2014, Pickholtz opened a studio in February 2015 and began teaching at Downtown Fitness in Canal Place August 2015. She continues to study with senior teachers when she travels to Los Angeles and when guest teachers come to Nola. “I love being a student. I continue to practice my sadhana (daily spiritual practice) and pass on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan with the message of healing. I really believe I am truly in the Golden Chain of Teachers, repeating my oath as a kundalini yoga teacher to myself each time I have the privilege of instructing, with the addition of, ‘and by the Grace of God, I am, I am here.’”

globalbriefs Zika Vaccine Ready For Human Trial
Scientist from Harvard University and the University of Sao Paulo con-
firmed that three Zika Vaccines have been successfully tested and are ready for human trials. All three vaccines have been found to grant full immunity against the virus in monkeys. Over 1,700 cases of microcepcephaly have been linked to the Zika virus. The result of infection is a birth defect that leaves newborns with shrunken heads. At least 15 cases have been confirmed in Florida last month. These clinical trials are the first encouraging step towards a cure. This is the first step in eradicating the virus globally. Relax and Unwind Restorative Yoga Poses Foster Healing by Meredith Montgomery
I
n classical yoga, teachers often sequence instruction toward reaching a pinnacle pose such as an inversion or arm balance. In restorative yoga, the peak pose is savasana—in which the practitioner fully relaxes while resting flat on their back. Leeann Carey, author of Restorative Yoga Therapy: The Yapana Way to Self-Care and Well-Being, explains, “This passive asana practice turns down the branch of the nervous system that keeps us in fightor-flight mode and turns up the system allowing us to rest and digest. It feels like a massage for the nervous system and encourages self-inquiry, reflection and change, rather than perfection.” The physical, mental and spiritual benefits are similar to those of active yoga, but because poses are held longer and supported by props such as bolsters, blankets, belts and blocks, “There’s no stress on the tissue and joints. Each pose gifts us with longerlasting benefits, including more time for the mind to unwind,” advises Carey. “Restorative yoga allows both muscles and the brain to recover from
14

NALAmag.com
fatigue, so we are stronger, sharper and better able to act in the world afterward,” explains Roger Cole, Ph.D., a certified Iyengar yoga teacher in Del Mar, California, and a research scientist studying the physiology of relaxation, sleep and biological rhythms. He attests that it also serves as preparation for pranayama (mindful yoga breathing) and meditation, which require a clear, well-rested, focused mind. Perfect for beginners and used by longtime practitioners to complement other yoga styles, restorative poses are designed to accurately realign and reshape the body. They also can be therapeutically tailored to support natural healing for issues related to tension, premenstrual syndrome, weak immune functioning, back pain, pregnancy and recovery for athletes. “Poses for healing may require targeted gentle stretching,
but prop use will coax the body into desired positions without requiring muscular effort,” says Cole. An early student of B.K.S. Iyengar and familiar with props, San Francisco resident and co-founder of Yoga Journal magazine Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., found herself leading her first class comprised entirely of supported poses during a power blackout at a 1980 workshop. “I didn’t want people walking around in the dark, so I improvised a restorative class and everyone loved it,” she recalls. She revisited the idea several years later when she personally felt the need for physical, emotional and spiritual restoration. For a year, 90 percent of her practice was supported poses, and the
switch helped her so much that it inspired her first book, Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times. She’s since written more books and trained teachers in restorative yoga around the world. As in classical yoga, a restorative sequence should be balanced with asanas (positions) from all pose classifications— backbends, twists, inversions and forward bends. It takes time for the body to comfortably settle deeply into a pose—as long as 15 minutes—therefore, a 90-minute restorative class may include only a handful of asanas. Lasater says, “Most people don’t need more of anything from the culture in which we live. They need much more to learn to be still and at ease.” In today’s yoga world, which seems to emphasize power and action, “Restorative yoga has become imperative to balance activity and ambition with stillness and being,” she continues. Lasater notes that while many classes are reducing savasana to as little as three minutes, students need 20 minutes. Carey clarifies that because this approach focuses on opening and letting
go, rather than striving for the biggest stretch, “Sensation-seeking yogis may need to shift their perspective. The biggest challenge is often quieting the mind while the body is still. When a student is uncomfortable because the mind is screaming, it helps to compare it to having tight hamstrings in an active class. We’re not chasing relaxation; just breathe, feel and watch,” she says. “Eventually, everything will let go.” “The more our mind rebels against relaxing, the more we need it,” observes Lasater. Students often turn to yoga as a strategy for feeling whole, and she suggests that one of the best ways to find clarity within is to listen in stillness, one savasana at a time. “It’s a gift to ourself, our family and the world,” she adds. “When we feel rested, we’re more compassionate and ready to serve the greater good.” Meredith Montgomery, a registered yoga teacher, publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com). natural awakenings
